Church'sInfallibility

LeadstoConversion

FatherDudley'sconversion revolvedaroundthecentral pointoftheinfallibilityofthe church.ThoughhisEnglish educationhadthrownupbar- riersofprejudiceagainstthe CatholicChurch(evenhisfirst meetingwithaCatholicwas scarcelyencouraging-itoccurredwhenanolderboy,aCatholic,atschoolspatinhiseye), hisexperienceasanAnglican clergymansoonrouseddoubtsin hismind.

FindsContradictions InAnglicanDoctrines

Butwithtimethedifficulties increased-eachAnglicanminister,hefound,hadhisown ideaofChristianity."Asfaras authoritywasconcerned,itwas possibletobelieveanythingor nothingwithoutecclesiastical interference....IftheHoly Ghost,asclaimed,waswiththe ChurchofEngland,thenlogical_ lytheHolyGhostwasthe authorofcontradictions;for eachpartyclaimedHisguid- ance."

InhisstudyoftheChurch's claimtoinfallibilityhesawthat, "outsidetheCatholicChurch, Christiandoctrinesareamatter ofprivatejudgmentandthereforetheChristianreligiona merematterofhumanopinion."

ButtheCatholicChurch,"when shedefinesadoctrineoffaith ormorals,whenshetellsus whattobelieveandwhatto do-inaword,whattheChristianreligionis-then,andthen only,sheispreventedbyGod frommakingamistake,from teachinguntruth.TheChurchis God'smouthpiece,Hisvoice. InLegalSet-up

Alawcaseofquiteexceptionalinterestwasdecided recentlyinPerthbytheFull CourtofAustralia,whenthe decisionoftheChildren's Courtmagistrateregardinga neglectedchildwasupheld. Thestrangefeatureofthe casewasthatthesordidfeaturesconcerningthemother's conduct,whilenotaffecting theissueofthebaby's neglectinlaw,werehighly repugnanttoallconceptsof decency.Underthepreviouslegislationcoveringsuch mattersthereexistedtheastoundinganomalythata babyinarmscouldbe

Childrenare InnocentParties

OnthehistoricalissueI speaksubjecttocorrection, butIthinkthatthelegalinsufficiencesofthismatter ariselogicallyoutofthe abusesofthemarriagebond whichhavegrownupand widenedominouslyoverthe pastcentury.Itisnoteworthythattheinnocent partywhoiswrongedinall thesematrimonialentanglementsisinvariablythechild. amnotreferringtoactual physicalcruelty, buttothe moremonstrousevilofdenyingachildanormallifein hisownhome.Noinstitutioncansupplythatlack, andsomewarpofthenature ensuesforalltosee.

ChildrenHaveRights

If,inourdecadentsocial set-up,peoplemayenter light-heartedlyandirresponsiblyintothecontractof marriage,whichisreallythe touch-stoneofnationalsolidarity,theyshouldnotbe encouragedinthebeliefthat theycaneasilysheditsduties,particularlyinthematterofchildwelfare.Ifmaritalinfidelitymaybeadduced infavouroftheseculararm's dissolutionofthemarriage bond,surelyitshouldcarry thedoubledisabilityofbeing aninfringementoftherights ofoffspringtoastable,undividedhomelife.Obviously iftheselfishnessofmarried peopleissopronouncedthat thepartiesmayseek"freedom",thatisaveryconvenientandcare-freearrangement.Butmarriage,inits rationalandtraditionalconcept,isverymuchmorethan theunionandtheloveoftwo people.Itinvolvesthedes-

WhyNationsDie

Noadvocateofdivorceor ofanyothertinkeringwith themarriagebondhasbeen abletofaceuptoandanswer thepoignantobjectionofthe unwantedchild.Peoplewho donotwantchildren,either beforeorafterbirth,haveno righttotheprivilegesof marriage,becausetheywill notacceptitsresponsibilities.Vv-ittinglyorunwittinglytheyreducewhatisbotha naturalandasacredcontract toaconditionlittleremoved fromlicensedlust.Ifsuch aconditionbeginstocharacterisethesociallifeofanation,thatnationisinprocessofdisintegration.Itis childlessmarriagethatcauses nationstodie.Ifevera textofScriptureappliedasa radicaltestofnationalsurvivalitisthatwhichprophesiesthata"littlechild shallleadthem."

Theproposaltoenactin theStateParliamentlegislationforcompulsorytestsfor tuberculosisispartandparceloftheconcernofthepaternalStateforthephysical well-beingofitssubjects.Inasmuchastheprojectconcernspreventivemedicine,it mayhecommendedasaprogressivemove,buttheelementofcompulsioninthis respect,asinsomanyothers, seemsopentodispute.

Foronething,theprevalenceofT.B.isnotsogreat asmanyotherdiseases. Withoutrecentreferenceto statistics,Ifancythatdiseasesoftheheartconstitute thebulkofmortalityinthis country.But,ofcourse, tuberculosis,beinganinfectiousdisease,involvesmore thantheindividualsufferer.

Ifthegovernmentcanshow thatthenumberoftuberculosisvictimslooseinthe community, andnotunder treatment, isconsiderable, thecaseforcompulsion wouldbegreatlystrengthened.
