ThePopesinmoderntimeshavecriticisedourcivilisationanditssocialstructures,andhavecalleduponnations andtheirrulersforachangeofheartasanecessarypreliminaryforthere-establishmentofChrist'sKingdomthrough justiceandcharity.ThereigningHolyFather,aseven thecablesattest,issettingthefear-wrackedworldamost movingexampleofprayerandpenance,bywhich,inferentially,isindicatedthattheworldispossessedofanevil spiritwhichwillnotbeexorcisedbutbysuchmeans.Meantime,thesecularisedworldhasadoptedforaslogan: "Businessasusual."Andthatpreciselyisthetragicoutlookwhichmakesbothwarandtheultimatepeaceseemso futileandunavailing.Thosetwospheresofreality-the spiritualandthesecular-willcarryonbusinessasusual. TheChurchmustbusyitselfahundredfold,becauseinadditiontothemyriadspiritualevilswhichflourishto-day, theredevolvesuponitaswelltheterriblebutnecessai:iduty ofreparationtothemajestyofGod.
Andthesecularworldwillcarryonasusual.The corruptionofpubliclife,socialinjustice,andtheneverendingcycleoffollieswhichpivotabouttheliberalphilosophy,willbeperpetuatedandevenentrenched.There isnoindication,eventhesmallest,thatthesetwoworldswill impingetheoneupontheother.Noreasonablehopecan beentertainedthattheoutcomeofthisstruggle(whatever themoraljustificationofitsorigins)willensurethesolid impactoftheChristianwayofthoughtandoflifeuponour secularisedcivilisation.Before,during,andaftertheSecondWorldWarthedechristianisedsocietiesofourtimes carriedonbusinessasusual-thesameoldbusinessinthe sameoldway.Itisnotthatitdeniestheexistenceor eventhetruthofthespiritualorder.Butitdeniesthe rightofthespiritualtoaprimacyofauthorityoverthe secularsphere.Itsoutlookis"departmentalised."Itsees, notonereality,buttwo-unrelatedandincompatible.Religion,itclaims,isprobablyallrightsofarasitgoes,butit mustnotgointotherealmofthepracticalaffairsofpoliticsandeconomics.

Thedramatizationofthe Masswasdonebythepupilsof St.Columba'sschoolNov.12 beforeacrowdedaudiencein theparishhall.Eachclassin theschoolparticipatedinthe presentation.Theveryyoung childrenpreparedthealtarand spoketheirlineswiththeassuranceofexperiencedactors.The lowergradestookthevestmentsonebyone,showed them,andteldtheirparentsthe history,thesymbolism,andthe useofeach.Theexplanationof thecolourswasveryeffectiveas thechildrenheldupthechalice veilsandspoketheirlines.
Themiddlegrades,inexcel_ lentverse-speakingtechnique, wentthroughtheactionofthe Massaccordingtothe33"steps" of"PraytheMass,"theschools' text-book.Itwasadelightto listentotheirwellmodulated andyouthfulvoices,speaking theirpartswithobviousenthusiasm.
Thegirlsoftheseniorgrades taughtindramaticformtheplan oftheCanonanditsprayers. Eachgirlhadalargeposter withthenameofthepart ononesideandtheopening wordsoftheLatinprayeron theother.Thegirlswerearrangedintwosectionsoneach sideofthealtaronthestage.

BornofIrishparentsinAlexandria, Victoria,in1875, "Arthur,"ashewasaffectionatelyknowntoall,cameWestasa youngmaninsearchofgold.He marriedMissNellieVowelsin thepresentCoolgardiechurch towardstheearlypartofthis century.
AkeensportsmanandenthusiasticsupporteroftheCoolgardieRifleteam,hemadethetrip toPerthtowitnesstheKings CupshootatSwanbourne.After asuddenheartattackhewas takentohospitalinPerthwhere hedied,fortifiedbytheritesof theChurch.

TherethegreatNebuchadnezzar, conqueroroftheIsraelites,lived inregalsplendour.There,too, livedDanieltheprophet-asa slave.Itwasinthiscitythat theblasphemousBelshazzarsaw thewritingonthewall-Mene, Tekel,Upharsin.
CliffordHamey,ofQueensland,hasconstructedaplay aboutBabylon.Thisplaywon himtheZ50prizeofferedby theTheatreCouncilofW.A. HistorywasmadeintheAs_ semblyhalllastweek,whenfor thefirsttimeinWesternAustraliaanAustralianprize-winning playwasgivenaspecialpremiere.Lastyear'swinning play("LifeBurnsOn")wasincorporatedintheannualDrama festivalconductedbytheTheatrecouncil.
Rathernaturallytheauthor chosethewritingonthewallas thepiecederesistanceofhis plot.Everyoneknowsabout thisfamousincident,and,dramatically,ithaspossibilitiestoo obvioustoignore.'Intheplay itisusedasthematerialforthe crisis.
Thiscrisiswaswellmanaged-withtheaidof"spots"and grouping;infact,itwasfaintly reminiscentofthebetrayalof JesusattheLastSupper.There wastheroisteringBelshazzarcertainlynocounterpartof Christ,butstillthecentre-
piece-withthechaliceraisedto hislips,andthesycophants(insteadofthedisciples)rangedon eithersideofhim.Therewas ablindingflashasBelshazzar utteredhisdefiance,andina momenteverybodyhadfallen intoasetposition,withBelshazzar,aboveall,staringatthat messageofdoomonhiswall.
Butwhenwehaveallowedfor somemomentslikethis-generallyspeaking,the'curtains" weregood-wehavetoreflect thattherewerelongstretchesof aridityintheplay.Itwasan unevencomposition,aswesaw it.Thecharacteroftheacting wasamateurish.JackGibbings,whoplayedCleotes,was anotableexception.Heinfusedfireandadegreeofcertaintyintohiswork,andheimmenselyaidedDixieGeddes, whoplayedoppositehim.

Inthefirstplace,itwastoo ambitious.Foritsfullunfoldingitrequiredalargercanvas thantheAssemblyorthecast wereabletogiveit.Onthe purelyvisualsidethesettings wereapoorsubstituteforthe grandeursofBabylon,andthe costumesratherresembledneck_ to-kneebathersthananythingelseIcanquicklythinkof.But eventhesedisadvantagesmay havepassedfunnoticedifthe casthadbeenequaltothetask of phere.creatingthenecessaryatmosTheyweren't, Lackingatmospheretheplay stumbledonitsdownwardpath.Actorswalkedonandactors walkedoff;butthesmallaudiencewassilent,unconvinced. Theactorsweretalking,ina languagewhichpeopleofthe 20th.centuryfounddifficultto absorb(whentheycouldhear it)-blankverse. Shakespearewroteinblank verse,butitwastheaccepted languageofhisday;andShakespeareadornedmuchofhis blankversewithstrikingand beautifulimagerywhichhasbecomefamiliartous.Evenso, thereismuchofShakespeare thatdoesn'tgooverto-day;how muchmoredifficultisitforCliffordHamey?
Thesuccessfuldramatistwrites forthepeopleofhisownday. Thatisasimpletruthwhich mustneverbeneglected.Drama isclosetothelifeofthepeople. Onerecalls,regretfully, thatwhentheCatholicTaxpayers'associationwasfunctioningactivelysome10 yearsago,theAnglicans adoptedadog-in-the--manger attitude.Althoughtheclaim madeonthegovernmentwas notexclusivelyforCatholic schools,butforallschools maintainedforconscientious reasons,theAnglicanand othernon-Catholicbodiesresistedit.Thistheydidpresumablyeitherbecausethe numberoftheirownprimary schoolswassmall,orbecause theyfeareditwouldplacethe Catholiceducationsystemin
