Despitethegravereverses inKorea,thereispractical evidenceofAmericanattachmenttotheprinciplethat "appeasementofevilisnot theroadtopeace."Likewise, theBritishPrimeMinister hasstatedthatwemuststand firmagainstappeasement. However,thereareincreas.ingindicationsfromBritish sourcesofa"softening-up" propagandaprocesswhich doesnotringwithanygreat sincerity.

Therehavebeenforsome timemutteringsabouttheineptitudeandcorruptionof SynghamRhee'sgovernment, muchastherewereagainst ChiangKai-shek'sbeforehe wasabandonedbytheWesternnations.Nowweare beingtoldthattheSouth Koreansareindulgingin massexecutionsandatrocitiesofsuchmagnitudethat Britishofficersandmenare openlyrefusingmilitarydutiesinsupportofsucha cause.

MoralIndignationIs ALittleStrainedHere

Supposingthatsuchreportsaretrue,thefirstreactionisthattheUnitedNations'securitymeasuresneed immediateandstringent tightening.Itisreallyvery surprisingthatcasesofcontemplatedmutinycanbe freelydisseminatedasifthey wereunlikelytogiveaidand comforttotheenemy.

Moreover,inviewofthe recentbarbarousconductof theNorthKoreanswhenthey wereinretreat,thepresent hightoneofdiscriminatory moralindignationsoundsa littlestrained.For,while theAllieshavenocontrol overtheactionsoftheNorth Koreans,thereseemsnorea-

sonswhytheyshouldnotexercisesomerestraintoverthe Southerners,themoreso whentheallegedatrocities arebeingcommittedright undertheirnoses. Thereareotherreflections, also,whichmightcausethe cynicaltowonderwhether thecurioustoneofcurrent propagandamaynotbeapreludeforsomegenuine,if highly-camouflaged,appeasement.Onesuchistheconsiderationthatsomeofthe BritishofficersinKoreamust havefoughtasAlliesofthe RussiansinWorldWarII. Noonehaseversuggested theRedswereanythingbut animalsintheirtreatmentof

prisoners,asthemillionsyet intheirslavelabourcamps attest,yetwecannotrecall a,nyhigh-souledprotestfrom theofficerclassoranycuriouslapsesinsecuritytothe detrimentofour"glorious allies."

DelusionsPersistAbout InnerNatureofBattle

AnotherpointtorememberisthattheUnitedNations'campaigninKoreawas longheldup,notonlyfor lackofmenandsupplies, hutalsobecauseofthegreat andcontinuousprocessofinfiltrationofNorthKoreans behindtheirlines.These saboteursandfifthcolumnistshavechangedovernight,

itwouldappear,toinnocent civilians.Amongthoseexecuted,itisreported,are youngchildrenwhosebodies, however,cannotbelocated.

Everynowandthen,this Left-Wingslantingofnews whichhasdisgracedournews servicesforyearspast,crops upagain.Itspresentform intheKoreanconflictisthat wearenotfightingCommunistsbutaggressors.Well, theNorthKoreansandthe Chinesearebothaggressors andCommunists.Andthe wholeplaintruthisthataggressionisoftheinnersoul andnatureofCommunism, Itisacrusadingforceofevil, andithasnorivalinourday.

necessaryfirstofalltorenew theheartsofmen,torepress covetousnessandgreed,toallayhatreds,toreallyputinto practicethenormsanddealings ofjustice,tobringaboutabetterdistributionofwealth,to fostermutualcharityandto stirupvirtueinall.

Thereisnothingwhichcan conducemoreeffectivelyand contributemoretotheattainmentofthisgreatobjective thantheChristianreligion;for itsdivinepreceptsteachus thatmen,asbrothers,formone familywhoseFatherisGod,of whichChrististheRedeemer andbyHisheavenlygracethe nourisher,andwhoselasting homelandisHeaven.

Ifthesepreceptswerereally anddulyputintoeffect,then withoutanydoubtnowars, sedition,strifeorsuppression ofcivilorreligiousliberty woulddisturbpublicandprivatelife,butapeacefulstability,foundedonrightorderand justice,wouldpossesstheminds andsoulsofmen,andwould openupasafepathtotheattainmentofadailygrowing measureofprosperity.

Thisisindeedadifficultbut necessarytask.Andifnecessaryitcanbrooknodelay,but shouldbeputintoeffectassoon aspossible.Ifitisdifficultand beyondhumancapacity,then wemusthaverecoursein prayerandsupplicationtothe heavenlyFather,asdown throughthecenturiesintimes ofcrisisourforefathershave donewithhappyandsalutary results.

WhereforeWestronglyurge andexhortyou,Venerable Brothren,toarrangeforpublic supplicationsandtoinviteyour flockstoimplorepeaceand concordforpeoples;sothat underthepatronageofreligion theremaybeasacredstruggle, asitwere,tooffsetthatabominablestrifewhichthreatens thewholehumanfamilywith somanydangers.

TheBritishGovernmentfound itverydifficulttotakeanyeffectiveactionwherethedenial ofhumanrightswasnotanacti.Mbreachofaninternational treaty.

LordHendersonwasreplying attheendofalongdebateon thesubjectraisedinBritain's upperhousebytheProtestant ArchbishopofYork,Dr.Cyril Garbett.

Dr.Garbett,denouncingthe persecutionofreligioninCommunist-controlledcountries,suggestedamotionbemadethat thegovernmentshouldbring ..nisquestionbeforetheUnited Nations.

Dr.Garbettsaidthatsincethe wartherehadbeenarisingtide ofpersecutionofreligionin mostofthecommunistcountries andthecommunistsaimedat destroyingChristianitycompletely.Asthishadnotprovedimmediatelypracticabletheywere reducingtheChurchestoapositionofsubserviencetothe Communistparty.

Onediscordant'elementthatsurroundedthefirstCrib persistsagainsttheuniversalChurchto-day.Itisthehate ofHerodagainsttheChrist-Child.Theprincesofthe earthhavejoinedforcesagainsttheLordGodandagainst HisChrist.ForthesmallSaviourofBethlehemisyetvulnerabletoHisenemiesinHisMysticalBody,theChurch. AndtheChurchreflectsinitslifeto-dayanalmostuncannyfacsimileoftheearthlylifeofOurLord. Truly, with11,000priestskilledorexiledforreligioninthe Russiansatellitecountries,theCatholicChurchmaybe saidtohaveentereduponthepathtoCalvary.Itmay verywellbethattheChurchwillbedrivenbackto thecatacombs,whichweresoverylikethecaveofBethlelem,withthefearofHerodandNeroapparentlytriumph- ingonthefaceoftheearth.ButGodisnotmocked,and soonerorlaterthemenofbloodgodownandtheChurch, purifiedandennobledbyhertorments,emergeswithanew effulgencetowitnessagainthatSheisnoearthlything, butthemanufactureofGod'sownhand.

SowecometoanotherChristmasinaworlddistraught withthedreadofanother,unthinkableconflict.Homesfrom whichthenumbnessoflossesenduredfromthecarnageof thepastconflicthasscarcelylifted,areaskedagaintogive theirsonsanddaughtersindefenceofrightandliberty.It isagrimandterrifyinglessonoftheevil,hate,andhorror whichmenunleashwhohaverejectedGod.Fortheymove unknowinglytotheirdestructionaswellasours.Yet, forebodingastheprospectsofworldpeaceappear,there canbeamongChristianmennopessimismordefeatism. Becauseeventhoughourfightisnotmerelyagainstthe powersofdarknessinthisworldandinthenext,wefight forGod(despiteourweaknessesandinfidelities),andwho shalloverthrowHim?Peacemaystillexistinthehearts ofChristiansbecauseperfectlovecastethoutfear.There ispeacenowandalwaysformenofgoodwill.Itisthe abiding-paradoxoftheChristianlifethattheinnertranquillity,whichcomesoftheacceptanceofGod'sorder,canand doesexistinthemidstofexternalviolenceanddisorder.

SoitisthatmartyrswereatpeaceintheRoman amphitheatre.Indeed,ifthespiritoftruepeaceistobe positive,itmustproveitselfpreciselyinthefaceofcircumstanceswhichmilitateagainstit.OnthefirstChristmasnightthereseemedtobelittleintheorderingofthat paganworldthatgavepromiseofpeace,yettheserenityof thatlittlegroupaboutthemangerradiatedintimetothe endsoftheearth.Itistrueto-daythatsolongasmen followthestartoBethlehemtheymayfindthegiftofGod. JUDICIALPRECEDENTSREgulatingbathfrequencywere established. InWoonsocket, R.I.,ajudge,whilegrantinga divorce-seekingwifethetemporarypossessionofthefamily cottage,decreedthatthehusband "mayreturntotheabovestated residenceonedayineachweek forthepurposeoftakinga bath." Thencamethefirstoftwo tragediesthatweretoshakehis agnosticismandtoproveitinadequatetosupplytheneedsof humanlife.InJuly,1942,his eldestsondied.Therewere still,however,threechildren. "Oursorrowwascommon,"he notes,"andtherewassomuch tokeepourmindsbusyinthe warthatonehopedthatintime thewoundwouldfilmover."

In1943Dr.Harrisoncameto Canadatotakethepositionof headofthedepartmentofEnglishatQueen'suniversitynil Kingston.Hisfamilywasscatteredbythewar,andtherewere justhiswifeandhimself.Early in1947itappearedthatthefamilymightsoonbeunitedonce more.Hisyoungestsonwas expectingreleasefromthearmy withintheyear.ButinJanuaryofthatyearhewasaccidentallykilledwhileonguard duty.

Therefollowedseveraldays ofintensethought,theupshotofwhichwasthedecisionthat "onceonecouldacceptthe centralposition-thattheChurch asacorporatebody,divinely andsupernaturallyfounded, fortifiedbycenturiesofaccu- mulatedwisdomandexperience, wasmorecapableofinterpre- tingthesupernaturalandofde- finingadogmathananyindi- vidual,nomatterhowgifted -thenallthedifficultieswould disappear;buttheactofsubmittingprivatejudgmentwould behard,foracademicsarebytrainingandprofessionthicklycoatedwithintellectualar- rogance."

Havingheardmuchofthe kindnessoftheArchbishopof Kingston,theHarrisonsasked foraninterview.Twoweeks later Thetheybeganinstructions. surprisewasthelackof pressureorsalesmanshipused onthem.Thadoctrinesofthe Churchwereexplainedwithout compromise.Theywereas- toundedtofindhowgrossly manyofthe misrepresentedteachingshadbeen tothem.

"Ourinstructioncompleted, wewerereceivedintothe Churchandconfirmedbythe ArchbishoponJune14,1947.I hadneverexpectedthatIshould receivea periencedirectreligiousexofanykind.Whenit cameitwassodeepandintense thatforalongtimeIwasafraid thattherewouldbeacorres- pondingreaction.Morethana yearpassed,andwitheachweek newcupboardswerebeing opened,newexperiencesgained, rootsreacheddowndeeper.

Thebestavailablefilmsarehiredfromthevariousexchances.Manypicturesscreenedbesideshavingentertainmentvalueareexcellenteducationadjuncts.

DuringthesecondtermaDavey-Paxtonboilerwasinstalledtoreplacethepreviousboilerwhichwasfartoo smallforourrequirements.Thenewboileleprovideson adequatesupplyofhotwaterandsteamforallpurposes, andhasenabledourhotwaterandsteamsystemstobe greatlyimprovedandextended.

TheFirstEighteenhadaverygoodseason,beingsecond toScotchCollegewhohovepossessionoftheAlcockCup until1951.WecongratulateScotchontheirsuccess. PercyJohnsonwaselectedCaptain.Tothecoaches,Mr. J.DolanandMr.M.Cronin,weareverygrateful.

GarrettCullitywaselectedCaptainoftheFirstEleven for1950.Althoughtheteamwasleadingattheendof thefirstseriesofmatches,itdidnotdosowellinthe secondround.HoleSchoolistobecongratulatedonits success. OnApril27thAquinashadaverysuccessfuldaywhen theHeadoftheRiverRegattawasheld.Wewonthreeof thefourevents,includingthe"HeadoftheRiver"itself. TheFirstEightoretobecongratulatedonamagnificent raceinwhichtheybroketheelevenyearoldrecord.

TheSecondEightandtheOldBoysEightalsowontheir events,whiletheThirdCrewfinishedaclosesecondto HaleSchool.

ThesuccessoftheSchoolcrewsislargelyduetothe enthusiasmandefficiencyofMr.A.Dobson,ourRowing coach,andhiscapableassistant,Mr.J.Hunt,whocoached thewinningSecondEight.

Onenaturallyexpectsgirlsto belessself-consciousthanboys onthestage,andsomorenaturalandrealistic.One,therfore,wasnotsosurprisedatthe excellenceoftheworkofLucy andJacinta.Butwithoutmeaningtodetractfromthatexcellence,inthecircumstances,the portrayalofFranciscowasso excellentthatitwouldbevery difficulttoimproveonit.He wassoverynatural,bothinhis movementsandinhisdialogue, everywordbeingdistinctilly heard.

Oneisatalosstoknow whethertowaxmoreeloquent regardingtheactingofthe children,orindescribingthe beautyandsymbolismofthe tableaux.Onedoescertainly standout,namely,theapparition.Tosaythatitwouldbe impossibletoselectagirlmore fittingandmorecapableoftakingthepartofOurLady,isnot anexaggeration.Atherevery appearanceherbeautyseemed moreenhanced.
