Manyofthemcomefrom countries(chieflyCatholic) whichhaveatraditionofa highbirth-rate.Invariably thisisboundupwithaconceptoffamilylifestartlingly differentfromwhatweknow inAustralia.Notablythey regardchildren,notasencumbrances,butasriches eveninthestricteconomic sense.Furthermore,thecontinuityoffamilylifeamong themwillnotpermitcofnpromisewiththesuicidaltendenciesofMalthusianism.
Theconceptofanationof large,happyfamiliesisno poeticidyll.Whereveritisa realityitischaracterisedbya spiritofself-sacrificewhich becomesincreasinglyheroic. Itdemandsthesubjugation ofpleasure-seekingtohard work.Thepleasuresoflarge familiesaresimpleandfound mostlywithinthehome,but theydoengendergenuine

Inhig-fcresiantialaddresstotheConvocationofCanterbury,Dr.GeoffreyFisher,theArchbishopofCanterbury,isreportedtohaveattackedtheVaticanwithfailing toallyitselfwithotherChristianbodiesinthecauseoffreedom.Ostensiblytheprovocationforhisoutburstwasthe PapaldecisiontodefinedogmaticallytheAssumptionof OurLadyonNovember1. Itisfarmorelikelythatthe EncyclicalLetter,"HumaniGeneris,"istherealsourceof irritation.
Whiletherearemanythingswhichmightbesaidin recriminatorytonesabouttheArchbishop'scharges,they wouldnotservethecauseofChristianunityanybetterthan HisGrace'sonslaught.Hencetheymaybebetterleftunsaid.Butthereremainsthetacitimplicationthatthe Anglicansarecastingaboutforleadershipwhichneither theirowncorpusofdoctrinenortheirauthoritiesprovide. Unhappily,theyhaveover-simplifiedtheproblemofreunion andreducedittotermsofcompromisewhichtheCatholic Church,ofitsnature,cannotaccept.
Dr.Fisherasks,inatoneofgenuinepuzzlement,why Catholicsinsistontheacceptancewithintheirownranks of"doctrinesaltogetheroutsidetheBibleandtheancient universalcreeds?"Hehasunwittinglysuppliedhisown answer,forifheacceptstheancientuniversalcreeds,hewill findhimselfbelievingagreatmanythingsnotimplicitly mentionedintheScriptures.But,mostimportantly,he doesattachsomevaluetoauthoritiesoutsidetheBible,in aword,totradition.
ItisquitesillytosuggestthattheChurchissuddenly attemptingtothrustuponthefaithfulsomenoveldoctrine, quiteforeigntotherestoftheirbeliefsandmayberepugnanttothem.TheChurch,consideringCarefullythegreat andbeneficialeffectswhichthisdogmaoftheAssumption mayhaveuponthespiritualmalaiseofthetimes,proposes tomakeclear,certain,andbindinginconsciencesomething whichtheUniversalChurchhasbelievedforthepast1,900 years.

EvenamongmyCatholic friends,aseminaryisarather mysteriousplace.
WhenIreachedMaryknollandsawamassivestonebuilding,withthegreentilesofits roofcurvinginChinesefashion, Irememberedthatthemenwho studiedherewereduetospend theirlivesoverseas.Ihadbeen toldthatagoodportionoftheir timewouldbespentinthe saddle-climbingmountainsor ridingthenarrowpathsbetween ricefields.Ahorseormule wouldbetheirseven-league boots.
Now,Ihavebeenaround horsessincethetimeIwasborn onaranchinTioga,Texas,40 yearsago.Myfather,adealer inhorsesandcattle,taughtme manythings.Here,atMelody ranchinCalifornia'sSanFernandoValley,Ihaveanindoor tanbarkwhereItrainmyown stock.Despiteallthisexperience,Irealisecontinuallyhow muchmoreIcanstilllearn.I didnotexpectthatIcouldcover morethanafewhighlightsof theartofhorsemanshipinthe dayIwouldspendatMaryknoll.

Theactingwasnotpolished, andtheproductionlackedprecision.Inaplayinwhichthe dialoguewasfarfrombrilliant bothexpertactingandsplitsecondtimingweredesperately needed.Theplaydependeda lotoncomicsituations.These werenotworkedwithverve,an abundanceofenergybeingwasted.Thenearestapproachto thetruespiritofhighcomedy wasachievedinthemeleein whichMonsieurdelaCroixendeavouredtocarryonatelephoneconversationinFrench whileCorneliarecitedandEmily danced.Theeffectivenessof thisscenecouldhavebeenconsiderablyincreasedbycausinga rapidlymountingtempotoburst suddenlyandfuriouslyatthe criticalmoment;asitwas,the ascentwasjerky,andtheexplosionheldnostardust.
MaureenChild,asCornelia OtisSkinner,wasthebestofa largecast.Shereallyheldthe playtogether,andwithbetter directionshemighthavetransformedit.Sheneedssome tutoringinposing,andinthe properuseofthevoice;and,of course,shelacksexperience. Butshedisplayedalotofnaturaltalent,includinganappreciationoflightandshade.
OliveDillon,asEmily,was ratherhardtolistento,because shecontinuallywailed,"Oh, Cornelia!-ingreatdistressor shriekedaboutsomethingelsein ahigh-pitchedvoicewhich knewnochange.ShewasoveractingwithabandononSaturdaynight,andsuchinartistic lackofrestraintisathingtobe avoidedatalltimeslikethe plague.Itisamistaketoimaginethatonecanthrowcautiontothewindsinafarce. Then,perhapsmoreacutelythan atothertimes,onemustbe awareofthenecessitytodeceivetheaudience-to"getthem in,"inotherwords.Theunthinkinglaughteroftheaudience-reallyanervousreaction -mustnotbemistakenforapproval.Whentheyarereally enjoyingit"outfront"they'll laughwithadifference.

Insteadofdominatingthestagewhenhewasonit,heseemed uncertainandsubdued.
DenisLynch'sstewardwas thebestofthemaleofferings, becauseforthemostpartitwas convincing.Hemarredsome ofhisexitsbymomentarily droppinghischaracter.
JohnGelleshouldhavebeen oneofthehitsoftheevening. Hemadeinadequateuseofhis naturalFrenchbackground,and underplayedapartwhichshould havebeenfullofdashandcolour.

TheTherriesputonagood showfortheDramaFestival somemonthsback,andsince thenhavehadaneveningof one-actplays.Theirworkthis yearhasshowndecidedpromise.Itwouldbeapityif theydidnotgoontofulfilthat promise-artistically.Icanonly envisagedramaasanartwhich, likeeveryother'art,mustbe pursuedrelentlessly.Itwould betragiciftheshadowshould bemistakenforthesubstance.
