OrdainedDec.21,1925,inthe chapelofthePontificalUrban college,"DePropagandaFide," byHisEminenceCardinalWilliamVanRossum,C.S.s.R., PrefectoftheSacredCongregationofPropaganda,Doctor Sullivancelebratedhisfirst Massinthecollegechapelon thefollowingday.Servingthis MassweretheRev.Dr.E.Collins,nowparishpriestofShentonPark,andtheVeryRev. DeanF.ByrneofAlbany.
DoctorSullivan,thesonof thelateMr.andMrs.Thomas Sullivan,wasborninKalgoorlie andwaseducated.attheChristianBrothers'collegethere.He leftforRomein1919wherehe readbothhisphilosophyand theologycourses,graduating withthedegreesofDoctorof PhilosophyandDoctorof Theology, ReturningtoAustraliain December1926hewasapppintedassistantatKalgoorlie, apositionwhichhehelduntil March1929.From1929to1933 hewasstationedatSt.Mary's Cathedralandthenspentsome timeas"locumtenens"inthe Maylands,Bayswater,and Kalgoorlieparishes.Twoyears,
1936-38,werespentasParish PriestofBedfordPark-Bayswater.
Enteringthearmyaschaplainin1940,DoctorSullivan sawserviceintheMiddleEast andNewGuinea-inEgyptwith theSixthAustraliandivision andinNewGuineawiththe NewGuineaforce.Leavingthe armyin1944withtherankof Lt.Colonel,Dr.Sullivanwas appointedchaplainatthehome oftheLittleSistersofthePoor, Glendalough.In1946hewas appointedtothepositionof DiocesanDirectoroftheSecretariatofCatholicAction. Thepastfouryearshaveseen asteadygrowthbothinnumb_ ersandinfluenceoftheCatholicyouthmovementsdueto histirelessandselflesswork fortheyoungpeople.Nooccasionistoosmall,nofunctiontoo insignificantforhimtoattend.

Thehallwaspackedtocapacity andthelargecrowdshowed theirappreciationofthevar_ iousitems,Whichincluded choralitems,boys'gymnastic display,andtheplay"Bethlehem."Theeveningconcludedwiththereadingoftheannual schoolreportbytheVeryRev. A.E.Johnston.
Oneweeklater,lice.16, FatherChristmasvisitedthe childrenattheschoolanddistributedgiftstothemfromtheir Christmastree.Theevening wasenjoyedtothefullbyboth childrenandadults.

WhenBrotherJohnJeromeO'Connordiedat ClontarfBoys'Town,Dec.23,attheageof81, therepassedawayahumbleReligiouswho,nevertheless,hadfilledhisdayswiththeworkof Godamongorphanladsfor62years,morethan 50ofwhichwerespentatClontarf.
Hewasamongthefirstgroup ofAustralianyoungmento enterthecongregationofthe ChristianBrothers,andwas oneofthepioneergroupwho foundedClontarfhalfacenturyago.
BorninGeelong,heentered theBrothers'novitiatethereat theageof19.HetaughtsuccessivelyatVictoriaParade, Melbourne,andatAbbotsford.
In1897hecameWestand joinedthecommunitywhich hadchargeoforphanboysat Subiaco.WhentheSistersof Mercytransferredtheirorphan girlstoVictoriaSquare,Bishop GibneyaskedtheBrothersto seekamoresuitablesite,and BrotherO'Connorwassmong thosewhoassistedtheBishop inselectingthesiteonthe Canningriver.
Whiletheorphanagewas beingbuilt,fromJanuarytoSeptember1901,allmaterialswere broughtuptheriverbybarge. Allsupplieshadtobehauled throughthetracklesssandfrom thecar-barn,EastPerth. BrotherO'Connorledthe,first groupofboysintotheirnew homeonOurLady'sbirthday.
Exceptfortwoyearsspentat Nudgee,Queensland,andthe waryearsatCastledare, BrotherO'Connorspentthe wholeofhisreligiouslifeat Clontarf,wherehewasnoted forunselfishnessanddevotion toduty.InFebruary,1948,he celebratedhisdiamondjubilee asaReligious.
Shortlyafterwardsadvancingyearscompelledhimtogive upteaching,buthisinterestin hisyoungchargesneverflag_ gedandtheirrespectforhis fairnesswasbestinstancesby thewayinwhichex-students
re-visitingClontarfwouldask firstforBrotherO'Connor.
Despitehavinglivedthe hiddeiilife,alwaysshunning publicity,BrotherO'Connor's obsequiesattractedalarge congregationincluding20 priests.HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedattheSolemn RequiemMasscelebratedbythe Rev.C.Stinson,Dec.26.The Rev.E.Rogerswasdeaconand theRev.F.O'Connor,subdeacon.Theceremonieswere carriedoutunderthedirection oftheRev.R.Kelly.Priests andBrotherscombinedtochant themusicoftheMassafter whichtheintermenttookplace atKarrakatta.

Theopeningofanewyear onJanuary 1isdueratherto thewhimsicalcustomofmankindthantoanyotherreason. Thereisnothingastronomical tosetthedate,whichispurely arbitrary.Thereforeithasbeen changedanumberoftimes.
Thebacchanalianorgythat markstheendoftheoldand thebeginningofthenewyear formanyhasitsrootsfarback inpaganism.TheChurchfought itforcenturiesamongtheancientRomans,butneversucceededincompletelyblottingit out.
TheTeutonicandSaxonancestorsoftheEnglishpeoplere_ fusedtocelebrateNewYear's daywithoutthewassailbowl. Wearetoldthatthebowlwasso hugeamanhadtoliftitwith bothhandstodrinkoutofit, andafriendalwaysstoodby withadrawnswordtouseiton anybystanderwhomighttakeit intohisdrunkenheadtostabthe drinker.Thewordwassailcomes fromaSaxonword,wasshail, whichmeans"Toyourhealth."
Thetermwasappliednotonly toNewYear'sdrinking.Aliquor ofthisnamewasusedforcen_ turiesinEnglandonChristmas, Twelfth-Night,andotherfestive occasions,andwasusuallymade ofaleorwineflavouredwith spices,sugar,toast,roastedap- ples,etc.Thewordwasapplied alsotothefolksingingthataccompanieddrinkingcelebrations,
asinScott'sexpression:"In merrywassailhe pealshis loudsong."Oftenwassailhadan innocentmeaning,aswhenused forChristmascarols.

BeforetheBolshevikscame intopowerinRussia,New Year'swasbric-a-bracday.The countrywasfamousforitsporcelainart,andmenputcandy intothemostexquisitecaskets ofSaxeorSevresporcelain,or intomagnificentenamelledsilverwareboxes,whichtheygave totheirwivesorwomenfriends.

IndiansheldgreatNewYear's festivals.TheHopiIndiansof theSouthwest,alsoknownas Moquis,stillabout1,800strong. oneoftheShoshoneandivisions ofthePueblos,becamefamous forasundanceonNewYear's. Itwaspagan,ofcourse,but likeotherIndiandanceswas givenaChristianallegoricalinterpretationafterthepeople's conversion.

Ifweweretoconsultthe seasons,springwouldbethe naturaltimetostarttheyear. Itwasthisamongtheancient Jews,andalsoamongtheRomans.TheRomanyearbegan inMarchuntilJuliusCaesar correctedthecalendarin46 B.C.andmadeJanuarythefirst month.Themonthwasnamed afterJanus,agodpicturedwith twofaces,backtoback,which allowedhimtolookbothways atonce.Thesefacesprobably stoodforbothsidesofadoor, andhewastheguardianof gatesanddoors,andhenceof allbeginnings.Themythfitted theendingandthebeginningof ayear. Thenameofthemonth,the firstafterthewintersolstice, wasinLatinJanuarius,and thisnamebecamefamousin CatholichistorythroughtheliquefactionofthebloodofSt. Januarius,whichstilloccurs regularly.JanuariuswasBishop ofNaplesandwasbeheadedfor thefaithabout305withseveral ofhisclergyandtwolaymen.
ThebloodofSt.Januarius, preservedintwovials,publicly liquefieseveryyearonhisfeastday(Sept.19)andsometimes onotheroccasions,asvast crowdswatch.Nonaturalexplanationhaseverbeenfound. TherelicsofSt.Januarius,in achapeloftheNaplesCathedral,havebeenvenerated whileprayersweresaidseveral timeswhennearbyVesuvius waseruptingandhavestopped thevolcano.Therehavealso beenotherwonders.Thesefacts aretoowellsubstantiatedtobe denied.
ThenamesofSeptember, October,November,andDecemberstillremindusofthe timeswhentheyearbeganin March;forthenamesmeanthe seventh,eighth,ninth,andtenth months.
