AglowingtributetotheworkoftheFranciscanFathersinMidlandJunctionwospaidlast Sunday,Sept.24,bytheArchbishop,whenheconfirmed90childrenandseveraladultsinSt.Brigid's churchthere.

"Withthemissionscryingfor moremen,"theArchbishop said,"theFranciscanshave indeedmadeageneroussacrifice insendingtheirmenhereto lookafterthespiritualwelfare ofthepeopleofMidlandJunction.Youcanthankthem,you canshowyourappreciationfor themarvellousworktheyare doingbyco-operatingwiththem ineveryway."

HisGraceaccompaniedbythe VeryRev.DeanJ.J.Rafferty andtheRev.J.P.O.Farrellpassedthroughaguardofhonour formedbytheparishionersto thechurchwherethechildren andtheirindivualsponsorswere alreadyassembled.

Despitethesolemnityofthe occasionthereweremanywide grinsonthefacesofthechildrenwhenHisGracetoldthem thattheycouldhaveaholiday inhonouroftheoccasionand warnedthemthattheywerenot tocometoschoolthenextday. Achoirofschoolchildren sangtheVeniCreatorandother hymnsandledthecongregation inahymntoOurLady.The ceremonywasclosedwithPontificalBenediction. Thosconfirmedwere:

Pendingprocurementofthe buildingpermit,thesocietycarriesonitsworkofcharityina condemnedbuildingonthesite whereCamillushousewillrise accordingtotheattractiveplans drawnbyMessrs.E.LeB. HendersonandThompson.With amembershipofonly150,remarkableresultshavebeen achieved.ThebuildinginBronte St..purchasedinJanuary,has beenusedasastoragedepot and4,000articleofclothing havebeendistributedfrom thereinthepasteightmonths.

Althoughthepresentbuildinghasbeencondemned,theremovalofunsightlytimberand ironshedshasimproveditsappearancegreatly,andthesociety'sprojecthasbeenwelcomed bythePerthCitycouncil.

Whenitscharitabledream hasbecomeareality,therewill benonecessitytocontinuethe presentmethodsofissuingbed.andmealtickets.Moreoverthe possessionofitsownShelter willenabletheSocietytowork moreeffectivelyintherehabilitationoftheirlessfortunatefellowmen.

Sincethesocietyworksonthe principlethatthetitleofthe poortoitscommiserationis theirpovertyitself,nodistinctionsofanykindaremadein itscharitableactivities.Noenquiriesastopartyorreligion arepermitted.Hence,thepro- jectisonewhichshouldappeal tothehumanitarianinstinctsof thewholecommunityanditis anticipatedthattherewillbea generousreponsetotheappeal fortheShelter.

Thepilgrimsweredrawn mainlyfromtheCathedraland EastPerthparishes.AssemblingatSt.Mary'sintheafternoon,theyentrainedwithout delayfortheChurchofthe QueenofMartyrs,Maylands.

TheRev.M.Ryanledthepil-. grimage,andasthebusestravelledbetweenchurches,the rosarywasrecited.Father Ryan,inabriefferverino,explainedthesignificanceofthe pilgrimage,whichwasatribute ofloveandloyaltytotheHoly Father.

TheChurchoftheSacred HeartHighgate,andSt.Joseph's church,Subiaco,werevisitedin turn,legionariesineachbus leadingtherosaryenroute.

ReturnedtotheCathedral, theprescribedprayerswere againrecitedtogtherwiththe HolyYearprayer.Benediction oftheBlessedSacramentwas thengiven.FatherRyanwas assistedbytheRev.R.Kelly.

CouldGod'svoicespeakuntruth? Protestantism,claimingtheHoly Ghostandpresentingajumble ofcontradictions,declares,ineffect,thatGoddoesspeakuntruth."

Theattemptedrefutationsof hisAnglicanfriendsimpressedhimnotatall.Afewisolated quotationsfromsomeofthe Fathers,takenoftenoutofcontextandalwaysquestionablyin-terpreted,seemednothingbeside thevastweightofwitnessesin histbryandTradition.Whyfit therocktothepebbleandnot thepebbletotherock,heasked.

Whytakehumanopinionon truthssovitalthatChristdeclaredtheymustbebelieved underpainofeternaldamnation? TheChurchmustbeinfallible whensheteachestruth,since truthisaninfalliblething.

Iftheworldisnotonepoliticallyandculturally,itisone fromthepointofviewofoffensivewarfare,eventotheultimatehorrorofbeingoneruin.AndtheAntipodes,as Mr.Menziesimplied,arenoexceptiontothegeneralrule ofruin.

Unfortunately,butunderstandably,thereistremendous publicapathyaboutdefence.Thesecondworldwar seemsscarcelytohaveendedwhenthesamegeneration,no longersoyoungandcertainlydisillusionedaboutheroics, iscalledupontostandbyagain.Perhapsthemostdis- hearteningfeatureisthesenseofbetrayalamongyoung men.TheNewOrderwhichwaspromisedispainfully likeacaricatureofthe01(1.TheFourFreedomsare notablyabsenteesfromtheworldscene.Andtheunprecedentedprosperitywhichwe.enjoy,howeverchimerical infact,ishardlypartedfrom.Inan.agewheretheem-5 phasicisonthematerialmenarenoteasilyweanedfromthe flesh-pots.HenceitisthatthereisaverywidedivergencebetweentheknowledgeandanxietyofthePrime Ministerandthetemperofthepublic.Itisquiteidle forthemaninthestreettomakedecisionsaboutwarstrategyandtheneedsofdefence,becauseheistalkingwithout realknowledgeinafieldwhererevolutionarychangesare constantlyinprogress.Itissupremelyamatterinwhich thepeoplemusttrusttheirleaders.

Thehiatusbetweentheanxietyofthegovernmentand theapathyofthepublicisonetowardsthebridgingof whichthePressmaymakeaninvaluablecontribution.That theissueisagraveonewasclearlydemonStratedbythe difficultyexperiencedinrecruitingthehandfulofmen wantedasatokenforceinKorea.Hence,nowthatenlistmentwillbeconditionaluponwarserviceinanypart oftheworld,wemayanticipateanextensionofcomplexity. Thegovernment,bygreatlyincreasingratesofpayandby providingbetterserviceconditions,hasmadetheobvious initialmovestostimulaterecruitment.Buttherealjob isthatofinfusingintothepublicarealsenseofthedangersofourtime,whileavoidingpanic.Thereisevidence also,thatemployersareloathetopermitemployeestoleave fornationalserviceatatimewhentheplumsofrestricted productionarereadytofallintothelapofinflateddemand. Here,obviously,isanissuewherethecommongoodmust bepreferredaboveanysectionalinterest. Itisimpr4sivethat,despitetheimpellingdemandsof defence,theFederalGovernmentshouldnothaveattempted tobreakthroughthetraditionalnationalobjectiontoconscription.Itisamatterofpridethatthefreemenofthis countryshouldnotbecoercedintodefendingtheirfreedom, butshouldacceptitvoluntarilyandwhole-heartedlyas theirrightandprivilege.Itseemsasafeconclusionthat morecanhegotfromAustralianmanhoodbyanappealto theirsenseofresponsibility.Admittedlytherearecomplexquestionsaboutwhereourouterdefenceperimeter lies.ThereisgeneralconvictionthatitliesinAsiarather thanEurope,butsuchdecisionsareafterallinthepro- vinceofexperts.Thelayopinionhereisnotofgreat value.UnderstandablythereispopularreluctancetocommitAustraliantroopstoundefinedoverseasservice.But, ontheotherhand,thescenechangessoswiftlyandthe manoeuvresoftheenemyaresounpredictable,thatdefinitionisdefied.Generallyspeaking,itseemssounderto meettheenemyanywherebutonourownsoil.

Ifthegovernmentcanshow thatthenumberoftuberculosisvictimslooseinthe community,andnotunder treatment,isconsiderable, thecaseforcompulsion wouldbegreatlystrengthened.

Butacardinalprinciplein regardtoallmeasuresof publiccompulsionisthat theymustbeactsoflastresort.Inthepresentinstance,canitbetruthfully saidthateveryencouragementhasbeengiventovoluntaryexamination?Ithink not.Truly,chestclinics existwherefreeX-rayexaminationmaybehad.But thefacilitiesandtheiradvantagesarenotwidelypublicised,andanybusinessman willattesthowmuchadvertisingisneededtocapture publicattention.Itseems tomethatuntilacomprehensiveandsustainedpublicitycampaignhasbeenundertakenandfailedthereisnot astrongcasefortheproposedcompulsion.

ROME,Sept.18(NC).-AmongthosepresentforthebeatificationoftheVenerableMaria DeMattias,Oct.1,willbethetwoItalianswhose cureisattributedtoherintercession.TheVenerableMariaisfoundressoftheSistersAdorersof theMostPreciousBlood.

Thecureshavereceivedthe approvaloftheSacredCongregationofRitesandconcluded theprocesswhichledtoher beatification.

Thefirstcurewaseffectedat Carbognano,Italy,onbehalfof Mrs.AdaNardocciPedica,who, April5,1934,hadfallenseriouslyillwithdoublebronchialpneumonia.Twodayslater, shegaveprematurebirthtoa childwhichlivedonlyafew days.Doctorsgaveuphopesfor herrecovery,buttheSisters Adorerssentanimageoftheir MotherFoundresstothehome recommendingprayerandconfidenceinherintercession.

Earlyonthemorningof April12,thesickwomanbeheld aSisterAdoreratthefootof herbedwhosmilinglytoldher shewascured.Thecurewas instantaneousandpermanent.

WhenheWas 14 years ofage,hewenttothe "GardenofSt.Mark,"inwhich PrinceLorenzohadplaceda numberofbeautifulstatues. Oneofthekeepersgavehim permissiontocopysomeofthe figures,and,ashewaseven morefondofworkingwiththe chiselthanthebrush,hegladly tookadvantageoftheoffer.For hisfirstmodelhetooktheancientfigureofafaun,whichwas somewhatdamaged,themouth beingentirelybrokenoff.But Michaeldidnotheedthat.Day afterdayhelabouredathis copyoftheoldmarbleimage untilhehadcompletedthefigure,havingaddedamouth,the lipsofwhichwerepartedin laughter,withtheteethdisplayed.Whilehewaslookingat hisworkamancameuptohim andaskedwhetherhemight offeranopinion.

WhenMrs.E.M.Eaton,of152Nicholson Road,Subiaco,diedsuddenlyatherhome,August14,therepassedawayagentle,unassuming ladywhohadbeenwell-knowninparishandsocial activitiesintheGoomallingdistrictforover20 yearsinthepioneeringperiod.

DeceasedwasbornnearNortham,atDaudabin,theyoungest daughterofMr.andMrs.WilliamLeeson,asolidCatholic pioneeringfamily.

In1904shemarriedMr.RichardEatonandsettledona farmingpropertyninemiles fromGoomalling.Thecouple wereactiveinCatholicanddistrictinterestsuntilMr. deathin1926.

From1929Mrs.Eatonhas livedinSubiaco,whereherCatholiclifewasanexample.She issurvivedbyfourdaughters: MargaretMary,ofthePresentationConvent,Collie;Mrs.R.

Hughan,ofSubiaco;Mrs.R. Shields,ofDalkeith;andMrs.S. Tippet,ofToorakRoadMelbourne;andtwosisters:Mrs.A. CampbellandMrs.H.M.Scott, both,ofSubiaco.
