societyhelditsannualrallyat LakeGraceonApril15.LakeGraceisthemostcentralpointofthehuge parishministeredtobytheRev.J.O'Mahony.Members,someofwhom travelledover80milestoreceiveHolyCommunionatthe9o'clockMass, camefromWagin,Dumbleyung,Kukerin,LakeGrace,Pingaring,Newdegate,LakeComm,LakeBiddy,andWedgecarrup. wouldalsodiethespiritual deathofspiritualthirst. Herecommendedtomembers theHailMary"sandwich,"the breadbeingtheHailMaryon awakingeachmorning,andon retiring,andthemeatbeingthe dailyofferingtoGodofallour thoughtswordsanddeeds.He instancedthespecialformsof prayersandejaculationswhich weresoeasytouse,andconcludedwithaspecialappealfor thefamilyRosary.

Followingbreakfast,thebusinesspartoftherallycommencedandwasopenedbythe prayersofthesocietyreadby FatherO'Mahony.Themeeting waspresidedoverbyMr.E. Luscombe.Fivespeakers,all membersofthebranch,addressedthemeetingonsubjectsof vitalinteresttoallCatholics,in connectionwiththeregularpracticeoftheirFaith.

Mr.W.Bryan,oftheNewdegatesub-branchofWagin, wasthefirstspeaker.HissubjectwastheMasswhichisthe greatesteventinthelifeofa Catholic.OurLordcelebratedthe firstMassonthenightbefore Hedied.Hegavepowertohis prieststocelebrateMasssothat HemightbewithmeninHoly Communionandonthealtars ineverycorneroftheearth.

Mr.S.R.Dwyer,secretaryof theWaginbranch,wasthenext speaker,andhissubjectwas theSacraments.Hesaidthe wordSacramentmeantsomethingsacredandholyandthe wordwasmostapplicableto thesevenchannelsofGrace fromOurLordontheCross.In asacramentsomethingwasdone toamanoutwardlysothathe mightknowthattherewasan inwardflowofgraceprovided hewasinafitstatetoreceive it.HeoutlinedthegracesreceivedfromthesevenSacraments,andremindedallpresent ofvalueoffrequentConfession andCommunion.Asamanrequiresfoodfrequentlytokeep uphisstrengthofbody,sotoo, herequiresthespiritualfoodof theBlessedEucharisttokeep uphisstrenghinGrace.

Mr.E.Luscombe,presidentof theWaginbranch,followed withatalkonprayer.Hedescribedprayerasspeakingto andthinkingaboutGod.He instancedthefoolishplightof themanwhoafterwandering throughthedesertcameupon anoasis,withabountifulsupply ofdrinkingwater,andrefused todrink,andthusdiedofthirst; sothemanwhowouldnotpray

Mr.P.TrevenenofthesubbranchofLakeGracethen spokeontheRosary.HereferredtotheRosaryasoneofthe keystoourFaith,particularly thefamilyRosary.Hesaidit wasclosetotheHolySacrifice oftheMass,becauseintherecitationoftheRosarytheLife, Death,andResurrectionofOur Lordwererelived.Amanmight obtainmuchworldlywealthand ondeathleaveitalltohisfamily,butbyadherencetothe

ASECTIONOFTHELARGEgatheringofmen, withtheRev.J.O'Mahony,theirparishpriest,who metatLakeGraceforaHolyNameRally. familyRosaryhecouldleave alsothegiftofFaith.

Mr.P.McGlinn,ofthesubbranchofPingaring,thenspoke ontheHolyNamepledge.He saidthatonbecomingaHoly Namemanitwasneccessaryto liveuptothepledge.Dailylife waslargelygovernedbyhabit androutine.Hesuggestedthat acloseexaminationofthe pledgemightforceuponthem thenecessityofchangingsome oftheirhabits.

Attheconclusionofthese talksFatherO'Mahonythenreceived45menasfullmembers oftheWaginbranchoftheHoly Namesociety.Heemphasised thefactthatthemenhadall joinedtheSocietyoftheirown freewill,andthattheywere

undernoobligationtojoin.The membersbelongedtothesubbranchesofDumbleyung,Hukerin,LakeGrace,andPingaring,whereguildsoftheWeskit branchhadexistedforsome time.

TheDiocesanUnionwasrepresentedatthisfunctionby Messrs.E.O'Mahony,F.Morgan,andM.Foley.Theywere welcomedbyFatherO'Mahony, andeachresponded.Theyexpressedtheirgratitudetoall concernedforthesuccessofthe functionandexpressedgratitudetoFatherO'Mahonyfor hisoutstandingworkforthe SocietyintheWaginparish. Specialthankswereaccordedto theladiesfortheirshareinthe successofthefunction.

St.Columban'sForeignMissionsocietywasfoundedin1918 byBishopGalvin,whohas spent40yearsinChina.Todayitsranksnumbered600 priests.TheAustralianheadquartersoftheSocietywereat Essendon,Victoria,wherethere wasalsoaseminary.

TwoWestAustralianpriests oftheSocietywerenowengagedintheforeignMissions, theRev.F.Chapmanandthe Rev.K.O'Mahony,

OnEasterSunday,100membersoftheIrishclubpicnicked atPointWalter.Thepicnic hadoneveryunusualfeaturethepublicrecitationofatheRosary.Thedecadesweregiven outbyMartinCavanagh,alternatively.inGaelicandEnglish, andofferedforthesoulsof1916 leaders.

Boththem,shallbelikenedtoa wisemanthatbuilthishouse uponarock.Andtherainfell, andthefloodscame,andthe windsblew:andtheybeatupon thathouse.Anditfellnot,for itwasfoundedonarock."(Matt.vii.24-25).Notalone wastheChurchfoundedona rock,butAlmightyGodhad fromtimetotimeraisedup greatmentodefendandprotecther,saidFatherHealy.

FrederickOzanamwasone suchman,andagreatCatholic layman,whousedhisextensive knowledgeoftheChurch's teachingtodefendherinthe hallsoflearning,andwho,by hispracticeofChristiancharity, quickenedtoanewlifethe faithofthepoor.Hewasa modelforallCatholicmen, andmoreespeciallyforall membersofSt.VincentdePaul society,hisgreatestandmost lastingwork.

BenedictionoftheBlessed Sacramentfollowed,andwas givenbytheV.Rev.J.P.WilkinsonoftheVincentianOrder.

ThemeetingwasheldinSt. Thomas'schoolroom,inReserve street,inthepresenceofFather Wilkinson,spiritualdirectorof thesociety,wholatergavean addresstotheBrothers.

Amatterthatwasfreelydiscussedwas"CamillusHouse", anightshelterformenand youths.Itwastheintentionof thesocietytoerectabuilding for.thatpurposeassoonassufficientfundswereavailable, andallwhohavethesociety's welfareatheartareaskedto assistinthatgreatworkof charity.

TheSeaman'sInstituteat Fremantlewasanothergreat worktheSocietyhasundertakev,andithasprovedtobe ahavenofresttovisiting seamen.

S.I.C.teamwasfacedwith makingatotalof171against thestrongMogumberbowling team.Thecaptain,ClemHill, madeamagnificent63,and RichardPugh27,buttheteam totalled151,andsolostthe matchandtheshieldby20runs. Mogumberthuswontheshield, whichhadbeenwonandretainedbythecollegesincethecompetitionwasrecommencedafter thewar.

AmemberofthedelaSalle congregation,BrotherJustinian completedacourseinscience attheSydneyUniversity. InterviewedinPerth,Brother saidthatinMalayaallschools, whetherprivateordenominational,receiveGovernmental financialassistanceproviding theyconformtotheregulations oftheState.

CitingtheexampleofSt. John'sInstitutionatKuala Lumpur,Malaya,whichhe teaches,BrotherJustinianstatedthatithadanenrolmentof 1,400pupilsandateaching staffof10Brotherseachof whomreceivedasalaryof£16 perweekOtherstaffcomprised 32layteachers,sevendomesticsandtwoclerks-allpaidby theGovernment.Inaddition therewasanannualmaintenancegrantforrepairsand furnishings.

Dismissingfearsofexcessive Governmentalinterferencein

suchasystem,BrotherJustin iansaidthat,eveninthesecondaryschools,noteacherhad tobeagraduate.Allthatwas necessarywasthepassingofthe normalGovernmentexaminationforteachers.

Thebuildingofnewschools wastheBrothers'ownrespon- sibility.ButitwasgreatlyrelievedbythegenerosityofOld Boysandbygrantsfromthe Government.ThedelaSalle Brothersconductedmostofthe Catholicboys'schoolsinMalaya.Theyhad10largecolleges, allofwhichhadanenrolment ofatleast1,000.Inaditionthey hadtakenoverthedirectionof severalformerparochialschools.

Br.Justinianstatedthathe hadreceivedgreatcourtesyand helpfromthestaffofthe SydneyUniversityandexpressedsurprisethattheAustralian Governmentspentsomuchless oneducationthantheBritishdo inSingapore.

Itisasourceofdelightto G.K.C.thattheunchanging age-oldChurch,foundedby ChristHimself,isbeingregardedbythemodernsassomething new.Hecanunderstandhow apaganRomanofearlycenturieswouldfeartheChurch,and fearthathissonmightbring disgraceonthefamilyandthe familygodsbybecoming a Christian.WhydoesthemodernProtestantparentstillregardCatholicismintheselflameway?Chestertonisinclinedtoenjoythesituation.No modernparentfearsthathisson mightbecomeanArianoran Albigensian.Yettheseare newerreligionsthantheCatholicChurch.Andamongallthe modernfadsandintellectual fashions-spiritualism,socialism, Communism-Catholicismisstill regardedasadangerousrival.

-Thatonefleetingfashionhas refusedtofleet;andthatancient bitofmodernityisstillmodern. ItisstilltotheProtestantparentnowwhatitwastothe paganparentthen. Thereis somethingalmostlegendary aboutthereligionthatistwo thousandyearsoldnowappearingasarivalofnewreligions. Thatiswhathastobeexplainedandcannotbeexplained away;nothingcanturnthe legendintoamyth?'

Whenapersonsaysthat "RomanCatholicsaretaught thatanythingislawfulifdone forthegoodOftheChurch," theyaremakingastatement abouttheteachingsofthe Church.Theseteachingsare verydefiniteandcanbeverifiedeasily.Thereisnoexcuse forcontinuingtomakefalse statements.Itisnowonder thatChestertoncallstheseand similarprejudices"obvious blunders."

THEMYSTERY.

Therealmysterytohimis whypeoplecangoonmaking statementsattackingCatholicismwithoutfirstfindingout whatCatholicismis.Thosewho attacktheChurchinthisway wouldcondemnthePopefor beingamiserandaccusehim ofbeingaspendthrift.Aslong astheirheartsarefullof hatredforeverythingtheir fathersloved,itdoesnotmatter whatthereistohate.Theconclusionhecomestoisthatthese arenottherealreasonswhy peoplehesitateintheirapproach totheChurch.Itissoeasytt, findoutthefactsthatheregards theseattacksasasmokescreen withwhichthesepeopletryto hidetherealityfromthemselves,

REALREASONS.

Theunderlyingreasonswhy manyrefusetoheartheChurch isnotthattheyfearalossof libertynortheirresponsibility ofbeingtoldwhattobelieve. Whattheyfearisthattheywill beheldresponsibleforwhat theydo.IftheyembraceCatholicismtheywillberesponsibletosomeone,andtheywill havesomethingforwhichthey willbeheldresponsibleWith talkabouttheinsincerityof confession,theytrytosmother theirfearofitsdownrightsincerity.Withblatantfalsehood

aboutthecasuisty,cupidity,and immoralityoftheleadersofCatholicism,theyseek.tohidethe sadweaknessoftheirown humannature.Theyfearthe CatholicChurch,becauseofthe standardswhichitsetswhich veryoftengivethelietotheir ownlives.

HISOWNEXPERIENCE.

AlthoughforalongtimeChestertonhimselfhesitatedbefore heenteredtheChurch,hewas afterwardsproudtosayinthis bookthat,onceinside,hefound theperfectionofReasonand Liberty.Hereallybeganto think,becausehenowhad soundpremisesfromwhichto beginhisthinking;hefoundfull freedomwhichisthepowernot todoorthinkasweplease.liut asweoughtForhimCatholicismgivesthefullandsatisfactoryattitudetothewholeoflife. Itremainsalwaysnew,for whenothersexaggeratethisor thattruththeChurchkeepsit initstrueperspective.Even intheleakagefromtheChurch

thereisfoundagreattruth. ManyleavetheChurchbecause oftheirloveaffairs;fewleave becauseofthetheoriesofphilosophersorfanatics.Itisrarelythatapersonabandonsthe Churchforanotherreligion.

HewasordainedJuly11,1911,andwasconsecratedArchbishopofPragueonDecember8, 1946.

OnJune6,1942,Monsignor Reran-DoctorofTheologyand RectoroftheArchiepiscopal seminaryinPrague-wasarrestedbytheNaziGestapo.His offencewasthathevigorously championedtherightsofhis peoplebeforetheNaziswhooccupiedhiscountry.Hewas senttotheinfamousconcentrationcampofDachau,andwas liberatedonlybythearrivalof theAmericantroopssweeping acrossEuropein1945.

WhileinDachau,Monsignor Beranwonthehighesteemof Czechoslovakpoliticalprisoners whoalsowerethere.Subsequently,PresidentEduard Benes,ofCzechoslovakia,bestowedtwoofthecountry's highestdecorationsonMonsignorBeran,andlaudedhimpublicly.

TheChurchhadhaddifficultiesinCzechoslovakia,buton theeveoftheconsecrationof ArchbishopBeran,Prdsident Benessoughttoreassurehimof betterconditions,andrequestedhimtotry'topersuadethe clergyofSlovakia"thatthey wouldhavenothingtofearin thefuture.

Thefirstpublicutteranceof thenewArchbishopofPrague wasanappealforunity,with allCatholicsworkingforthe welfareoftheChurchandthe country.

COMMUNISTCOUPOF1948.

TheCommunistcoupseized controlofCzechoslovakiaon February23,1948,andconditionsbegantoworsensteadily. Inthemidstofthechaoticpoliticalconditions,theArchbishop ofPragueappealedtothepeopletobecalm,andtorespect lawandorder.

TheCommunistregimebegan atonceapressurecampaign againsttheCatholicChurch.It movedfirsttoseizeChurchownedlandswhichprovidedfinancialsupportforreligiousactivities.

January19,1949,theRed governmentsoughttocapitalise onanannouncementthatnegotiationswereinprogressbetweentheregimeandthe Episcopate,lookingtoasettlementofdifficulties.In relianceuponthisclaim, theBishops arranged a meetingamongthemselvesto studywaysandmeansofreachinganagreementwiththeregime.Whentheyassembledin whattheybelievedtobethe privacyofaseminary,theydiscoveredthatmicrophoneshad beenconcealedintheirconferenceroom.Themeetingdisbandedatonce,andtheBishops, apparently,neveragainfeltthat theycouldarrange'forafree discussionamongthemselves.

Church. Afewweredeceived.Oneofthem,theRev. JesefPloharenteredtheCommunistgovernmentasMinister ofHealth.

InApril,1949,Archbishop Beranprotestedto.President KlementGottwald,headofthe Communistregime,that"there isadditionalandirrefutable proofthatthegovernmenthad startedananti-Churchcampaign."Hesaidheknewthat "orderswithdetailedinstructions"hadbeenissuedbythe government.

InMay,1949,Archbishop Berantoldhisclergyinaletter thatallchurchschoolshadbeen nationalised,allCatholicpapers putoutofexistence.pilgrimages forbidden,proteststothegovernmentignored.Hedeclared theChurchwasdeprivedofits meansofsupport,andanyattemptatnegotiationwiththe regimewasinvain.

IMPRISONED,HOUSESEIZED ANDPLUNDERED.

TheRedgovernmentatonce steppedupitsanti-Church campaign.Spurious"Catholic Action"societieswereformed tomisleadthefaithful.Church collectionswereforbiddenin ordertoimpoverishtheChurch. Theregimeinsistedontheright toapproveclericalappointments,anditdemandedthatall childrenbeeducatedinthedoctrinesofMarx,Leninand Stalin.

Directpolicemeasureswere thentakenagainsttheArchbishopofPrague.Policeinvaded andsearchedhishouseearlyin June,1949.HisChancellor, theRev.RudolphDoerner,and hissecretary,FatherKucera, werearrested.Twoothersecretaries,Msgr.JanBoukaland theRev.VaclavPacha,werearrestedatothertimes.Armed guardswereplacedabouthis episcopalresidence,andCorn-

muniststookpositionsinsidethe house.

OnJune19,1949,Archbishop Beranwasmadeaprisonerin hisownhouse.

InaletterdatedAugust5, 1949',whichhemanagedtohave madepublic,ArchbishopBeran confirmedthathewasimprisonedinhisresidence.HeprotestedthattheChurchhadbeen "deprivedofitslegalindependenceininternalmatters."He declaredthatDr.Miroslav Houska,plenipotentiaryofthe MinistryofEducation,Science andArts,hadtakenoverhis house,wasusinghisarchiepiscopalsealandstationery,and "carriesoutcompletelyeverythingthatisconnectedwiththe officeoftaeChanceryofthe Archdiocese."Headdedthat Dr.Houskahadconfiscatedthe fundsofthechanceryandofthe archdiocese.

InDecember,1950,competent authoritiescorroboratedreports thatArchbishopBeranhadbeen removedfromhisresidence, presumablytoaprisonorconcentrationcamp.

BARREDFROMANSWERING STOCKREDCHARGES:

Allalong,ArchbishopBeran hasbeensubjectedtoavicious attackbygovernmentofficials andagents,inthepressand overtheradio.Hehasbeen accusedof"workingforalong timetospreaddisruptionand incitement":with"plotting againsttheRepublic,'andwith being"anti-democratic"anda "tool"oftheVaticanandof "imperialist"agents.Henever hadthesameopportunityto answerthesechargesthatthe Communistshadtomakethem, andsincehisarrestinJune, 1949,hehashadnoopportunitytoanswerthematall.

Therehavebeenfiveprevious group"trials"ofchurchmenin Red-ruledCzechoslovakiainless thanayear.Morethan30 priests,.monsignoriandBishops havereceivedprisonsentences astheresultofthese"trials."

inPrague,anddispatchingpastorallettersandepiscopalinstructionstothevariouspastors oftheirSees.Actingunilaterally thecommunistregimeofCzechoslovakiaturneditsbackupon centuries-oldpracticesandcustoms,andassertedtheseperfectlyharmlessadministrative dutiestobe"subversive"acts.

Itispointedoutthatin"convicting"thepriestsforthese purelyministerialacts,carried outunderthedirectionoftheir Bishops,theregimepavedthe wayforthe"conviction"ofthe Bishopswhoorderedtheseacts.

OsservatoreRomanohascommentedthatthe"people'sdemocracies"donotactuallyneed toconductthese"trials"intheir struggleagainsttheChurch. Theycouldadoptmoresubtle means.Theystagetheso-called trialsthepapersaid,inanattempttoavoidthecreationof martyrs.

Osservatorealsopointedout thatlastDecember,whena Bishopandeightofthebest knownpriestsandReligiousin Czechoslovakiawerebroughtto "trial,"foreignnewspapermen permittedtobepresentwere notallowedtobringalonginterpreters,butweretoldthat an"official" interpretation wouldbeprovidedoverearphones.

ArchbishopBeransaidover andoveragainthatCatholic priestsweretoabstainfromall politicalactivity,buttheCommunistpartykeptupanintensifiedprogrammeofpropaganda towintheclergyawayfromthe

Thepresentritesofbaptism areashortenedformofan eighthcenturyritualthough manypartsoftheceremonyare mucholder.Infactnopartof ourCatholicworshipsotruly preservesancientformsunchangedasdoesthebaptismalrite.

Theriteisdividedintothree partsofwhichthefirstisperformednowadaysatthedoorof thechurch,withintheporchwheretheconstructionofthe churchmakesthispossible.This partreproducesinoutlinethe ceremoniesofenrollingacatechumen.Onceaccepted,allthe energiesofhissponsorwere directedtowardsfreeinghim fromthepowerofSatan.Salt wasfortheancientstheuniversalinstrumentofpurification andpreservation.Duringhiscatechumenatetheriteofgiving saltwasrepeatedoverandover untilthetimeoffinaladmission toBaptismdrewnigh.Withthe givingofblessedsalttheenrollingofthecatechumenwas completed.Soattheendofthis firstpartofourpresentform saltisblessedandputonthe tongueofthecandidateto signifyhisreadinessforbap- tismandinordertogiveexpressiontotheChurch'sdesirethat hebepreservedfromthecorruptionofsin,andgivenarelish forheavenlydoctrine.The prayerthatgoeswiththerite expressesclearlythesymbolism involved.

Theprimarycreditforthis remarkablegrowthistheunfailinggenerosityoftheCatholicpeople.Gradually,asthe amazingstoryofCatholicMissionshasbeentoldtothem, theyhaverespondedinamagnificientmanner.TheAustralianHierarchyin1937resolvedtoestablishthePontifical Missionsocietiesonadiocesan basis.

Everymissionoftheworldis aidedbythePropagationofthe Faith.Theexactamountsare alwaysavailableattheNational Office.Eachyearacommittee oftheSacredCongregation ofPropaganda-theSuperior CounciloftheSociety,allocates asubsidytoeachmissionary Bishop.Thesumisdetermined bytheCongregationuponthe statisticsofeverymissionand theparticularopportunitiesfor expansionorotherwise.Hence nomatterhowoften,inpious exaggeration,itmaybesaidby thisorthatmissionarythat theyhavenohelpbut"yours"itremainsthatthePropagation oftheFaithsupportseverymission.

Theappealsmadedirectly byreligiousCongregationsin Australiaareanothermatter. First,everysuchappealneeds thepermissionoftheBishopof thedioceseinwhichtheappeal ismade.Secondly,theyshould alwaysberelegatedtoaplace afterthePope'sOwn-the propagationoftheFaith.Every missionSocietyorCongregation hasneedsbutitisputtingthe proverbialcartwelloutinfront ofthehorsetosupporttheparticularmissionstotheneglect oftheprimarymissionenterprise,theSocietyforthePropagationoftheFaith.Special appealswasteagooddeal especiallyinexchange.Thisis largelyavoidedbytheSociety ofthePropagationoftheFaith, astheCongregationusesits worldwideresourcesaccording tocurrencyvalues.Peoplewho send£1toIndiaarereally wasting5/-,forthissumislost inexchange.

SenatorCookereferredtothe vigorousdenunciationsofCommunism'carriedunanimouslyat theLaborParty'sFederalExecutiveandFederalConference meetingsin1947and1948,and unanimouslyreaffirmedatthe March,-1951,FederalConference.

Oneofthestatementsinthe Executivedecisionsaidthat "theLaborPartyvigorouslyrepudiatedtheCommunistParty ee

andallforwhichitstands.' FederalConferencefurtherdeclaredthat"theA.L.P.must carryonanincreasingcampaigndirectedatdestroyingthe influenceoftheCommunist Partywhereversuchexists throughoutAustralia,"and "congratulatedthosesectionsof theLabourMovementwhoare carryingonapersistentanddeterminedcampaignagainst Communistinfluenceintheirrespectiveorganisations."

SenatorCookealsoreferredto Mr.Chifley'spolicyspeech,in whichhesaid:"Wedidnot hesitatewhenweweretheGovernment,andwewillnothesitateinthefuture,tobringdown thefullrigourofthelawon thoseprovedtobeengagedin clearlysubversiveactivityin anywalkoflife.Ifneedbe, weshallstrengthenthelawto combatsuchactivity."
