Over400membersoftheLegionofMary, activeandauxiliary,attendedtheannualAcies ceremonyatSt.Mary'sCathedralonSunday,April 1. Asthisassemblagewasthebiggestever,it servestoindicatethegrowingstrengthoftheLegion,andaugurswellforitsfuture.
TherenewaloftheActof FealtyorLegionPromiseby370 legionariesandeightLegion chaplainswascertainlyavery impressivesight.Godalone knowshowmanysoulswillbe savedthroughthezealofthis formidablebandoflayapostles.
Besidesrepresentativesfrom eachPraesidiuminthemetropolitanareaandFremantledistricts,thereweremembers fromtheoutpostsoftheArchdiocese,andevenbeyond.The QueenofPeacepraesidium, Broome,wasrepresentedbythe president,BrotherPhilipCox, andthesecretary,BrotherAnthonyOzie.ItisverydoubtfulifanAciesceremonyanywhereintheworldcouldboast ofrepresentativestravellingthe distance-equivalentofBroome toPerth-about1,600miles.The HouseofGoldpraesidium,Kalgoorlie,wasrepresentedbythe secretary.SisterTurner,andthe QueenofApostles'praesidium Albany,wasrepresentedbythe president,SisterBenson.The Acieswasgivenaninterstate flavourbythepresenceofavisitorfromMelbourne-Sister Doherty,oftheReginaCoeli Presidium.
TheRosaryandopeningprayerswererecitedbyFather Ryan.FatherO'Sullivan,0.M.I., preachedtheoccasionalsermon, inwhichheoutlinedthegrowth oftheLegion,showinghowthe seedsowninDublin30years agohascometofruition.The numericalstrengthoftheLegionofMaryto-dayprovesthat

theseedwasplantedingood soil,receivedtherightnourishment,andisblessedwithincrease.Throughouttheworld thereareaboutonemillionlegionariesstrivingbythetwofold apostolateofworkandprayer tomakeChristbetterknown andloved.
Thepreacherstressedthe necessityofpersonalholinessintheLegionary,and warnedthemofthecommon erroramongthemofconcentratingonthesanctificationof theirneighbours'ssoul,while neglectingthesanctificationof theirown.
Tocultivateadeepinterior life,Fatherrecommendedvery stronglythepracticeofdaily meditation.Hesuggestedthree subjectsonwhichLegionaries couldmeditatewithgreatprofit:
(a)OurBlessedLady-the modeloftheinteriorlife.
(b)TheLittleFlower-her loveofGodandzealfor soulsformthefoundationof thetrueapostolate.
(c)TheMysticalBodyof Christ-invirtueofwhich theDivineLifeofChrist flowsthrougheachofus. Thesermonendedwithaquo- tationfromaFrenchBishop: `Themoreyoureadaboutthe Legionandseethefruitsofits work,themoreyouareconvincedthatit thesignature ofGodHimself." Beforetherecitationofthe concludingprayers,Benediction oftheBlessedSacramentwas givenbyFatherMacDonald,assistedbyFatherKelly.MembersoftheseniorPresidium fromSt.CharlesSeminaryact'edasacolytes.
Thosewhowereprivilegedto bepresentatthismemorable Aciesceremonyof1951willnot easilyforgetthewonderful demonstrationofLegionloyalty andLegionzeal.Itmaybe humblyhopedthattheLegionof MaryinWestAustraliawill continuetoflourish,andthat throughtheinstrumentalityof Mary'slegionariescountless soulswillbewonforChrist.

In1947,alearnedanddevout Archbishop,thelateCardinal Suhard,thenArchbishop01 Paris,issuedaremarkableLentenpastoral,withthestriking title:"TheRiseorDeclineofthe Church."Thiswasitstheme: Fromourdyingcivilisationa newcivilisationwasbeingborn, andtomanyitseemed,judging fromoutwardappearances,that theChurchwasdoomedtodie withthecivilisationwhichshe, inlargepart,created.Thiswas nottrue.Onthecontrary,the Churchwasdestinedtorise againwithinthisnewworld thatwasrisingfromtheruins oftheold,dyingworld.
FortheChurchhastwoaspects:theChurchisatonce divineandhuman,aswasher Founder.Byreasonofthe first,thedivineaspectthe

ThougheverythingintheBibleistrue,itis'notnecessarilytrueinthesamesense.Thesameappliestoevery branchofliterature.Therearevariousformsofspeechin use,suchasmetaphor,parable,fable,proverbs,poetry. drama,aswellashistoricalcomposition.Itisimmaterial tothesublimelessonsconveyedby"Othello,"forinstance. whethersuchapersonas"theMoorofVenice"everactuallyexisted.Yetitcontainsdidactictruth,thoughnothistoricallytrue.So,too,withtheProdigalSonintheparable,andwithJobinthatdramaticwork.Thisdistinction appliestoalltheBilbe.Godusedthehumanwriterwith hismethodsofliteraryexpressionasameansofcommunicatingtousHismessage.WhenwesaythatallScriptureistrue,wehavetoexaminetheparticularformofliteraryexpressionthatisbeingemployedbeforewecan judgewhetheritishistoricordidactictruththatisbeing taught.
Butperhapstherearehistoricerrorsinthepartsofthe Biblethatareconfessedlyhistoricalrecords?Notallthe researchoffriendorfoehasbeenabletofindonehistorical errorintheBible.Onthecontrary,theresearchwork, sofarasithasproceeded.hassubstantiatedthetrutheven inminutedetailsoftheBiblenarrative.TheNewTestamentgivesthebestopportunityforcomparisonwithcontemporaryhistory.Yetinspiteof150yearsofuntiring investigation,notasinglehistoricalerrorhaseverbeen proved.Itisadvisable,therefore,tobeonone'sguard againstacceptingboldstatementsabouterrorsintheBible whichareconstantlytobetracedtorationalisticoratheisticwriters,andw-hichhavenofoundationinfact.

ArchbishopBeranwasbornin Pilsen,theindustrialcityin westernBohemia,December29, 1888.Hetookadoctoratein Romein1912,returnedhometo 15yearsofpastoralactivity nearPrague,thentaughtuntil 1933,whenhewas.namedrectorofthePragueArchiepiscopalSeminary,anofficeheheld whenhewasnamedArchbishop ofPrague.
OnJune6,1942,Monsignor BeranwasarrestedbytheGestapoduringtheNazioccupation ofCzechoslovakia.Thereason forhisarrestwasthathehad beenunyieldinginthedefence ofhispeoplebeforetheoccupationleaders.ThefutureArchbishopwassenttothe..infamous Dachauconcentrationcamp, wherehewontheadmirationof Czechpoliticalprisonerswho werealsothere.Heremained atDachauuntilhewasliberatedbytheAmericanforcesthree yearslater.Hethenreturned tohisdutiesinPrague.
PresidentEduardBenes,of Czechoslovakia,decoratedMonsignorBeranwiththeCzechoslovakWarCrossof1939and theCzechoslovakMilitary Medal.ShortlybeforeMtnsignorBeran'sconsecrationas Archbishop,PresidentBenes askedhimto"persuadethe Slovakprieststhattheyneed nothaveanyapprehensionin mattersoffaithandreligion."

Thefirstpublicaddress ArchbishopBeran,asOrdinary ofPrague,wasanappealfor unity,withallCatholicsworkingtogetherforthebenefitof theChurchandthecountry.
Earlyin1948,onlyafewdays beforetheCommunistsseized controlofthecountry,the ArchbishopofPragueaddressed alargemeetinginhisSeecity whichheorganisedtoexerta moralinfluenceforworldpeace. TheArchbishopaddressedhimselftotheworld'sstatesmen, andappealedto"theChristian conscienceofthewholeworld" toworkforpeace.
TheCommunistcoupofFebruary23,1948,seizedcontrolof Czechoslovakia.Whilethedays ofpoliticalcrisiswereshaking thenation,theArchbishopof Pragueurgentlycalleduponhis faithfultoprayferventlyfor thepreservationofpeaceand calmnessinthenation.

TheR?dsbeganpressureon theChurchwiththeseizureof church-ownedlands,whichprovidedfinancialsupportforCatholicinstitutions.Archbishop Beranappealedtohispeopleto maintainlawandorder,andat thesametimewarnedthegovernmentthatits"schoolreform" lawwasdestinedtoprovokea culturalstruggleifenactedas drafted.

OnJanuary19,1949,theregimesoughttomakecapitalof anannouncementthatnegotiationshadbegunbetweenthe EpiscopateandtheRedregime, lookingtoanagreement,but thepersecutionincreased.

Forayearormorenow,informedpersons,bothhereand inEurope,havefreelypredicted thatArchbishopBeranwould bebroughtto"trial"whenhis Redcaptorsfeeltheyareready toexploittothefullestsucha travestyonjustice.
LastDecember,well-informedsourcescorroboratedearlier reportsthatArchbishopBeran hadbeenremovedfromhis archiepiscopalresidence,where hehadbeenheldincommunicadosinceJune,1949.Presumably,hehadbeentakeneither toaprisonortoaconcentration camp.ThiswasheldtoindicatethattheRedregimewas takinganotherstepinitseffortsto"condition"theArchbishopofPragueforapublicised`trial."
