OnSaturdaymorning,August26,asthe SanctuarybellannouncedtheConsecrationofthe MassintheHighgateChapelthesoulofMother M.St.MartinawentforthtomeettheGodWhom shehadfaithfullyservedasaProfessedReligious oftheCongregationofOurLadyoftheMissions.
MotherM.St.Martinawas thegrand-auntofDoctorDaniel Quinlanandauntofthelate Mr.T.Quinlan,M.L.A.whofor manyyearswasaleading memberoftheCatholiclaityin Perth.Itwasathisinstigation thatHisLordship,Bishop Gibney,fiftyyearsago,invited theSistersfromNewZealand tomakeafoundationinhis diocese.
MotherM.St.Martinacame toWestAustraliawiththefirst littlebandtoarriveinOctober oftheyear1897.Mother,atthis time,wasaProfessedReligious oftwentyyears'standinginthe Congregation,havingreceived thereligioushabitfromthe handsoftheholyFoundress herself,MotherMaryofthe HeartofJesus.FromthenceforthMotherhaddevotedherselftotheworkofGodandsouls inbothIslandsoftheNew ZealandProvinceuntilObediencecalledhertoWestAustralia.
Fromherfirstarrivalin Highgate,Mother'sperfectcourtesyandsincereinterestinthe welfareofallwithwhomshe cameincontact,combinedwith acordialandengagingmanner, attractedmanygenuinefriends tothenewfoundationand helpedgreatlyinthearduous workofextendingGod'skingdominsouls.
Althoughforshortperiods
MotherworkedinBusseltonand Fremantle,inbothofwhich placesshefulfilledtheofficeof Superior,thelargerpartofher longreligiouslifeMotherspent inHighgate,devotingherself
principallytothefo"mationof theyoungerchildren.Thepreparationoftheselittleonesfor theirFirstHolyCommunion wasoneofMother'sgreatest joys,andwhenwithadvancing yearsshewasobligedtogive upthiswork,shestillretained herotherfavouriteoccupation ofpreparingconvertsforreceptionintotheChurch.With increasingyearsthisalsohadto berelinquished.Onlytwo thingsnowremained-almost unceasingprayerbeforethe BlessedSacramentandthedistributionofCatholicperiodicals,chargeofwhichMother kepttillherdeath,hermindat 93beingstillaslucidasinher youngerdays.
Atthetimeofherdeath, Motherwasinher70thyearof herReligiousProfession,aspan notgiventomanytoattain,and inherlastdaysshereceivedan abundantrewardforherlong lifeofzealandfidelity.During herlastillness,whichwasof shortduration,Motherreceived theLastRitesofHolyChurch andthepriestlyministrationsof ourparishpriest,VeryRev. FatherWallace,andRev.Father Dunphy,C.SS.R.whowasconductingtheannualretreatfor theCommunity.' Withherpassing,theCongregationofOurLadyofthe Missionshaslostoneofitsmost loyalanddevotedmembers,and inthehiddenapostolateof prayeroneofitsmostzealous workers.
Onthemorningofthe28th, RequiemMasswascelebrated intheSacredHeartChurch,

Fromtheirvantagepointthe Judgesloopedveryintentas theyallottedpointsforthe march.Theteamscametoa halt-the"at-ease"command wasgiven-butitwasatense momentuntilthejudgesannouncedthatSt.Anne's(Gold) hadscoredthemostpointsin theMarch,bringingthemtoa totalof176points,against173 forRed,and121forGreen.
Mr.C,Dudleyannouncedthe winnersofthevariousevents andRt.Rev.MonsignorE.Moss,

Theyhaveenduredthreeyearsofcivilwarwaged withanintensityandferocitywhichonlyfratricidalstrifecaninflame;theirwardeadnumbered onemillion.Theywereblockadedandunderconstantthreatofinvasionforthenextfiveyears,and forthepastfivetheyhavehadtosuffertheclowningatLakeSuccesseverySeptember,nottomentionthepreposterousanticsofinnumerablecommittees,sub-committeesandspecialisedagencies oftheUnitedNations,fromwhichSpainhasbeen excludedasunclean.
Thequarantineinwhichthenationhasbeen heldsince1946,whentheU.N.O.actedagainst Spain,hasbeenaggravatedbyacombinationof causes.Poorinnaturalresources,Spainhasbeen cutofffromborrowingcapitalandfromimporting essentialmaterialsforreconstructionanddefence. Thechiefdamageofthiscoursehasbeen wroughtinthemindsoftheSpanishpeople,who areconvinced,withnolittlereason,thatthenationsoftheWesthave,untilveryrecently,been playingMoscow'sgame.Itwillrequiremorethan fairwordstoremovethisunhappyimpression.It

Wemaysay,indeed,thata shininglighthasbeenextinguishedinourmidst.Aholy life,withitsglowingexampleof Christianvirtue,hascometoan end,creatingaterriblevoidin thecirclesheadorned.Her home,asacredshrineofdomesticvirtue,isbereftofitsqueen. Anillustriousfigureinthereligiousandcivillifeoftheparish andmunicipalityisgonetoher eternalreward.
BorninEblowvale.South Wales,in1904,thelateMrs. KenmanmigratedtoWestern Australiain1924. Withher; familysheestablishedahomeat ShentonPark,whereherlife wasspentuntilherdeathafew weeksago.Herdeepspiritof Faith,herzealintheserviceof Godandherneighbour,andher extraordinaryorganisingability weresoondetectedanddirected tothefoundationandgrowthof thenascentparishofShenton Park.Possessingacharming personality,sheendearedherself toclergyandlaityalike-her "winningway"providedakey totheaffectionandesteemof eventheuntouchables.
Therewasnosodalityorsocietydesignedtopromotetheinterestsofsoulsthatdidnot benefitbyherassistance.She wasPresidentoftheSacred HeartSodalityformanyyears, anditsflourishingconditiontodayisdue,innosmallmeasure, toherzealandexample.She alsooccupiedthePresidential roleinthelocalbranchofthe CatholicWomen'sLeague,and duetoherinitiativeanddrivingforce,thisSocietyhassuccessfullyundertakenworkboth variedandbeneficial.
Inthecivilsphereherinfluencewasnolessoutstanding. Duringthewaryears,asPresidentoftheShentonParkBranch oftheAustralianComfortsFund, shehelpedtoraiseover£3,000 -atrulyamazingachievement -forAustraliansfightingoverseas.Forsixyearsshewas SecretaryoftheM.C.L.ConvalescentHome.In1947she wonaseatontheSubiacoMunicipalCouncil.AsCouncillor shedisplayedgreatwisdomand civicsense,meriting,nodoubt, anicheinthehistoryofthisdistrict.InrecentyearsshehelpedtoestablishtheRosalieCommunityCentreAssociation, whichhasprovidedthechildren ofthelocalitywithfreelibrariesandplaycentres.The "EileenKenmanMemorialLibrary"bearstestimonytothe partsheplayedininstituting anddevelopingthisscheme.

Themovementinfavourof thedoctrinaldefinitionofthe AssumptionoftheBlessedVirginMaryintoHeavenhasbeen dividedintotwonotablephases: first,thetimeduringtheVatican Councilof1870,and,second,the firsthalfofthepresentcentury, wheninterestrathersuddenly increased,grewandspread throughouttheworld.
Nearly200Bishopsattending theVaticanCouncilof80years agofavouredtheproclamation oftheDoctrineoftheAssumptionoftheBlessedVirginatthat timeHowever,becausethe DoctrineofInfallibilitywastakenupanddefinedatthatCouncil.thematterwasundecided there.
Inthepresentcentury,there havebeenonlytwoyearsin whichpetitionsdidnotreachthe HolySeeaskingforthedefinitionofthedoctrine:1914and 1927.Intheyear1900,there were67petitionsreceivedatthe Vatican.In1901,thepetitions numbered213.In1902,there were114.
Theyear1934sawthegreatestnumberreceivedbetween 1900and1940.Atotalof352 petitionswerereceivedthat year.Otheryearsinwhich largenumbersofrequestsfor thedefinitionoftheDoctrineof theAssumptionwerereceived are:1923,18;1930,108;1932, 138;1933,188;1935,127.
Theyearsbetweenthetime ofthe Counciland1900 producedrelativelylittleactivityregardingthequestion,but withthenewcenturytherecame averitableoutbreakofinterest anddesirethattheDogmaof theAssumptionbedefined.
WhentheSupremePontiff proclaimsthedogmaoftheAssumptionnextNovember1, almost96yearswillhavepassedsincethelastdoctrinaldefin_ ition,excathedra(fromthe chair,orbyvirtueoforinthe exerciseofone'soffice),bya Popealone,wasmade-byPope PiusIX,whoproclaimedthe dogmaoftheImmaculateCone2ptiononDecember8,1854.
Thelastdogmatohavebeen addedtothebodyofdefined doctrineswasthatconcerning thePapalPrimacyandInfallibility,solemnlyproclaimedby theVaticanCouncilof1870.
Itisnotedherethatwiththe forthcomingproclamation,the lasttwoexcathedradefinitions concerntheprivilegesofthe MotherofGod:theImmaculate ConceptionandherAssumption.
TheDogmaoftheAssumption willformallydefineasadoctrine offaith,tobebelievedandheld byeveryCatholic,that"after herdeath,thebodyoftheBlessedVirgin,reunitedwithher soul,wasmiraculouslytakenup intoHeaven."

Theacidtestoftrueloveof musicfoundPerthwantingbadlyonMondaynight,whenadisgracefullysmallaudiencehalffilledthetinyTownHalltohear amagnificentprogrammeof ChamberMusicbytheRobert MastersQuartet.Considering thesizeofthecrowdsatthe SubscriptionConcerts,itisreallyamazinghowfewmanageto survivewhentheglamourofthe SymphonyOrchestraisremoved. ThosewhodidgoalongonMondaymusthavefeltsorryfor theirfriends.
Goodensembleplayingisamatterofmutualunderstandingand longpractice,andthesetwo qualitiestheQuartethasin abundance.Themostnotice- ' ablecharacteristicoftheirplayingistheirevenlymatchedtone andrhythm,whichattimesis trulyastounding,particularly whenoneconsiderstherepertoirewhichwillallowthreefull recitalsinoneweek.Specialising,astheydo,intriosand pianoquartets,theirprogrammes arecolourfulandeasytolisten toeventothoseuninitiatedin thebeautyofChamberMusic, whichisstillararetreatin Perth.
Thefirstworkpresentedwas theQuartetinGMinor,K478, byMozart,andwiththefirst fewbarsoftheAllegro,theaudiencewasintroducedtoplaying ofthehigheststandard.The slightlysombrequalityunderlyingthesurfacegaietyofthis movementwasmostbeautifully expressed,butthehighlightof theworkwastheexquisiterendering-ofthesereneAndante, thesecondmovement,inwhich thefourinstrumentsblended witheachothertoextractthe lastounceoutofMozart'sperfectpieceofwriting.TheQuartethasonlythreemovements, s thefinalonebeingasparkling

Incontrastwiththeseverely classicalbeautyoftheMozart, thenextitemwastheString TrioofthecontemporaryFrench composer,JeanFrancais,awork whichaboundsinsparklingGallicwit,andswiftchangesof lightandshade.Eachofthe fourmovementsisextremely short,butinterestingandarresting.Thefirstmovementis ti forunitedstrings,butismarked
Allegrettovivo,anditwasimmediatelyobviousthatthisTrio hasbeenintheensemble'srepertoireforalongtime,as nothingelsecouldexplainthe perfectsynchronisationofcrescendoandpianissimoentries. Thiswasevenmorenoticeable inthetrickylittleScherzo, whichcallsforrapidchangesof tempo.FortheAndantethe muteswereonagain,andthe audiencewastreatedtoaperfectinterpretationofthemost beautifullittlesectionofthe work.Thereisatouchof Walton's"Facade"aboutthe Rondo,inwhichFrancaislets hisebullientspiritshavefree playagain,andtherewasnot adullfaceintheaudiencewhen thetriohaddealtwiththiscontestbetweenthetownbandand thedancehallgroup.
ThefinalofferingwasDvorak's QuartetinEFlat,Op.87,a typicallyCzechwork,usingthe folksongsanddancesofBohemia.Ihavenotreferred specificallysofartoanypar- ticularmemberof'theensemble, becauseitisdefinitelyimpossibletopraiseoneabovethe other.Theyworkasateam, andeachonecontributesan equalsharetothewhole,but, sinceDvorakmadethe'cello conspicuousinthesecondmovementofthisQuartet,onemust paytributetothelovelyplaying ofthe'cellist,whohelpedto makethissectionadelighttothe ear.Butnow,havingsaidso much,itwouldbeunfairnotto mentionthesuperbhandlingof thedifficultfirstmovementby thepianist,andthenoneisleft reminiscingonthecontributions oftheviolinandviolaatother stagesoftheevening,which mustbeleftunmentioned.
Altogether,Icanrecommend thisensembletoanyonewiththe faintesttraceofaloveofmusic inthem,andhopethattheir visitwillgivethepublicanincentivetohearmoreofthisdelightfullyintimateformof music.
