Thestarchedcapsandveils, blueandwhiteuniformsofthe nurses,madeavividsplashof colourintheCathedralandin theprocessionfromthegatesof VictoriaSquareConventtothe mainentranceoftheCathedral.

TheChurchdevotestheentiremonthofMaytothevenerationofOurLady.ThehonourpaidtoMaryhasbeenin thereallyProtestantpastthechiefsourceofscandaltononCatholicsamongthepracticesoftheFaith.TheMassthey regardedasablasphemy,variousoftheSacramentsasmerely humaninnovations,variouspracticesassheersuperstition, buttheworshipoftheVirginwastothemparamountlyevil, foritamountedtonothinglessthanidolatry.Yetallthe confusionwasontheirside.Therehasneverbeenthe slightestperplexityintheCatholicheartoverthepositionof OurLady.ThemostignorantCatholicknowsthatthehonourpaidtoMaryisofadifferentkindfromthatpaidtoGod. Therecouldbenoparityinthevenerationaccordedahuman creature,howeverperfect,andthatofferedtoHimWhoisthe sourceofallperfection.TheProtestantsfailedtoseethat Mary'sglorywasallreflective.Onecouldnotevenbegin tothinkofherworthexceptintermsofthe.marvellousprivilegeandfavourswhichGodadconferredonher.
Evennon-Christianmen,whodonotbelieveintheDivinityofChrist,butatleastinHisperfectionasaMan,haVe beenabletoappreciatetosomeextentfromanaturalviewpointthenecessaryworthofHisMother.Suchamanas Wordsworthspokeofheras"ourtaintednature'ssolitary boast,"and"notunforgiventoherasuppliantkneemight bend."Thisispossible,naturally..Maryiscalled,among Catholics,"OurLady,"for,asChestertonsaid."Shewas ours."andasananonymouspoethundredsofyearsbefore beautifullyexpressedit:"WellmightsuchaLadyGod's Motherbe."Butwhatissplendidtothemerenaturalmind ofman,isofalmostunbearablebrilliancetotheeyesoffaith. ForMaryistheMotherofGod,foundworthytoconceiveand tobeartheSaviouroftheworld.Whatpresumptionwill denyherhonouruponwhomGodhaslavishedthisincredible dignity?SmallwonderthantheChurchhasneverwearied inveneratingherwhomitsFounderraisedtosuchheights thatman'smostexaltedpraiseofherislike"abeggar's rhymein'thegutter."
Thenon-CatholicrejectionofMaryisaverydifficult matterforCatholicstounderstand.Ithasaboutitanote ofchildishpetulance,asisillustratedintheobjectionstothe Rosary(tenHailMarystooneOurFather).Hadtheyever botheredtoanalysetheAve(whichtheysingreadilyenough atsentimentalmoments),theymighthavebeenstartledto realisethatthefirstsentencewascomposedbytheBlessed TrinityanddeliveredbyanArchangel.Thesecondsentence wasutteredbyaSaintundertheinspirationoftheHoly Ghost.BotharetobefoundintheBible,whichtheyclaim asthesoleruleoffaith.Thethirdandlastsentenceofthe AvewascomposedbytheChurch,andpetitionsMary,as MotherofGod,tointercedeforuswhoaresinners.Ina certainsensethisformofaddresstoOurLadyisderogatory, asitiswhenwespeakofamanashisfather'sson.But actuallyitmerelyclarifiesthetruepositionofOurLadyin theCatholicschemeofthings.Sheherselfsaidwithhumility,andthereforewithtruth,thatshewasthe"handmaidof theLord."
Now,sinceallherdignityandworthderivesolelyfrom hercompleteandutterdependenceofherSon,itissurpassing strangethatthe"Reformers"andtheirmoderndisciples shouldhavemadeheranobjectofdread,asisindicatedin Chesterton'sbeautifullines:

Thefactis,ofcourse,thata non-memberoftheCommunist Partycandoasmuchdamage tothesecurityoftheUnited Statesasapartymeniber.Conceivably,hecandomore.And inamoresinistermanner.
