Fifteengailydeckedfishingboatsescortedtheboatbearingthestatue duringthefirstsolemnblessingoftheFremantlefishingfleet.Shownin thepictureistheRev.PietroAbramo,0.M.1,organiserandchaplainofthe ItalianCatholicActionsocieties;membersofthepoliceescort,andmembersofthecommittee.

Fifteengailydecoratedfishing boatsfollowedinlineastern whenthe"Invincible"carrying thestatue,theorganisingcommittee,theClontarfband,membersoftheclergy,andfamilies ofthecrewheadedouttosea. Crewmembersofthe"Invincible"wereMessers.L.Tatulli, MauroPaparello,MichelePaparello,andS.Porta.Theboat wasdecoratedwithbunting,the PapalandAustralianflags,and thethroneforthestatuemade byMr.0.Cappellutiwas adornedwithflowersandpalms. Mountedandmotor-cycle policeheadedtheprocession composedof600membersof thevariousparishsocieties,sodalities,andorganisations. HeadedbytheprocessionalcrossthegroupsincludedChildrenof Mary,membersoftheItalian CatholicActiongroups,flower girls,altarboys,andcadets. ItalianCatholicActiongirlsin theirwhitefrocksandgold sashes(thePapalcolours)were prominentinthemarching groups. Twocommitteeswereincharge oftheday'sproceedings.The

men'scommitteewasheadedby N.Cantatore,president;M.Servillo,secretary;G.DeCeglie, treasurer;andIDeBari,S. Cappelluti,G.Servillo,C.Farinola,and0.Dell'Orta.The women'scommitteewascomposedofMmes.A.Messina, president;L.Servillo,vice-president;G.Camporeale,secretary, andS.DeBari,M.Salvemini, M.Paparello,S.DeCeglie,and G.Servillo.

MembersoftheItalianCatholicActiongroupsfromPerth tookpartalsointhefestivities. Thestatuewascarriedthrough Fremantleontheshouldersof thecommitteeandthentransferredtoshirt-sleeved,gumbootedfishermenwhucarriedit alongthemoletowherethe fleetlayanchored.Father Abramoblessedtheboatsfrom thedeckofthe"Invincible"and afterhavingsailedaboutamile outtoseathefleetreturnedand thestatuewastakeninprocessionbacktothechurchwhere Benedictionandasermonclosed thefunction.

FatherAbramowishesto extendhisgratefulthankstothe CommissionerofPoliceand membersoftheforcewhoassistedwiththemarshallingof thecrowd;tothebrothersand membersoftheClontarfband, tothesisterswhotrainedthe children'schoir,andtoallwho donatedflowersandcandles duringtheweek.

ThefirstgroupofBritishmigrantstobesponsoredbytheYoungChristianWorkermovement reachedFremantleSaturday,Sept.9,aboardthe "NewAustralia"

Seventeenboys,ranginginagesfrom16to19 years,formedthefirstcontingentofthe150lads whichthemovementhopestosettleannuallyin Australia.InthegroupweresevenfromIreland, fivefromScotland,andfivefromEngland.

MetattheboatbytheRev. C.Stinson,MarkHaydockand NeilSmith,membersofthe PerthY.C.W.executive;Duncan Beaton,presidentoftheLeedervillebranch;andRay Gleeson,presidentoftheClaremontblanch,theboyswere tendedareceptionandlunchin King'spark.

Inchargeofthegroupwas DanielLennon,27,ofBelfast, whohadbeenrunningasocial clubforIrishmigrantsin England.Mr.LennonwaswearingaFlemishY.C.W.badgeand wasoneofthefewinthegroup whohadbeencomiectedwith themovement.

Onenon-Catholicboywas withthegroup. Theboyswillbelodgedin theY.C.W.hostel,Hawthorn, Victoria,pendingthefindingof suitableemployment.Theywill

beencouragedtocontinuewith theirtrades.Includedinthe partywerejoiners,farmers,and apprenticeengineers. Theboysareanxioustostart workandtheyallfeelsurethat theywillbehappyintheirnew homeland.

The"NewAustralia"left SouthhamptonAug.15with 1,600passengers.Therichfood andthemeatservedcaused manyoftheEnglishmigrantsto developboilsandotherformsof skinirritations.MalcolmCampbell,17,ajoinerfromNewcastle-on-Tyne,saidthathehad "nevereatenarealpieceof meatbeforeIcameontheboat."

Theboyshadreadaboutthe Y.C.W.schemeintheirlocal newspapersandtheydecidedto cometoAustraliabecausetheyfeltsurethatitaffordedthem "betteropportunities."

Parishionersthenleftinthree busesandnumerousprivate carsfortheChurchofOurLady ofFatima,Palmyra.Enroute theRosarywasrecited.Afterwards,theChurchoftheImmaculateConception,EastFremantle,wasvisited.Thepil- grimageconcludedatSt.Patrick'schurch,Fremantle,where BenedictionoftheBlessedSacramentwasgiven.

Alltoofrequentlyto-daypersonsinpositions ofinfluenceandauthorityrefer,inspeechand writing,to"thedemocraticrightsofmen."Itisa phrasecommonlyusedtodescribewhatthepeople behindtheIronCurtainandthepoorserfsofthe Soviethavelost.Whatisactuallymeantisthe God-givenrightsofman.Thisisnosmallmatter. Itisofelementalimportanceifoneisreallyconcernedwiththeestablishmentofajustandlasting peace.Ifthemisstatementismadedeliberately, withatingeofmalice,itisaformofsabotage-so farasrealpeaceisconcerned.Ifthemisstatementismadethroughignorance,asitfrequently is,itbringsonetothediscouragingrealisationof theenormousworkthatliesaheadtorestorethe humanbeingtohisrightfuldignity.

Ifonesaysamanisfreetodothisorthat, becauseitisoneofhis"democraticrights,"theindividualisleftinaprecariousposition.Hehas norightsasanindividual.Hehostheserights becausehelivesinademocracy.Ifhedoesnot liveinademocracy,heMightnotbeconsideredas havingtheserights.Then,too,itseemsthattodaywehaveallsortsofdemocracies.Somecountrieswhichpassasdemocraciesdonotgiveallthe rights,orthesamerights,asdosomeothercountriesthatarecalleddemocracies.Andyet,we hearverylittlepublicdebateastowhethersuch "rights"shouldbegranted,intheformerdemocracybecausetheyareallowedinthelatter,or thattheyshouldnotbeallowedinthelatterbecausetheyarenotcountenancedintheformer.It isallveryrelative,andintimeonecouldcometo regardahumanbeinginonecountryasbeingless asapersonalitythanahumanbeinginanother country.

Theappallingpossibilitiesofthisconfusion becomeclearerwhenoneseesthe-onlyoccasionallynow,itistrue-referencetoSovietRussiaas "oneofthedemocracies."Ofcourse,themain objectiontospeakingof"thedemocraticrights"of manisthatthesearenotrightsconferredbyademocracyorenjoyedonlybecauseoneisacitizenof odemocracy.Therearecertainrightswhicha manhasbecauseheisahumanbeing.TheyderivefromGod.TheyorerightswhichaState cannotconferortakeaway.AStatemaypreventamanfromexercisinghisGod-givenrights, butthemanstillhashisrights.Itmaybeasked: Whatgooddoesitdotoargueaboutwhetherthe rightsamanhasareGod-givenorState-given,if theStateconpreventhisexercisingtheminany event?

Theansweris,ofcourse,thatitmakesagreat dealofdifference.AStatemaypreventmen fromenjoyingtheirGod-givenrights,butitcannot takethoserightsaway.IftheStatehadconferredtheserights,itcouldtakethemaway,andmen wouldhavenorighttothematall,oreveragain. One'sneighbourmaytemporarilypreventonefrom enteringintoahousewhichoneowns,butthe houseistheindividual's.Iftheneighbourhas loanedonethehouse,anddecidedtopreventone's enteringitanymore,theindividualhasneither therightnorthehopeoflivinginthathouseagain. Manymenspeakof"thedemocraticrightsof man"becausetheydonotknowGod,andtherefore cannotconceiveoftheGod-givenrightsofman. Thismistakeismadehonestly,butitisnonetheless dangerous.Todenythatmanhascertaininalienablerightsbecauseheisahumanbeing,and tosayhehastheserightsonlybecausehisgovernmentconfersthemuponhim,istostartonthepath tototalitarianism,whetherwemeantoornot.But itmaybeargued,thatthisphraseistokentooseriously.NoteveryonecanbetalkedtoaboutGodgivenrights. Somepeople(andsomenations) willunderstand,otherpeople(andnations)will not. So,wespeakabout"democratic'rights,and everybodyunderstands. Doeseverybodyunderstand,however,thatGod-givenrightsaremeant?

Europe'sDebttoFrancoModifies

Inthecourseofhislecture on"TheChurchinEurope," ArnoldLunnstatedthat hissympathieswerenotwith GeneralFranco,butwiththe monarchy.Asawriterhe didnotlikethecensorshipof thepressinSpain."Franco," heclaimed,"isadictator,and alltyrannyiswrong."Mr. Lunnis,ofcourse,perfectly freetoholdsuchviews,and heknowsSpainsufficiently welltobesureofhisfacts. Butwhetherthesepersonal reactionsshouldbeairedin publiclecturesunderCatholicauspices,isadebatable point.Withoutdoubtsuch sentiments,comingfroma leadingCatholicapologist, willlendaidandcomfort,not alonetotheenemiesofGeneralFrancoandofSpain,but alsototheenemiesofthe ChurchandofChristianity. UpontheAustralianpublic atlarge,bludgeonedbythe pressforthreeyearsintothe beliefthatthecauseofinternationalCommunism in Spainwas"democratic"and thecauseofGeneralFranco, "fascistandrebel,"theimpactofMr.Lunn'sremarks willbetoconfirmthemin error.

Thereisnopointinglossingoverthedefectsofthe Francoregime.Butthelessontoberead,asinthecase ofacountrylikeGreece, whereCommunismhasheld sway,issurelythatthevirus haseatendeeplyintheway ofa"fifthcolumn,"andthat eternalvigilanceisnecessary lestthehydra-headedterror risesfromitsashes.Ifthere isratherstrictcensorshipin Spainto-day,thereareprobablyexcellentreasonsfor maintainingit-reasonsmore readilyappreciatedbySpaniards,wholivedthroughthat blood-thirstyperiodthanby Englishmenwhosawthe

thingideallyandoften enoughwithaquitepeculiar detachment.AnEnglishCatholicmayprefertoseethe monarchicalinstitutionrestoredinSpain,butitisa matteroflittleconsequence comparedwithwhatthe Spaniardsdesireintheirown country.WhetherSpain,immediatelyaftertheCivil war,wasespeciallyenamouredoftheFrancoregime,isopentoquestion Butwhatcanscarcelybedeniedisthatoutsideoppositionandquiteunjustifiable interferenceplacedFrancoin apositionofstabilityhe mightneverhavepersonally achieved.ItisalsointerestingtonotethatGeneral Francohasmadelegalprovisionfortherestorationof themonarchy.

Whatever madeabout rangements

madebyMr.Mann,the memberforAvonValley,in theLegislativeAssembly. Sincetheproblemofthehalfcastehasneverbeenseriouslytackled,itisratherastonishingtoreadofMr.Mann's proclamationthatthesepeopleare"beyondhope."It wouldreallyappearfromhis outlookthattheyarebeyond charity.Accordingtothis legislator,theycouldnotbe convertedin50generations tothewhiteman'swayof living.Childendowmentonly incitedthemtoincrease;citizenshiprightswereonly wantedbythemtoenable themtogetdrunk;theyhad thecunningofadingo.

HappilyMr.Mannisina minority,numberingapproximatelyone,andhisview wiNnotdeterresponsible citizensfromembarkingon whatisamostsignificantand necessaryexperiment.We wouldliketosee,however, atthesametimeasimilar quibblesmaybeprojectforyoungnativemen. thepoliticalar-ForMr.Manndidhavesome inSpaintoday,substanceforhisobservation thatmalenativestandards itisgrosslyunfairnottoacknowledgetheworld'sdebt toGeneralFranco.Forit washe,andnottheking, whobyforestallingtheRed revolutionof1936,saved, notonlySpain,butallEurope.WhatFranco'svictorymeantwastooverthrow theRussiantime-tablefor theruinofEurope,andto givetheworldarespiteof 10yearsbeforethatthreat couldberenewedonaworldscale.Theworld,owingto agiganticconspiracyonthe partofthepress,hasnotyet learnedthetruefactsofthe Spanishwaragainstbarbarism.Butthelessonisthere forhistorytoread,andit maynotbetemerariousto suggestthatFrancowillgo downtoposterityasagreaterandmorehonourablefigurethanChurchillforhiscontributiontothesalvationof Europeandtheworld.

Whatisparticularlysatisfyingaboutthepresentcontroversyisthatitisnotanargumentaboutabstractions. Somethingpracticalisbeing done,anditschiefvaluemay bethatitwilllay,onceand forall,theinterminableargumentsaboutwhetherthe half-casteis,orisnot,assimilable.

Ithasbeenratherdiscomfortingtodiscoverthatthere areinthecommunitysome peoplewhoapparentlyallow racialprejudiceandvenal considerationstooutweigh what'isobviouslyapressingnationaldemand.While itischeeringtonotethata

numberofarmynurseshave disclaimedtheobjections raisedbyoneoftheirofficials,itisdifficulttoconceal disgustatthestatements

werenotbeingraisedtothe samelevelasthegirls'. Whenthegirlsleavethe home,theywillhaveno choicebuttomarrysome poor-typeWhiteorreturnto theirwretchedcamps,where alltheirtrainingwillbelost. Youthfulandsuitablemarriageis mostdesirable amongthehalf-castes,and ifitcannotbearrangeditslackmaywelldefeatthewholescheme.In theplanningofthiscommendableproject,itistohe hopedthatthepotentinfluenceofreligionwillnotbe neglected,andthatequalopportunitieswillapplytothe productsoftheCatholicmissionsastoothers.

AMatterofEmphasis

Nothing,perhaps,sobetraysthemindandintentof BishopBarnesashisinfelicitouschoiceoflanguage.He doesnotproposetodealwith degeneratepeople,butwith degenerate"stock,"meaning menmadeintheimageof God.Andheproposesto dealwiththemexactlyasone dealswithanimals.TheBishop'smethodwith"tainted humanstock"isdirectand simple-hewouldkillthem offpainlessly.Inconsiderationsofthissort,thematter ofemphasisisratherinterestingtoobserve.Themodernpaganstressesthathe willmurderpeoplepainlessly,whiletheChristianmaintainsitismurder.Inthe newtheologyofBishop Barnes,itbecomes,forthe firsttimeinChristianhistory,permissibledirectlyto killtheinnocent.

ASSURE

Evenwereeuthanasiaa morallylegitimatemeansof meetingtheproblem,it wouldfailofitspurpose.For, despitethepretensionsof eugenistsitisnotpossibleto forecastthequalityofprogeny.Momentarily,thelethal chamberwouldbringabouta hugedropinthenumberof the"tainted,"butevenas thiswasbeingdonehundreds ofchildren,bornofnormal parents,wouldbefoundto bebelowpar.Againstthis eventualityneitherbirthcontrolnorabortionoffers theslightestrelief. Thetwomajorquestions, however,whichtheeugenists willnotface,are:Whatconstitutes"ataint,"andwhois todecidetheissue?Bishop Barneswouldappeartohave hisideasonthesematters clearlyformulateduptoa point.For,heassuresus, "onlythemostreactionary" condemnbirth-controlto-day asimmoral.Now,areactionaryisonewhowilfully opposesprogress,andin newGoldenAgeaboutto opentherewillberoomonly forprogressives.Theywill all,presuinably,benamed Barnes,Wells,orRussell.In thatcasethegaschambers wouldsimplyyawnforthe bodiesofreactionaryCatholics.

TobefairtotheBishop, onenotesthathehasqualifiedhisviewsonsterilisation. Hehasatlastdiscovered whatreputablescientists haveknownforagoodmany years,thatitwouldheonly "partiallyeffective."However,letuspresson,saysthe Bishop,withgreatgood cheer.Halfaloafisbetter thannobread.Likewise,in theconsiderationofsuicide andabortion,BishopBarnes soundsacautionarynote. Butitisnotacautionintendedtodeter.Forsuchmattersoflifeanddeatharenot subjecttothemoraljudgmentofChristianity,butto "thefundamentalreligious

principlesofourdeveloping scientificcivilisation."The newspaperreportsdeniedus thetantalisingtenetsofthis newreligion,butquite enoughwasgivenofthe viewsofBishopBarnesto enableustoconcludethatit involvesdiametricaldenial oftheChristianfaith.

"UnfortunateAccident"

Inallthattissueofgrave humanandtheologicalproblems,BishopBarnesalludedonlyoncetotheteachings ofChrist,andthatreference wasfatuous.TheBishophasfoundnothinginChrist's teaching"tocauseustowelcomeanunrestrictedpopula-

tionincrease,whenitsdirect

outcomeisavastgrowthof humanmisery."Whathe couldhavefoundwas Christ'sreaffirmationofthe TenCommandments,includingtheFifth-"Thoushalt notkill."

Moreover,one cannotviewthehumanitarianconcernwithanysincerity,sincethemeasuresproposedtopreventmisery wouldsubstitutehorrorsa thousand-foldmorepoignant. Wedonotbelievethatthe viewsofmensuchasBishop BarnesandDeanHewlitt Johnsonarecharacteristicof theAnglicanbodyasa whole.TheRedDeanhas beendisownedbytheArchbishopofCanterburyand othereminentecclesiastics. LikewiseBishopBarneshas beenundercensure.The AnglicanArchbishopof Perth,Dr.Moline,spoke feelinglyof"theunfortunate accidentbywhichDr.Barnes isaBishop."Forallthat, theAnglicansmustfeelthat thereissomethingwrong withareligioussystemwhich cannoteffectivelysuppress suchabdminablelicenceina manwhoholdsanofficial teachingofficeintheChurch.

JackGibbingsisplausibleas thedoctor-husband,who,with allthefatuityofameremale, imaginesthathecankeepa mermaidinhishouseandget awaywithit.

Thepreposterousnatureof thisset-upreducesthespecial nurse(JeanetteTaggart)to hysterics;butthereaftershecarriesonwithadmirablesangfroid.

Oneofthebestbitsofacting intheplaywasrecordedbyJill Zuegg,whenshebrokedown underthestrainofseparation fromherboy-friend(James Kemp),andmadesomestartling revelationstothemistressconcerningMiranda.

JimKempwasefficientasthe man-servant,evenifhisphysiquesuggestedhewouldbebetteremployeddiggingpotatoes. Still,itneededsomebrawnto belumpingMirandaaroundas longashedid.

Patch,afteraperiodofpartialeclipse,seemstohaveblazed forthagainwithrenewedenergy.Theclubismuchhandicappedbynothavingitsown theatre;butthesuccessofmakeshiftarrangementsillustrates thevalueofdeterminationin endeavouringtoovercomean impasse.Itisannouncedthat regularseasonsofplayand dancehavebeenplannedfor 1951.

OnWednesdaylastadance recitalwasheldinthe_Perth Townhall.Itwasmainlyan opportunitytodemonstratethe prowessofstudentsoftheacademy,andtheaudienceconsistedlargelyofadmiringrelatives oftheyounghopefulswhotrippedacollectivetoewhichwas oftenfantasticbutnotuniformlylight.ExceptionswereJean WilkinsonandDaisyWright, bothdancingteachersatPatch. Theyprovidedinterludesof gracearidcharminafirsthalf whichwasoverloadedwithjuvenileeffortflungroundwith pantingabandon.Attimesthe stageresembledakeep-fitclubinconvulsions;butnodoubt everydancestudiohastogothroughthisordealintheinterestsofthefewwhowilleventuallyfloattothetop.

Aballetofexceptionalbeauty andclassicformclosedthefirst partoftheprogramme.This was"MountainLegend,"given bythePatchballettothemusic ofGreig,withchoreographyby JeanWilkinson.Theitemwas excellentlystage-managed,hosts oftreenymphs,brownies,etc., weavingtheirwaynimblyandunerringlythroughanevermultiplyingcrowd.MissWilkinsonhasmuchtalent.

Anothertocomeunderspecial noticeduringtheeveningwas PeterMann.His"AztecFire Dance,"forwhichhealsopre- paredthechoreography,was finelyexecuted.

Theone-actplay("TheThree Timer,"byJamesF.Stone),givenimmediatelyafterinterval,wasaslightpiece.There wasnomaleinthecast,andso thedialoguedevelopediutoan intolerablymonotonouscacophonyoffemalehysteria.It wassingularlyunfunny.

Hypnosis,forthemostpart. isacombinationofsuggestion andconcentrationwithnopassageofmagnetismoranyother physicalforcefromoneperson totheotherseeminglyinvolved. Thevictimapparentlyismerely guidedininducinghypnosison himself.Hethenobeysthesuggestionsofthehypnotistbecausehehasacceptedhypnosis withthisinview,andthepower ofconcentrationinducedbythe mentalstateissooverwhelmingthathedoesjustwhatheis toldandnotsomethingelse. Thereisnoreasonforgoingany furtherthanthisinanexplanationofthestate.Itisstrange, butnotparticularlymysterious, excepttothoseunfamiliarwith it.

Emotionally,Ifindthatmy children'sreactionstocertain typesofscenesinfilmsareno differentfromthosetheyexhibit atcertain"scenes"inotherforms ofentertainmentwhichtheyenjoy.AtaSpeedwaymeeting, forexample,Ihaveseenthem hidetheireyesfromanimpendingcrashoraverttheirgaze fromthestartinglinewhenthe ridersarelined-upforthestart ofsomeimportantracesuchas acupfinal.Theexcitement whentheirfavouriterider figuresinaveryclosefinishis onlyequalledbytheirtenseness andanxietywhenheisinvolved inacollision.Atthecircus theyknowandhaveexhibited fearforthesafetyofthehighleveltight-ropewalkerand trapezeartists;theyareclearly relievedwhentheliontamer emergessafelyfromthecage andeverythingissoonforgotten anywayastheylaughuproariouslyattheanticsandpatterof theclowns.

WithReligiousTheme

TheChurchhaslongemployed'visuals'inherworkand modernfilmisreallythelatest linkinthechainstartedbyher centuriesago.OurLordHimselfsurely"illustrated'Hiswork onearthbymeansoftheparables,andinsodoingprovided thesubjectformanypictorialillustrationswhichcontinuetoinfluenceandinstructchildrentoday.Thenin1223St.Francis producedthefirstChristmas cribintheopenairatGreccio andthewonderofthefirst onlookerscanhavebeenno greaterthanthatofmodern childrenseeingthecribforthe firsttime.Thecrucifix,holy pictures,StationsoftheCross andstainedglasswindowsare all"visuals"whichtheChurch stillsuccessfullyemploys.

Iwouldliketoseemorereligiousfilms.Myownchildren areusuallyveryimpressedbya religiousorsupernaturalfilm orscene,e.g.,thefinalsceneof JoanofArcwheretheSaintis succouredinherlastmoments atthestakebythesightofthe Crucifix,createdinthemanew interestandrespectforthereproductionoftheCrucified Christ.InHamlettheywere quicktonote,andwereduly impressedbythefact,that LaurenceOlivierwouldnot attackhisintendedvictimbecausehefoundhimkneelingin prayer.Theyhavemadereferencetothesetwoincidents severaltimessince.Ontheother handtheyhavebeenequally quicktonoticethattheirhero or,heroineinthefilmgoesto bedorrisesinthemorning withoutsayingprayersandthe unsaid"Gracebeforemeals" alsoprovesdifficultforparents toexplainaway.Smallactions likethesemayescapethenotice oforseemtootrivialtoproducersbuttheywoulddoatremendousamountofgoodifthby couldbeperformed,particularly bychildren'sfavouritestars.

Anotherthingwhichchildren seizeuponisthecasewhere, forexample,astarappearsasa "bad-egg"inonefilmonlytobe castina"goody-goody"or, worsestillfromthispointof view,areligiousroleinthe next.Oncechildrenknowastar isaCatholicinreallifehecan donowrongintheireyes; whetherheknowsitornot thereforehehasaverygreat responsibilityonhishandsin thisconnection.Thus,Ihave heardmychildrenstoutlydefend anycriticismofBingCrosby, howevermild,because"Bing's aCatholic"theysay!Spencer Tracy,too,is"thetops"because ofhismanyrolesasapriest. Childrentodayarebecoming muchmoreperceptiveinregard tofilms,nodoubtasaresultof livinginthisagewhenvisual aids,especiallysoundfilms, formpartofthenormalequipmentofschools.
