Wheneveramajorcalamity hitsthisglobe,Ihavelearned toexpectanoutburstfromsome oneaboutGod'sgoodnessor mercy.Thepresentcomplaint isfrom"Disappointed,"ofMelville.Hereitis:

"Whatloveorjusticecan therebeinaCreatorwhowipes outwholevillageswithout warningbyavalanchesor eruptingvolcanoes?"

A.:Ishouldlikeverymuch toknowifpeoplewhomake thiscomplaintimaginethateach andeverycalamitythatbefalls usisthedirectactionofGod wantingtocausedestruction, sufferingandlossoflife.Of courseGodcould,ifHesowished, actthatway.Butwehave noevidencethatanyonesuch disasterisanewandimmediateactofthewillofGod.There arecaseswherewecanbe prettycertainthatGoddideffectdisastersinordertopunish orbringtorepentanceanerringpeople.Such, forexample, weretheFloodandthedestructionofthecitiesoftheplain. Butforthemostpartwecannot, forwantofsufficientevidence, explainalldisastersthus.

Wemustallowforsecondary causeswhichGodpermitsbut doesnotdirectlywill.

Ofcourse,youmayask,if Goddoespermitthesethings, whydoesHe,ifHeisgood,allowperfectlyinnocentpeople tosufferso?Well,whatdoyou expectGodtodo?Arrange forvolcanoestoeruptonly where)peopledonotdwell?If

Hehastoshelterthemwith thisprecision,oughtHenot equallyprotectthemfromall otherillsthatcometheirway? ShouldHenot,forinstance, putthefireoutbeforethebaby fallsintoit?Thefactthatpeoplearepoororinnocentdoesaffecttheproblem,whichis, "WhydoesGodpermitevilin theworldatall?"Tothat question,tobeperfectlyfrank, thereisnoneatcomprehensive answerthatatonceclearsaway alldifficulties.Theproblemof evilisamysterywhichwedo notfullyunderstand.Itinvolvessomanyproblemsand apparentcontradictionsthatthe puzzledhumanmindcanseeno wayoutofthemaze.Infact, withoutfaiththeproblemis whollyinexplicable.Butthis muchiscertain.Thepresence ofevildoesnotprovethatGod isnotgood.Nordoessudden humansufferingpAveHim unjust.Thoseinnocentpeople whodiedintheNewGuinea disaster,whichwastheoccasion forthisletter,theyknowthe goodnessandjusticeofGod,and ifbytheirlivestheymeritedit, theyareenjoyinganeternityof happinesswhichnocrueltyof mancantakefromthem.If theyareaskednowwhether theyfelttheyweretreatedunjustly,andwhethertheywould liketocomebacktothislife again,theywouldanswera thousandtimes"No."Theyare thebestjudges;andsoshallwe be,oneday,whenbyGod's grace,weareabletoseethe wholeofHisplanforus.

InspirationoftheBibleNeedsToBe ClearlyUnderstoodAsToFormalError

Aletterfrom"Puzzled."of Como.Hewrites:

"IaccepttheBibleasthe wordofGod,butthereare manythingsinitwhichpuzzle me."

A.:Itakethattomeanthat youaccepttheinspirationofthe Bibleinthesenseinwhichwe Catholicsunderstandthatword. Itisnecessary,nowadays,toinsistontheprecisesensewhich onegivestotheword"Inspiration."VerybrieflytheCatholicposition,whichIthinkis alsothetraditionalProtestant one,isthis:InvirtueofinspirationGodistheprimary authorofHolyScripture.The humanwriterisGod'sinstrument,thoughheretainsfulluse ofhisintellectandwill.Al mightyGodsomovesthewriter'sintellectandwillastoproducetheworkHedesiresto havewritten.Fromthefact thattheprincipalauthorof HolyWritisGodHimself,who canneitherdeceivenorbedeceived,itfollowsatoncethat whatiswrittenunderinspirationcannotcontainformal error.Itisperhapsbetterto state doctrineinthisnegativeandrathertechnicalway, inordertomakeitasprecise

aspossibleinviewofthemany objectionsraisedagainstthe doctrineinourtimes.

Byformalerrorismeant errorinthemeaningofthe words,themeaningwhichthey areseeninthemselvestocontain,whenfullallowancehas beenmadefortextandcontext andallothercircumstances.It mustbeallowed,however,that Godasprincipalauthormay haveinspiredasentencewhich wasonlyimperfectlyunderstoodbythehumanauthor,who indeedmustoftenhavefailed topenetratefullythemindof God.Astrikingexampleof thisistobefoundinJohnXI, 50,wherewearetoldthat

Caiphasspokeprophetically whenhesaid:"Itisexpedient thatonemanshoulddieforthe people."Itis, ofcourse, clear atoncethatCaiphasdidnot fullyunderstandwhathewas saying.

WhatIamdrivingatisthat ifyouaccepttheBibleasthe WordofGod,thenyoumust admitthattherecanbenoerror intheBible,nor,ofcourse,can therebeanycontradictionbetweendifferentpartsofthe Bible.Ifonetextseemstous tocontradictanother,thenwe canbesurethatwehavenot understoodthetruemeaningof oneorotherorperhapsbothof thetexts.Toreturntoyour letter.Youwritefurther:

A.:Inotherwords,itseems toyou,asithasseemedto others,thattherearecertain minordetailsinwhichthefour evangelistsseemtocontradict oneanother.However,inspite oftheseseemingcontradictions, yourealisethattheyalltestify tothefactthatChristdidrise fromthedead.Thatis,of course,thereallyimportant point.IfChristrosefromthe dead,thenHeisGodinexactlythesamesenseinwhichthe FatherinHeavenisGod.Once youacceptthatfact,asyoudo acceptit,thenyouarewellon yourwaytothesolutionofall yourproblems,includingthis veryminoroneoftheseeming oppositionbetweenthedifferent accountsoftheResurrection.If ChristisGod,theneverything thatHesaidisnecessarilytrue andeverythingthatHeforetold mustcometopass.Fromthe Gospels,takeninthefirstinstance,asreliablehistorical documents,whichtheyundoubtlyare,youcanlearnagreat dealofwhatChristdidsaythoughbynomeanseverything thatHesaidanddid-asthe Scripturesthemselvesassureus. A.:Noitisnotstrictlynecessary.Inpointoffactthereisno realcontradictionbetweenthe differentaccounts.Somewho wereanxioustodisprovethe realityoftheResurrectionhave greatlyexaggeratedthedifficultyofharmonisingthefour accounts.Mostofthedifficulties disappearatonceifyourememberthatwhileeverything thateachoftheevangeliststells istrue,noneofthemsetsoutto giveacompleteaccountofall thehappeningsonthatmorning, YoucanseewhatImeanifyou takeoneoftheinstancesthatis usuallyproposedasadiscrepancy,namelythenamesofthe womenwhowenttothetomb. ProblemofFamily

TreeofHolyFamily

WhydoesSt.Matthewgive St.Joseph'sfamilytreeinstead ofOurLady?

A.:St.Matthew,whowrote ofcourseprimarilyfortheJews, seemstohavehadinmindto givetheproofthatlegallyOur LordwasinfacttheSonof David.Descent, fortheJews, wastracedinthemaleline. AlsoSt.Josephwasthelegal fatherofChrist.Henceitwould haveseemedquitenaturaltoSt. Matthewtogivehisgenealogy inordertotraceChrist'slineof descentfromDavid.Youremark that haveOurLady'sfamilywould beenofgreaterinterest. Thatisquitetruebutitisalso truethattheScripturesseemto befrequentlysilentwhereour curiousitywouldwishthemto givethegreatestdetail. There probablyisadeepreasonfor thissilence.

Nextquestion:

WhenIwasachildIwastold thatSt.JosephwasOurLady's cousin.Isthereanythingin Traditionorsomewhereelseto supportthisstatement?

A.:Wellthereisthis,that commentatorsprettygenerally arguefromwhatthescriptures sayofChristastheSonof David,accordingtotheflesh,to theDavidicdescentofMary, sothatbothMaryandJoseph wouldatleasthavebeenofthe sametribe,arelationshipwhich couldbedescribedasakindof cousinship.Individualcommentatorshaveconstructedinge- niousargumentsfrom"thecomparisonbetweenthegenealogy ofChristasgiveninSt.MatthewwiththatgiveninSt. Luke.TheythinkthatMaryand Josephhadacommonancestor notveryfarback.Theydisagree aboutthedetails..Thefactof thematteristhattheknerwn factsaboutthefamiliesbothof MaryandofJosepharevery meagreindeed.
