FurtherlaurelswerewonbytheCatholiccollegeswhentheselectionofcadetsfortrainingat theDuntroonMilitarycollege,wasmodeknown lastweek.

ThelargestnumberofWestAustraliansyet selected-nine-includedthreefromCatholiccolleges.Thesewere:P.T.GowansandK.Gurney, oftheChristianBrothers'college,'Adelaideterrace, andP.R.Burns,ofSt.LouisJesuitschool,Claremont.

Mrs.Disbrey,whileabroad, arrangedthephotographofthe WestAustralianpilgrimsatthe Vaticanwhichisherereproduced.

Hermostvividimpression ofthepilgrimagewasLourdes where,shesaid,thedevotional atmospherewasindescribable. Onehadafeelingofbeingin anotherworldasonesawthe devotion&hopeintheeyesof thesick.Althoughshewitnessednocuresshelatersawin Parisaremarkableimprovementina"blue"babywhohad beentakentothepiscina.

Mrs.Disbreyorganisedthe initialmeetingofW.A.pilgrims aboardship.Shehopesto enrolabout40memberswho willmeetonceortwiceayear atachbdinner,wherephotographs&reminiscenceswill keepalivetheunforgettable experiencesofHolyYear1950.

BillO'Gradywasanotherto taketwotitlesthelongjump aridthehopstepandjump. Bill's23'3"forthelongjump and48'4"forthehopstepand jump,arethebestdistancesrecordedinAustraliathisseason intheseevents,sohelookslike takingoffmorethanaState titlethisyear.

KevinSaltwhohasbeen jumpingveryconsistentlythis yearwassecondtoBillO'Grady inboththebroadjumpandthe hopstepandjump.Kevinhas beenimprovingregularlythis yearandsinceheisgoingto trainregularlynextyearourpresentstateChampwill havetolooktohislaurels.

PercyJerrattranhisbestfor theseasontotake3rdplacein thesenior100yds.Hehas shown thisremarkableimprovement year,andhehasplentyof roomformoreimprovement mainlyhisstyle.

Anotherathletetoshowgreat improvementthisseason-is FrankButler.Frankgaineda wellearned3rdplaceinthe 440yds.

InthejunioreventsJohn O'Connellshowedhisgreatversatilityinwinning4titles:the broadjump,hopstepandjump, discusandshotputt,aswellas gaininga3rdplaceinthe100 yds.Johnwasunluckyinthe factthathehadtoscratchfrom the220ydsand440yds,in whicheventshehadeverygood chancesbecausetheywereon atthesametimeastheHop stepandjumpandlongjump respectively.Johnwasrewarded bybreakinghisownjuniorhop stepandjumprecordandsettingthenewdistanceof47'6''.

Therecentindignationarousedamongtheparishioners of,MundaringagainsttheirRoadBoardmembersandsecretaryforattemptingtoobstructthebuildingofaCatholic schoolinthedistrictcentresprimarilyabouttherightsof parentstochoosethetypeofinstructionthey'wishtheir childrentoreceive.Asthisrighthasnotyetfoundaplace intheCharterofRightsdrawnupbytheUnitedNations Organisation,itwillbeusefultorecallCatholicclaimsinits regard.Thenotionisunhappilywidespreadto-day,even inthedemocracies,thatnohumaninterestorconcernis exemptfromtheState'slegislativeauthority.Itisnotindeedanewdoctrine;itisratherarevivalorsurvivalofone whichwasinuniversaleffectbeforethebirthofChrist.It iscalled,simply,tyranny.Inthisfindesieclethemasses arenaturallyattractedbythecatch-cryofsecurity.They arescarcelyawarethatthematerialprosperitywhichis offeredthemisbynomeansanactoflargesse.Ithas stringsattached.Securitymaybehad,butonlyatthe priceofsuppressionofhumanrightsandthedestructionof humandignity.

ThedoctrineofStateabsolutismis,therefore,oneofthe cardinahreasonswhypeacecannotprevail,becausetheviolationofthenaturalsenseofjusticeofwhichallmenare consciousmeansthereversalofrightorderinthetranquillityofwhichpeaceresides.Thisisclearlyevidencedin theattitudeofthecivilpowertowardsmarriage,andhence towardseducation.Asanaturalcontract,marriageis,in itsessential,altogetherbeyondthereachoftheState.In theabsenceofnaturalimpediments,theStatecannothinderitscitizensfrommarrying;itcannotgrantadivorcenor aseparation.Butthecivilauthorityhaspowerovermarriageinitscivileffects.Therightsofparentsovertheir childrenspringdirectlyfromthemarriagecontract.Those rights,nothavingbeenconferredbytheState,cannotbe abrogatedbyit.Theyareinherentintheverycondition ofparenthood.Andsince,historically,theyprecededState rights,theStateistheservant,notthemaster,ofthefamily. Hencetheschool,whichistrulyanextensionof,anallyof, butnotasubstitutef/Dr,thehomeconcernstheStateonlyin itscivileffects.

TheStatemaybuildandfinanceschoolsandteachers' trainingcolleges;itmayinspectthestandardofwork achieved;itmaydemandastipulatedlevelofproficiency, andcompelparentstodischargetheireducationalduties. Butitdoesnottherebyacquiretherightswhichnaturally belongetoparents.Itassumesobligationstochildren,not assuch,butastofuturecitizens.Onceparentsarewilling andabletodischargetheirresponsibilities.therightofinterventioncollapses.InpracticetheStatehassetupitsown systemofschoolstowhichallcitizensmustcontributefinancially,inwhicheducationtoacertainstandardiscompulsoryandwhichare"secular"inorientation.Thislatter qualityisindistinguishablefrompaganism,andbecauseof itCatholicscannotiuconsciencehavetheirchildreneducatedinsuchanatmosphere.Bypayingasecondtime, theyhavebuiltandmaintainedtheirowneducationalsystemforthepast60yearswithconspicuoussuccess.Itis notalittlehumorousthatacountryRoadBoardnowproposestohaltthatprocessandtodenyparentstheirinalienablerights.

OnSunday,Feb.11,theN.C.G.M.heldaonedayconferenceforitsmembersattheConventof Mercy,VictoriaSquare.Inspiteoftryingweather,over80girlsattended.Theyweremainly frommetropolitanbranches,butthecountrybranchesofKalgoorlieandNorthamwerealsorepresented.

Themorningsessionwas openedbytheDiocesanpresident(MargaretCollopy),who welcomedthegirlsandintroducedthefirstspeaker(Peg O'Neill).Inaverygoodtalk, Pegexplainedtheorganisation ofCatholicActionandthespecialisedmovementofthe N.C.G.M.inparticular,

TheDiocesanChaplainofthe movement,Rev.E.Sullivan, D.D.,gaveaclearexplanationof theforthcomingcampaignfor 1951,on"PreparationforMarriage."Healsospokeonthe subjectoftrainingandthe necessityofbranchesmakingthe fullestpossibleuseofthe N.C.G.M. hostel, "Marian Lodge,"fortrainingweek-end3.

'VoiceofIreland'ProgrammeinNovel MysteryFarewellPerformance

FromStations6PR-TZ-CI,onSundaynight, Feb.18,at10p.m.,willbeheardahalf-hourprogrammeofIrishsongandmusic,presentedbya selectgroupofhighclassentertainers.

Toenhancetheentertainment valueofthisprogramme,andto providesomevariety,listeners areinvitedtoparticipateina "send-off"toanartistwhois leavingPerthsoontocontinue hermusicalstudiesattheMelbourneConservatorium.

Theauthorcautionsthat,becauseoforiginalsin,man'sreligiouscapacityhasbeendisordered,andcanpursuea courseoferrorunlessguided bytheChurch'andaidedbythe graceofGod.Heremarksthat thishasoccurredinseveral placesthroughouttheworldrecently,with"deplorabledisobedienceoftheecclesiastical authoritywhichtriedtorestrainit."

Theproject,begunin1934 undertheleadershipofMsgr.L. G,Ligutti,executivedirectorof theNationalCatholicRuralLife conference,wasdesignedtoprovidelow-incomefamiliesof minerswithhomesandfive-acre plotsofland.Thecelebration heldrecentlymarkedtheend oftheco-operativewhichwas formedin1942totakeoverthe property,originallyfiancedby theFederalGovernment.Only eightofthefamilyunitsstillare indebt.

Induetimehewasordained apriestandentereduponalife ofsevereasceticism.Eventhe seclusionaffordedbyhiscellin themonasterydidnotsatisfyhis spirituallongings,andheobtainedpermissionfromhissuperiorstoretireasahermit. Thismeantthathewould henceforthbesecludedfromthe companionshipofeventheother monks.

Afterseveretrials,thepermissionwasgranted.Dedicating himselfformanyyearstocompleterenunciationandalifeof prayer,penance,andcontemplation,FatherSharbeldiedaholy deathin1898.Hewasburied bythemonksaccordingtothe regulationsoftheOrder.
