God'sKnowledgeofFutureEvents

DoesnotDestroyMan'sFreeWill

comesfrom"H.A.D,"Heasks:

Wouldyoupleasetellmehow wearetoreconcileGod'sforeknowledgewithman'sfreewill?

A.:Yourquestioncanbeansweredwithvaryingdegreesof completeness. Iproposethis eveningtogivearatherbrief answer, whichIthinkwillcover theaspectsofthequestionin whichyouarelikelytobeinterested.Ifthereissomeparticulardifficultyregardingthis questionwhichyouwouldlike tohavesolvedandwhichisnot metbytheanswerIgivethis evening,Ihopethatyouwill writeandletmeknow.

Theelementsoftheproblem arethese.Wearecertainboth fromreasonandfromrevela_ tionthatGodknowseverything. Includedinthat"everything" arealltheactions,freeorotherwise,ofallHiscreatures.In particularGodknowsalltheactionsofmen,past,presentand future,andHeknowseachof themwithinfalliblecertainty. Ontheotherhand,itisjustas certainthatinmanyofhisactionsmanisfreetochoose.We knowthisfactbothfromour ownexperienceandfromrevelation.Thedifficultysuggests itself.IfGodknowseverythingthatIameverygoingto do,thenImustinfalliblydojust whatGodknowsIamgoingto do,andinrealityIamnotfree tochooseonecourseratherthan another.Theconclusionisobviouslywrongandsuggestsareexaminationofthepremisses.

Thefirstquestionthiseveningldokofaplatitude,butitisa platitudewhichhasbeenoverlookedbythinkersinthepast Totakeonlyoneexample,there ishardlyanythingmoreimmediatelyevidentthanthatour meansofknowledgeputusin ccntactwithreality.Yet,becausesomethinkerswereun_ abletosolvethedifficulties whichthisclearlyestablished factgives'riseto,theyhavepre- ferredtodenythefactandcommitmentalsuicide.Ourinabilitytoexplainthe"how"of anythingisnoreasonfordenyingthefact,ifthefactisfirmly established.Itwouldbejustas sensibletodenythefactof gravitationalattractionbecause noonesofarhasexplainedhow materialbodiesattractoneanother.

ReasonCanSurmount

InherentDifficulties

However, inourcase, theobjectioncanbesolved.God's foreknowledgeexercisesno morecompulsoryinfluenceon thefreeactsofthefuturethan doesthepresentknowledgeof anobserveronaneventwhich heseeshappeninginthepre- sent.Thefutureactisnotthe effectofGod'sforeknowledge

butsimplyitsterm.In.fact, foreknowledgeofthefuturefree actofthewillnomoredestroys itsfreedomthanwouldtherecollectionofapastact. The followingwasoftenusedbythe FathersoftheChurchintheir explanationsofthispoint:"The fleeactsofthewilldonotcome topassbecauseGodforeknows them, butcontrariwise,God foreseesthembecausetheywill happen."

Thedifficultywhichwehave inunderstandingGod'sknowledgeofwhatisfuturecomes largelyfromthefactthatall ourthinkingisconditionedby time.Wecannotimaginethe modeofknowledgeofaBeing whoisoutsideoftime.We exist,asitwere,byinstalments, wehavewhatthescholastics callsuccessiveduration.God's durationisnotsuccessive,there isnobeforeandafter,HepossessesHisdurationindivisibly. (Henceeverythingthatforus, was,isorisyetasourknowledgestandstoobjectswhich arepresenttous.)Hisknowledge,therefore,isnotantecedentbutconsequent.Wesee thingsbecausetheyare.They donotexistbecausewesee them.Godknowsouractsof thefuture,becausetheywillbe. ItisnotbecauseHeknowsthem thattheywillbe.Theyare futureasregardspassingtime, buttheyarepresenttothediv_ ineeternity.

Theprogrammewascertainly notveryinspiring,butmaybe wecanhopeforbetterthings nextyear.
