MonsignorThomasarrivedin PerthMonday,Oct.9,onthe Stratheden."Alsoonboard weretheMostRev.PatrickJ. Farrelly,BishopofLismore;the MostRev.FrancisA.Henschke, BishopofWaggaWagga;the MostRev.ThomasM.Fox,BishopofWilcannia-Forbes;the Rev.E.Perkins,andabout60of thepilgrims.
MonsignorThomas'planswill havetobeendorsedbythe Hierarchypriortotheiradop- tion.He,however,hasno doubtsthatsuchpilgrimages woulddomuchtoputthe ChurchinAustraliabeforethe eyesoftheCatholicworld.On thepilgrimagestoLourdeshe hopestotakestretchercases also.
TheHolyYearpilgrimagecertainlyopenedpeople'seyes,he said.Peoplestoodandcheeredwhen700strongtheyparadedwiththeAustralianflagin thePiazzaofSt.Peterpriorto thePapalaudience.Themap ofAustraliaonthepilgrims' badgestoldpeoplewherewe werefrom,headded.
Notonlydidthepilgrimage opentheeyesofthosepartici- patingtothesplendour,Catholicity,andhistoryoftheChurch butitalsogavethem aninsightintothesacrificesof thosewhowereresponsiblefor thespreadingofthefaith.The catacombsmadethemrealise,he said,howfortunatewearein
havingourfaithpreservedand protectedforus;openedtheir eyestothesmallnessofthesacrificeswehavetomakeforthe faithinAustralia.
LookinginvainforCatholic schoolsontheContinentthe pilgrimsrealisedhowveryfortunatewewereinhavingsuch awonderfulbodyofself-sacrificingreligiousmenand womenwhostaffandrunour Catholicschoolsystemwhich, intheMonsignor'sopinion,is secondtononeintheworld.
Thepilgrimagewillhavean impactontheCatholiclifeof thenationhesaid.AtLourdes, Fatima,andLisieuxmanyof thepilgrimsstayedupallnight prayingattheshrines.
AtLisieuxMonsignorThomas accompaniedtheMostRev.J. Duhig,archbishopofBrisbane, toCarmel.Heretheymet MotherAgnes(Pauline)the "LittleMother"oftheLittle Flower.Themonstrancewhich wasusedatthesolemnBendictionwastheonewhichSt.Theresecaredforwhenshewas sacristanintheconvent.
Oneofthemoststriking thingsaboutthereceptiongiven byHisMajestyinEnglandWas thekeeninterestshownbythe KingandPrincessMargaretin theHolyFather.Theyaskedif thePopewaswell,howwashe standinguptothestrainofthe HolyYear,andmanyotherintimatequestionswhichrevealed adeeppersonalinterestandaffectionforthePontiff.

October4,thedayforthefirstSouth-West ConventInterschoolsports,wasmarredbywindy andsquallyweather.Neverthelessitdidnot dampentheardourofthecompetitorsfromthe competingschools-Manjimup,Dardanup,Donnybrook,MargaretRiver,Waroona,Harvey,Collie, SacredHeart,Bunbury;St.Joseph's,Bunbury;and SouthBunbury.
Thecompetitionforthevariouseventswasverykeen throughoutthewholeoftheprogramme.
Thetimesrecordedwereslow owingtotheadverseweather conditions.Themostspectaculareventofthedaywasthe grandmarch,whichwasablaze ofcolour,withtheschoolsin theirvariouscoloureduniforms. ThiseventwaswonbytheSacredHeartconvent,Bunbury. Theconventschoolsfromthe distantplaceslikeManjimup, MargaretRiver,Waroona,Collie,andHarvey,aretobecongratulatedontheirwonderful responsetotheinitialprogramme. The"J.Monaghanmemorial trophy"isabeautifulcup,and theorganisersextendtheirBrat_ itudetoMrs.Monaghanforher assistance.Areplicaofthe cupwasdonatedbyMr.L.Freeman,ofBunbury;thereplicais keptbytheschoolwinningthe maintrophy.

Whenthereligiousceremonies hadended,memberswereentertainedathightea.Mr.S. Chidlow,whohasrecentlyreturnedfromthepilgrimageto Rome,gaveagraphicdescriptionofhisvisittoRomeand otherfamousshrines.
TheRev.J.Lynch,diocesan chaplainofthesociety,also spoke.Hestressedtheroleof theHolyNamesocietyinthe fightagainsttheforcesofevil. Hehopedtoseeagreatincrease inmembership,particularly amongyoungermen.
Mr.C.Berry,diocesanpresident,thankedtheVeryRev.T. Lenihan,parishpriestofNortham,andhisassistant,theRev. T.Phelan,fortheinvitationto attendtheregionalrally.
Membersofthediocesan executivealsovisitedYork earlierintheyear.Although notstrongnumerically,this branchevidencedrefreshingenthusiasm,whichwillattract moremembers.
Underlyingtheprogressofthe
society,FatherLynchstated, duringtheweek,thatithad beennecessarythisyeartocon_ ductthreeenclosedretreatsto copewiththenumberofapplicants.Thesewereinauugrated twoyearsago,andhavehelped thesocietyconsiderably.He thankedthe Redemptorist FathersandBrothersformakingtheirmonasteryavailablefor theretreats.
Thevariousbranchesofthe societyarebusyorganisingfor theannualdiocesanrallyofthe HolyNamesociety,whichwill beheldatAquinascollege,Oct. 29.Eachbranchisexpectedto arrangeitsowntransportandto ensureafullattendance.

Tenplanes,oneforstretcher casesonly,took200invalids fromDublintoLourdesrecently,Theywerepartofa900strongdiocesanpilgrimageled byArchbishopMcQuaid,of Dublin. Therewasadoctorineach plane,and25nursesaccompaniedthepilgrims.

About400pilgrimsareexpec- tedtotakepartinthepilgrimagewhichwillvisitthechurchesatInglewood,Maylands, theCathedral,andSacredHeart, Highgate.

Asolemnwarningtoflower-loverswasissued duringtheweekbytheRev.BrotherW.T.McGee, superiorofCastledareJuniororphanage.Onno account,saidBrotherMcGee,shouldtheyattend theorphanagefielddayonOctober22,asperils lurkedbehindeveryshrubinthespaciousgrounds.
AskedtoelucidatethedangersofCastledare'shorticulture, BrotherMcGeeexplainedthata systemofcompetitivegardening hadbeensetafootamonghis youngcharges.Fourteams cultivatedgardenplots,andthe rivalryengenderedoccasionally borderedonclasswarfare.The keennessoftheladswassuch thatplantsintheBrothers'gardenhaddevelopedaremarkable over-nightmobility.Events quiteoutsidetheorderofnature werecommonoccurrencesat Castledare;forexample, a sturdycarnationflourishingat duskinthecommunityplot wouldbefoundgrowingunblushinglyinthesmallboys' gardenatday-break.Nonaturalexplanationofthesephenomenacanbeadduced.

Moreover,whentheintellectisnotactivelyengaged, thelowersegmentsofthe mindrovefreelywithoutrestraint.Whatwouldnormally.beregardedasamor-' bidfancyordesire,easily pushedaside,beginstogrow inthefascinationofisolationandsecrecy.Itisfrom thesemorbidandsustained imaginings,wilfullyencouragedandprotractedtothe pointofhabit,thatbaseness ofactbeginstospring.It leavessocietyatthemercy ofperhapsalargenumber who,fromtheverysecrecy oftheirprurientpleasures, areunpredictableinaction.

Itisatleastundeniable thatpulpliteratureofthe pseudo-romantictype,of nudistorganisationsandallegedhealthcultures,isreapingaheavyharvestofhavoc amidthespiritualhealthOf ouryouth,particularlyof those(andtheirnameis legion)whohavenoreligiousanchor.Thereareeven shopsinthiscitywhichspecialiseinthedisseminationof filth,andtheyareaninfinitelygreaterdangertoour countrythanthecafeswith thecrackedcupsandthe horseflesh.Theinactionof ourlegislatorsinthefaceof thisthreatisinexplicable. Afinalobjectiontothefamily Rosaryisthattherepetitionof thesameprayersismonotonous.IntheRosary,asinall thingsworth thereisthe letterandthespirit,thebody andthesoul.Thevocalprayers,theHailMary,theLord's prayer,andtheGlorybetothe Fatherarethebody,butthesoul oftheRosaryliesinthemeditation.
AstheRosaryisaprayerfor everyperson,thereforeameditationmustbewithinthecapacityofeveryone.Thereare threedegreesofdevotiontothe Rosary,allofthemacceptable toMary.Thefirstisjustsayingthevocalprayerswhile passingthebeadsthroughone's fingers.Bydoingthislipsand tongueandfingersarededicatedtoMaryinprayer.This maysoundmechanicalandroutine,butwhatheavenlywords tokeeponrepeating!Wecannotimagineanyhumanintellectgivingusthewordsofthe Lord'sPrayerandtheHail Mary!TheHoly,Holy,Holy oftheangelicchoirsinheaven neverwearytheangelsbecause theirheartsareinit.Here, then,isadevotiontotheRosarywhicheventheyoungest childcanpractise.
