Morethan2,500personsattendedthefunction;700ofthe childrenmarchedintheEucharisticprocessionaroundthehospitalgrounds.Thespacious lawnsweredottedwithprams andstrollersandgurgling, crawlingbabieshadthetimeof theirsweetyounglivesplaying onthegrass. Attimesthescenelookedlike aconventionofaMutualAdmiraLionsociety.Womenwho sharedthesameroomsome yearsagowerebroughttogether again.Babieswhowerenow grownintostrappingboysand girlsweredulyparadedandad-
mired-oftenmuchtothe youngsters'acuteembarrassment.
Masterpiecesofunderstatementwereheardoverthepublic addresssystem.Theannouncer wouldcalmlynotifyMrs.Soand-SothatJohnnyorBillywas withtherestofthechildrenat therearofthehospitaland wouldverymuchliketoseeher. Ifthetruthbeknown,teardrenchedJohnnybythattime wasblueinthefaceyellingbluemurderforhismother. Prideandsatisfactionwas writtenonthefacesofthenuns astheywatchedtheprocession. Theoriginalthreemembersof

Intimessocritical,suchfailureisamatterofvery greatmoment.Forintheabsenceofanagreedprogramme basedonCatholicsocialthought,thebestthatthoseofthe Faithwhoare.activeinpoliticscandoistosupportpartiallythesocialprogrammesofexistingpoliticalpartiesinsofarastheyseemconsonantwithprinciplesofjusticeand charity.Inevitablytherearepointsuponwhichtheycannotconcur.oronlywithelaboratemodifications.Insuch casesthereissetupastrainoffrustrationinnotbeingable wholeheartedlytosupportexistingorganisationsandof beingunablealsotoaspiretothecompleterealisationof Catholicideals.Thefruitsoffrustrationarefear,pus- illanimity.andperhapscompromise.
ThedilemmaofCatholicsactivelyengagedinpolitical lifedoesnot,however,giveafullandfinalexplanationof theCatholicfailuretoimplementitssocialideals.Byand largethereisgeneralapathytowardsorganisedpolitical actionwhichisperhapsasurvivaloffearfromtheslanders directedagainsttheChurchinthepastonthisscore.For allthat,itisagreatpity,forCatholicshavethesamepoliticalrightsasothercitizenswhoarenotintheleastinhibitedfromexercisingpressureinthepoliticalarenatoserve theirownends.Theclassicalexampleofthislethargyis theschools'question,whichhasbeenputasideunderthe pretextthatthereisnodesiretoembarrassgovernments. Asituationofintolerableinjusticeisthereby.maintained. Needlesstoadd,governmentsdonotsufferfromscruples aboutembarrassingCatholicparents,andnopoliticianwill movewithoutashove.
Thereisthelack,too,ofintermediateorganisationsbet tweettheindividualandtheState.Itispreciselyhere thatavastamountofworkcouldbedonewithoutdirect politicalparticipation.Inthefinalanalysisthetestof governmentonChristiancriteriaiswhetherithelpsor hindersfamilylife.Hence,itisreasonabletoexpectthat organisationsofparentsshouldhavealargesayinthe framingofgovernmentalpolicy.ThereisintheArchdioceseagrowingmovementtowardstheformationofsuch groups,anditisquiteopenlywithintheirprovincetomake representationstotherulingpowers.Thistheymaydo withoutfearorfavouronwhatevergovernmenthappensto beinoffice,withoutchargesofpartisanship.Itisonlyby somesuchactionthatthebonesofCatholicsocialtheory willheclothedinflesh.

Sixteen-year-oldpupilatthe
DeLaSalleCollege,Pendleton, Salford,LeonardJohnCrosbie, ofIrlam-o'-th'-Height,with £12inhispocket,hitch-hiked toRometomaketheHolyYear pilgrimage.
Ofthisnumber50losttheir lives,andtheremainderwere rescuedbyAmericanandAustralianforces.
One'partyofmissionaries, whichincludedfiveoftheseSisters,escapedandtrekkedthrough thedensejunglesforthree monthsbeforetheymettwo Australianprospectors,who guidedthemacrossthemountainstoaplaceofsafety'where theywereobservedbylowflyingAmericanplanes.
GeneralKenney,onbeinginformedoftheirplight,ordered theirevacuationbyairtothe coast.Here,togetherwithanotherpartyofrescuednunsfrom Hollandia,theywereembarked onashipandprovidedwitha fighterescortuntiltheyreached Australiasafely.
InDecember,1946,theLister hospitalwaspurchasedbythe SistersofthisCommunityand calledHolySpirithospital. Amongthefirstmembersofthe staffofthehospitalwerethe Sisterswhohadescapedfrom NewGuinea.Owingtotheincreasingdemandsforhospital accommodation,itisnowproposedtobuilda100-bedhospital onthepresentsite,whichwill bededicatedtotheAustralian andAlliedservicemenwhopaid thesupremesacrificeinthe Souht-WestPacificarea.
AtGeneralKenney'srequest, ithasbeendecidedthataward beallottedtowarveteransof Alliedcountries. Allbutfouroftherescued Sistershavereturnedtotheir junglemissionsinNewGuinea.

Quiterecently,anotherreligiouscommunity ofsistersarrivedinthisStatetocarryonaworkof compassion,thattheirfoundress,MotherMary JosephAubert,startedinJerusalem,NewZealand, in1892.
FaithandendurancewerethekeynoteofMother Aubert,andafamoussayingofherswas:"ProvidenceisMybankandithasneverfailedmeyet." Evenwhenhavingtofaceapressingproblem, MotherAubertwasneverworried,sheknewher faithwouldseeherthrough.
MotherAubert,andthe"SistersofCompassion"wereknown andlovedthroughoutthelength andbreadthofNewZealand,for theirtenderloveandcarefor theaged,thefoundlings,and sub-normalchildren.
Itwasagreatprivilegeforme tobeassociatedwithMother AubertandherSistersfora numberofyearsinWellington, andtohavehadtheco-operationofzealousworkerstoraise fundstohelpherbuildher mother-houseatIslandBay, Wellington.
Acompellingforceurgedme t.,)meetMotherAubert,asIwas soimpressedwiththewonderfulworkshewasdoing,andin themosthumbleway.WhenI calledattheconventafewdays later,Iwasgreetedverywarm_ lyby.agentlelittleladywitha strongforeignaccent,andapersonalitythatoneseldomencounters.Shetoldmeofher life'sworkandhowtheCure d'Ars,St.JohnVianney,with whomshewasassociated inFrance,advisedandguided herinherearlyyears.Itis recordedthatSuzanne'sparents wishedhertomarry.Shewas notagreeable.HermothercomplainedtotheCured'Arsofher disobedienceinnotconsenting tothemarriageproposedfor her.Thesaintlookedhardat Suzanneandsaid:"Youdowell

OnOct.1,1926,thissaintly womandiedattheageof91, andshereceivedthegreatest andmostinspiringfuneral,ever giventoawomaninNewZealand.
