Some150graduatesandundergraduatesof theUniversityassembledtocelebrateNewman SundayonApril1,andenteredSt.Mary'sCathedralforthe8o'clockMassinprocessionalorder, garbedinacademicdress. AfterwardsabreakfastwasheldattheY.A.L.hall.

VeryRev.T.J.Barden,SJ rectorofSt.Louisschool,and chaplainoftheNewmansociety, wascelebrantoftheMass.The Rev.E.Sullivanpreachedthe occasionalsermon.

Atthebreakfast,Mr.J. Levan,LL.B.,wastheprincipal speaker.Heoutlinedthelife ofNewmanfromthetimehe wasatSt.Mary's,Oxford,and exhortedundergraduatesto fashiontheiruniversitycareer onhis.

AvoteofthankswasproposedbySenatorDorothyTangneyonbehalfofthegraduates. TheSenatorspokeoftheneed ofasocietyforgraduateswho wereprecludedfrommembershipoftheNewmansociety. Shesuggestedthecompilation ofalistofprofessionalpersons towardsthisend.

ThisBranchintendholdinga cardpartyintherooms,Nestle House,onTuesday,April10,at 8p.m.,whenanenjoyableeveningispromisedtoall.

Over400membersoftheLegionofMary, activeandauxiliary,attendedtheannualAcies ceremonyatSt.Mary'sCathedralonSunday,April 1. Asthisassemblagewasthebiggestever,it servestoindicatethegrowingstrengthoftheLegion,andaugurswellforitsfuture.

TherenewaloftheActof FealtyorLegionPromiseby370 legionariesandeightLegion chaplainswascertainlyavery impressivesight.Godalone knowshowmanysoulswillbe savedthroughthezealofthis formidablebandoflayapostles.

Besidesrepresentativesfrom eachPraesidiuminthemetropolitanareaandFremantledistricts,thereweremembers fromtheoutpostsoftheArchdiocese,andevenbeyond.The QueenofPeacepraesidium, Broome,wasrepresentedbythe president,BrotherPhilipCox, andthesecretary,BrotherAnthonyOzie.ItisverydoubtfulifanAciesceremonyanywhereintheworldcouldboast ofrepresentativestravellingthe distance-equivalentofBroome toPerth-about1,600miles.The HouseofGoldpraesidium,Kalgoorlie,wasrepresentedbythe secretary.SisterTurner,andthe QueenofApostles'praesidium Albany,wasrepresentedbythe president,SisterBenson.The Acieswasgivenaninterstate flavourbythepresenceofavisitorfromMelbourne-Sister Doherty,oftheReginaCoeli Presidium.

TheRosaryandopeningprayerswererecitedbyFather Ryan.FatherO'Sullivan,0.M.I., preachedtheoccasionalsermon, inwhichheoutlinedthegrowth oftheLegion,showinghowthe seedsowninDublin30years agohascometofruition.The numericalstrengthoftheLegionofMaryto-dayprovesthat

theseedwasplantedingood soil,receivedtherightnourishment,andisblessedwithincrease.Throughouttheworld thereareaboutonemillionlegionariesstrivingbythetwofold apostolateofworkandprayer tomakeChristbetterknown andloved.

Thepreacherstressedthe necessityofpersonalholinessintheLegionary,and warnedthemofthecommon erroramongthemofconcentratingonthesanctificationof theirneighbours'ssoul,while neglectingthesanctificationof theirown.

Tocultivateadeepinterior life,Fatherrecommendedvery stronglythepracticeofdaily meditation.Hesuggestedthree subjectsonwhichLegionaries couldmeditatewithgreatprofit:

(a)OurBlessedLady-the modeloftheinteriorlife.

(b)TheLittleFlower-her loveofGodandzealfor soulsformthefoundationof thetrueapostolate.

(c)TheMysticalBodyof Christ-invirtueofwhich theDivineLifeofChrist flowsthrougheachofus. Thesermonendedwithaquo- tationfromaFrenchBishop: `Themoreyoureadaboutthe Legionandseethefruitsofits work,themoreyouareconvincedthatit thesignature ofGodHimself." Beforetherecitationofthe concludingprayers,Benediction oftheBlessedSacramentwas givenbyFatherMacDonald,assistedbyFatherKelly.MembersoftheseniorPresidium fromSt.CharlesSeminaryact'edasacolytes.

Thosewhowereprivilegedto bepresentatthismemorable Aciesceremonyof1951willnot easilyforgetthewonderful demonstrationofLegionloyalty andLegionzeal.Itmaybe humblyhopedthattheLegionof MaryinWestAustraliawill continuetoflourish,andthat throughtheinstrumentalityof Mary'slegionariescountless soulswillbewonforChrist.

PreachingtotheUniversitymembersatSt. MarysCathedralonApril1,theRev.Dr.E.Sullivanspokefromthetext: Thousayest thatIamaKing.Forthiswas IbornandforthisIcameinto theworld,thatIshouldgive testimonytothetruth.Everyonethatisofthetruthheareth myvoice.Pilatesaidtohim: Whatistruth?"Dr.Sullivan saidthatthescenetookplace twothousandyearsago;the conflicthadenduredfromthen untilnow:ontheoneside,the voiceofChristintheChurch whichgivestestimony,tothe truth;ontheotherside,the multitudinousdiscordantvoices, whichareoneVoice,cryingout, Whatistruth?Fundamentally, itwasaconflictofideas,and itsprotagonistswereleadersof thought.Yetitwasnotmerelyanacademicconflict,confined tothehallsofuniversities,orto the permeatedwritiglearnedscholars; ithadp thewhole structureofhumansociety.Its effectonman'slifehadbeenfelt always,and,inourday,was beingfelttothefull.They couldnotbutfeelitsimpact. Howweretheytomeetit?

In1947,alearnedanddevout Archbishop,thelateCardinal Suhard,thenArchbishop01 Paris,issuedaremarkableLentenpastoral,withthestriking title:"TheRiseorDeclineofthe Church."Thiswasitstheme: Fromourdyingcivilisationa newcivilisationwasbeingborn, andtomanyitseemed,judging fromoutwardappearances,that theChurchwasdoomedtodie withthecivilisationwhichshe, inlargepart,created.Thiswas nottrue.Onthecontrary,the Churchwasdestinedtorise againwithinthisnewworld thatwasrisingfromtheruins oftheold,dyingworld.

FortheChurchhastwoaspects:theChurchisatonce divineandhuman,aswasher Founder.Byreasonofthe first,thedivineaspectthe

Ifthisistrue,continuedthe preacher,allclassesofpeople withintheChurchmustparticipateinthisfulfilmentofherunchangingdestinyandeachclass hasitsownparticulartask.Not leastamongthesetasksisthat oftheCatholicstudentandthe Catholicscholar.Thefirst apostolateis"theapostolateof thought":aworldistransformedbyideasinthefirstplace. Thatwasforthem,formostof thematleast,theapostolateof thepresentmoment;theywere togivetestimonytothetruth.

Inthepursuitofthisapostolatetherewerecertainfundamentalprinciplestoberecognisedandrespected.Otherwise onlyconfusionwouldresult. Thefirstwasdisinterestedness. Theyshouldnotmakethemistakeofthinkingthatthe Churchregulatedtheirthinkinginthestudyofhuman thingsorattemptedtocontrol theprogressanddevelopment ofsecularlearning.Theirswas thesearchfortruth.Whatthe

Thesecondprinciplewasthe securityofFaith.Theyshould notfearthatinthelegitimate searchforknowledgethey wouldarriveatconclusionsincompatiblewiththeirreligious beliefs.WhereverTruthled them.itcouldnotleadthem awayfromChristbutmustlead themnearertoHim-"Everyone thatisoftheTruthhearethmy voice."Wheretherewasdefection,itwasduetohuman inadequacy.

Thethirdprinciplewasa senseofdedication.Livein humansocietytheymust;what sortofhumansocietytheywere toliveindependedinparton themanddependedonthem now.Theycouldnotescape that.Butiftheyacceptedtheresponsibilityitimposedonthem asCatholics,asChristians,they mustbe,inonewayoranother, apostles.Andtherewasno apostolatewithoutChrist."For metoliveisChrist,"saidPaul, andatrueCatholiclife,inany sphereofhumanactivity,was impossiblewithoututterfidelity toChrist,withoutthewillto serveHimasHedeserves.To beinanywayanapostle,to witnessfortheTruth,theymust beatalltimesfaithfultoHim. CatholicdoctrinestatesthattheBooks'oftheBible havebeenwrittenbymenundertheguidanceoftheHoly Spirit,sothatthethingstheywrotearethethoughtsGod wishedthemtopresenttous,asHisthoughtsandHismessage.TheeffectofInspiration,then,isthatGodisthe AuthorofHolyScripture,andtheBibleistheWordofGod. Godistheprincipalcause,andtheinspiredwriterisHis instrument.Hemaynot,probablydidnot,havetheremotestideathatGod(vasinspiringhim.Hehastowork forhisinformationlikeanyotherwriter,andhismaterials maybeallacquiredbypurelyhumanmeans.Thatis,he mayreceivenorevelationwhatsoever.Itis,however,in thetreepickingandchoosingofhisinformationthatheis diivnelyguarded.ItisinthisDivineilluminationofthe writer'sjudgementthatInspirationconsists.Itdiffers fromRevelationandfromInfallibility.Revelationcannot beappliedtoalltheBible,becauseitisnotallDivinelyrevealed.NeithercanInfallibility,becausethisonlyguaranteedthetruthofdoctrinesoffaithormorals,whereas everythingintheBibleistrue.

ThougheverythingintheBibleistrue,itis'notnecessarilytrueinthesamesense.Thesameappliestoevery branchofliterature.Therearevariousformsofspeechin use,suchasmetaphor,parable,fable,proverbs,poetry. drama,aswellashistoricalcomposition.Itisimmaterial tothesublimelessonsconveyedby"Othello,"forinstance. whethersuchapersonas"theMoorofVenice"everactuallyexisted.Yetitcontainsdidactictruth,thoughnothistoricallytrue.So,too,withtheProdigalSonintheparable,andwithJobinthatdramaticwork.Thisdistinction appliestoalltheBilbe.Godusedthehumanwriterwith hismethodsofliteraryexpressionasameansofcommunicatingtousHismessage.WhenwesaythatallScriptureistrue,wehavetoexaminetheparticularformofliteraryexpressionthatisbeingemployedbeforewecan judgewhetheritishistoricordidactictruththatisbeing taught.

Butperhapstherearehistoricerrorsinthepartsofthe Biblethatareconfessedlyhistoricalrecords?Notallthe researchoffriendorfoehasbeenabletofindonehistorical errorintheBible.Onthecontrary,theresearchwork, sofarasithasproceeded.hassubstantiatedthetrutheven inminutedetailsoftheBiblenarrative.TheNewTestamentgivesthebestopportunityforcomparisonwithcontemporaryhistory.Yetinspiteof150yearsofuntiring investigation,notasinglehistoricalerrorhaseverbeen proved.Itisadvisable,therefore,tobeonone'sguard againstacceptingboldstatementsabouterrorsintheBible whichareconstantlytobetracedtorationalisticoratheisticwriters,andw-hichhavenofoundationinfact.

LONDON,March23-About45,000people havelistenedtotheRev.PatrickPeyton,C.S.C., U.SFamilyRosarycrusader,duringhisLenten FamilyRosaryCrusadeintheLancasterdiocese,it wasestimatedhere.Thecrusadeendedwith 5,000peopleattendingtwosimultaneous,packed meetingsinBlackpool-oneintheOperahouse andanemergencyoverflowmeetinginthenearbyWintergardens.

FatherPeytonwasliterally mobbedbyhundredsofenthusiastsliningtheroadsoutside. Hewasgreetedwiththesame enthusiasticdemonstrationlater whenhearrivedattheSacred HeartchurchforthefinalBenediction.

Onleavingforafewdaysfor Irelandbeforereturningtothe UnitedStates,FatherPeyton saidthat,inresponsetoinvitationsbyotherBishops,hewill returntoEnglandlaterthisyear orearlynextyear.Nowhere

hadhemetwithmoreenthusiasm,hesaid. Firstreportsshowedthathundredsoffamiliesthroughoutthe diocesehadalreadybegunto saythedailyfamilyRosary.

Inthiscaseithasbeenthe democracieswhichhavetriedto forceFranco'sGovernmentto adoptchangesofpolicywhich weredefinitelyagainsttheconscienceofapeopleendeavouringwithallitsmighttosolve themanyproblemsofourcomplicatedmodernlife.Fortunatelytheworldbeginstorealise thatthestatementofGeneral FrancotoAustralianpressmen sometimeagowerenotsimply words."Oursystem,"hesaid, "containsallthegoodthatis foundindemocracy,"andsomethingelse."ItsuitsSpain,"he hasaddedlately,"andhurtsnobody."

Thosewhospeaklikethatdo notknowthepurityofFranco's Catholicity.TheGeneralissimo, wearetold,feelshappierand proudertobeabletocallhimselftheleastoftheservantsof theChurch,thantohavebecometheleaderofagreat,his-toricnation.Spainhasfound thewaytoaperfectunderstandingbetweentheChurch andStatepowers,suchashas neverbeenknownbefore.

ThepresentSpanishregime iscertainlyconnectedinmany wayswiththenameofPrimo deRivera,mainlythroughthe gloriousmartyrofthemovement,JoseAntonio,sonofthe unfortunate"Dictator"ofthat name.Buttosaythat"the presentgovernmentissimplyan old-fashioneddictatorshipofthe sametypeasthatofPrimode Rivera,"soundsverydogmatic. Indeed,inthemonotonyofour massproductiondays,weare ledtothinkthateverythingis somuchlikesomethingelse, becauseweinstinctivelyapply the"mouldandcast"processto humanbeingsandtheiractivities.Inrealitytherearenot twohumanbeingsalikein themselvesorintheiractions, evenwhenthesysteminitsprocesshassucceededtoagreat extentindehumanisingtheman himself.

Franco's'militarism"has serveddemocracymorethanwe canrealise.Whatwouldhave beentheouctomeofWorldWar II.ifFrancohadnothadthe determinationofastrongarmy behindhimtobacktheargumentshemusthaveusedinhis privateduelwithHitlerduringthelongforgotteninterviewon theFrenchsideofthePyrenees!

AskedlaterwhetherHitler wouldinvadeSpain,Franco simplyreplied:"Militarily speakinghemust."Forthe firsttimetheconquerorofEuropefeltstrongly'aninferiority complex,whichmusthave deeplyaffectedhismorale. Evennow,isnotperhaps Spain'sopenwaragainstCommunismapowerfulcheckon thewell-knownsubversiveelementsabundantinmostEuropeancountries?
