A.:Undertheguiseofasking aquestion,youhavesucceeded inmakingagrosslyexaggerated statement.Itisnottruethat thereare"agreatnumberof featurespertainingtooldpagan religions"intheCatholicreligion.Whatistrueisthatthe Churchhaspermittedtheuseof certainritesandpracticeswhich wereoriginallyofpaganorigin. Thepagan,letussuppose,is deeplyconsciousofthepresence ofevilintheworld.Hemay haveverystrangeandwrong ideasofthenatureoftheevil influences.Buthehasone verysensibleidea,namely,that somethingoughttobedone abouttheseevilinfluences.He inventssomesymbolicriteto whichheattributesefficacy againstevil.Perhapshemisconceivesthemodeofactingof thisrite.Hemayattributesome magicpowertothesymbolitself. That,ofcourse,isanerror,but sinceitisjustexactlythesame errorasthemodernrationalist makesaboutChristiansacramentsandsacramentals,perhapsweshouldnotbetoohard onthepoorpagan.Whatisfar morelikelythanthatthepagan thinkshissymbolicactionworks bymagic,isthathebelieves that,byhisaction,heappeals tohisgodtotakeactionagainst thepowersofevil.Thatwould beaveryreasonableattitudeto take.

Tojudgefromyourstatement, onewouldthinkthattherewas somethingobscureabouttheoriginoftheCatholicChurch.That, ofcourse,isperfectlyuntrue. Weknowexactlyhow,when, andwheretheCatholicChurch wasfounded.Itsdevelopment sinceitsorigin,somenineteen
