Thepeopleonbothsidesof theSierrad'Airewerefolkof simpleandstrongfaith.Godwas closetothemastheytended theirflocks,tilledtheirfields,or kepttheirhumblehomes.AsI recallitnow,thereactiontothe rumoursofOurLady'svisitationwasanfeelingofdeep wonder.Therewascuriosity,too, Isuppose.Buttherewasno questioningofthefactthatOur LadycouldappearifGodwantedherto,suchasonefindsin peoplewhodonottakethesupernaturalforgranted.Ifthere wasneedforOurLadytoappear,theninallprobabilityshe hadappeared.Andifshechose theobscurevillageofFatima insteadofthegreatcitiesof LisbonorCoimbra,itwaspossiblybecauseshehadbeenso muchathomeinBethlehemand Nazareth.Atanyrate,every monthpeoplewereflockingto Fatima,totheCovadaIria,to praytheRosarywiththe childrenwhohadseenand talkedwithOurLady.Ecclesiasticalauthorityhadmadenopronouncementontheevents,but hadkepttheprudentreserve whichtheChurchalways observestowardssuchhappenings.Neverthelessthepeople instinctivelyandimmediately realisedthattheincidentwas supernaturalandtheywerenot deceived.
TheCovadaIria,closetothe littlevillageofFatima,wasa barrenandrockydepressionin whichgrewsomescrubbyoaks andolivetrees.Inthosedaysit wasadesertedandsolitary place.Occasionallysheepgrazed amongtherocksorfedonthe acornsthatfellfromthetrees.

Atlastonedaythenewscame fromacrossthemountainsthat theshepherdchildrenwhohad witnessedtheapparitionswere tobecalledtotheparishhouse ofFatimatobequestionedand examinedbypriestsappointed bytheBishop.Therewasgreat excitementinourvillageof Reichida.Perhapsonemight havetheopportunitytoseeand speaktotheunknownchildren whowerethecentreofthe wonderfuleventsofFatima!
