OneofthemembersoftheBoardofManagementofthe"Record"theVeryRev.Dr.E.Sullivan,D.Ph.,D.D.,celebratedthesilverjubileeof hisordinationtothepriesthoodDec.21.

OrdainedDec.21,1925,inthe chapelofthePontificalUrban college,"DePropagandaFide," byHisEminenceCardinalWilliamVanRossum,C.S.s.R., PrefectoftheSacredCongregationofPropaganda,Doctor Sullivancelebratedhisfirst Massinthecollegechapelon thefollowingday.Servingthis MassweretheRev.Dr.E.Collins,nowparishpriestofShentonPark,andtheVeryRev. DeanF.ByrneofAlbany.

DoctorSullivan,thesonof thelateMr.andMrs.Thomas Sullivan,wasborninKalgoorlie andwaseducated.attheChristianBrothers'collegethere.He leftforRomein1919wherehe readbothhisphilosophyand theologycourses,graduating withthedegreesofDoctorof PhilosophyandDoctorof Theology, ReturningtoAustraliain December1926hewasapppintedassistantatKalgoorlie, apositionwhichhehelduntil March1929.From1929to1933 hewasstationedatSt.Mary's Cathedralandthenspentsome timeas"locumtenens"inthe Maylands,Bayswater,and Kalgoorlieparishes.Twoyears,

1936-38,werespentasParish PriestofBedfordPark-Bayswater.

Enteringthearmyaschaplainin1940,DoctorSullivan sawserviceintheMiddleEast andNewGuinea-inEgyptwith theSixthAustraliandivision andinNewGuineawiththe NewGuineaforce.Leavingthe armyin1944withtherankof Lt.Colonel,Dr.Sullivanwas appointedchaplainatthehome oftheLittleSistersofthePoor, Glendalough.In1946hewas appointedtothepositionof DiocesanDirectoroftheSecretariatofCatholicAction. Thepastfouryearshaveseen asteadygrowthbothinnumb_ ersandinfluenceoftheCatholicyouthmovementsdueto histirelessandselflesswork fortheyoungpeople.Nooccasionistoosmall,nofunctiontoo insignificantforhimtoattend.

Nightafternightheattendsrallies,badge-givingceremonies, andotherfunctionsorganised bytheY.C.W.andN.C.G.M.In theopinionofthoseconnected withtheyouthmovementsit hasbeenhisinterestandsustainingenthusiasmthathas beenresponsiblefortheremarkablevitalityandgrowthofthe CatholicActionbodies.

Althoughthejubileewascelebratedprivately,Dr.Sullivan wastenderedaluncheonbythe BoardofManagementofthe "Record."

OnFridayDec.9,inthe Communityhall,Collinsstreet, thechildrenoftheparish schoolheldtheirannualconcert. Thehallwaspackedtocapacity andthelargecrowdshowed theirappreciationofthevar_ iousitems,Whichincluded choralitems,boys'gymnastic display,andtheplay"Bethlehem."Theeveningconcludedwiththereadingoftheannual schoolreportbytheVeryRev. A.E.Johnston.

Oneweeklater,lice.16, FatherChristmasvisitedthe childrenattheschoolanddistributedgiftstothemfromtheir Christmastree.Theevening wasenjoyedtothefullbyboth childrenandadults.

Friday,,Feb.16willalsobea nightworthremembering,becauseonthatnight,intheCollinsstreethall,RoyGalvinis goingtoshowtechnicolour filmsdepictinghisjourneywith theAustralianpilgrimageto Rome,Lourdes,Fatima,Lisieux, andLondonaswellashisown travelstoGermany,otherEuropeancountries,Ireland,Scotland,andWales.

WhenBrotherJohnJeromeO'Connordiedat ClontarfBoys'Town,Dec.23,attheageof81, therepassedawayahumbleReligiouswho,nevertheless,hadfilledhisdayswiththeworkof Godamongorphanladsfor62years,morethan 50ofwhichwerespentatClontarf.

Hewasamongthefirstgroup ofAustralianyoungmento enterthecongregationofthe ChristianBrothers,andwas oneofthepioneergroupwho foundedClontarfhalfacenturyago.

BorninGeelong,heentered theBrothers'novitiatethereat theageof19.HetaughtsuccessivelyatVictoriaParade, Melbourne,andatAbbotsford.

In1897hecameWestand joinedthecommunitywhich hadchargeoforphanboysat Subiaco.WhentheSistersof Mercytransferredtheirorphan girlstoVictoriaSquare,Bishop GibneyaskedtheBrothersto seekamoresuitablesite,and BrotherO'Connorwassmong thosewhoassistedtheBishop inselectingthesiteonthe Canningriver.

Whiletheorphanagewas beingbuilt,fromJanuarytoSeptember1901,allmaterialswere broughtuptheriverbybarge. Allsupplieshadtobehauled throughthetracklesssandfrom thecar-barn,EastPerth. BrotherO'Connorledthe,first groupofboysintotheirnew homeonOurLady'sbirthday.

Exceptfortwoyearsspentat Nudgee,Queensland,andthe waryearsatCastledare, BrotherO'Connorspentthe wholeofhisreligiouslifeat Clontarf,wherehewasnoted forunselfishnessanddevotion toduty.InFebruary,1948,he celebratedhisdiamondjubilee asaReligious.

Shortlyafterwardsadvancingyearscompelledhimtogive upteaching,buthisinterestin hisyoungchargesneverflag_ gedandtheirrespectforhis fairnesswasbestinstancesby thewayinwhichex-students

re-visitingClontarfwouldask firstforBrotherO'Connor.

Despitehavinglivedthe hiddeiilife,alwaysshunning publicity,BrotherO'Connor's obsequiesattractedalarge congregationincluding20 priests.HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedattheSolemn RequiemMasscelebratedbythe Rev.C.Stinson,Dec.26.The Rev.E.Rogerswasdeaconand theRev.F.O'Connor,subdeacon.Theceremonieswere carriedoutunderthedirection oftheRev.R.Kelly.Priests andBrotherscombinedtochant themusicoftheMassafter whichtheintermenttookplace atKarrakatta.

Morethan75priests,someofwhomhad travelledhundredsofmiles,werepresentatthe SolemnOfficeoftheDeadandSolemnRequiem MassforthelateRev.EugeneCarolanwhichwere heldinSt.Aidan'schurch,MosmanPark,Dec.21. Forthepast10years,thedeceasedhadbeenunabletotake anactivepartintheworksof theOrder,butgavewillingly ofhertimeandenergyinpreparingthelittlechildrenfor theirreceptionoftheSacraments,aworkverydeartoher andoneforwhichshewas eminentlysuited.

GordonThorpethenew memberoftheclubwhocame fromIndiacompetingforthe firsttimeinW.A.finishedthird inthehighjump.Inthesecond divisionofthesameeventJ. Chilversdead-heatedforfirst place.

P.Jerratt,competinginthe topgradeforthefirsttimegave averygooddisplay.Hegained twosecondplacesinthe220 yardand440yds.hurdles.

"B"Grade:Y.C.W.againincreaseditstremendouslead overtherestofthe"B"grade teams.Toillustratethestrength oftheteaminthe"B"Gradein whichtherearesixotherteams) outofapossible28winsY.C.W. won11,with10secondplaces, andthreefourthplaces;theclub hadnorepresentativesinthe otherfourraces.Y.C.W.also wontherelay.

R.Smitharanagood220 ydshurdlestowincomfortably. ThiswinandD.Daly's880yds victoryweretheonlytwowins registeredbytheteaminthis gradebesidestherelay.
