St.Patrick'sDay,1951,hascomeandgonebutthevisionofthis memorabledaywillremain,longandlovingly,totheestimated10,000 men,womenandchildrenwhogatheredontheRoyalShowgrounds,Claremont,towitnessortakepartintheinspiringcelebrationoftheFeastDayof Ireland'sNationalApostle.Itwastrulyawonderfulday,and,indeed,a veryfittingtributetothememoryoftheSaintwhobroughtthelightof faithtoourforefathers.
ThecelebrationswereusheredinwithSolemnHighMass, atwhichHisGracetheArchbishoppresided,assistedby MonsignoriKennedy,Moss,and McMahon.Thereisnomore expressivewaytoindicatethe unityofthesonsanddaughters ofSt.Patrickinthebondofa commonfaiththanthroughthe SacrificeoftheMass.
Achoirof90boysfromthe St.Louiscollege,Claremont,
thers,Mr.J.S.Roe,SirJames LeeSteere,SirJamesMitchell. TheoccasionbeingSt.Patrick's DaystresswasplacedonIreland'scontributiontotheWest -PatrickHannan,C.Y.O'Connon,SirWinthropHackett. Duerecognitionwasgiven toIrish-Australiansmothers, throughwhoseself-sacrificing, enduringlovetheexpansionof theChurchwasmadepossible. Thegreatspiritualandeduca-
bratedthisyear.InthisconnectiontheCatholicidealfor theCommonwealthwasquoted:
"Tobuildanationtrulygreat, WithChristforKing,where lovenothate ShallbethecharteroftheState Toallmankind."
ArchbishopPrendivillewas congratulatedonhisimplementationofthischarter-particularlybyhissympatheticattitudeto,andsolicitudefor,New Australians,andbyhisunceasingcarefortheever-increasing wealthofthenation-thelittle children.

ThePageantofLifeinW.A. concludedwithatableau,which wasspirituallyandpolitically significant.ARosarywasformedbychildrencladinthedominatingcoloursofgoldandblue, thusdenotingthewattleofAustraliaandtheblueofMaryImmaculate,towhomtheyare consecratedbytheirfaithand religiouseducation.
InthecentreoftheRosary stoodtheAngelofProgress anditisthusunderthepatronageofOurLadyoftheMost HolyRosarythattheCommonwealthofAustraliawilladvancetothatperfection,decreed foritunderitshistorictitleof "TerraAustralisdeSpiritu Sancto."
Intheafternoonaoextensive inter-schoolsportsprogramme wasconducted.Despitethe oppressiveheat,thecontestants showednosignsof,physicaldistressorlackofemulation. Schoolhonourswereeagerly soughtaftet,thehonoursgo- ingtoAquinascollegeand

Nextweweretreatedtothe greatestspectacleeverpresentedonaSt.Patrick'sDay-a pageantbythepupilsofSt. Brigid'sConvent,WestPerth. Nopencoulddojusticetothis pageant,whichshouldbeseen tobeappreciated.Thecostuming,choiceofcharacters, blendingofcivicandecclesiasticalhistory,andexecution, werefaultless.Itdrewcheers andtearsfromthespellboundspectatorsasitunravellegthepagesofhistory,reenactinginminiaturetheprincipalepisodesinWestAustralianhistorysince1829. Actually,theorphanagewas thoroughlyinvestigatedbyforeigndoctorsandnurseswhen UNRRAaidwasbeingdistributedthroughoutChinafollowingthelastwarandwonunanimouscommendationforits cleanlinessandefficiency.Each childwassuppliedwithitsown bedandmosquitonet,andinfantstheirowncribs.The kitchenisspotlessandimmaculate,asthesereportsbearwitness.Thecompoundis'supplied withtwofresh-waterwells,and withelectricity.

TheRev.J.McKay,parishpriestofCarnarvon,whohasbeentheguestoftheArchbishop duringhisholidayintheSouth,returnedbyboat on'March20.Priortohisdeparture,Father McKayannouncedthathewouldbeinstalling threestained-glasswindowsintheStaroftheSea church,tocommemoratetheHolyYear.
Theinstallationofthewindowsinthenorthsideofthe naveofhischurchhadbeen madepossible,statedFather McKay,bythedirectdonations oftheparishioners.
Thewindows,whichwere beingexecutedbyJohnAshwinandCo.,ofSydney,would cost£300.Ofthisamount £250werealreadyinhand, andthebalancewasguaranteed tobepaidbeforetheceremonialblessingtookplace.
Eachwindowwouldcomprise abottompanel,andwoulddepictoneofthemysteriesofthe Rosary,viz:theIncarnationand theNativity,theAgonyinthe GardenandtheCrucifixion,the ResurrectionandtheAscension.

OftheFeastsofOurLord,thetwomostimportantare thosewhicharecelebratedatEasterandChristmas.In factthewholeliturgicalyeariseitherapreparationfor,or acelebrationof,th4setwogreatmysteries.Forexample. thepreparationforthePaschalperiodextendsthrough threeweeksofSeptuagesima,andfortydaysofLentand Passiontide.ThencomesthegreatFeastitself-the greatestofallfeasts,withitsprivilegedOctave,during whichwecelebratethemostimportantmysteryofour Faith.Forthenextfiveweeksthefaithfulrejoiceinthe presenceoftheRisenSaviour,whocompletesthefounda- tionofHisChurchbeforeHisAscensionintoHeaven.The descentoftheHolyGhostatPentecost,andthe.next24or 28weeks,showsusthefruitsofholinesswhichtheHoly GhostandtheBlessedSacramentcausetodevelopamong soulsasaresultofthatfoundation.

BYestablishingtheMassandinstituting theBlessedEucharist,individualsmayapplytotheirsouls thefruitsofthefirstSacrifice.Thusisthegreatestmysterycelebratedbyanequallysolemncommemoration.

F.orthefinalconcertinthe SummerseriesonSaturday night,theWestAustralianSymphonyorchestra,undertheir residentconductor,RudolfPekarek,turnedonthefinestperformanceofamajorworkthat wehavehadthepleasureof hearingforsomeyears.Itis apleasurewhichfewpeople realisewhenthecriticisableto giveunstintedpraiseofaperformanceinsteadofhavingto qualifyeveryphrasewiththe nigglingconjunction,andthe renditionofDvorak's"New World"SymphonyonSaturday nightisoneofthoserareoccasions.
Itwasnotperfection;inthe introductionofthefirsttheme thewoodwinddidnothangtogether,and,inthesamemovementtheresponseoftheviolins totheconductor'squickening ofpacewastoosluggish,but thesewereveryminorfaultsin anoverallperformanceofgreat beauty,delicacy,andpower.
Outstandingamongtheimpressionsofhighlightsintheperformancewerethevastlyimprovedrhythmicbalanceand toneofthebrasssection-in particulartheFrenchhorn, whichreallyexcelleditself-the finematchingofshadebythe woodwindsection,andthewell-
controlledplayingofallpartsof thestrings.Eventhepercus- sion,whichseldomreceivesa mentioninanycriticalanalysis, reallydeservesonethistimefor perfecttiminginthetympani passages,and,ofcourse,the conductordeservesthegreatest praiseofallforperfectdirection,whichneverallowedany ofthiswell-wornsymphonyto becomedullorcolourless.
Thesecondhalfoftheprogrammedidnotlettheaudiencedown,eventhoughitnever reachedtheheightsofthefirst. "Moldau"wasbeautifullyplayed,withfineshadingsofcolour, andtheloveliestpianissimo playingfromthestringsinthe middlesectionthatIhaveheard fromourorchestra.
Thissensitivequalityfrom thestringswasagainnoticeable intheNocturneandWaltzMelancoliquefromthe"JohnField Suite,"whichwasthethird itemonthesecondhalfofthe programme. Sir Hamilton Hartz'slittlegemwasgivena veryfinerendition,marredonly bydefectivetonefromtheoboe initssolopassageafterthe clarinetatthebeginning.In fairnesstothisinstrument, whichImaybeaccusedofattackingtoooften,Iwouldlike tomentionatthisstageitsfine
playinginothersectionsofthe concert,andparticularlyinthe Symphony.Thecreditforthe bestplayingintheWaltzgoes totheviolins. Theopeningandclosingitems onthesecondhalfoftheprorammewereBizet'sdramatic overture,"LaPatrie,"andthe 'MarcheSlave,"byTchaikowsky.Thefirstisanunsympa-theticworkwhichdidnotrepaythegoodworktheorchestraput'intoit.Thesecondisa piecewhichcallsforabetter balanceofstringsagainstbrass thanwepossess.Unlessthe brasscanbegivenfullreinit losesitspower,butourstrings aretooweaktocompetewith theunleashedpowerofthe "heavyartillery,"andthenet resultisatendencyfortheorchestratosoundrathertoo likeabrassband.
Ihaveleftthesoloisttolast, notbecauseshedeservedno earliermention,butbecauseI feltitwastheorchestra'snight. StrellaWilsongavetwowellcontrastednumbers,inbothof whichsheshowedgreatartistry andfeeling.IfIexpressapreferenceforthesecondnumber, Massenet's"IIestdoux,itest bon,"itisonlybecausethe warmthofthesoloist'svoice seemedtometobebettersuited tothelyricismoftheMassenet ariathantothemorerobust spiritof"Elizabeth'sGreeting." Nevertheless,despitethedemandsoftheWagnerianextract,thevoiceroseclearlyand withoutappreciablestrainover themassedorchestra,andthe applausefromtheaudienceto bothitemswasfullandgenerous. Attheconclusionofaseries itisperhapsopportunetosaya fewwordsofageneralnature. AtanyrateIfeellikesaying them.Thegeneralimpression thisyearhasbeenoneofgradualandsustainedimprovement intheorchestra,andIthink thatallsectionsaretobecongratulated.Themostnoticeablesignofthisimprovement hasbeentheclosingofthegap betweentheconductor'sbeat andtheresponsefromtheorchestra,andwelookforwardto areallyfineyearformusicin WesternAustralia.
