Rev.P.Abramo,O.M.I.,arrivedatBoulder earlyintheweek,andincompanyoftheparish priest,theRev.P.Gallagher,visitedmorethan100 homesofItalianresidents,preparatorytogivinga Missioninthattongue.

Hewaswelcomedwithtremendousenthusiasmbyeveryone.TheMissionwaswellattendedeverynight,andthe newly-painted AllHallows' churchrangtothesingingof Italianhymns,wheneventhe secondandthirdgenerationof youngpeoplejoinedwholeheartedlyinthelanguageof theirfathsrland.Theresponse totheappealtoattendtheSacramentswasgreat,andageneralCommunionwasheldon April8.

TheMissionclosedwitha processioninhonourofOur Lady.ThestatueofOurLady ofFatima,onagailydecorated stand,wascarriedbyfournew Australiansrecentlyarrived fromItaly.Over300Italian parishionerswerejoinedby membersoftheHolyNamesociety,ChildrenofMarysodality,children,andthegeneral congregation,inacolourfulprocessionaroundthechurch grounds,whilehymnswere sungalternatelyinItaliana'.d English.FatherAbramopreachedtheoccasionalsermon.

ThePapalblessing,consecrationofthechildrentoOur BlessedLady,andrenewalof baptismalvow'swerefeatures oftheevening.

ThecommunitythenadjournedtoAllHallows'hall.ApictureofourHolyFather,surroundedbyPapalandItalian flags,stoodoutprominentlyin thedecoratedhall.

FatherAbramogaveanaddressonUnityoftheItalian CommunityunderCatholicAction.Hestressedthatthatwas theonlywaytobeunited.There followedanenjoyableevening ofsinging,nationaldancingand talk,followedbysupper.

BeforeleavingFatherAbramo istakingadvantageofthetre mendousenthusiasm,andisorganisingaBoulderbranchof CatholicAction.Hehaspromisedtore-visitinthenear future,andgiveeveryassistancetoassuresuccess.

FatherAbramoisleavingfor Gwalia.Leonora,andMenzies, andwillreturnnextweekto visittheNorsemanline.

Thiswillbefollowedbya shortMissioninKalgoorlie,probablycommencingThursday week,April19,andendingSunday,April22,withageneral Communion.Therewillbea socialinKalgoorlieonSunday evening.

FatherDzieciolleftforNorsemanthatday,andcontinuedon toGrassPatch.Leavingthere, hereturnedtoNorsemanfor MassonApril5.Thatevening hewenttoLakewoodandspent thenexttwodaysandnightsat thewoodline,hearingconfessions,sayingMass,andwith otherdevotionshelpingthePolishandGermanpeople.

OnApril7FatherDzieciolreturnedtoGrassPatchforconfessionsandeveningDevotions andMassonApril8,andthence toKalgoorlie.

ThisweekBoulder,Leonora, andSouthernCrosswillbevisited. AftertheMissionatKalgoorlietheNewAustralians wereinvitedtojointheLegion-

ariesofMaryforsupperinSt. Mary'shall.Theyaccepted, andrewardedthelegionariesby singingforthem. TheLegionofMaryAcies hadprecededtheMission,and theNewAustralianshadbeen presentinthechurchwhileit washeld.

OnFridayevening,April6,inSt.Mary'shall, Leederville,severaltalksweregivenontheCompulsoryMilitaryTrainingscheme,tobeintroduced bytheFederalGovernmentshortly.Thetalkswere givenundertheauspicesoftheYoungChristian Workers'movement,whichisatpresentengaged inacampaignconcerningthissubject.

-DuemainlyperhapstolackYCWChaplainExplains oftimeforpropagandapurposes,theattendancedidnotmeasureuptotheexpectationsof theorganizers!howeverthe25 Y.C.W.memberswhoattended showedtheirenthusiasmbythe numerousquestionsaskedthe speakersattheconclusionofthe talks.

Thelecturescommencedwith thechairman(HarryChild) introducingDuncanBeaton, presidentofLeedervilleY.C.W. andhosttothevisitors,togive theopeningaddress.Inthe courseofhisaddress,Duncan stressedtheinterestofthe Y.C.W.intheenvironmentof youth.Itfollowedtherefore thattheY.C.W.wasvitallyinterestedininformingmanyof itsmemberswhowereeligible forcall-upwhattheymustexpecttofaceinArmylife.Also toinstillintoyouththecorrect attitudetowardstheCompulsory MilitaryTrainingprogramme. Somechapsunfortunatelyhad awrongattitudei.e.escape fromresponsibilites.

Todaytherewasadefinite threatforournationandthey, asgoodAustraliancitizens shouldenterintotheCompulsoryMilitaryTrainingscheme withatruepatrioticspirit,soas todefendtheircountryifthe needarose.Duncanthenspoke onthepresentCompulsoryMi-litaryTrainingCampaignbeing conductedbytheY.C.W.Movement.TheEnquirymethodemployedbeingfullyexplained.In conclusionDuncanstatedthat theY.C.W.sincerelydesiredthatthetrainingschemewould bebeneficialtoAustralian youth.

MoralDangersinArmy

TheRev.Dr.E.Sullivan, diocesanY.C.W.chaplainanda WorldWar11Armychaplain gavethenexttalkentitled, "ReligionandtheArmy."Dr. Sullivanexplainedthathistalk intendedtoshowwhatayoung mancouldexpecttofindasregardshisreligion,duringhis camplife.Inordertodothis, thetalkwouldconsiderworship andmorality. Asregardsreligiouspractices theArmyheldatwofoldattitude.TheArmyrecognisedthe rightsofconscienceandthe Armyrealisedthatthepractice ofreligionboostedthemoral ofthetroops.However,through experienceasanArmychaplain,difficultiessometimesarose, Doctorexplained.Anexample wastheArmymanoeuvres whichcontinuedforawhole weekend.Insuchacasereligiousservicescouldnotbeheld.

Dr.Sullivanthenspokeof twooutstandingdifficultiesfacingY.C.W.memberswhowishedtoliveagoodlifeduringthe trainingperiod.Thesedangers weredrinkandimpurity.

Althoughthesedangers wouldnotbepronouncedin CompulsoryMilitaryTraining campsasinawar-timearmy servingoverseas,theywould neverthelessexist,duetoa specialpsychologydevelopedin ArmyLife.Concerningdrink, unlessthetraineeexercised rigidcontrolhewouldfindita definitedanger. Therecruitwouldalsofind inhisnewenvironmentthat therewereafewchapswho wouldpreachthatimpurecorn-

"Unlesswehadbeenproperly trainedourtroopswouldnot havebeensuccessfulindefeatingtheenemy,"Pte/Youngsaid.Nearlyeverycountrynorthof AustraliahasaRedtaintand eventhoughourcountryclaimedtobesecurefrominvasion becauseAustraliawasanisland, thiswasafalsesecurity.Ac-tuallythewarinKoreawas veryclosetous,itbeingonly 24hoursflyingtimefromPerth. Shouldwarcomeweshallnot havetimetotrainasbeforeand unlesswewerefullytrained wewouldbeovercome.Pte Youngalsospokeonthemany benefitsavailabletoArmytrainesswhichwerefarbetter thaninWorldWar11.

AustraliaIsWorld's 14th.WeakestCountry

Loudclappinggreetedthe mainspeakeroftheevening, SirCharlesLatham,Deputy DirectorofRecruiting,whenhe roseto Sovietaddresstheassembly. Russiaaloneseemedour enemyatpresent,saidSir Charlesandhasbeenvery luckyinbeingabletooverun 13 withoutEasternEuropeancountries resistance.Fromthe defenceangleitseemedthat Australiawasthe14thweakest country.Unfortunatelywehave averysmallStandingArmy, duetotheerrorofdemobilising afterthelastwar.Thereason fortheCompulsoryMilitary Trainingschemewasnotfor attackbutfordefendingourselves.EveninWorldWar11Australiahadyoungmenwhohad volunteeredbutwerenotwell trained.Becauseofscientific warfareAustraliawasnowex- tremelyclosetothehubofhostilities.

SpeakingofArmylife,Sir Charlesmentionedthehealthy sportsandamusementwhich wouldbeprovidedforrecruits. HeurgedY.C.W.memberswho mightbecalleduptopractise theirreligiontothefull."We don'twantwar,"saidSir Charles,"butwemustbepre- paredtodefendourcountryif attacked.TheArmywillalso builtyouupphysicallyandmouldcomradeshipsnevertobe forgotton."

Attheconclusionofthetalk questionswereinvitedand manyaskedbytheMovement members.Theeveningclosed withavoteofthanksextended tothespeakersandpamphlets ontheServicesdistributedto thoseseekinginformation.

CathedralGirls'Fancy Atthelastgeneralmeeting membersofCathedralbranch spentaveryenjoyableevening atsquaredancing.Theexecutivemembersthankthosewho helpedwiththeorganising.Itis hopedtobeabletocontinueat thenextcombinedgeneral meeting.Ameetingwillbeheld onApril17andbasketballpracticeonApril18.

HousePartyatWest PerthProvesPleasant GeneralmembersareremindedoftheirmeetingonThursday April19at8.15p.m.Badges andcrestsforbadge-giving nightwhichistobeonMay6th maybeobtainedatthemeeting.

FIFTYY.C.W.ATHLETESTAKE PARTINNARROGINCONTEST

TheY.C.W.Athleticclubtrip toNarroginonMarch31April 1weekendprovedtobea greatsuccess,inboththesportingandsocialaspects.Nine membersoftheN.C.G.M.Athleticclubwentwiththefifty Y.C.W. withathletes.These,together anumberoftheState's leadingathletes,bothmenand women,fromotherclubsgavea grandexhibitionofathleticsto theNarroginpublic.Someof theofficialsoftheclubtook theirwivesalong,andeveryonewhoattendedthetriphada wonderfultime.

DuringtheSaturdaymorning theofficialsoftheclubanda fewathletesattendedacivic receptioninourhonour.Owing to forthenumberitwasimpossible themalltoattend.

Theathleticmeetingonthe Saturdayafternoonwaswitnessedbyagoodcrowdfora countrytown.Between850and 900werepresent,andtheenthusiasticgatheringoflocalscertainlywasnotdisappointed.

BilldeGruchywonthemens' handicap100ydsinthetimeof 10secs.whichwasgoodconsideringthetrack,thehardtrottingtrack.ShirleyStrickland alsoshowedthemhergreat speedandversatilityinwinningthe100ydsandthe150yds. handicapforwomenofscratch.

Shirleyalsogainedsecond placein Johnstonthebroadjump.Verna wonthebroadjump andfinishedsecondinboththe 100yds.and150yds.0.Meyer ofN.C.G.M.finishedthirdinthe 100,whilethethirdplaceinthe 150wasfilledbyGwenMothershawofSurfClub.

FrankFoxwonthe440and 220 secondydshandicapandwas inthe100yds.These performanceswonhimthe trophypresentedtothemale athletetoscorethemostpointsfortheday.Thewomen'strophy,naturallyenough,waswon byShirleyStrickland.

GrahamAdairofY.M.C.A. showedhisamazinglongstride whilewinningthe880yds.and 1mile.Heranthe880yds.in theverygoodtimeof1min. 57.2secs,butitisthoughtthat thecoursewasnotquitehalfa mile.Butneverthelessitwasan excellentrunconsideringthe jarringsurfaceofthetrack.K. Salt,althoughhedidnotreach hisbestdistance,showedhis nicestylewhilewinningthe broadjump.DonKeanegave mostoftheonlookerstheirfirst glimpseoffirstclasswalking. whenhewonthemileingood stylewithplentytospare.The javelinthrowwaswonbyJohn CrowewithBilldeGruchygivinghisfirstpublicexhibition ofjavelinthrowing,aclose secondwithagoodthrowof about130ft.

TheboysfromtheNarrogin Schoolofagriculturegavea finedisplayofgymnasticsasa breakfromtheathleticevents. Thisdisplayinadditiontothe athleticprogramme,provided anexcellentdayofevents,and wasenjoyedbyall.

OnSaturdaynightadance wasarrangedfortheathletes.It provedaveryenjoyablenight.

TheMostRev.Dr.A.Gummer,BishopofGeraldton,left bytrainduringtheweekfor theEasternStateswherehewill attendtheCatholiccelebrations inconnectionwiththeCommonwealthjubilee.

FiveEasternStates PriestsPassThrough

WhentheOrontesberthedat FremantleonApril10several EasternStatespriests,whowereaboard,tookadvantageofthe vessel'sstayinporttorenewseminaryfriendships.Among themweretheRev.H.B.Skehan ofEdwardstown,S.A.,theRev. D.B.O'Sullivan,ofGlenelg, S.A.;theRev.D.O'Callaghanof Footscray,Vic.;andtheRev. FatherFarrellofQueensland.ThepriestsareenrouteforIrelandonfurlough.

Thelocalswereverypleasedto seeandmeetpersonallysomeof theState'sleadingathletes, includingworldfamousstars suchasBilldeGruchy,Shirley StricklandandVernaJohnston. ThePerthtouchaddedtothe bandduringthelatterpartof theeveningwasgreatlyappre- ciatedbythelocalsaswellas thevisitingathletes.Mrs.HOgan certainlyaddedvimtotheband andthedanceassheplayed thepianoinherfamiliarstyle.

AccordingtotheBible,thelifeismorethantheraiment-yetmanysocialreformersadvocatetheloweringof thebirthrateasaremedyfordepression.Theyalsoadvocateitastheonlyremedyforover-population.Only theotherday,itwassuggestedthatJapanmightprofitably beinstructedinthematter,inordertoovercometheproblemofitsteemingmillions.ItisverydoubtfulifJapan willbegratefulforthesuggestion,foritwillbefoundthat thiscountryismoreconversant,ifnotwiththelawofGod, atleastwiththosesociallawswhichgovernthesurvivalof nations.Thehistoryofanationissomewhatakintothat oftheindividual.Itisstrengthenedbyadversity:but morefrequentlyweakenedbyluxuryandvice.ThespartanelementinGreeklifestoodforstabilityandpermanence, butthesybariticluxuryoflateryearsnullifieditsinfluence andsowedtheseedsofdecay.ThesamemisfortunebefellPaganRome,whenthearistocracydisregardedthe trueinstinctsoffamilylife,anditlooksasifsomeEuropean countriesareheadingforasimilarfatebyadvocatingpracticesregardingmarriageandparenthoodessentiallyopposedtothewell-beingofsociety.Divorceandbirthcontrol haveplayedhavocwithFrance'spopulationforthelast hundredyears.Italy,underMussolini,caughtupwith Franceandbadefairtodominate,bymereforceofnumhers.mostEuropeanStates.Britainhadalsostartedon thedownwardtrack.Herbirthratehadbeengradually diminishingforthepastfiftyyears,withtheresultthat authoritiesconsideredthatanotherfiftyyearswouldwitnessastationarypopulation.

Therootoftheevilistobetracedtothenation's neglectofreligion.InEnglanditwastheReformation. InFranceitwastheRevolution.Eachcountrylegalised divorce,andmanyothersfollowedtheirexample.Divorce tendstothedestructionofahealthyfamilylife,whichis essentialtotheState'swell-being.Sincemereselfishness isattherootofdivorce,countrieswhichtolerateitsimultaneouslybegintocontrolthebirthrate.Adecliningbirth rateisthesimplestmeansofdestroyinganationandrenderingitscitizensdecadent.Suchisthetemporalevilattendingsuchabominablepractices.The'CatholicChurch aloneupholdsthesanctityofmarriage,andgivestheworld alogicalandunequivocalteaching.ForCatholicsmarriageisoneoftheSevenSacraments.ItisaDivineinstitution.carryingwithitthesupportofDivinegrace.Its objectistoaddaDivinestabilitytowhatmightotherwise becomefickle.Itisimpliedinthewordsoftheceremony: "Forbetter,forworse,tilldeathdouspart."Ithasbesidesanotherobject.Itenablesthemtobeartheresponsibilityofparenthood.Itisthislatentresponsibility whichmakesmarriedlifelawful.Iftheresponsibilitybe shirked,itresultsinsheerselfishness.Thatiswhatmarriagetendsto,oncethereligiousaspectisexcluded,and thatiswhatithascometoinmanyinstancesoutsidethe Fold.TheonlyformofbirthcontrolwhichtheChurch recognisesisthatwhichisbasedonvoluntaryself-control. Nocompromiseisallowedinthematter.

Catholicteachingismostreasonableandlogical.By contrast,theoppositeteachingisillogical.Acivilisation thatboastsofitschivalrytowardswomankinditselfcasts thefirststone.Divorcebeginsandendsingraveuncharitableness,nottospeakofthegraveinjusticetooneofthe parties,andtothechildren,ifany.Modernsarecontinuallyharpingonthesanctityofhumanlife.Itpunishes murderwiththecapitalpenalty.Yetsocietycondonesthe practiceofchildmurder.Themedicalprofessionisoften guiltyinthematter-thatprofessionthatisintendedto savelife,nottodestroyit.Itoughttoheasgreatacrime topreventthebirthofaninfantastodestroyanadult.It isasgreatasininGod'seyes.andnosuchflimsyreasonas povertyorover-populationwillsufficetojustifyit.Itisto behopedthatJapanorChinawillnevertakeadvantageof thegratuitousadvicetenderedbyourmodernirresponsible scientists.

Thosewhocameincontact withherwereimpressedbyher morethanordinaryholiness,an impressionwhichwasconfirmed bytheworldwideveneration whichshebegantoenjoyalmost immediatelyafterherdeath.A shortaccountofherlifewrittenbyherconfessorandsoon translatedintoseverallanguages wasreadeagerlybypeopleof allclassesallovertheworld. Czechoslovakiais another countrywhichtheCommunists arethrottlingandholdingbeneaththedarkwatersofterrorismandindoctrination.Asin thecaseofYugoslaviaandHungary,theCatholicChurchhas remainedthelastconsiderable forcetostandinthewayof totalitariansavagery.And,as "OsservatoreRomano"hasremarkededitorially,whatever maybethedifferencesbetween Communistcountries,"their unanimityagainsttheCatholic Churchisunbreakable."This isemphasisedbythefantasy andsimilarityofthecharges levelledagainstArchbishop Stepinac,CardinalMindszenty. andArchbishopBeran-"crimes againstthepeople,""anti-nationalactivities."

Actually,theCommunistregimesofthethreecountries couldnothavepickedthreepersonsmoreinnocentofsuch charges.Perhapsthisinconsistencyisexplainedbythe factthatallthreecountrieshave beenthoroughlydominatedby Moscowwhenthe"trials"were staged.Titowasongoodterms withtheKremlinwhenhe "tried"ArchbishopStepinac.

ThearrestofArchbishop Stepinacwasforeseenafterthe BishopsofCroatiainYugoslaviahadissuedapastoral chargingthat"theenemiesof theCatholicChurch,beingalso followersofmaterialisticcommunism,whichtheentireCroatiannationwithoneassent rejects,haveinourCroatiaexterminated,withfireandsword, priestsandthemoreeminentof thefaithful."

ThearrestofCardinalMindszentycouldbeforeseenwhen MatyasRakosi,deputypremier andthereal"power"inRed Hungary,keptuphissteady propagandaagainstHisEminence,seekingtocreatethe impressionthatthecommunist mastersofthecountrywere being"reluctantly"drivenby the"spontaneousforcesof publicopinion"toendtheir "excessivepatience"indealing withthe"reactionaryforces hidingbehindthecloakofthe Church."

Thesamepatternhasbeen followed.againstArchbishop Beran.TheregimeinCzechoslovakiahasattemptedtocreate theimpressionitwasseeking anagreementwiththeEpiscopate,atthesametimemaking anagreementimpossible.Itcontinueditsoppressionofthe Church,andconstantlystepped upitsvilificationofArchbishop Beran.

ThesecretariesofArchbishop Stepinac,CardinalMindszenty andArchbishopBeranwereall arrested,imprisonedand"conditioned"beforetheirsuperiors weretakenintocustody.

ArchbishopStepinacwas broughtto"trial"lessthantwo weeksafterhisarrestonSeptember18,1946,at6inthe morning.CardinalMindszenty wasbroughtto"trial"aboutsix weeksafterhisarrestduring thenightonDecember26,1948.

ArchbishopBeranhasbeen finedandbanishedmorethan ayearandahalfafterhisarrestonJune19,1949.His"conditioning"maytakelonger,and maybeappliedinthelightof previousexperience.

ArchbishopStepinacandCardinalMindszentywereseized whileexercisingtheiroffices andrushedto"trial"whilevery muchbeforethepubliceye.

ArchbishopBeranhasdeliberatelybeenpreventedfrom exercisinghisofficeandhas beenkeptoutofthepubliceye formorethanayearanda halfbeforehisbanishment.

WhentheystruckatArchbishopStepinacandCardinal Mindszenty,theRedsbegan theirdrivesagainsttheCatholic ChurchinYugoslaviaand Hungarybyattackingatthe top,"trying"andvilifyingfirst theleadingmemberofthe Hierarchyineachcountry. Worldreactionandrevulsion wasstrongandcontinued.

InthecaseofArchbishop Beran,theRedsseemtohave workeduptothetopofthe HierarchyinCzechoslovakia, asifto"condition"theworld fortheprosecutionoftheArchbishopofPrague.TheCommunistsin.Czechoslovakiahave already"tried"and"convicted" aconsiderablenumberofpriests andabbots,twoauxiliary bishopsandtwobishops,withoutstirringuptheworldreactionthatthe"trials"ofArchbishopStepinacandCardinal Mindszentyprovoked.Possibly, theyfeelthatinthiswaythey havepavedthewayforamore orlessquiet"trial"ofArchbishopBeran.

WordfromJapanstatesthat theCatholicsofHiroshimaheld aretreatunderaCatholicpriest intheBuddhisttempleofKokutaiji,MonsignorSheensaid.

"TheBuddhistpriestshadofferedtheirhospitalitytotheCatholicsinviewofthefactthat theChurchoftheAssumption ofOurLadywasdestroyedat HiroshimabytheA-pombin 1945,andhasnotyetbeenrebuilt,"hecontinued."The Buddhistprieststhemselvesreverentlyattendedalltheconferences,joiningintheCatholic Rosary."

MarjorieLawrencewas,of course,themaincentreofinterestformostoftheaudience, andthedemonstrationofPerth's warmadmirationforhergallant fightagainstillnessenveloped tierinaglowwhichobviously movedheralmosttotears.She madetwoappearances,singing Tatiana's"LetterSong"from Tchaikowsky's"EugeneOnegin" and"Isolde'sNarrationfrom "TristanandIsolde,"byWagner.Shehasavoiceoftremendousandeffortlesspower andmagnificentrange,alliedto adramaticintensityoffaceand gesturewhichnoteventhehandicapofpoliomyelitiscanconceal.

Theprogrammeopenedwith afaultlessperformanceof Glinka'sOverturetoRusslan andLudmilla.Havingused theword"faultless,"Icanadd littlemore,certainlynothing derogatory.Itsetthestagefor areallyfineevening'smusic withitsvigourofattackinall sectionsanditsperfecttiming.

Mozart'sSymphonyNo.35in DMajor("TheHaffner")per- hapssufferedbycontrastwith thecolourfulcharactersofthe precedingitem,but,nevertheless,therewasatendencyfor thewholeworktosoundlikea successionofnotes,andIhave neverfoundthe"Haffner"dull. ThemaincriticismInotedwas ablurringofMozart'sclean linesinthesecondmovement, Andante,andinthefirsthalfof thefinalmovement.Thelatter mayhavebeenexcusableasthe movementisPresto,butthere waslessexcuseinthelovely Andintesection,whichshould

haveflowedmuchmoresmoothly. IntheRhapsody,"AShropshireLad,"GeorgeButterworth haswrittenoneoftheloveliest tonepicturesinmusicofthe Englishcountryside,ranging fromthesoft,mistyatmosphere ofthecopsesandthelittle brookletstothepanoramaofthe openmoorsandthedistant visionofthehills.Theorchestrainterpretedtheopening andclosingscenesextremely well,buttherewasabrashness aboutpartsofthemiddlesectionthatseemedstrangelyout ofplaceinsosensitiveapainting. Theorchestrareturnedafter intervaltogiveoneofthebest performancesofitscareer.

CasarFranck'sSymphonyinD Minorseemstoencompassin

oneworkthedepthoftheclassicalperiodandthefacileness ofthe"tonepoem,"inwhich emotionalismisgivenfreerrein thanitwasintheworksof BeethovenandBrahms.Itis inthemaintenanceofabalance betweenthesetwothatthe SymphonyinDMinorcanbe wellorbadlyperformed,and Saturdaynight'sinterpretation andperformancewerepracticallyimpeccable.Thefirstmovement,Lento-Allegro non troppo,waspowerful,clean-cut, andsinging.Thesecondmovement-Allegretto-wasnotable forthebeautifulstringquality, andforsomedelightfulwork fromthewoodwindsection.A minorfaultinthethirdmovementwastheratherharshqualityintheintroductionofthe secondsubject,butthework closedwithamagnificentcoda, bringingtoanendaconcert whichmusthavegiventheconductorandorchestraasgreata thrillasitdidthecapacityaudience.

Wemaybeforgiven,then,for wonderingsometimeswhatin reallifeourownCatholicancestorswouldthink,ifthey weretocomebackagainand visitAustraliaafterthepast hundredyearsofhistory.

THEPAST.

Theywouldcomerememberingtheirownstruggles,the fightagainststarvation,the clearingoftalltimbers,the drainingofstagnantswamps, theconqueringofopenspaces, theloneliness,theisolation,the heroismofitall.Theywould recall,too,thetimesthey gatheredtosaytheRosary whennopriestwasavailable, andtheheroiclaboursofsome pioneerprieststrugglingtotend aparishtheboundariesofwhich wereequaltotheboundariesof Europe.Theywouldthinkof theireffortstobuildalittle church,theirhopesforaschool fortheirchildren.Theywould rememberthetimetheyknelt atthebedsideofadevotedpartnerintrials,hopingandprayingthatthepriestwouldbeable tocomeadistanceequaltothe lengthofIrelandorEnglandto ministertothedying.Eagerly theywouldlooktoseewhat char4;estimehadbroughtand whatreliefhadcomefromthe strugglesoftheirownday.

MATERIALADVANCEMENT.

Onallsidesnowtheywould seematerialdevelopmentand prosperity,whichonlyafew couldeverhavedreamedwas possible.Theywouldfind thrivingcities,extraordinary ruralandindustrialworks,and apopulationwhich,onthe whole,iseagerforfurtherdevelopment.Onthematerial sidetheywouldbepleasedand astonishedatwhatthepassage ofyearshadbrought.

THECHURCH.

TheChurch,too,theywould observe,haskeptpacewiththe rapiddevelopmentofthecountryasawhole.Theywould seegreatcathedralsandhandsomechurchesfromcoastto coast.OnSundays,andeven daily,crowdsthrongingtothese churches,adoringtheirGodand unitingintherenewalofthe SacrificeofRedemption.The sacramentsandthepriesthave beenbroughtclosetothepeople.Schoolsandcharitable institutionsareeverywhere, cateringfortheneedsofthe peopleandbreathingthespirit ofChristlivingamongstus. Theywouldbehappy,indeed, becauseoftheseachievements ofwhichtheChurchinAustrahaissojustlyproud.

DARKNESSAROUND.

Yet,likeRipVanWinkle,theywouldnotunderstandall thattheysaw;theywouldbe puzzledbysomethings.By oneofthosegreatcatastrophes ofhistory,whichcanbeexplainedonlybytheinterven-
