ThattheAustralianHolyYearpilgrimagewas asuccessisshownbytheboldplanofitsnational organiser,theRt.Rev.Msgr.A.R.Thomas,toorganisesimilarnationalpilgrimagestoLourdesand otherfamousshrinesinEurope.

MonsignorThomasarrivedin PerthMonday,Oct.9,onthe Stratheden."Alsoonboard weretheMostRev.PatrickJ. Farrelly,BishopofLismore;the MostRev.FrancisA.Henschke, BishopofWaggaWagga;the MostRev.ThomasM.Fox,BishopofWilcannia-Forbes;the Rev.E.Perkins,andabout60of thepilgrims.

MonsignorThomas'planswill havetobeendorsedbythe Hierarchypriortotheiradop- tion.He,however,hasno doubtsthatsuchpilgrimages woulddomuchtoputthe ChurchinAustraliabeforethe eyesoftheCatholicworld.On thepilgrimagestoLourdeshe hopestotakestretchercases also.

TheHolyYearpilgrimagecertainlyopenedpeople'seyes,he said.Peoplestoodandcheeredwhen700strongtheyparadedwiththeAustralianflagin thePiazzaofSt.Peterpriorto thePapalaudience.Themap ofAustraliaonthepilgrims' badgestoldpeoplewherewe werefrom,headded.

Notonlydidthepilgrimage opentheeyesofthosepartici- patingtothesplendour,Catholicity,andhistoryoftheChurch butitalsogavethem aninsightintothesacrificesof thosewhowereresponsiblefor thespreadingofthefaith.The catacombsmadethemrealise,he said,howfortunatewearein

havingourfaithpreservedand protectedforus;openedtheir eyestothesmallnessofthesacrificeswehavetomakeforthe faithinAustralia.

LookinginvainforCatholic schoolsontheContinentthe pilgrimsrealisedhowveryfortunatewewereinhavingsuch awonderfulbodyofself-sacrificingreligiousmenand womenwhostaffandrunour Catholicschoolsystemwhich, intheMonsignor'sopinion,is secondtononeintheworld.

Thepilgrimagewillhavean impactontheCatholiclifeof thenationhesaid.AtLourdes, Fatima,andLisieuxmanyof thepilgrimsstayedupallnight prayingattheshrines.

AtLisieuxMonsignorThomas accompaniedtheMostRev.J. Duhig,archbishopofBrisbane, toCarmel.Heretheymet MotherAgnes(Pauline)the "LittleMother"oftheLittle Flower.Themonstrancewhich wasusedatthesolemnBendictionwastheonewhichSt.Theresecaredforwhenshewas sacristanintheconvent.

Oneofthemoststriking thingsaboutthereceptiongiven byHisMajestyinEnglandWas thekeeninterestshownbythe KingandPrincessMargaretin theHolyFather.Theyaskedif thePopewaswell,howwashe standinguptothestrainofthe HolyYear,andmanyotherintimatequestionswhichrevealed adeeppersonalinterestandaffectionforthePontiff.

Despitethefactthatmanyof thepilgrimswereelderly,there hadbeenveryfewcasesofsickness.ThomasCookandSon haddoneamagnificentjobin organisingtheitinerary,hestated.Anyhitchesthatdidoccur wereduetothehotelsnotkeep_

ingtotheiroriginalcontracts,, nottoCook's.

Therewereseveralcasesof pilferingofmoneyandarticles frommembersofthegroup. Thiswasparticularlysoin Rome,whereBishopHenschke hadhispectoralcrossstolen fromhishotelroom.Whenthe HolyYearcommitteeheardof thistheygavehisLordshipan-, otherone.

OnSunday,Oct.8,S.I.C.1st.XVIII.,accompaniedbyeveryotherboarderatthecollege,travelledtoCalingiritoplaythegrandfinalagainst thelocalteam,whowereminorpremiers.Calingirihadplayednotablywellduringtheseason, butexcelledthemselvesinthegrandfinal.

Morethan150carsandtrucks linedthefootballfieldinthe Calingirishowgrounds,andthe 700-800peopleexpected a mightytussle.

Asprinklingofmembersfromoutlying districtsattended.ThementookpartinaprocessionoftheBlessedSacrament,afterwhichthe occasionalsermonwasgivenbytheRev.D.Lenihan,parishpriestofCunderdin.Membersofthe diocesanexecutiveofthesocietytravelledtoNorthornforthefunction.

Whenthereligiousceremonies hadended,memberswereentertainedathightea.Mr.S. Chidlow,whohasrecentlyreturnedfromthepilgrimageto Rome,gaveagraphicdescriptionofhisvisittoRomeand otherfamousshrines.

TheRev.J.Lynch,diocesan chaplainofthesociety,also spoke.Hestressedtheroleof theHolyNamesocietyinthe fightagainsttheforcesofevil. Hehopedtoseeagreatincrease inmembership,particularly amongyoungermen.

Mr.C.Berry,diocesanpresident,thankedtheVeryRev.T. Lenihan,parishpriestofNortham,andhisassistant,theRev. T.Phelan,fortheinvitationto attendtheregionalrally.

society,FatherLynchstated, duringtheweek,thatithad beennecessarythisyeartocon_ ductthreeenclosedretreatsto copewiththenumberofapplicants.Thesewereinauugrated twoyearsago,andhavehelped thesocietyconsiderably.He thankedthe Redemptorist FathersandBrothersformakingtheirmonasteryavailablefor theretreats.

AgreatmanyabsurdnotionshavedevelopedandpersistedsincetheReformationinregardtosuchelementary Christianpracticesasareuniversallyobservedduringthe seasonofLent.Inthematterofthefastandabstinence, someimaginethattheChurchhasasortofManichaean dreadofmeatandthatitwouldbemoretothepointto commandabstinencefromintoxicatingdrink.Yetthe purposeoffastingandabstinenceistoforbidsomething whichthemajorityofhersubjectswillmiss.Practically everybodyeatsmeat,whereasnotall,byanymeans,drink intoxicants.Sq,bypenance,theChurchunitesallCatholicsinacommonactofmortificationwhichis,atthesame time,intendedtobereparativeforthemanysinsofselfindulgencecommittedthroughtheappetitesofthebody. OthersarepuzzledthattheChurchshouldlegislateinso sublunaryamatter,whenhermagisteriumshouldbeconfined,itseemstothem,topurelyspiritualthings.These arethecriticswhotreatreligionasthoughitappliedprincipallytopureanddisembodiedspirits,whereas,actually, manisacompositebeing,havingtherelationsofbodyand soulintimatelyinterconnectedandtoalargeextentinterdependent. OthersarepuzzledthattheChurchshouldlegislateinso sublunaryamatter,whenhermagisteriumshouldbeconfined,itseemstothem,topurelyspiritualthings.These arethecriticswhotreatreligionasthoughitappliedprincipallytopureanddisembodiedspirits,whereas,actually, manisacompositebeing,havingtherelationsofbodyand soulintimatelyinterconnectedandtoalargeextentinterdependent. Itisusualwithacertain typeofmadliberaltodefend anythingthatcomesfromthe pressinthenameoffreedom;todubanykindof censorshiporevencontrolas anindefensibleattackonliberty.Theyclaimthateven openfilthwill'hotaffectthe "adultmind."Thatisthe psychologicalabnormality bornofthedenialofOriginal Sin.Forthepointatissue inthismatteristhatthepictorialrubbishthatclutters thebookstallslikeweedsis itselfevidenceofthescarcity ofadultminds.Whenmen losethepowerofconcentratedthoughtwhichisdevelopedbyseriousreading, theyreturn,likechildren,to thebooksofcolouredpictures.

WhyNotSuppressAll PervertersofYouth?

Moreover,whentheintellectisnotactivelyengaged, thelowersegmentsofthe mindrovefreelywithoutrestraint.Whatwouldnormally.beregardedasamor-' bidfancyordesire,easily pushedaside,beginstogrow inthefascinationofisolationandsecrecy.Itisfrom thesemorbidandsustained imaginings,wilfullyencouragedandprotractedtothe pointofhabit,thatbaseness ofactbeginstospring.It leavessocietyatthemercy ofperhapsalargenumber who,fromtheverysecrecy oftheirprurientpleasures, areunpredictableinaction.

ROME,Sept.25(Radio,NC).-Agrandtotal of146,240pilgrimsvisitedRomeandcontacted theCentralHolyYearcommitteeherebetweenthe 1st.and15th.September,accordingtofigurespublishedbythecommittee.

FatherPeytoniswelloversix feetandnoonewouldthinkby hisrobustframethatatonetime hislifewasdespairedof.I askedhimhowhethoughtof theplanofgettingthestarsof screen,stage,andradiotoput thefamilyRosaryontheair andbringtherecitationofthe RosaryintothehomesofU.S.A.

Knittinghisbrowsandspeaking inthesoftaccentoftheWest ofIrelandhetoldmethatwhen hewasfirstordainedheplannedtostartacrusadefordaily Mass.Thelongerheprayedand puzzledoverit,themorehebecameconvincedthatifheasked foreverythingatfirsthewould getnothing,whereasifhecould getpeopletosaytheRosary, theRosarywouldleadthemto theotherthings.

TheRosary,herepeatedagain andagain,isthebeginninginsisteduponbyOurLadyinher apparitionsatLourdesandat aumaforinherwisdomshe knowsthattheRosarywilllead ustootherthings.FatherPeyton hadvisitedEuropeandhewas convincedthatunlesswegot familiesprayingtogetherthere waslittlehopeforthepeaceof theworld.Tosaveourselves andtoconvertRussialetus beginfamilyprayers,prayed withinthehomecircle.Forthe Catholichometheidealprayer istheRosary.ThefamilyRosarygivesSatanacrushing blow,butwemustnevermake themistakeofthinkingthathe isdownandout.Satanisfar sighted.Hethinksalwaysin termsofultimatevictory.But hewillgodowninfinal,humiliatingdefeatifthefamilyRosarygrowsstrongerthroughout theyears.

TheRosaryisachainofthe mostperfectvocalprayers,the Lord'sPrayer,theAngelicsalu_ tationoftheHailMary,andthe praiseoftheHolyTrinityat theendofeachdecade.Beneath thosewordsslowlysaidliethe meditationsonthejoys,thesorrows,andthetriumphsofJesus andMary.Wewalkbeside themastheymovedthroughthe yearstheylivedonthisearth. Wetheirsharetheirstrengthand wisdom,learntheirpatienceandcatchtheirspiritof lovinggiving.Whatbetterlessonscanafamilylearnthan thoseopenedtousinourmeditationsonthemysteriesofthe Rosary?Whocanteachyour childrenbetterthanJesusand Mary?Takeforexampleselfishness,theworstofallfamily foes.Theboysandgirlsofafamilycannotremainselfishif thehomeperseveresinthe thoughtfulsayingofthefamily Rosary."Fightself,"saidSt. CatherineofSienna,'andyou needfearnootherfoe'."Saying theRosaryinthefamilycircle willvanquishselfishness. Thefamilythatpraystoge- therwillneverbedownhearted. Notthatprayerwillspareafamilyallpainandsuffering. Thatisthelotofman.And nevermoresothanintimes likethesewhenmenandtheir leadershavewanderedsofar fromGod.Butaprayingfamily willbepreparedtomeetallthe unavoidabletrialswhichcome itsway.Anditwillbespared theworsttrialsofall:those thatmembersofafamily inflictupononeanother.

SaytheRosaryaloudinyour familycircle.Giveyourminds thewidth,yourheartsthe depth,andyourspiritsthe heightthatcomesfromprayer. Unitethemembersofyourfamilyonetoanotherinthis strongestbondofcharity.And neverforget,husbandandwife, parentandchild,thatittakes threetostayinlove,youand theotherandGod!Thosewho loveoneanotherstayinGod's lovebyprayer.AndGod's answertotheirprayeristo keepthemalwaysinoneanother'slove.

Letuslookattheobjections tothefamilyRosary.Halfthe fathersandmotherswhohave talkedtomeaboutithave shruggedtheirshouldershelplessly.andSaidtheresimplydoes notseemtobeanytimeofthe daywhenallthemembersof thefamilycanbebroughttogetherinprayer.Theanswer tothatobjectionisthatthe eveningmealistherallying pointofthefamily,andimmediatelythemealisfinished, kneeldownaroundthetableand saytheRosary.Haveathand astatueorpictureofOurLady andenthroneheronthetableas Queenofthefamily.Doitat oncebeforedadsettlesdownto hispipeandpaper,beforethe oldermembersofthefamilygo out,andbeforemotherfusses overclearingthetable.

Ifanyoftheeldermembers ofthefamilyarenotpresent,or arereluctanttojoinin,saythe Rosarywiththosewhoarepresentandwhoarewillingtosay it.Soonerorlater,something willhappentomakeitpossible fortheotherstojoinin.The Rosaryislikethat.Giveita chance,anditwilltakecareof theproblems.TheMotherof Godcanhavewhatshewants fromherdivineSon,andone ofthethingsshewantsisRosaryfamilies. AnotherobjectiontothefamilyRosaryisthatthechildren aretooyoungandthattheycannotkeepquiet.Withthewis-

domthatGodgivestomothers, amotherwillhavethevery youngchildrensitthroughout theRosaryandtheotherchildrenwillsitupafterthefirst decade.Butallshouldhave thebeads,fortherustlingof thebeadsinthehandsofthe youngismusicinMary'sears, andshesmilesdownonthose childrenwhoareplayingwith thebeadsduringthefamily Rosary.Themothershould haveseveralsetsofbeadsto supplyforthemissingones.

Afinalobjectiontothefamily Rosaryisthattherepetitionof thesameprayersismonotonous.IntheRosary,asinall thingsworth thereisthe letterandthespirit,thebody andthesoul.Thevocalprayers,theHailMary,theLord's prayer,andtheGlorybetothe Fatherarethebody,butthesoul oftheRosaryliesinthemeditation.

DegreesofDevotion

ToRosaryAreGiven

AstheRosaryisaprayerfor everyperson,thereforeameditationmustbewithinthecapacityofeveryone.Thereare threedegreesofdevotiontothe Rosary,allofthemacceptable toMary.Thefirstisjustsayingthevocalprayerswhile passingthebeadsthroughone's fingers.Bydoingthislipsand tongueandfingersarededicatedtoMaryinprayer.This maysoundmechanicalandroutine,butwhatheavenlywords tokeeponrepeating!Wecannotimagineanyhumanintellectgivingusthewordsofthe Lord'sPrayerandtheHail Mary!TheHoly,Holy,Holy oftheangelicchoirsinheaven neverwearytheangelsbecause theirheartsareinit.Here, then,isadevotiontotheRosarywhicheventheyoungest childcanpractise. Theseconddegreeofdevotion istonamethemysteryandto intendtohonourit,eventhough onemaynotknowthewhole storybehindit.InthethirddegreeweaccompanyMaryduring thepeaksofher.lifewhereinshe sharedthejoys,thesorrows, andthetriumphsofherdivine Son.Wegetinsidethefeelingsandthethoughtsofour MotherMary.Thejoyfulmysteriesareabouttheinfancyand boyhoodofChrist.Thesorrowfulonestakeusfromthe GardenofGethsemanetothe tomb.Thegloriousmysteries inviteustosharethefruitsof thePassion.Allthesemysteriesareinexhaustiblemines fromwhichwecanextractgoldenthoughts,newideas,and helpfulmotivesthroughouta longlife.Themysteriesofthe Rosaryareeventsthatyield freshanddeepermeaningseach timewemeditateuponthem.

Anewspapermanofgreat abilityandwideexperiencein Americaacknowledgesthatthe re-makingofhimselfintoa finerpersonwasduetothis meditativesayingoftheRosary withinhisfamilycircle.He writes:
