Supposingthatsuchreportsaretrue,thefirstreactionisthattheUnitedNations'securitymeasuresneed immediateandstringent tightening.Itisreallyvery surprisingthatcasesofcontemplatedmutinycanbe freelydisseminatedasifthey wereunlikelytogiveaidand comforttotheenemy.
Moreover,inviewofthe recentbarbarousconductof theNorthKoreanswhenthey wereinretreat,thepresent hightoneofdiscriminatory moralindignationsoundsa littlestrained.For,while theAllieshavenocontrol overtheactionsoftheNorth Koreans,thereseemsnorea-

Ifthesepreceptswerereally anddulyputintoeffect,then withoutanydoubtnowars, sedition,strifeorsuppression ofcivilorreligiousliberty woulddisturbpublicandprivatelife,butapeacefulstability,foundedonrightorderand justice,wouldpossesstheminds andsoulsofmen,andwould openupasafepathtotheattainmentofadailygrowing measureofprosperity.

TheBritishGovernmentfound itverydifficulttotakeanyeffectiveactionwherethedenial ofhumanrightswasnotanacti.Mbreachofaninternational treaty.
LordHendersonwasreplying attheendofalongdebateon thesubjectraisedinBritain's upperhousebytheProtestant ArchbishopofYork,Dr.Cyril Garbett.
Dr.Garbett,denouncingthe persecutionofreligioninCommunist-controlledcountries,suggestedamotionbemadethat thegovernmentshouldbring ..nisquestionbeforetheUnited Nations.
Dr.Garbettsaidthatsincethe wartherehadbeenarisingtide ofpersecutionofreligionin mostofthecommunistcountries andthecommunistsaimedat destroyingChristianitycompletely.Asthishadnotprovedimmediatelypracticabletheywere reducingtheChurchestoapositionofsubserviencetothe Communistparty.

AndtheChurchreflectsinitslifeto-dayanalmostuncannyfacsimileoftheearthlylifeofOurLord. Truly, with11,000priestskilledorexiledforreligioninthe Russiansatellitecountries,theCatholicChurchmaybe saidtohaveentereduponthepathtoCalvary.Itmay verywellbethattheChurchwillbedrivenbackto thecatacombs,whichweresoverylikethecaveofBethlelem,withthefearofHerodandNeroapparentlytriumph- ingonthefaceoftheearth.ButGodisnotmocked,and soonerorlaterthemenofbloodgodownandtheChurch, purifiedandennobledbyhertorments,emergeswithanew effulgencetowitnessagainthatSheisnoearthlything, butthemanufactureofGod'sownhand.
SowecometoanotherChristmasinaworlddistraught withthedreadofanother,unthinkableconflict.Homesfrom whichthenumbnessoflossesenduredfromthecarnageof thepastconflicthasscarcelylifted,areaskedagaintogive theirsonsanddaughtersindefenceofrightandliberty.It isagrimandterrifyinglessonoftheevil,hate,andhorror whichmenunleashwhohaverejectedGod.Fortheymove unknowinglytotheirdestructionaswellasours.Yet, forebodingastheprospectsofworldpeaceappear,there canbeamongChristianmennopessimismordefeatism. Becauseeventhoughourfightisnotmerelyagainstthe powersofdarknessinthisworldandinthenext,wefight forGod(despiteourweaknessesandinfidelities),andwho shalloverthrowHim?Peacemaystillexistinthehearts ofChristiansbecauseperfectlovecastethoutfear.There ispeacenowandalwaysformenofgoodwill.Itisthe abiding-paradoxoftheChristianlifethattheinnertranquillity,whichcomesoftheacceptanceofGod'sorder,canand doesexistinthemidstofexternalviolenceanddisorder.
SoitisthatmartyrswereatpeaceintheRoman amphitheatre.Indeed,ifthespiritoftruepeaceistobe positive,itmustproveitselfpreciselyinthefaceofcircumstanceswhichmilitateagainstit.OnthefirstChristmasnightthereseemedtobelittleintheorderingofthat paganworldthatgavepromiseofpeace,yettheserenityof thatlittlegroupaboutthemangerradiatedintimetothe endsoftheearth.Itistrueto-daythatsolongasmen followthestartoBethlehemtheymayfindthegiftofGod. Everyseatwasoccupiedon FridaynightDec.8atHisMajesty'swhenthe"Messageof Fatima"waspresented.Indeed hundredsweredisappointedat notbeingabletosecureseats. Thosewhowerefortunatewere almostspellboundduringthe twohours'presentation.On everysidecouldbeheardexpressionsofsincerepraisefor theadmirableproduction.
Neverbeforefromthestage ofHisMajesty's,orfromthe stageofanyothertheatre,was putoveramessagethatstruck hometotheheartsoftheaudiencesoforciblyasdidthemessageofFatima,namelythenecessityofpenanceandprayeras themeansofbringingtheworld backtothefeetofGod.
Thethreelittleshepherds weremagnificientintheirportrayalsoftheirparts.Theirswas notacting;onefeltthattheir superbimpersonationswerethe outcomeofalovefor'thebeautifulLady'andakeendesire thatmenwouldonlylistento herappealforthedailyRosary, asameanstopeace.
Onenaturallyexpectsgirlsto belessself-consciousthanboys onthestage,andsomorenaturalandrealistic.One,therfore,wasnotsosurprisedatthe excellenceoftheworkofLucy andJacinta.Butwithoutmeaningtodetractfromthatexcellence,inthecircumstances,the portrayalofFranciscowasso excellentthatitwouldbevery difficulttoimproveonit.He wassoverynatural,bothinhis movementsandinhisdialogue, everywordbeingdistinctilly heard.
Oneisatalosstoknow whethertowaxmoreeloquent regardingtheactingofthe children,orindescribingthe beautyandsymbolismofthe tableaux.Onedoescertainly standout,namely,theapparition.Tosaythatitwouldbe impossibletoselectagirlmore fittingandmorecapableoftakingthepartofOurLady,isnot anexaggeration.Atherevery appearanceherbeautyseemed moreenhanced.
TheAngelofPortugalwas admirablyportrayedandwon meritedpraise.
Ifthesearesingledout,itis notthattheothercharacters andtheothertableauxdonot deserveunqualifiedpraise;itis merelythatspaceandtimepre- venttheirbeinggivenfullmead ofpraise.
OneleftHisMajesty'son Fridaynightwiththedeepconvictionthatthestageisa mediumofconveyingGod's messagetomanthatisnotsuf-
ficientlyexploited.MorepresentationslikethatofFatima, thatareconducivetoourmoral uplift,andlessofthoseproductionsthattendtolowerand abase,andperhapsMary'spromiseofthetriumphofherImmaculateHeartmightbethe soonerfulfilled

"TheMessageofFatima."The SistersandtheStaroftheSea presidiumoftheLegion,and thoseunselfishworkersbehind thescenesdeserveoursincere thanks;butaboveall,wethank thethreelittleshepherds,for thepowerfulsermontheyso simplyandconvincinglypreached.AsIleftthetheatreon thatmemorableFridaynight andreflectedonthegraciouness ofOurLadyinrevealingherselfandhermessagetothose
littleones,thewordsofHoly Writcameunbiddentomylips: "Alittlechildshallleadthem." Followinganoperation,the',Rev.EugeneCarolarcollapsedanddiedatSt.JohnofGodhospital,Subiaco,Dec.19.FatherCarolanwasnoted forhisenergy,enthusiasmandwideinterests.He wasconspicuouslysuccessfulamongthemenfolk, especiallyinKalgoorlie.Amongmanyotherinterestsheservedasamemberoftheboardofmanagementof"TheRecord."
BornatBailieboor,Co.Cavan, Irelandin1910,hemadehis priestlystudiesatAllHallows' college,Dublin,wherehewas ordainedin1937.Withinthree monthshearrivedinthisState andwasappointedassistant priestatCottesloe.
AfteraperiodaslocumtenensatGuildford,FatherCarolanwasappointedbythe Archbishopin1940administratoratKalgoorlie,where,despite delicatehealth,heworkedwith intenseenthusiasmforalmost sixyears.
Hishealthbrokedownin 1946andhewenttoIrelandto recuperate.Onhisreturnin 1948hewasappointedlocum tenensoftheBelmontparish, andaftertwelvemonthsacted inasimilarcapacityatOsborne Park.InFebruaryofthisyear, hewasappointedtoMosman Park,whereinadditiontoordinaryparochialdutiesheattendedtothespiritualneedsof thePresentationSistersand theirpupils.
