ThedoctrineofStateabsolutismis,therefore,oneofthe cardinahreasonswhypeacecannotprevail,becausetheviolationofthenaturalsenseofjusticeofwhichallmenare consciousmeansthereversalofrightorderinthetranquillityofwhichpeaceresides.Thisisclearlyevidencedin theattitudeofthecivilpowertowardsmarriage,andhence towardseducation.Asanaturalcontract,marriageis,in itsessential,altogetherbeyondthereachoftheState.In theabsenceofnaturalimpediments,theStatecannothinderitscitizensfrommarrying;itcannotgrantadivorcenor aseparation.Butthecivilauthorityhaspowerovermarriageinitscivileffects.Therightsofparentsovertheir childrenspringdirectlyfromthemarriagecontract.Those rights,nothavingbeenconferredbytheState,cannotbe abrogatedbyit.Theyareinherentintheverycondition ofparenthood.Andsince,historically,theyprecededState rights,theStateistheservant,notthemaster,ofthefamily. Hencetheschool,whichistrulyanextensionof,anallyof, butnotasubstitutef/Dr,thehomeconcernstheStateonlyin itscivileffects.
TheStatemaybuildandfinanceschoolsandteachers' trainingcolleges;itmayinspectthestandardofwork achieved;itmaydemandastipulatedlevelofproficiency, andcompelparentstodischargetheireducationalduties. Butitdoesnottherebyacquiretherightswhichnaturally belongetoparents.Itassumesobligationstochildren,not assuch,butastofuturecitizens.Onceparentsarewilling andabletodischargetheirresponsibilities.therightofinterventioncollapses.InpracticetheStatehassetupitsown systemofschoolstowhichallcitizensmustcontributefinancially,inwhicheducationtoacertainstandardiscompulsoryandwhichare"secular"inorientation.Thislatter qualityisindistinguishablefrompaganism,andbecauseof itCatholicscannotiuconsciencehavetheirchildreneducatedinsuchanatmosphere.Bypayingasecondtime, theyhavebuiltandmaintainedtheirowneducationalsystemforthepast60yearswithconspicuoussuccess.Itis notalittlehumorousthatacountryRoadBoardnowproposestohaltthatprocessandtodenyparentstheirinalienablerights.

Inhissummingupoftheconference,Dr.Sullivansaidthat heconsideredthatthemovementwasmakingsteadyprogress.Hesaidthegeneral members,judgingfromthefindingsofdiscussiongroups,could befurtherenlightenedastoa moreactivepartthattheycould playinthemovementthrough teamsofinfluenceandsubleaders'groups.

TheinterventionoftheCatholicprelateendedastrikewhich hadlastedmorethansixweeks. Variousconferencesbetweenthe C.I.E.andtheofficialsofthe IrishTransportandGeneral Workers'union,ofwhichC.I.E. isamember,failedtobringan agreementovertheproposalfor increasedwages.
Aconferencecalledbythe LordMayorofLondonandattendedbythemayorsofseveral provincialtowns,andbyrepresentativesoftheC.I.E.and I.T.G.W.U.,endedinadeadlock.
TheArchbishopthenentered thepicturebycallingappropriaterepresentativesofallgroups concernedtomeetwithhimand thepresidentoftheparent union.

TheSistersarefoundtobe verycleanintheirwork,butat thesametime,eventhemost menialtasksdonotbotherthem. Theyactthesametothehighestrankingofficerandthelowestgradeprivate.
TheSistersarefromfourOrders:TheCarmelites,theSt. PauldeChartresSisters,the HolyFamilySisters,andthe PerpetualHelpSisters.The PerpetualHelpSistersarerefugeesfromPyongyang,inNorth Korea.
TheSistershaveabout50patientsandabouttendoctorsand nursesunderinstructionforbaptism.
Recently,onaninspectiontour oftheKoreanarmyhospitals, theRev.GeorgeCarroll,Mary knollchaplainwiththe8th. UnitedStatesarmy,obtained permissionfromthedirectorsof thehospitalsforaKoreanpriest toliveateachofthefourbig hospitalsasaresidentchaplain. ItwasonthistouroftheKoreanarmyhospitalsthatthedi rectorsspokeinglowingterms oftheworkoftheSisters,and allofthemaskedformoreSisters.About50Sistersareworkinginthehospitalsatpresent.

Thefront-pagearticlewas notanofficialactofanyorgan oftheHolySee,butanexhortationandinstruction,entitled, "Christians,BeMorePrudent." Itwasdirectedtotherankand fileofChurchmembers.Itput themonguardagainstincreasinglynumerousrecurrencesof purportedlysupernaturalevents, whichhavebeendisturbingthe faithfulofVariouscountriesin recentyears.
Theauthorcautionsthat,becauseoforiginalsin,man'sreligiouscapacityhasbeendisordered,andcanpursuea courseoferrorunlessguided bytheChurch'andaidedbythe graceofGod.Heremarksthat thishasoccurredinseveral placesthroughouttheworldrecently,with"deplorabledisobedienceoftheecclesiastical authoritywhichtriedtorestrainit."

Thelad,however,bravelyacceptedtheconsequencesofhis rashness,andwenttoaschool fortheblind.Hefoundthe methodsofteachingtheblindto readwereterriblyslowand cumbersome.Thepupilswere supposedtolearnbytouchfrom letterscutoutofwoodandraised.Someweretwoincheshigh andtwoincheswide.
Louiswasnotatallsatisfied withthismethod.Hetoldhis fatherthatallblindpeoplecould everhopetoenjoywerebooks andthatthereshouldbeaneasy andsimplerwayevolvedby whichtheycouldbetaught.He alsoaddedthathemeantto spendhislifeworkingoutthis easiermethod,bothforhimselfandforhisfellowsufferers.
Foralongtimehetried,but everymethodhethoughtofwas notsatisfactoryandhadtobe discarded.Then,quite,by chance,heheardthataFrench armyofficerhaddiscovereda wayofusingraiseddotsand dashesasameansofwritten communicationtobeusedin darkness.
ImmediatelyLouiswentand metthisofficer,aCaptainCharlesBarber.CaptainBarberbecameveryinterestedinthepoor blindlad,whowassokeento helphiscomradesindistress, andexplainedhissystem,saying thathehadonlyintendeditas anarmycode.Asanexample, hesaidthatonedotmightmean "advance,"andadash"retreat." Buthethoughtitwaspossibleto deviseacodecoveringthewhole language.

Brailleknewnorestuntilhe hadplannedaperfectsystemof raiseddotsanddashes,andpublishedhisfirstbookforthe blind.Andamostinteresting factwasthatthetoolheusedto maketheseraisedsymbolswas anawl.
ThusBraillereallydidgive eyestotheblind.Itseemed thatGodwishedhimtobearhis crossofblindnesssothathe wouldhavethewholehearted desiretohelpthosewhosufferedinthewayhedid.Atall eventshissystemhasbecome universallyaccepted,andhehas beenhonouredasoneofthe reallygreatmenwhohavehelpedtheirfellows.OnceIread ofsomeyoungblindSpaniards whomadethejourneytoParis andcametothestatueerected toLouisBraille.Herethey kneltandthankedGodforgivingtotheworldsuchagreat andnobleman.

AbdallaSharbelwasbornina littlevillagehighonMountLebanon,neartheCedars.He spenthisearlyyearsasashepherd.Hispietywasremarkableatanaarlyage.Itappearsthathisveryoccupation gavehimtheleisureandtheatmospheretocultivateaspiritof prayerandcontemplation.As ayoungmanhedecidedtoenter amonasteryconductedbythe monksofSt.AnthonytheGreat.
Induetimehewasordained apriestandentereduponalife ofsevereasceticism.Eventhe seclusionaffordedbyhiscellin themonasterydidnotsatisfyhis spirituallongings,andheobtainedpermissionfromhissuperiorstoretireasahermit. Thismeantthathewould henceforthbesecludedfromthe companionshipofeventheother monks.
Afterseveretrials,thepermissionwasgranted.Dedicating himselfformanyyearstocompleterenunciationandalifeof prayer,penance,andcontemplation,FatherSharbeldiedaholy deathin1898.Hewasburied bythemonksaccordingtothe regulationsoftheOrder.

FatherYounestookprecautionsagainstthepossibilityof fraudbycallingintheproper ecclesiasticalauthorities,civil officials,andthebestmedical men.Thecasewasjudgedto bebeyondscientificexplanation. WhenFatherYounescovered thefaceofFatherSharbel'sremainswithanamice,hefound theimageofthedeceasedmonk imprintedonthelinen,aswas theFaceofChristontheveilof Veronica.

RatherIshallendeavourto makeupforsomeofmyearlier lackofkindnessbypayingatributetotheorchestraasawhole andtotheleaderandthefist clarinetinparticular.
