Spendercouldnotabidethe liberal,individualisticsocietyin whichthehave-notswereso numerousanddestituteandinsecure. Allthen,hadthisincommon -thattheyreprobatedasocial systemriddenwithinequityand iniquity.Suchasystemthey couldnotsupport,andthey soughtareplacement.Communism,itseemed,wastheperfectanswer,apanacea.Under it,allmenwereequal,allmen werefree:therewasplentyfor all,justiceforall;political,socialandeconomicproblems werepermanentlyandideally solved.Morethanthat,under itthn-ewasabrotherhoodof men.
AWAKENING.
Eachofthewriterskeenlyfelt thelonelinessofmodernman, hisisolation,hisdeprivationof anything,likeagenuinehuman community.This,too,they thought.Communismprovided. Someofthem,moreover,hada senseofguiltbecauseoftheadvantagesoverthepoorwhich theyenjoyed;tosubmitandto sacrificeinthecauseofthepro- letariatappealedtothemasan expiationandareparation.Still againinanageofrelativismin truthandcrazyfluctuationin values,theywereinsearchof anabsolutismacceptabletomaterialistsoftheirseveraldegreesofmaterialism. Theopposingfaction,ledby Berle,wasnot4/allhostileto theSovietUnionbutventured tohintatdoubtsastowhether itsspiritofco-operationwasnot atriflebelowall-outfriendliness.
Theoppositionwasstrong enough,Berlecontinuedineffect,andsufficientlyardentin theSovietcause,tobrushhim outofdiplomaticlifebyway ofdemotiontotheambassadorshipinBrazil.Thatwashispenaltyforhavingdaredevento questiontheattitudeofMoscow.

TherearesignsthatStalin hasconstruedthesurrenderof theWesternpoyersinChinaas anotherMunich,flashingthe greenlightforhislong-revolvingplantohurlaComunistGermanarmyfromtheEastupon WestGermanyinacampaignof "national liberation."With MarxismontheRhine,France wouldbeexpectedtocollapse, andwithitallthatremainsof freeEurope.
