Theeloquentdiscouilseby FatherHoganthatmorning dealtparticularlywiththespiritualmeritsofthesociety.He saidthatonSaturday,Dec.2, twoformermembersofthesocietywouldberaisedtothe dignityofthepriesthood,namely,FrankDillonofSt.Mary's branch,andTomO'Neill,ofSt. Malachi'sbranch.Thesociety hadhelpedtofostertwovocations,thusplayingitspartin ensuringthecontinuityofthe priesthood.Eachyearacheque contributedtobyallmembers, wassenttoSt.Charles'seminarytowardstheHibernian bursary.

Thefinancialaffairsofthesocietyreceivedconsiderableattention.Amotiontoincrease contributionsofhonoraryand honorary-medicalmemberswas lost. Considerableexpansioninthe investmentofthesociety'sfunds inmortgagewasafavourable featureofthegrandtrustees'report.

Itmustbenotedthatonlytheworkercanrelax.The idlerisincapableofappreciatingthephysicalormentalcontrastbetweenlabourandcessationfromlabour.TheuntiringCatholicActionististheonlyonewhohasarealtitle tomorerelaxationthanthesluggard,forpleasureshouldbe proportionatetoenergyexpended.Itissaidthatthemodernworldispleasure-crazed,anditislargelytruethatmost peopleindulgethemselvesfarabovetheirneeds.Thereis adistastefordiscipline,whichissymptomaticofenervatedspirits.ThiswaslatelyrecognisedalloverEuropeby theauthoritarianState,whosepeopleswerefatedtobedisciplinedwilly-nilly.Thisspectaclewasnotsoappallingas thedied-in-the-wooldemocratsmadeout,butitdiddefinitelylackstabilityforbeingimposedfromwithout.For disciplineisnothingmorethantheexternalmanifestation ofanorderedmindandwill.ThereisevidenceinCatholic circles,too,ofaninordinateattachmenttopleasure.Itis symbolisedbyathoughtlessreadinesstojettisonreally gravespiritualobligations,withoutasufficientreasonor anyhowwithoutcounselorpermission.Whenthingsdrift inthisdirectionitistimetocallahalt.Andthesignal thatthatpointhasbeenreachedistheunwillingnessto submittocompetentarbitrationandastubbornattachment toacourseofactionmerelybecauseitispleasurable.It mustbenotedherethatfeelingsareabsolutelyinvalidasa guidetomoralconductforaCatholic.TheCatholicword is"ought"andnot"like."

WhenDouglasHyde,news editoroftheLondonDaily Workerforfiveyearsanda Communistfor20,hadputthe firsteditiontobedonthenight ofMarch14,1948,hewalked intotheofficeoftheeditorand announcedhisresignation.Five dayslater,onMarch19,the frontpagesofBritishnewspapersheadlinedthestorythat HydehadrenouncedCommunismand,withhiswifeand children,joinedtheChurch.
Theconversionisoneofthe mostsignificantofourgeneration,foritistobehopedthat it,marksthebeginningofarallyingofthedefendersofWestern cultureandcivilizationaround thebanneroftheChurch,the onlyhopeofthatcivilization.

Thereweremanythingsin theCommunistpartyin1928, saysHyde,thatappealedtoa thoughtfulyouthpossessedof hisfullshareofidealism."I wantedtoidentifymyselfwith thepoor,thedowntrodden,the victimizedandpersecuted.The Communistpartyappearedto metofightforallthese.Like mostyouths,Iwantedtobreak freefromconvention-andthe Communistpartywascertainly unconventional.Iwantedanew world,andtheCommunistshad onetooffer.Iwasattractedby thesepeoplewho,inaworld whichappearedtobedrifting along,knewexactlywherethey weregoingandhowtheywere goingtogetthere."

Therecanbenodoubtabout thelongrangeimportanceof theseforthcomingdeliberations. But,contrarytowidespread reports,itcanbedefinitely statedthattheywillnotresult inanyimmediatereformofthe structureorfunctionofreligious life.Thereisnobasiswhatever forspeculationsregardingra dicalchangesinreligioushabits, rulesormodesoflife,either insideoroutsidethecloisters.
