Statisticsrecentlycompiledregardingthe workoftheCatholicClubforSeafarersreveal that,fortheyearendedJune30,1,516bedswere availedof,andthepresentdemandhasincreased 50percentoverthosefigures.Theclub,situatedat14QueenVictoria-street,Fremantle,wasestablishedduringthewaryearsbytheCatholicWelfareorganisation.AboutayearagoitsmanagementwastakenoverbytheSocietyofStVincent dePaul.

Aswithotherworksofthe society,theclubisconductedon non-sectarianlines.Duringthe yearseamenofallnationalities wereaccommodatedandentertained.TheseincludedBritish, Norwegians,Italians,Dutch, Goanese,HindustaniandPakistani,Malays,Chinese,and Greeks.Ofthesethegreater numberwerenon-Catholics.In arecentstrikeamongPakistani seamen,thedistressedsailors wereaccommodatedandgiven lightrefreshmentsattheclub.

Atthetimeofwriting,interestingguestsareacoupleof Australianseamenwho,when attemptingtolandstoresfrom JapanontheKoreancoastby L.S.T.landingbarge,were bombedandsunk.Theyhave recentlybeenrepatriatedfrom SingaporeandthePhilippines.

Sailorsoftheregularservice andmerchantseamenareadvisedoftheclub'sfacilitiesby membersoftheSt.Vincentde Paulsociety,whovisitmost shipswhicharriveinFremantleanddistributeliterature.

Amongtheclub'samenities, inadditiontoaccommodationof from10-15beds,isabilliards room,whereping-pongisalso played,andacanteenwhich sellstobacco,handygoodsand stamps.Distressedseamenare providedforfreeofcharge.

Yet-andthisdeservestobe notedespecially-herseriesof triumphsnevermadeherproud andoverbearing.SheregardedhervoiceasagiftfromGod, andmostofthemoneyfromher concertswasdevotedtocharity.

Thiscommonblackandwhite birdismuchlikeasmallmagpie.Itisabouttenandahalf inchesfromtiptotip. Itsfamiliarcall,"pee-wit," hasearnedforitthenamePeewit,whileitshabitofbuilding agrassnesthasgivenitthe name,mudlark. Thenestisgenerallyovalin shape,andverymuchlikea mudcap.Itisaboutsixinches acrossthetopinitswidestpart, andaboutfourandahalfinchesinitsnarrowest.Onsside ofthenest,thatonthewindwardside,isusuallyalittle higherthantheother.Theinsideofthenestislinedwith horsehair,finegrassandfeathers.Thenestisusuallybuilt nearawaterholeordam,and isplacedhighupinthebranch ofatree,welloutofthereach ofcats,whichareitsespecial enemy.Thepositionofthe nestmakesitsecureagainst wind.Attimesthenestis builtontheground.

Thefemalebird,whichhasa whitethroat,mayreadilybe distinguishedfromthemale, whichhasablackthroat.Three eggsareusuallylaidandwhen theyoungoneshatchtheparentshaveaverybusytime findinggrubs,worms,slugs, snails,grasshoppers,orotherinsectswithwhichtofeedthe babybirds.Themudlarkdoes goodworkforhumanbeingsby keepingdownflies,grubs, beetles,snailsandslugs,and variousinsects. Thesebirdsbecomefriendly andfrequentlyvisittheback yard,pickingupthecrumbs shakenfromthetablecloth.

Itismostnoticeablethat whenthemudlarkisdisturbed, ithasapeculiarflightina straightlineandflapsitswings strangely.

Theidealweatherconditions prevailingSept.30provedmost suitablefortheholdingofthe annualsportsoftheSacred Heartprimaryschool.Throughouttheafternoon,theatmospherewasoneofkeenexcitementastheprogressivescores showedhowevenlymatched werethefourcompetingteamsRed,Green,Gold,andBlue.

TowardtheendoftheJunior events,theyoungchildren. providedaveryinterestingflagdisplaywhichmetwiththeapprovalofthelargecrowdof parentsandfriendsgatheredin theassemblyhallandgrounds.

Followingthesecamethe racesfortheSeniorandJunior championships,whichwerewon byLynettedeMamiel.(Red team)andImeldaMoffatt(Gold team).

Somenoveltyandteamevents leduptotheJuniorgrand march,whichwascarriedout withanefficiencywhichwon enthusiasticapplause.

TheSeniorsandIntermediatesthenpresentedtheirdisplays ofphysicalexercisesfollowed byfolk-dancing.Thegirlsin theirattractivesportsuniforms andteamcoloursmadeavery strikinggroupandwonwellmeritedapplause.

Seniorteameventsoccupiedtherestoftheprogramme.The finalscoreswereveryclose, Blueteamwinningthecupfor theday.Thisteamalsowonthe shieldforthehighestpointsfor theyear.Thedistributionof prizesbytheRev.JohnWallace broughtthisveryenjoyableafternoontoaclose.

Thefourthand!finalyouth a concertof1950waseasilythe mostsuccessfuloftheseries fromthepointofviewofaudienceenthusiasm.ThePerth Symphonyorchestra,undertheir residentconductor,Rudolph Pekarck,presentedawell-balancedprogrammeofclassical "pops,"andthethousand-odd youngpeoplewhobravedthe elementstogoalongtothe CapitolonThursdaynight showedtheirappreciationinno meanfashion.Thesoloartist wasthevisitingDutchtenor, JustusBonn,andhewasrecalledseveraltimestotheplatform bytheenthusiasticapplause. Undoubtedlyagooddealofit wasduetothedesireofthe audiencetogetalittlemorefor theirmoney,butatanyrateit showedtheyhadlikedthedish.

Thesuccessofthelasttwo youthconcertsaugurswellfor thesubscriptionseriesnextyear (iftheA.B.C.decidestheventureisworthrepeating),butit wouldseemthatPerthhasstill alongwaytogobeforeit catchesupontheenthusiasmof theyoungpeopleoftheEastern capitals.Morethanoneperson hascommentedtomethatthere arethousandsofadultswho woulddearlylovetohearprogrammesofthetypepresented lastweek,andareonlydeterred fromattendingbythefeeling thattheywouldlookconspicuousinagatheringofyoungpeople,butitdoesseemapitythat welloverathirdoftheseatsin thetheatreshouldgobegging.

However,fromallaccounts,the audienceatthelastconcertwill allprovegoodambassadorsfor nextyear,andwemayyetseea full-bloodedresponseinPerth totheA.B.C.'seffortstointroducegoodmusictothenew generationofconcert-goers.

Theprogrammeopenedwith Beethoven's"Corialon"overture,sensitivelyconductedand wellplayed.Thestaccatochords followingthesustainedbarsat thebeginning,andrepeated laterinthework,werecrisply played,anditappearsthatthe precisionandgreaterattention totheconductorwhichIre-

markedattheGossensconcert, havereallycometostay.PersonallyIfelttherecouldhave beenawiderrangeofdynamics inthissection,andindeed throughoutthework,buthere weareupagainstthefactthat ourorchestra'sfortissimowithoutthehelpofthefullbrass sectionisstillpitifullyinadequate,andtheresultwouldno doubtbeinaudibilityatthe otherendofthescale.

"PavaneforaDeadIntanta," byRavel,openedinauspiciously withanunfortunatecontretempsinthehornsolo,but thereafterflowedsmoothlyand sonorouslyalongwithsome reallyexcellentworkfromthe woodwinds,anddelightfultone fromthemutedstringsection.

ThearrangementofDebussy's "ClairdeLune"wasanewone tome,anddidnotappealas wellastheStokowskionemore widelyknown,andInoticed thatthisitemreceivedrather lessapplausethandidtherest oftheprogramme.

JustusBonn'stwoariascame nextonthelist.Hesangfirst "ReconditaArmenia"andthen "ELucevanleStelle,"both fromPuccini'sopera,"La Tosca."Hisvoiceiswellproducedandofgoodquality,but helacksthefluidityandwarmth thatPuccinicallsfor.Theaudiencemadenosuchcarping criticism,anditmusthave warmedhishearttohearthereceptiontheygavehim.

Thefirsthalfoftheprogrammeconcludedwiththe "Facade"SuiteofWilliamWalton,andthewholetheatreenteredintotheinfectiousfun.

Oneofthetrumpetsappearedto beindifficulties,butWaltonhas alreadytakensuchlibertieswith thesonoritiesthatitdidn'treallymatter.

Afterintervaltheaudience wastreatedtoafullprogramme ofballetmusic,openingwith Tchaikowsky's"SwanLake" BalletSuite,delightfullyplayed andsensitivelyconducted.This wasfollowedbytheBallet MusicfromGounod's"Faust," and,finally,EdwardGerman's "NellGwynne"Dances.

CriticRates'TheParagon'aFinePlay

"TheParagon,"byR.andM. Pertwell,provedtobeanexcellentplay.Itwasproducedin theAssemblyHalllastnightby theIndependentPlayers.

Thestartwasauspicious.Curtainrisedisclosedasetwhich madeitdifficult,tobelievethat thehomely"flats"oftheAssemblyHallwereitsfoundation. Foroncetheyhadbeenpainted. Aparticularlygoodeffectwas achievedbypaintingacouple ofimitationbook-casesonto them-loftyaffairsfilledwith multicolouredvolumes.The furnishingsofSirRobertRawley'sstudywererestfulonthe eye,too.

SirRoberthimselfwasaninterestingcharacter,blindand hard-bitten.Hedominatedthe stagetotheextentthatwecompletelyforgothewasBertVickers. Icanpaynofinercomplimenttothisaccomplished actor.

EdnaIbbottwasimpressive asSirRobert'ssecondwife. Someofthescenesbetween themwereclassicexamplesof howthehusband-wiferelationshipshouldbehandledonthe stage.MissIbbottactswith authorityandrestraint.Her voiceiscaptivating.

SydneyDavisturnedinanothergoodperformanceasthe profligateson.Itfollowedthe linesofhissuccessin"TheShop atSlyCotner."Heshould watchthathisvoicedoesn'ttrail awayattheendofhissentences;therewasatendencyfor thistohappenonFridaynight.

Thedialogueint?ieplaywas delicious,andthewaytheplayershandleditwasacreditto theproducer,VernaJones.Reparteewasaprominentfeature throughout.

Alltheplayersdidwell, thoughthelovers,Maxwelland Angela,wereinneedofsome coaching.Theywerearather ill-assortedpair.KimRichards andMollyWorsnoptookthe roles.
