-Alargecrowdgatheredat theShipholairportnearhere towelcomeMrs.AdelineHertog andher13-year-old,Moslemtraineddaughter,Bertha.

Thetwohadji.istcomefrom Singaporewherethelegaldisputetodeterminewhether Berthashouldbereturnedto hermotherorremainwitha Malayanfostermotherand Moslemhusbandhadtouched offmobviolence.

Berthawaspermittedtoreturnherewithhermotherby authoritiesinSingaporewith thestipulationthatshemust returntoSingaporeifacourt ofappealsdecisionshouldgo againstthemother.

Amongthosewaitingtogreet theplanewereMr.Hertog, Bertha'sfather,andherthree sistersandthreebrothers.

Initsdecisionthecourtsaid:

"Notonlybythelawofthe colonybutalsobyMohammedanlaw,underwhichthe marriagewaspurportedto havebeensolemnized,Bertha wasnotaMohammedansince thefatherhadneverabrogated hislegalrightoverhernor consentedtotheembracingof theMoslemfaithbythechild."

Asanadditionalreason,the courtsaidthatthehusbandhad nodomicileinthecolony.

Shaiku_ul-Islam,chiefMoslem oftheStateofSelangor,con-

firmedinanaffidavitthatthe actualsolemnizingofthemarriagewasoutsidethelaw,the childdefinitelyhavingbeen giventothemother,whofreely placedherwiththenunspend- ingtheappeal.

RecentMoslemmobviolence herebroughtdamagetotwo Catholicchurchesandfora whilethreatenedthesafetyof severalpriestsandnuns.

Thefeelingsofthecrowds werewhippedupbylocalnewspapersandsomeMoslemswho calledtheHighCourtdecision anaffronttotheirreligion.

Aheavypoliceguardpreventedthemobfromforcingits wayintotheGoodShepherd convent.Thedamagetothe twoCatholicchurcheswas causedbystonesandbottles flungbythemob.

Fourpriestsweremolested bythecrowds,butallescapedinjury.Themotorbikeofone priestwasburned.Ayelling mobpeltedtheparishhouseof anotherpriestandshoutedfor himtocomeout.Butheescaped tosafety.Themotorcoachofa groupofnunswasattackedand thewindowsbrokenbefore armedtroopsfinallyquelled thedisorders.

ItisasifHisDivineOmnipotencedemandedthisobeisanceofearthlymonarchsbeforeenteringuponthatlong periodofhumility,thenearly30yearsofthehiddenlife inNazareth.

SENDAI,Japan,Dec.14 (NC.)-SisterMarieGabriel del'Incarnation,oftheGood ShepherdSisters,herereceived aspecialmedalofmeritfrom EmperorHirohitoforheroutstandingsocialwelfarework duringthepast15years.The GoodShepherdSisterscameto Japanin1935andhaveanother communityatKagoshima.

ValenscametoCaesarea,wherethegreatSt.Basil ruledasBishopandwithstoodtothefacetheEmperor's personallegates.Thethreatsofthehereticpersecutor failedtomovethisrockoffaith;andaslongasBasil remainedfirm,thefaithofAsiaMinorwasfirmaValens. then,clothedinhisprideandpower,boldlywenttothe BasilicawhereBasilwaspresidingatthecelebrationof themagnificentliturgyoftheEpiphany.St.GregoryNazianzendescribesthescene:"TheEmperorenteredthe church.ThechantingofthePsalmsechoedthroughthe holyplaceliketherumblingofthunder.Thepeople,like awavingsea,filledthehouseofGod.Suchwastheorder andpompinandaboutthbsanctuary,thatitlookedmore likeheaventhanearth.Basilhimselfstood,erectbeforethe people,astheScripturesdescribeSamuel-hisbodyand eyesandsoulmotionless,asthoughnothingstrangehad takenplace,and,ifImaysayso,hiswholebeingwasfastenedtohisGodandtheholyaltar.Thesacredministers whosurroundedthePontiffwereindeeprecollectedness andreverence.TheEmperorheardandsawallthis.He hadneverbeforewitnessedaspectaclesoimposing.He wasoverpowered."

Thelittleladswhowerenow beginningtoreturnhadenthusiastictalestotellofthedelightsofbeachpicnics,parties, concertsandincredibleamounts andvarietiesoffood-stuffs.It wasplainthateveryoneof themhadhadawonderfultime.
