Oneofthemostremarkablenextdecadeweretodisillusion convertsofthepastcenturyin EnglandwasHenryEdward Manning.AnAnglicanminister, awidower,hewasreceivedinto theChurchApril9,1851.Fourteenyearslaterhebecame ArchbishopofWestminsteras thesuccessorofCardinalWiseman,and10yearsafterthat hewashimselfnamedaCardinal.

BorninTottridge,Hertfordshire,July8,1808,Manning wassevenyearsyoungerthan Newman.Asayouthhedreamed ofapoliticalcareerleadinginto Parliament,butbusinessreversessufferedbyhisfather,a Londonbanker,cutoffhishopes andheturnedtotheministry. HewasgraduatedfromOxford in1832andordainedtothe Anglicandiaconate.In1833he wasnamedcurateinLavington parish,wheretherector,Dr. JohnSargent,wasill.Dr. Sargentdiedsoonafterward andyoungManningsucceeded him.

InthemeantimehehadfalleninlovewithoneofDr.Sargent'sdaughters,Caroline,and theyweremarriedNov.17, 1833,beforeAnglicanBishop SamuelWilberforce.OfDr.Sargent'sthreeotherdaughters,one wasthewifeofBishopWilberforce,anothermarriedNewman'sgreatfriend,HenryWilberforce,andthethirdmarried GeorgeDudleyRyder.Thelattertwowereultimatelyreceived,withtheirhusbands, intotheCatholicChurch.

TheAnglicandivine'smarriedlife,however,wastobe brief.Withinfouryearshis wifediedoftuberculosis,but hecherishedhermemoryall hislife.Fromthetimeofher deathhededicatedhimself whollytoreligion.Whenhewas receivedintotheChurch,he wrote:"Fifteenyearsagoa crucifixstoodinsightofher dyingbed,whichtaughtmethe articleoftheCommunionof Saints.Ihaveneverbeenwithoutone."Whenhesetoutfor Romeafterhisordinationto theCatholicpriesthood,herminiaturewasinhispocket.

ThehistoryofManning'sreligiousviewscanbedividedinto threestages.Earlyinhiscareer hefellundertheinfluenceof Evangelicalism,amovementreflectingthespiritofJohnWesleythathadgainedaremarkablefollowinginEnglandin thefirstdecadesofthecentury. Heseemeduntouchedbythe OxfordMovementinthedays ofcaringforhisparish.But eventuallyadoubtroseinhis mind.Ashedescribeditlater:

"Thefirstquestionthatrose inmymindwas:Whatright haveyoutobeteaching,admonishing,reforming,rebuking others?Bywhatauthoritydo yculiftthelatchofapoor man'sdoorandenterandsit downandbegintoinstructor tocorrecthim?Thistrainof thoughtforcedmetoseethat nocultureorknowledgeof GreekorLatinwouldsufficefor this;thatifIwasnotamessengersentfromGod,Iwasan intruderandimpertinent." (Purcell,LifeofCardinalManning,I,p.112).

HewasatthistimethoroughlyalignedwiththeEstablishedChurch.TheTractsfor theTimesbeingdistributedby NewmanandhisOxfordgroup werecausinghimconsiderable thought,butaslateas1836-37 hewasaccountedanardent Evangelical.

Manningsoughttheattributesofunityandinfallibility intheAnglicanChurch.Hebegantobedisillusionedinthis searchbythegrowthofstate interferenceinecclesiasticalaffairs.Hedevotedhimselftothe causeofliberatingtheChurch fromthecontroloftheState, throughsermons,pamphlets, andvoluminouscorrespondence withhisfriendGladstone.It wasnotuntil1850thattherealizationcametohimthat"this RoyalSupremacyisasoldas HenryVIII. Theauthority ofthelivinganduniversal Churchhasbeenshutoutfor 300years"(Purcell,"Lifeof CardinalManning,"I,p.565).

ManningwasshakenbyNewman'swithdrawalintoretirementatLittlemorein1843,after theAnglicancondemnationof hisTract90astooCatholic, andevenmoresobyaletterhe receivedfromNewmaninOctoberofthatyear."Ithinkthe ChurchofRomeistheCatholic Church,andoursnotapartof theCatholicChurch,beCausenot incommunionwithRome," Newmaninformedhim.(Shane Leslie,HenryEdwardManning,p.59).Manningwroteto Gladstoneafewweekslater: "Newman'sletterhasdeeply movedme,andmademeyearn impatientlytobeatrest.He seemstotellmethatmyonly staythroughsixyearsofsorrow,weariness,andsolitudeis ashadow.Alltheworldmight sayit,andIshouldcareless thantohearitfromhim."

AnglicanTheology

NoLongerSatisfies

Anglicantheologywasno longersatisfyingtoManning.In 1846hewrote:"Thereseems abouttheChurchofEnglanda wantofantiquity,system,fulness,intelligibleness,order, strength,unity YetIhave nopositivedoubtsaboutthe ChurchofEngland.Ihavedifficulties,butthechiefthingis thedrawingofRome.Itsatisfies thewholeofmyintellect,sympathy,sentiment,andnature,in awayproper,andsolelybelongingtoitself."Ayearearlierhe hadwritten:"Itseemstome inevitablethattheremustbea trueandexactintellectualtraditionoftheGospel,andthat theScholastictheologyis suchatradition.Wehaverejecitsplace."

Fromtheyear1847onthereis asteadydevelopmentofhis realizationoftheinsufficiencyof theChurchofEnglandandthe stabilityoftheCatholicChurch. Buttheincidentthatseemedto settlehismindwasthefamous Gorhamjudgment.GeorgeC. GorhamhadbeenanAnglican ministerfor36yearswhenhe wasnamedbytheLordChancellortoanewliving.Bishop HenryPhilpottsfoundupon inquirythatGorhamdeniedthe doctrineofbaptismalregenerationandrefusedhimtheliving. Gorhamappealedandwas upheldbytheJudicialCommitteeofthePrivyCouncil. FollowingthisflagrantinterferenceoftheStateinChurch affairs,Manningmovedquickly. InNovemberofthatyearhe arrangedtoresignhischarge intheChurchofEngland.His finalseparationcameinalittlechapelofftheBuckingham Palaceroad."Iwaskneelingby thesideofMr.Gladstone,"he toldlater."Justbeforethe Communionservicecommenced, Isaidtohim,'Icannolonger takethecommunioninthe ChurchofEngland.'Iroseup and,layingmyhandonMr. Gladstone'sshoalder,said, 'Come.'Itwasthepartingofthe ways.Mr.Gladstoneremained; andIwentmyway."

Thevague,unorganizedcharacterofEvangelicalism,despite itspietisticintensity,wasgraduallyfailingtosatisfyhim,however,andinasermondelivered inJune,1838,hefirstshowed signsofHighChurchleanings.
