Sir,-Iwouldliketobringto yourattentionthearticlespublishedin"TheRecord,"under theheading,"Discriminations," regardingthecriticismofthe W.A.Symphonyorchestra,of bothlastseasonandthisseason.

Iwouldliketodrawyourattentiontoaconcertheldlast year,withRaymondLambertas soloartistandEugeneGoossens conductor.Inyourcolumnnot amentionwasmadeofthegross discrepancyofthepianist,who playedashethoughtandnotas SaintSaenswroteit-alsonota mentionofhowhewalkedoff thestagesome20barsbefore theendofthelastmovement. Therehavebeenmanyotherincidentsduringtheseveralrecentconcertsthatwouldprove very,interestingwritingasfar asmusicisconcerned.

Turningtothisyear,Ihad thefortuneofsittingbehindthe personwhoIbelievewrites yourcolumn.Thiswasduring theSummerseries.Notonany occasiondidIseeyourwriter followtheorchestrathrougha score. Imyselfalwaysread thescorethroughwiththeorchestra,andhavefoundon manyoccasionsinterestingmaterialworthmentioninginacolumnofthissort.Perhapsyour writerisunawareofsuchactions,orifheisnot,heisnot inapositiontocommithimself.This,inmyopinion,is nottrue,constructivecriticism.

Inacoupleofyourcolumns yourwriterdoesgivemention tothefactoftheoboefirstplayingoutoftuneintheWest AustralianSymphonyorchestra.

Doesyourwriterknowthe wholeorchestratunesupfrom theAgivenbytheoboe?Iask yourwriternexttimetolisten verycarefullytotheAgivenby theoboetotheleaderofthe orchestra, thenlistenonceagain totheAgiventothestrings fromtheleader.Theleader's Aishigherinintonationthan

thewoodwinds.Yourwriter's theoryoftheoboeisincorrect. ImyselfplayedoboeinorchestrasofEngland,butowing toanaccidenttomyfingersam nowunabletoplayanylonger.

AlsoonmanyoccasionsIhave writtenarticlesforthe"Canon," Australianjournalofmusic, alsofortheEnglish"Gramaphone."

ThepointImakehereisthat, beingaoboeist,Ifindthacriticismregardingtheoboeplayer mostunfair.Iknownotthe youngladywhoplaysfirstoboe intheorchestra,buthaveheard herplayintheMelbourne,AdelaideandHobartorchestras,as wellasPerth.Herstandard ofplayingisveryhighandintonationgood.

Regardingintonation,perhaps ifyourwriterweretolisten tootherplayersandtheirintonationhewouldhavemuch towriteabout.Imyselffound twoplayerswhoplayratherout oftune,especiallythesecond flute,whodoublesonpiccolo; theothersecondbassoon.

Ialwayslisten-inoverthe radioandattendallconcerts. andhavefollowedtheorchestra forquiteaconsiderabletime now,andamveryinterestedin anythingconcernedwiththeorchestra.Ifindthecriticismis yourcolumnsmostunfairand thewriterdoesnotwritecandid truecriticism.-Yours,etc., REGC.MYERS. 191CanningHighway, SouthPerth.
