ItwascalledtheInterval clubbecauseactorscouldslip intoitintheintervalsbetween rehearsalsorbetweenmatinee andeveningperformances.It wastobeaplacewherethey couldfindrest,comfortand companionship,iftheywere strangerstotown,aswellas goodbutcheapmeals.

PartofabeautifuloldGeorgianhouseinDeanstreet, whichisinthemidstofLondon'sWestEndtheatrequarter, wasadaptedforthepurpose: Diningrooms,restandother roomsfurnishedand,aboveall, ahomelikeandfriendlyatmospherecreated.Theclubnot onlyaimsatlookingafterthe bodilywell-beingofplayers, especiallybeginnersmaking theirfirststepsintheprofes-

tinytheatreinwhichtheycan rehearse.Itfitsthemoutwith anycostumesthyneedfor theirparts.fromitswardrobe, andtheclubisalwaysahome forthemwhentheyare"resting,"thatisoutofwork. Allthisworkhasbeengoing onquietlyandsometimes againstoddsfornearly25years, Thevalueoftheworkwasrecognizedbytillecclesiastical authorities,whorecommended Mrs.BalvairdHewettforthe Papalcross;itarrivedthreedays afterherdeath.Herdaughter, Mollie,whoactedasherrighthand,hascarriedontheclub initsfriendly,homelike,Christiantraditioneversince,and herdevotedworkwasadditionallyrewardedbythehostof playerswhomtheClubhad helped,crowdingitslittletheatretocelebratewithherthe honorthattheHolyFatherhad bestowed.

ROME,Jan.19.-HisEminenceEugeneCardinalTisserant,newDeanoftheSacred CollegeofCardinals,wasActing DeanoftheSacredCollege duringthetimeofthefailing healthofCardinalFrancesco Marchetti-Selvaggiani.whomhe succeededasDeanwhenthe latterdied. The66-year-oldSecretaryof theSacredCongregationforthe OrientalChurchisanoted Orientalscholar,ofwhomPope PiusXIsaidin1932,whenthe thenMonsignorTisserantcelebratedhis25thordinationjubilee:"Anexemplarypriest,a savantamongtheelite."

TheCardinal'slinguisticabilitiesareshownbythefactthat herecitestheRosaryinoneof

RaymondLambert'sreputation asanaccompanisttogreatartists,fromClareButtandFlorenceAustraltoMarjorieLawrenceandJoanHammond,is matchedbyhisstandingasa concertpianist.

Bornintoamusicalenvironment-hisfather,thelate EdouardLambert,wasaconcert-masterofleadingorchestrasinBelgium,andlaterleader oftheMelbourneSymphonyorchestra;hismotheranoperatic singer-itwasnaturalthatRaymondLambertshouldhavebecomeamusician.

Aftergraduatingfromthe BrusselsConservatoriumand takingfurtherstudywiththe famousconcertpianistand teacher,ArthurdeGreef,RaymondLambertappearedwith hisfatherinsonatarecitalsin Belgiumandelsewhereonthe Continent.Whenhisfamily leftforAustraliaheaccompaniedthemandsettledinMelbourne.Hehasremainedthere eversince,withtheexceptionof onevisittoEuropeforarefresherstudy.Australia,where hehaslivedforsolong,and wherehischildrenwereborn, isnowhispermanenthome,and hehasbeenformanyyearsnow partofthemusicallifecfthis country.

RaymondLambertisanallroundmusician.Apartfrom hisconcertandbroadcasting careerasarecitalist,concertosoloist,sonata-playerandaccompanist,hehasbeenformany yearschiefstudyteacheratthe MelbourneUniversityconservatorium.

Inspiteofhisbusylife,playingandteaching,Mr.Lambert alsomakestimetostudynew works,andhasbeenresponsible forintroducingtotheAustralian publicmanyimportantcontemporarycompositions,notablythe

Prokofieffconcerto,andthede Greefconcerto,writtenbyhis formerBelgiummaster. RaymondLambertwillappear withtheWestAustralianSymphonyorchestra,conductedby EugeneGoosens,attheState JubileeconcertintheCapitol theatre,Feb.6. Thisconcert hasbeenarrangedbythe A.B.C.onbehalfoftheState GovernmentastheState'sofficialcelebrationofAustralia's culturaladvancementinthelast century.

Inaninspiringaddress,the Archbishopsaidhewasdelightedtobewiththepeopleof Scarboroughtoblesstheextensionswhichweresourgently needed.Herecalledthathe saidMassinScarborough20 yearsagoduringtheholiday season.Therewereonlyafew residentCatholicstherethen. Howithadgrowncouldbe gaugedbythefactthatthecommodiousschool-hallwasfilledat bothMasseseverySunday,and therewere130childreninthe school.

HecongratulatedFatherMcBride,andthankedhimforhis mostunselfishandefficientwork. Itdemandedcouragetoundertakebuildingoperationsthese days.Thecostofthenew buildingwasveryreasonable, consideringthefantasticcosts prevailingto-day.Thenew class-roomswerecommodious, welllightedandventilated,and wouldsatisfytheexactingdemandsofeducationalrequirements.FatherMcBridehad metwithmanydifficultiesinobtainingthepermit,andthedifficultiesincidentaltobuilding operationsthesedays.Buthe hadsurmountedthemmostsatisfactorily.

CatholicSchoolsEffect

AnEnormousEconomy

HisGracecongratulatedthe peopleofScarborough.They hadundertakenalargeliability, buttheydidsoforaprinciple: thattheymighthavetheirchildreneducatedintheproperreligiousatmosphere.Therewere 15,000childreninCatholic schoolsintheState.Thelast publishedestimateshowedthat thecostperchildinState schoolstotheGovernmentwas £226s.Catholicswereeffectingaannualeconomytothe Governmentinthevicinityof £335,000.Andinadditionthey werecontributingone-fifthof thecostofStateeducation. Thesewerehard,coldfacts.It was,ofcourse,unjust.Butthey' wereconfidentthatAustralian justicewouldeventuallyprevail, and,insteadofbeingpenalised, theCatholiccontributiontoAustralianeducationwouldreceive therecognitionwhichithadso longandsoshamefullybeendenied.

ThesuccessofCatholicschools intheUniversityexaminations werehighlysatisfactory.Of thecandidatespresented,81per cent,intheJuniorand71per cent.intheLeavingexaminationsweresuccessful.Ofthe14 exhibitionsawarded,fivewere captiiredbyCatholicschools; andallthreeCoombescholarshipswerealsowonbyour schools.Hementionedthese

factsinnoboastfulspirit,but rathertoshowthehighstandard ofseculareducationinCatholic schools.

InVirtueandPatriotism

HisGracethankedtheDominicanSisters,whowerebuildingonthefoundationslaidby theSistersofMercy,West Perth.Hepraisedtheworkof theSisters,andappealedtothe parentsforco-operation.With thatco-operationbetweenteachersandparents,St.John's school,Scarborough,wouldsend forthffomitsclass-roomsinthe yearstocomeyoungAustralians fittedineverywaytoundertake theresponsibilitiesoflife.It wouldgivetotheChurchandto theStatewhatbothhadaright toexpect,viz.,faithfulhearts groundedfirmlyinvirtue,piety andpatriotism.Anditwould producecitizenswhonextto GodlovedAustraliasowellthat toserve,tofightfor,andeven todieforAustralia(assomany productsofCatholicschoolshad doneinthetwoworldwars-) wouldbetothematalltimes thegreatestofearthlyhonours.

TheLentof1951couldeasilyheamemorableonefor practisingCatholics,because,inadditiontotheabundant graceswhichthenormaldevotionalpracticesoftheholy seasonensure,theconditionoftheuniversalChurchandof theworldaresuchatthishistoricalmomentastolend themselvesuniquelytoreparativeandintercessoryspiritual activity.LentisapreparatoryperiodforthefittingobservanceofthegreattruthsofChrist'sPassionanddeath, wherebymankind,utterlyestrangedfromGodandimpotent tosaveitself,wasredeemed.Neversomuchasnowdid theworldexperiencetheimperiousneedofaSaviour.Men havesoughtvainlyforsalvationinpolitics,economicexperiments,andculturalabberations.Buttheheartofman drivesdeeperthanthetawdryshowofthebankruptsoul ofourtimescansatisfy.Itisnotalonethatsalvationhas beensoughtfromthewrongpeople;butinthelesserthings manneedsdeliverancefromwantandwarandfear,but mostofallfromsin.

IfeverysyllableoftheChurch'sliturgyremindsus thatChristhaspaid,onceforall,thepriceofsin,itshould alsoshatterourworldlinesstotherealisationthatsinStill hasdominionovermillionsofsoulsmadebyGodforHimself,thatformanyChrist'sawfulredemptivedeathhasbeen. void,andyetthattheCatholicChurchhasinitshandthe meritsofCalvarytoapplytothewoundsoftneworld. Lentisatimeofheart-searching,whenthesinnerswho stilldonotlovesinrenewtheefforttofreethemselvesfrom hell'sshackles.Thatisthelowestcommondenominator ofthespirituallife.Formanyitwillmeansomuchmore. ItwillmeantheintensificationoftheinnerlifeoftheHoly Spirit'sindwelling.Theenormous,salvificmeritsof Christ'sdeathraiseupthetimid,quickentheslothful,fire thetepid,andliftgreatheartstotheheightsofheroism. FortheessenceoftheChurchandoftheeffortsofChristiansisthattheybeholy.OnlyfromthefulnessofChrist cancharityoverflowtothosewhoknowHimnot.

Perhapsthemostprofitablemethodofmeditationfor modernCatholicsduringLentmightbeanexaminationof conscienceonthesinsofomission.Itisundeniablethat theresponsibilitiesoftheCatholicinouragehaveexpandedprodigiouslyevenasagainstthepositionof20yearsago. Thattheforcesofanti-Christhavebecomesofirmlyentrenchedoversomuchoftheearth'ssurfaceinsobriefa spaceisnotentirelyexplainedbytheirownnative(and perhapsdiabolic)ingenuity.Mayitnotbethattheycould comeinatthegatebecauseslothleftitajar?Iftheyscaledtheramparts,wasitbecausethesentriesslept?Ifthe desertshavesuddenlyappeared,wasitthatthegoodbrown earthhadbeenerodedabandonedly? Itwereaboldman whocoulddenythathehadnotleftundonesome.ofthose thingswhichheoughttohavedone.Theworldcannot saveitselfeventhePassionofChristcannotredeem itunlessallweoftheMysticalBody,firedwiththelove ofChrist,helpapplythosedivineresuscitationmethodsto itslifelesscadaver.

Hisplayinglackedcrispness,an essentialinsuchaturgidwork astheSaintSaens'Concerto,but itmustbeadded,infairnessto thesoloist,thatthecomposer hasnotbeenkindtothe.piano, andcanscarcelybesaidtohave madeuseoftherangeoftheorchestraatall.Lamberthadan unenviabletaskinaConcerto whichisnotinherentlyinteresting,butthelackofadefinite rhythmicpatternmadetheconductor'staskoffittinginthe tiddlybitsofaccompaniment difficult.Therewasanunfortunatecontretempsattheend whenonesectionfounditself leftwithafewmorebarsto play.

Thereissomethingengaging aboutfindingthatagreatconductorandmusicianisequipped withasenseofhumour,and Mr.Goossensbaitedthetrap beautifullyafterintervalforthe presentationofhismuch-heralded"JubileeFanfare."The stagesettingwiththebuglers drawnupattherearoftheorchestrainfullregalia,andthe prolongeddelaybeforehisappearanceonthplatform,allbespokeapuckishstreakone wouldneverhaveexpected.

RobertHughes,whose"FestivalOverture"haditsfirstairinginPerth,isaMelbourne composer,whoisheadedfora brilliantcareer.Thiscompositionwasoriginallywrittenfor theproposedRoyalvisitin1949, andwonfirstprizeinacompeti- tionrunbytheA.B.C.atthat time.Itisaveryfinepieceof work,revealingagooddealof influencefromcontemporary Englishmusic,andmadeextremelygoodlistening.

Theastonishingimprovement intheplayingo'fourorchestra, andareallygrandexhibitionof sensitive,controlledconducting, weretheimpressionsleftby Ravel'sSuitefrom"Daphnisand Chloe."Thevarietyoftonal colour,rhythmandbalancethat Mr.Goosensdrewfromtheorchestra,andthewell-nighper-
