Inconjunctionwiththeworld-widecelebrationofFlorenceNightingaleSunday,thethirdannualGeneralCommunionoftheCatholicNurses'GuildwasheldonSunday lastatSt.Mary'sCathedral.Itwasaveryedifyingscene asonehundredandthirty-twonursesapproachedtheAltar RailstoreceivefromthehandsoftheirChaplain,Rev.Father McSweeney,theBody'andBloodoftheGreatestHealerthe worldhaseverknown.

Thestarchedcapsandveils, blueandwhiteuniformsofthe nurses,madeavividsplashof colourintheCathedralandin theprocessionfromthegatesof VictoriaSquareConventtothe mainentranceoftheCathedral.

Theoccasionalsermonwas preachedbyRev.FatherDunphy,C.SS.R.Takingashistext:

Yearsago,inPerth,therewas screenedasilentpicture,one detailofwhichisevennow freshinmymindasIspeak.It wasnight,coldandwintry,the darknessintense,untilinthe distancetherecamealight,leapinganddancinginthehandsof onewhocarriedit,lightingup thesceneandrevealingsufferinghumanityintheformofsoldiersoftheCrimea.Florence Nightingale,LadyoftheLamp, wasatherworkofnursing.A simplescene,andyetonethat

Duringthefunction,Father Abramoaddressedthosepresent. Heexplainedthereasond'etre oftheAssociationamnogthe Italianpeople,andthevarious activitiesthattheAssociation hadinmindtoundertake.Activitiesconcerningthemoraland religiouswelfareoftheItalian communityinAustralia,activitiesforhelpingthenewimmigrants,activitiesregarding sport(soccer.football,games, picnics,anddramaticsociety), activitiesofculture(art,science,monthlymagazineand library),activitiesforpropaganda(atpresentthrough"The Record"andtheItalianpaper, "TheFlame").

Afterhavinginvokedthe blessingofGod,theprotection oftheHolyFather,andofHis GracetheArchbishop,andwishingthenewAssociationevery success,FatherAbramoconcludedbymakinganappealto youngItalianboystojointhe Society,tobestrongCatholics andloyalcitizensofthenew countrytheyhadadopted.

Aninterestingfeatureofthe religiouslifeintheprisonisthe specialCatholicActionAssociationfoundedbytheprisoners themselves.Rememberingthat St.Paultoowasaprisoner,they chosethisSaintaspatronand titularoftheirassociation.

"AsaCatholiclayman,withhascausedhisresignation.The myfullrightsofconscienceand duty,Icouldnotallowthat statementtopassunchallenged. Ididnotattackthemember concerned,andItooknopartin theelections.Iexpresseda pointofviewwhichmanythousandsofcitizenswhobelievein religiousdenominationsteachingcompletelyagreewith."

ThatstatementbyMrs.Braddock,whichstartedthecontroversy,wasmadeatanelection meetinginherconstituency, whenshesaid:"Ihopethe Churchwillbesensibleandnot askyoutodosomethingyou feelyoushouldnotdo."

Shealsotoldthemeetingshe hadwrittentothereligiousauthoritiesandthatsince"they havenotbeenpressingthismatterofvotingforaTory."

Replyinginthelocalpressto theseremarks,AldermanHogan describedMrs.Braddock'ssuggestiontotheChurchas-anastonishingapproachtoanissue transcendingmaterialmatters."

SAILSTOSEESISTER'SCANONISATION

UnionCity,N.J.(NC).-AmanwhocamehereasanimmigrantfromItalyandwhohaslivedinobscurityinasmall NewJerseyvillagefor44years,hassuddenlybeencatapultedintothenews.HesailedforRometo-daytoattendthe canonisation,onJune25.ofhissister,BlessedMariaGoretti, "VirginMartyrofthe20th.Century."

HeisAngeloGoretti,60.adyeworkerofNewVillage, N.J.,whocametothiscountryin1906,fouryearsafterthe martyrdomofhis11-year-oldsisteratthehandsofasex murderer.

Mr.Gorettiwillattendthe canonisationwiththemembers ofhisfamilylivinginItaly:his 85-year-oldmother,Mrs.As. suntaGoretti;twosisters,Mrs. ErciliaPorfiliaandSisterTeresa,oftheFranciscanMissionarySistersofMary,andabrother,MariaGoretti.

ForMrs.Gorettiitwillbean unparalleledexperience:amotherwitnessingthecanonization ofherowndaughter.

Canonizationofthechild martyrhasbeensponsoredby thePassionistFathers,commissionedbytheHolyFatherto promotedevotiontoBlessed Maria,whoisburiedinthe PassionistchurchofNettuno, Italy,wheresheattendedMass.

OnthedaythatBlessedMaria iselevatedtosainthood,Mr. Goretti'ssevenchildrenwillbe guestsatdinnerofthePassionistFathersatSt.Michael's Monasteryhere.

BeforeheleftforRome,Mr. Gorettitoldthestoryofhis sister'sdeathtotheRev.Alfred MacConastair,C.P.,ofthemonasteryhere.Herecountedthe bitterpovertyoftheGorettisin thePontineMarshdistrictsouth ofRome,madehardertobear bytheconductoftheSerenellis, GiovanniandhissonAlexander, whomadelifeatortureforthe widowandherthreesonsand threedaughters. Hedescribedhowhisbrave youngersisterMariatookcare ofthehouse,thoughshewas onlynine,whilehermother workedinthefields.Hesaid thatherfirsteffortsatcooking oftenendedinfailure,butthat shewasneverdiscouraged. Therecouldbenoparityinthevenerationaccordedahuman creature,howeverperfect,andthatofferedtoHimWhoisthe sourceofallperfection.TheProtestantsfailedtoseethat Mary'sglorywasallreflective.Onecouldnotevenbegin tothinkofherworthexceptintermsofthe.marvellousprivilegeandfavourswhichGodadconferredonher.

Thenon-CatholicrejectionofMaryisaverydifficult matterforCatholicstounderstand.Ithasaboutitanote ofchildishpetulance,asisillustratedintheobjectionstothe Rosary(tenHailMarystooneOurFather).Hadtheyever botheredtoanalysetheAve(whichtheysingreadilyenough atsentimentalmoments),theymighthavebeenstartledto realisethatthefirstsentencewascomposedbytheBlessed TrinityanddeliveredbyanArchangel.Thesecondsentence wasutteredbyaSaintundertheinspirationoftheHoly Ghost.BotharetobefoundintheBible,whichtheyclaim asthesoleruleoffaith.Thethirdandlastsentenceofthe AvewascomposedbytheChurch,andpetitionsMary,as MotherofGod,tointercedeforuswhoaresinners.Ina certainsensethisformofaddresstoOurLadyisderogatory, asitiswhenwespeakofamanashisfather'sson.But actuallyitmerelyclarifiesthetruepositionofOurLadyin theCatholicschemeofthings.Sheherselfsaidwithhumility,andthereforewithtruth,thatshewasthe"handmaidof theLord."

Thefactis,ofcourse,thata non-memberoftheCommunist Partycandoasmuchdamage tothesecurityoftheUnited Statesasapartymeniber.Conceivably,hecandomore.And inamoresinistermanner.

InValdagnosincethewarthe Counthasbuiltmanyblocksof housesandapartmentstorent tohisworkmen.Hehasalso builtamodern,well-equipped hospital,anurseryforthechildrenofmotherswhowork,a school,anathleticstadium,a gymnasiumwithabigswiming pool.Fortheuseofthese,workerspayasmallsum.

By1947Marzottowasready tobeginhiscontributiontoward solvingItaly'slandproblem. Hedecidedtoorganizeand operateapilotproject-toshow howitmightbedone.Onthe flatplainsnorthofVenicehe acquiredtwotracts,oneof3500 acres.theother2500.Thefirst waslandalreadyfarmed,the 4 secondamalarialsaltmarsh. Thefarmingtract,whichhe calledTorresella,nowproduces wheat,corn,flax,sugarbeets, fruit,dairyproducts.Morethan athousandworkersmakealivingfromitandrelatedenterprises.Partofthemareona share-croppingbasis,afarmto eachfamily.Othersworkfora dailywage. VATICANCITY,April17(Radio).-TheVaticanPress Officehasissuedastatementdeclaringthat"nothingisknown here"regardingthereportedagreementbetweentheChurch andStateinCommunistPoland.Thestatementaddsthat "thecircumstancesandthecontentoftheagreementinquestiondemonstratethereport'slackoffoundation."

AllPolishpapersgavefrontpageplaytoastoryreleasedby heofficialPolishPressAgency announcinga19-pointagreementreachedbythejointcommissionofthePolishgovernmentandthePolishHierarchy, itwasreported.NoconfirmationoftheagreementwasreportedfromanyofficialCatholicsourceinPoland.According tothePolishPressAgency storytheagreementwassigned onApril.14,thedayafterHis EminenceAdamCardinalSapieha,ArchbishopofCracow leftforRome. Thereportedaccordstates thatthePolishBishopswould giveindirectsupporttothe regimeinitsprogrammeofcollectivizing'allfarms.Another pointofthereportedagreement obligestheChurchtocombat the"criminalactivity"ofundergroundbandsandtopunish canonicallyallpriestsguiltyof suchcrimes.
