FatherReidy'sGoldenJubilee

HighMassandPriests'Luncheon

ThegoldenjubileeoftheordinationofVery Rev.MatthewReidy,parishpriestofSt.Brigid's, WestPerth,wasobservedonWednesdaylast,when SolemnHighMasswascelebratedintheparish church.HisGracetheArchbishoppresided,and paidaneloquenttributetoFather,Reidy'sapostoliclaboursduringhalfacentury.FatherReidy respondedsuitably.

Intheafternoon,theparishionersofSt. Brigid'sentertainedtheclergyatlunchintheParishHall.Closeto60priestsattended,andthe occasionwasnicelybalancedwithhumorousand reminiscentspeeches.

HighMasswasofferedat9.30 a.m.byFatherMcKeon.Father Mullensactedasdeaconand FatherMorahanassub-deacon. FatherO'Farrelldirectedthe ceremonies.AlargecongregationpackedSt.Brigid'stopay tributetoawell-lovedpastor. HisGracewasattendedbyMonsignoriKennedy.V.G.,and Goody.

Theluncheon,providedbythe parishioners,wasadmirablyorganisedbyMessrs.M.Kieling andN.Murray,assistedbya willingstaff.Thehallwasbedeckedwithflagsandbuntingof thePapalcolours,whileasilk bannerwiththewords,"Quid retribuamDomino"gavethe keynotetothefunction.A beautifullydecorated,three-tieredcakehadprideofplaceinthe banquethall.

Rt.Rev.MonsignorKennedy presidedoverthegathering which,hesaid,hadbeenprovidedbytheparishionersto celebratethegoldenjubileeof theirworthyparishpriest.They hadcometojoinhiminthejoy andhappinessofagreatoccasion.Hevisualisedthemany andvariedexperiencesofFather Reidyduringthe50yearsofhis priesthood.Hehadseenthe Stategrowfromsmallandhumblebeginnings.Hisfieldofactivityhadtakenhimthrough manypartsoftheState,where hewaskindlyknownandremembered.Hecongratulated FatherReidyonhisgoldenjubiless,onthegreatworkhehad doneovertheyears,andhoped thathestillhadmanyyearsof priestlyactivitytocome.

MonsignorKennedythenannouncedthat100telegramsand messagesoffelicitationhadbeen received.Amongthosereadto thegatheringwasonefromthe Archbishop.Anotherfromhis AlmaMater,St.Patrick'sCollege,Carlow,notedthatthestaff andstudentswerenotinignoranceofthejubilee,asFather Reidyandfourotherswerelistedin.thecurrent"Carlowvian." OthermessageswerefromIta-

lianCatholicAction,St.Brigid's branchoftheHolyNameSociety,AquinasCollege,andSt. LouisSchool.TheMt.Lawley GolfClubofferedcongratulationson"awell-playedround."

ThefirstspeakerwasFather Robinson,C.SS.R.,whonoted thatonlyFatherBriodywas aheadofhimselfandFather Reidyinlengthofserviceinthe Archdiocese.FatherReidyhad cometoAustraliawithagreat reputationasanathlete.He hadplayedfootballwiththe famousKerryteamwhichhad wonmoreall-Irelandfinalsthan anyothercounty.Theywere separatedwhenthespeaker wenttoKalgoorlieandFather ReidytoAlbany,butheoften hadnewsofFatherReidy'sgreat featsatgolf.Hehadendedup reigningasgolfkingofthe South-West,wherehisnamewas

remembered.TheArchbishop had,thatmorning,paidabeautifultributetohisworkasa priest.Hehadsufferedthe hardshipsofthepioneering days-answeringsickcallsupto adistanceof250miles.

MonsignorMoloneyrecalled howFatherReidyhadestablishedthechurchinHopetoupand Ravenswood.InKatanninghe hadhadaprovinceasbigas IrelandorScotland.Theroads wereonlytracksontheland. TherewasnoCatholicschool betweenYorkandAlbany.He travelledbytrainandbyhorse andsulkyupto40and50miles awayfromtheline.Later,on amotorbjke,hescouredthe plainsofKatanning.

Notonlyasapriesthadhe distinguishedhimself.Hewas anathleteoutoftheordinary. Hehadmadehisnameingolf. Onmanyoccasionshewonthe -championshipoftheGreat SouthernandalsooftheAvon Valley.Hehadplayedamong someofthegreatestgolfersof theuniverse,includingthegreat VonNida,whohadsaidofhim that,consideringhisyears,he wasoneofthebestgolfershe hadeverplayedagainst.He wasalwaysaloverofhorsefleshandhadbredsomeexcellentthoroughbreds.Hecame ofa"stayingstrain"andlooked goodforatleastanotherten years.

MonsignorMcMahonsaidthat FatherReidylookedonlifewith thatlittlegrainofhumourso necessarytosuccessfulliving. Hewasalwaysplacidandgoodhumoured.

Dr,AberdeensaidthatFather Reidyhadbeenverypopularin Northam,andherecollected

withpleasurethathewasavery goodsportsman,inthebestsense oftheterm.Ifallcouldgrow asmellowashehaddone,they wouldhaveachievedoneofthe mostdifficultoflife'sproblems. HepraiSedFatherReidy'soutsideinterestsandbreadthof vision.

Dr.Hollandstatedthathehad knownFatherReidyfor40 years.Healwayshadhobbies, whichwereessentialformenof hiscalling.Hewasalwaysa goodmixerandactivefortheinterestsofthedistrict.

DirectorofSt.Ildephonsus' Collegefrom1935to1939,Rev. BrotherPlacidGilchristdiedon June7th.,afteronlyafewweeks inhospital.Itisover64years sinceheenteredtheMaristBrothers'JuniorateatSt.Mary's Cathedral,Sydney,andalittle over58yearssincehisreligious profession,havingcelebratedhis goldenjubileeonMarch19,1942.

BrotherPlacid,beforecoming totheWest,hadheldimportant officesintheMaristBrothers.He hadbeenDirectoroftheMarist SchoolatNewcastle,Directorof St.Joseph'sCollege,Hunter's Hill,andamemberoftheMaristCouncil.

Oflateyearshehadbeen4tationedatSt.Anne'sMaristBro-

thers'HighSchool,BondiBeach, where,untilhisfinalsickness,he taughtafullday'sprogramme. Quiet,reserved,unhurriedin hisdemeanour,hewasindeed placidbynatureaswellasby name.Infacthisoutward calmandattimesveryreserved exteriorbeliedawarmthofaffectionandcordialitywhenthis reservewasbrokenthrough. BrotherPlacid'sinterestswere whollyintheMonastery.Those favouredwithhisfriendship soonrealisedthewealthgarneredfromhiswidereading,Eng-lish, andHistoryandArtespecially; allknewofhiskeenloveof nature.Mayhislongandvaluableyearsofservicemeritan eternalreward.R.I.P.

ItwasdecidedtohaveoneAssociation,withseparatecommitteesforeachschool,butmemberswereurgedtogiveevery assistancetofunctionsorworks undertakenbyeithercommittee.

FatherCunninghamandMr. PhilDepiazzi(ofDardanup) werepresent,andoutlinedtothe meetingtheaimsofsuchanAssociation,explaininghowtheir branchfunctions,andhowtobe

ofthebestassistancetotheSisters. Mr.H.Smithallrelatedhow, throughtheeffortsofMr.Jim MilliganandMr.ClemOwens, sufficientfundswereraisedto providetheconventboys'footballteamwithnewguernseys andfootballs.Manyothermatterscameupfordiscussionand wereleftforthenewly-formed committeestoattendto.

Theprincipaloffice-bearers electedwere:President,Mr. Geo.Staples;vice-president,Mr. Norm.Wells;treasurer,Mr.Jim Burke;secretary,Mr.StanTaylor;assistantsecretary,Mrs.H. Nevin.

ScotsArchbishop DIES

EDINBURGH,Scotland,May 25(Radio.NC).-Archbishop AndrewJosephMcDonald, 0.S.B.,ofSt.AndrewandEdinburgh,diedhereinahospital afteralongillness(May22).He was79yearsold,andhadbeen ArchbishopofthisArchdiocese since1929.

Theoutstandingmemberof theCatholicHierarchyofScotland,hisaccomplishmentswere many.Duringhisregimemany Catholicchurches,schoolsand otherinstitutionswerebuilt.He alsobuiltincreasinggoodwill betweenhimselfasleaderofthe CatholicsinScotlandandnationalandcivicauthorities.

.Hewasnotedforhisoutspoken andcourageouspastoralsonsocialandlaboursubjects.In severalletterstotheclergyhe paidhomagetothePolishpeopleintheircourageousstandin defenceoftheirhomeland.

WhatevertheeventualoutcomeofthehubbuboverCommunisminthiscountryandthecontinuedunrestabroad, thereareindicationsthatitisgivingtheworldaclearerunderstandingofhowtheKremlinusesfellow-travellers,Communistsympathisersandjustplaindupes.Itisevidentnow thatmanyoftheAustralianpeoplewereinlargepartdeceivedintothinkingthatthearmedhordesthatsweptdown fromNorthChinatoconquervirtuallyallofthatmainland wereoutragedfarmersandnotCommunistforces.Now thatthe"Reds"haveachievedtheirpurposeinOldCathay, noseriouseffortismadethere,orhere,tokeepthebucolic masksbeforetheirfaces.Thequestionarises:Howcould officialsandpeopleofournationhavebeensogrosslydeceivedonthispoint?Theanswertothisquestioniscomingto publicattentionnow.ItexplainswhyaCommunist-dominatedpressofsmallcirculationcouldbeofsuchimportance. Includedinthissmallcirculationwereeducators,newspaper, radioandmagazinewritersandpeopleinmoreorlessresponsibleplacesintheGovernment.

Inthecaseofwriters,someofthemapparentlywereable towritealongtheCommunistparty-lineinpublicationsof largeandinfluentialcirculations,withoutthepublisherssuspectinganything.SomeofthoseinGovernmentwhoread the"pink"press,accordingtothebeliefofmany,werepeople who"analysed"worldconditionsforpolicy-makingGovernmentofficials,anditiseasytoseehowtheycouldbeof service.Thereareindications,too,thatAustrlaiansarebeginningtolookmorecriticallyatthebookswhichjournalists, radiocorrespondents,politiciansandothersarewritingon worldaffairs.Somereviewersarebeginningtoseesome ofthemaspreachmentsofLeftistdoctrines,andnotmereinformationalworks.Oneofthethingsthatlongstoodinthe wayofawakeningwhichsomeobservershopeisnowtaking place,-wasthefactthatitallseemedsounbelievable.Many Australianscouldnotunderstandhowfellow-Australians,and forthemostpartmenandwomenfavouredwithpublicprominence,largeincomesandnotalittleinfluence,couldembraceorservewithoutembracingthedoctrinesandruleof Communism.Muchofthisincredulityisnowbeingdissipated.

Aclearexplanationofthisenormuosinconsistencyishad inthefactthatthebreeding-spotofCommunismissecularism.Secularisminitsessentialsisacompoundorcombinationoftwothings.Theseare,first,indifferencetoGod andreligiqn;andsecond,disregardforthemorallaw,particularlyin.itsrequirementstouchingthebegettingandconservingofhumanlifeandtherespectingofhumandignity. Intheatmosphereofsecularism,Communismflourishes.In thebreeding-groundofsecularism,thecarriersofCommunism-party-members,fellow-travellers,parlourpinksand toutsfortotalitarianism-increaseandmultiplyandthreaten tofilltheearthandsubdueit.Alittlereflectionmakesthe wisdomofthisanalysisabundantlyclear.Communismrequiresasecularistoutlookinitsadherents.Secularismdoes breedCommunism.Andwehavemorethanourshareof secularism.ItexplainswhyCommunismandfellow-travellerismhavemanifestedthemselvesprincipallyinourso-called favouredclass.Themanofseculariststripeisnotdeeply enoughconcernedwithGodorreligionorvirtuetofindin theserealitiesdhisstrongguidanceofhiswayoflife.Heis nothorrifiedattheverysuggestionofatheismorawar againstreligion.Thatexplainshowitcanhappenhere.

ST.MARY'SBRANCH, LEEDERVILLE Bro.J,G.Casey.thePresident, presidedoverafairattendanceon 31stMay.TheclearanceofBro.G. HickeyfromSt.Mary'sBranch Kalgoorliewasaccepted.Itwasreportedthat27membersattendedthe BranchQuarterlyCommuniononthe precedingSunday.Afterthemeeting,ourNo1teamplayedHelpof ChristiansNo2teamatBadminton. Withthesetsequalthroughoutthe match.St.Maryswereluckyin winningthedecidingsetbyone point,afterbeingdown8-14.Both teamsexpressedtheirappreciation ofagoodmatch,anditwashoped thatmorefuturematcheswouldbe asevenlycontested.Atthenext meetingon28thJung,thisBranch willbeplayingSt.Bfigid'steamatBadminton.TheBranchalsoengages intheTableTennisandQuoits competitions.

Thenewposition(inthe groundsoftheChurch)ismuch moreconvenient.About100 newbookshavebeenaddedthis week,bringingthetotaltoover 2,100books.Ofthisnumber over1,800haveactuallybeen boughtasnewbooks,andtheremaining300weredonationsof usedbooksfromgenerousparishioners.

Severaldonationshavebeen reecivedtohelpdefraythecost ofthelatestparcelofbooks,and forthesetheLibrarycommittee isverygrateful. Subscriptionisonly10s.per yearperbook,andcanbepaid of2/6perquarter. Maowaswinedanddined;he wasshownthesightsoftheSovietcapital,takenonatripto Leningrad,and,uponhisreturn toMoscow,appearedatvarious festiveoccasionsatStalin'sside. Thepublicovations-obviously prearranged-whichgreetedMao whenhewenttotheMoscow Theatre,werelongandenthusiastic.SovietPresidentNikolaiShvernikgavehimasumptuousbanquetintheGreat KremlinPalace;allSovietnobilitywasthere:bemedalled marshalsandgenerals,members oftheSupremeSoviet,ministers anddiplomatsfromthesatellite States,accompaniedbytheir well-dressedladies.

Morethaneverbefore,MoscowwentoutofitswaytoemphasiseChina'sequalityand sovereigntywithintheCommunistfamilyofnations.Somuch hasbeensaidandwrittenabout theself-centredandnationalist attitudeoftheSovietGovernmentsinceTito'srebellionthat ithasbecomeanimportantpoliticaltasktorefutealltalkof Sovietimperialism.Itwaswith thisobjectiveinmindthatapart oftheSino-Sovietagreements wasmadepublicinMoscow.

NOTALLREVEALED.

Infact,theofficialtextofthe newSino-Soviettreaties,asreleasedtothepress,ismorein thenatureofacounter-propagandamovethanafactualreportonthenegotiationsand theirresults.Therearevague referencesintheofficialstatementtoan"exchangeofletters" aboutthereturntoChinaofindustrialequipmentremovedto RussiafromManchuriain194546.However,thelettersthemselvesremainsecret:thecostof thistransactiontotheChinese peoplemustnotberevealed. Norhasthenewtradeagreementbeenmadepublic,inspite oftheprolongedsessionswhich theconferenceofforeigntrade ministersfromthesatellite States(includingChina)heldin Moscow.Thediscussiontouchedontheexchangeofgoods withintheCommunist-controlledthirdoftheglobe,andRussia'scentralpositionasaclearing-housewasrecognised;itwas aforegoneconclusionthatthe middlemanwouldnotoperateto hisowndetriment.Thepublishedtext,however,contains onlythehintthatgoodswould betradedatpricesprevailingon the"worldmarket"(theYugoslaysaccusedtheSovietUnion ofusingforeigntradeasaninstrumentofexploitation)and thatcreditswouldbegrantedat theunusuallylowinterestrate of1percentayear(again,the YugoslayshadaccusedMoscow ofexactingusuriousinterest rates).

BEGINNINGS.

Whatthe'MarshallPlanwas doingforimpoverishedEurope, aStalinPlanwoulddofor China:thiswasthegreatexpectation.TheMarshallPlan wasadeviationfromcommercialprinciplesofgive-and-take; Americawasgivingwithoutreceivinggoodsorgoldinexchange.WhatMaofoundin Moscowwasratherdisappointing:inallcountriesoftheSovietsphere,Sovietagencieswere carryingoutaMarshallPlanin reverse-theyweretakinggoods andgivinglittleinexchange. SolongasMaoremainsaloyal Stalinist,ashowofmaintaining theintegrityofChinawillbe made.Stalinwillpretendto respectthesovereigntyofChina. Alltheseominoussignshave inducedCountSforzatomakehis reiteratedappealforapeacefulandfriendlysolutionofthe Triesteproblembydirectnegotiationbetweenthetwocountries,indicatingthatItalywould bewillingtoacceptcertaincorhaverecoursetoHimtoWhom wewishtoremainfaithfuleven untildeath.Butprayforus, pray,pray.

-HENRYNEWBOLT. rectionsofthezonalfrontier, providingthatthethree-Power declarationofMarch20th,1948, bywhichGreatBritain,the UnitedStatesandFrancecame outinfavourofthereturnof theentireFreeTerritoryto Italy,isacceptedasabasisfor furthernegotiations.Hemadeit clear,atthesametime,thatan understanding, ifreached, shouldserveasastarting-point forfurtheragreements,ofa widernature,betweenItalyand Yugoslavia.Buthehasbeen answeredbyoneofthemost viciousattacksdirectedbythe YugoslavPressagainstany Westernstatesmansincetheday whenYugoslaviawasexpelled fromtheCominform.Tanyug, theofficialnewsagency,said thathisoffersoffriendshipwere hypocriticalandthathisspeech hadbeenpromptedbychauvinism,andaleadingarticlein Borba,speakingof"Italianexpansionistclaims,"declaredthat Yugoslavia"didnotintendto buyanybody'sfriendshipatthe priceoftradingawayitslegitimateinterests,andleastofall byconcessionswhichwould meanrenouncingitsterritories anditsnationals."Triesteand Gorizia,itsays,are"ethnically, economicallyandhistorically" Yugoslay.

NOTGROUND,PEOPLE.

Butweoughtnottobecontenttoseetheissuesdiscussed intermsofthissort.Whatisin issueisnotterritorydisputed betweentwoStateswhichpresentalternativeclaimstoruleits CatholicpopulationofItalians andSlovenes;whatisinissueis whetheryetanothercornerof Europeshallpassfromthe Westtotheruleofaregime which,whateveritsrelations withMoscow,isessentiallyintolerableto,andintolerantof, thepeoplewholivethere.The greattestiswhatisdonetothe Church;andiftherearesome whoobjectthatpoliticalissues arethereinvolvedandthatthe ChurchrepresentsItalianatein-fluences(afoolishcontentionin thelandwhichproducedthe greatBishopStrossmaier,aprelateprominentattheVatican Council,whowasoneofthe makersofYugoslavialongbeforetheTreatyofVersailles), anequallydecisivetestisprovidedbythemannerinwhich educationisconducted.Here theclassictextsarestilltwo articleswhichappearedinthe BelgradeperiodicalSavremona Skolatowardstheendof1948sometimeagonow,butafter thebreachwiththeCominform, andnothinginthisfieldhas changedsince.

EDUCATIONFORSLAVERY.

tuitionwhichunitestheoryto practice,invisitstofactories andcontactwiththeworkers andtechnicians,andsoon,and thedevelopmentintheyoung oftheCommunistmorale,showingthemthatpatriotism,tobe genuine,mustbebelligerent; thatitmustbeplannedtolead tothestrugglebetweenthe classes.Inshort,twoobjectivespreoccupytheeducationistsof Tito'sregimeinYugoslavia:to ensureamethodicalindoctrinationwithMarxianprinciples,and toisolatetheschoolsfromany religiousinfluencewhichmight interferewiththatprocess.This programmewasembarkedupon longbeforethebreakwiththe Cominform,andithascontinued sincewithoutinterruption.The firststepwastheclosingofthe Catholicelementaryandintermediateschools,andofallboardingschoolsstaffedbyreligiousameasureaffectingthreehundredschoolsandmorethanforty thousandyoungpeople,who werethencompulsorilyenrolled intoCommunistyouthorganizations.

SUPERFICIALCLEAVAGE.

Nothingofallthishaschangedinoneiota.Nothinghas happenedtosuggestthatthe atheisticfoundationofTito'sregimeisbeingmodified.Nothing hashappenedtomakelifeeasier fortheChurch;onthecontrary, asreadershavelearned,since thebeginningofthisyearthe campaignagainsttheChurchhas beenintensified,withthearrests ofmanyofthechiefsurviving figuresinheradministrativelife: BishopsandVicars-General.At theendoflastmonth,whenthe InternationalCourtofJusticeat TheHaguesupportedtheview oftheWesternPowersaboutthe trialandimprisonmentofCardinalMindszenty,thejudgerepresentingYugoslaviawasassociatedwiththosefromtheSovietUnionandtheregimethat passesforPoland,inbringingin aminorityjudgment.Moscow andBelgrademaybefightinga coldwar,buttheirofficialjurists,schooledinthepeople's courts,stillagreewhenit comestosittinginjudgmenton aCardinal.

Thefirstarticlewasentitled "PoliticsandPedagogy,"andit declaredthatitisnotpossible toconceiveoftheschooloutside therealmsofpolitics.Pedagogy, inasmuchasitisthescienceof education,cannotbeanything buttheexpressionofthedesires ofthisorthatpoliticalclass. Thebourgeoisclass,mosthypocritically,hasalwaysusedthe schoolstosupportcapitalism againsttheworking-classworld, whileatthesametimeproclaimingitsdemocraticintentions.

Asfortheprivateschools,notablytheconfessionalschools, thearticlecontinues,theyhave neverbeendifferentfromthe bourgeoisschools.Inshort, faithfultoitstraditions,the bourgeoisiehasalwaysmade theschoolsserveitsselfish ends,"itsinterest,"asLenin said,"beingtokeeptheworkers inignoranceandtokeepfrom themeverythingwhichcould raisethemtoahigherculture." AwardsAnnounced:DecisionsNotPopular.

The1950DramaFestival,aneventofsomesignificance toamateursinthisState,hasnowcometoaclose.Forthe pastthreeweekstheAssemblyHall,Pier-street,hasbeenthe venuefortheatregoers,anditwasherethatproceedingswere finallywounduponSaturday,June10,when,ataconvention opentoseasonticket-holdersandmembersofthevarious clubs,thedecisionsofthepanelofadjudicatorsweremade public.

Thesedecisionsdidnotmeet withgeneralapproval.Assoon asthewinningplay-"The Father"(presentedbytheMercuryPlayers)-wasannounced, itwasevidentthatmanyregu- larpatronsoftheFestival weredisappointed.Consternationmountedwhenitwasrealisedthatmostoftheother awardshadalsogoneto"The Father."Theonlyimportant awardwhichdidnotgoto"The Father"wasthatofBestActress. ThiswasgiventoJeanLushey forherpartin"TheShadowof theVine"(IndependentPlayers)

Althoughithadbeenannouncedatthecommencement oftheFestivalthatfiveadjudicators(unknowntoeachother) wouldoperate,inactualfactowingtounforeseencircumstances,itwasstated-onlythree peopleofficiated.Theywere Mrs.NorahPrice,Mr.Malcolm Uren,andMr.CharlesLemon. Theycompiledpointsseparately, butmetandconferredatthe conclusionoftheFestival,and finallydeliveredaunanimous judgment.

"TheShadowoftheVine,"by BeverleyNichols,waspresented.

Theplaywaschieflyremarkablefortheveryfineworkof JamesJenkin,whoportrayeda derelictgentlemansomuchthe slaveofdrinkthatlifeinthe samehousewithhimbecamean unbearableburden.Hiswife's healthwasruined,andhissons' hopesofmakinggoodinthe worldwereblightedbythis ever-presentcurseofexcessive alcoholism.Inworkingoutthe detailsofhisstudyMr.Jenkins revealedahugecapacityfor takingpains,andifweventure theopinionthathefellshortof perfectionbyfailingtoadequatelyunderlinehiswickedness,wedonotintendthatsuch criticismshouldimpugnthein-

tegrityorsincerityofhisacting orblindanyonetothevalueof whatheachieved.

Thedreadfulscourgeofdrink runriotinthehomeisasubject whichcomesclosetothelivesof manypeople,particularlyAustralians.Itisasordidsubject forthestage,butafitsubject forthedramatist,whosebusinessitistoworkinemotions. Butbecausethematterisso hedgedaboutwithreality,itbecomesapointofexceptionalimportancethatthedelineationon stageshouldbeextremelyaccurate.Intheplayunderreview wedidnotwitnessenoughofthe horrorofdrinktofeelthatthe horrifiedreactionsoftheplayerswerejustified.

JeanLushey,asthewifewho bearspatiently,thoughinanguish,allthetrialsandhumiliationswhichcometoherasaresultofherhusband'slapses,was anappealingfigure,thoughnot anentirelycredibleone.She wasaltogethertooangelic,almostsaintly.Neverdidwesee herbreakingunderthestrain, andbecomingthusforusanobjectofdeepestpityinthosemomentsofhumanweakness.Had shebrokenbutonce,wecould havewatchedhertakeupher crossagainwithincreasedadmiration.Itistrue,ifIrememberrightly,thatsheshed tearsononeoccasion,butthere wasnothinggrandaboutherdefeat,nothingtopluckatthe heart-strings.

Asthetwosons,Malcolm KoshandDesmondProperjohn, wereproperninnies,warranting nosympathyandgettingnone.

BertVickers,asDr.Staines, gaveasmooth,relaxedperformance.Hisworkwasfullof merit.

JanetForbeswasplayedby EdnaHopkinswithquietefficiency,ifnotaltogetherwith sufficientcharm.Shewasmost effectiveinherclosingscene.

LauraWatkinswaseminently successfulasabusybody(Lady Hackbridge),andLorraineHeywoodwasthesweetestmaid-ofall-workseenonstageformany moons.

MoliereBroughtUptoDate

17th.centuryMoliere'may havepeereduneasilyfromhis window-seatineternityatthe doingsoftheUniversityPlayers whentheyburlesqued"LeMaladeIrhaginaire"lastweek;but being,asScottcalledhim,"the princeofcomicwriters,"he couldscarceforbeartosmile andmaybenodhisheadinapproval,atthedrolleriescommittedinhisname.

Hewouldhavebeenpuzzled bysomeunexpectedtwistsinhis plot,andacertainshiftofemphasismayhavevaguelyworriedhim,butaftermakingdue allowanceforthementality peculiartothe20th.centuryhe wouldprobablyhavejoinedin thegustsoflaughterwhichthis playaroused.Onefurtherreflection:wecanbesurethat Molierewouldfollowwithmixedfeelingstheperformanceof PeterCrabtreeasSirAlbert Argan,thehealthyinvalid;for itwaswhilstdoingtilispartthat hewasseizedwithconvulsions whichprovedtobetheprelude tohisdeath.

TheUniversityDramaticSociety'sfreetranslationof Molierehasbeencriticisedon thegroundsofunevennessand clashofmoods;Iwouldliketo commenditasacourageousand wittyapproachtotheproblem ofreconcilingoneagewithanother.Icensureitonlyfora somewhatunnecessarystressing ofcrudities,andIdeplorewith deepmoanthepainfullyweak tailing-offatthefinalcurtain. This,morethananythingelse, killedtheplay.TheNew Year'sEvefrolicwouldn'thave raisedabrayinadonkey.

THEACTING.

AnneManchestercarriedoff theactinghonourswithaclearcut,beautifullybalanced,nicely timedperformanceasToni,Mr. Argan'sunconventionalservant. Hervoicewasexcellent,her mannerfullofverve,herflair forfarceunfaltering.

Asthehypochondriac,Peter Crabtreewasenergeticandconsistent.Hisportraitsuffered fromalackoflightandshade.

JohnAdamsonandHarry Heseltinemadeadelightfulduo asnitwitfatherandson.Itwas mostconvincing-thoughmost unflatteringtomedicosand psychologists.ThebovineeffortsofThomasatlove-making weremuchappreciatedby everybodybuttheobjectofhis affections.

MarieAlbrecht,asBelle,was suitablyvoluptuous,andPam Kott,asAngela,suitablyangelic.JosephineThompsoncame inforspecialapplauseasthe youthfulLou.NevilleTeede wasstrangelyrestrictedasJohn (Argan'sbrother),ruininghis performancewithmonotonous repetitionsoftheonehandgesture.Othersintheplaywere DaleHarvey,CliveHart,Les MarchantandBrianWillis.A balletoffourmadetwobrief appearances.

Theyweretowearveils,stay halfanhour,andhadpromised, Iremember,nottoturntheir headsorshuffletheirfeet. NotonlywasIbitterlyjealous,Iwasindignant.Ifeltthat ifIwereintherealpresenceof

tryingtoexplainthatIwanted tobecomeaCatholic,andimploringhimtohelpme.

"Whydoyouwanttobecome aCatholic?"heasked."Are younotsatisfiedasyouare?"

Ihadnotexpectedtobeaskedthiskindofquestion,butalthoughIwasupsetandexcited myoldlongingcametome again. "IwantJesusintheBlessed Sacrament,"Isaid.

Thepriestseemedtothinkit wasagoodanswer,andnot manyweekslaterIreceived Jesusforthefirsttime.Itwas verywonderful.

Iamnobetterthanothers, butIcannotunderstandwhy anybodyshouldmissanopportunitytogotoHolyCommunion. Itdoesnotmakesense.IadmitthatIdonotfeelthefull gloryofHisPresencewhenI receive.Sometimesmysoulis asdryasdust.Butwhenthere isachanceoffeedingonthereal BodyandBloodofGoditseems againstreasontorefuseit.

JesusChristIwouldkneelfor hourswithoutmoving. Irememberstandingoutsidethe Church,fulloflongingandcuriosity,butIdarednotgoin.I felt,inaconfusedkindofway, thatifmyownChurchnever hadJesusHimself,Iwasnotfit togoinandvisitHim.Istood outside,andIrememberfeeling happyinthethoughtthatHe wasdividedfrommebyamere woodendoor.

ThenthetimeofmyProtestantconfirmationdrewnear.I wasnotquitesixteen,andaccordingtocustomhadnotyet hadHolyCommunion.Ihad neverbeenveryfullyinstructed intheProtestantcreed,and whatIbelievedcamemostly fromtheGospels.ButnowI attendedaclass. Iwasvery excitedabouttheCommunion, becausethewords-ThisisMy Flesh-ThisisMyBlood-seemedveryclearanddefinite. DoubtsabouttheProtestantreligionhadbotheredmeforsome time,butnowtheysettledthemselves.Itmustbeallrightif JesuscameHimselfintothe BreadandWine.

Andthencamebitterdisillusionment!Oneofthegirlsin theConfirmationclassraisedthe pointofthePresence,andthe answerwas-No!Certainlynot! Itwasblasphemoustobelieve breadcouldchangeintothereal BodyandBloodofChrist.Communionwascompletelyaspiritualthing.

IbelievedwhatIwastold,but withwhatdisappointment! I feltitwasallwrong,andthe strangethingisthatalthoughI ceasedtobelievethatJesuswas reallypresentintheProtestant Communion,Istillbelievedthat HecameHimselftoCatholics!I wondereddidtheyeverreally knowhowfortunatetheywere. IwantedJesusChrist'sFlesh andBlood,butIcouldnothave them.

FrequentlyIhavereceivedin hospitals,whereitwasGod's WillthatIshouldsuffersomethingfortheGraceIhadbeen granted.IlovedthoseCommunions.JesuscomestoHis sickinaverywonderfulway.I found,however,arathersurprisingreluctanceonthepartof myfellowCatholicstoreceivein ahospital.Theysaidthey wouldwaituntiltheygotout, thattheydidn'tfeelthesame aboutitwhentheywereinbed, thattheycouldn'tprepareproperly,thattheyhadnotbeenill enoughtoreceiveGodin15'ed.I simplycannotunderstandthat attitude,possiblythroughmy ownblindness.Ifyouareill, Godwillhelpyoutoprepare,or willdoitallHimselfifyoucan donomorethanwillit.Besides,whoiseverprepared?It isanalmostincrediblecondescensioneverytimeJesuslieson thetongueofoneofHiscreatures.
