ThesemenareeitherformerCommunistsorformerfellow travellers.Heretheyaretellingwhytheyjoined,orinformallycommittedthemselvesto,theCommunistParty, andwhytheylater-brokewithit.

Theirconfessionsmadearevealingandimportantdocument..Butinitthereconstantlycropsuptheassertionthat joiningtheCommunistParty andjoiningtheCatholicChurch areexactlyalike,thatCommunismandtheChristianGod havemuchincommon.How anyoneofintelligencecould compareeitherpair,itisimpossibletosee.Butmoreofthat later.

FischerwaspassionatelysympathetictotheCommunistcause forfifteenyearsorso,Gidefor aboutadecade,Koestlerspent ayearintheSovietUnion,FischerwasthereasanAmerican correspondentformanyyears, SilonewenttoMoscowonParty business,andGidemadeatour ofthecountryin1936.Wright andSpenderaretheonlyones whohavenotsetfootinStalin's domain.

REVOLT.

AllwereattractedtoCommunismafterdisillusionment withtheideasandpracticeof theWesternWorld.Wrightis anAmericanNegro,whoraginglyresentedthedisgraceful treatmentofhispeopleinthe landoffreedomandequality. Fischerwasappalledbythe bankruptcyoftheWestinthe wakeofthefirstWorldWar. Koestlerwassickenedbythe derangementofGermanyinthe twentiesandthirties.Gide wasrevoltedbytheinhumanity andsocialinjusticehesawat homeandabroad.Silonelongedtoabolishthefeudalsocial orderandthegrindingpoverty inwhichhegrewupinItaly.

Spendercouldnotabidethe liberal,individualisticsocietyin whichthehave-notswereso numerousanddestituteandinsecure. Allthen,hadthisincommon -thattheyreprobatedasocial systemriddenwithinequityand iniquity.Suchasystemthey couldnotsupport,andthey soughtareplacement.Communism,itseemed,wastheperfectanswer,apanacea.Under it,allmenwereequal,allmen werefree:therewasplentyfor all,justiceforall;political,socialandeconomicproblems werepermanentlyandideally solved.Morethanthat,under itthn-ewasabrotherhoodof men.

AWAKENING.

Eachofthewriterskeenlyfelt thelonelinessofmodernman, hisisolation,hisdeprivationof anything,likeagenuinehuman community.This,too,they thought.Communismprovided. Someofthem,moreover,hada senseofguiltbecauseoftheadvantagesoverthepoorwhich theyenjoyed;tosubmitandto sacrificeinthecauseofthepro- letariatappealedtothemasan expiationandareparation.Still againinanageofrelativismin truthandcrazyfluctuationin values,theywereinsearchof anabsolutismacceptabletomaterialistsoftheirseveraldegreesofmaterialism. AndsotheyjoinedtheParty itselforitsfringes.Butnot forlong.Eachinhisownway andtimerecognisedthathehad pledgedhimselfnotaradicalrevolutionwhichwouldbringenlightenment,liberty,plentyand socialstabilitytothemassesof men,but,rather,toasavage, reactionary,anti-humandictatorshipinwhichagoodend alwaysjustifiesevilmeans.The questionofendsandmeansfiguresinalmostalltheseessays, andtheviewofthevariouscontributorsisprobablybestputby Fischer:"Immoralmeansproduceimmoralends-andimmoralpersons-underBolshevismandundercapitalism."

HYPNOTISM

Itisinterestingtonotethata groupofHarleyStreetspecialistshaveaskedtheBritishGovernmenttolegislateagainstthe useofhypnotismexceptbyfully traineddoctors.Theyaredoingthisinviewof"theincreasingevidenceofmentalharm followingexhibitionsofstage andamateurhypnotism."

ThewritersbrokewithCommunism.Butitissignificant thatthosewhowereParty membersstillarenotfreeof itsspell.Theyregrettheirlost certitude,theirshatteredfellowship,theirvanishedexpectationsofanimminentnew dayofrighteousorderintent onlyonpowerthoughitwore themaskofbenevolence.

Alltheseintellectualsdiscoveredthat,havingsubmittedto Stalin,theywereexpectedto abandonindependentthought, criticaljudgment,andcommon honesty.Theywouldbetold preciselywhattothink,down tothelastdetail.Theywould takeordersastowhatthey wouldsayandhowthey wouldsayit.Theywould,asa matterofcourse,lieoutrageouslybutunblushinglyinthe Party'sinterest.Thistheycould notendure.Nomorecould theyenduretheassumption

All/thesewritersexpress,in onewayoranother,theirrejectionoforthodoxChristianityasapowerforbettering theworld.Ashasbeensaid, theylikenittoCommunism. Intheirview,itdemandsfor itsacceptanceasurrenderor betrayalofreason.WrightreferstoChristiandoctrineas "myths"an"legends,"while Gideholdsareligiousconversiontobeanactof"sentimentality"andFischermaintains thatareligiousconversionis "impervioustologicalargument."

PREPOSTEROUS

Silonelearnedhiscatechism asachild,buthasevidently madenostudyofCatholicism withamatureandopenmind. Theothersappeartotally unacquaintedwithit.Ifthey hadaglimmeringoftheCatholicconceptofthehuman person,hisidentity,destiny andworth,theycouldnot writeofitastheydonorcould they/committheabsurderror ofstylingitinanyprofound mannercothparabletoCommunism.Communismis.notagod thatfailedbutaswindlefrom thestart.'

RichardCrossman,whoeditedthebook,assertsthatCatholicismdeniesitsadherents spiritualfreedomandthuspre- paresthemforCommunism. Hemighthavenoticed,surely, thatGide,SpenderandWright allhavestrongProtestantantecedents.Theregoesanother preposteroustheory!

Incidentslikethesearetelltaleflashesuponthelandscape offoreignaffairsunderthe RooseveltandTrumanadministrations.Thegeneralsurvey whichfollowswillimpugnno motivesandassessnojudgments-thoughitappearsmanifestthatthestatesmenconcernedhavewroughtharmto theircountry,wittinglyorunwittingly,beyondthemosttraitorousdreamsofBenedictArnold.

HEADLONGTUMBLE.

But,whentheeyeturnsfrom specialpleadingstoassured,notoriousfacts,therestartsinto viewalineofconductasdistinctandunswervingasatraffic bandonamotorhighway.Itis asifVyacheslavM.Molotovor AndreiVishinskihadbeenSecretaryofStatesinceJune, 1941,andhadordainedthisdirective,tobepursuedatall costs: "ThesettledpolicyoftheUnitedStatesshallbetoaidand abettheSovietUnionincreatingvacuumsofpowerforoccupationbyCommunism."

Theopposingfaction,ledby Berle,wasnot4/allhostileto theSovietUnionbutventured tohintatdoubtsastowhether itsspiritofco-operationwasnot atriflebelowall-outfriendliness.

Theoppositionwasstrong enough,Berlecontinuedineffect,andsufficientlyardentin theSovietcause,tobrushhim outofdiplomaticlifebyway ofdemotiontotheambassadorshipinBrazil.Thatwashispenaltyforhavingdaredevento questiontheattitudeofMoscow.

Claremontparishwasanideal settingforthefirstN.C.G.M.Y.C.W.CombinedConferencefor 1950,onSunday,March26th. Approximately150Movement membersattended,andwewere verypleasedandappreciativeof thefactthatmanybranchChap- lainswerepresentalso.

TheConferencecommenced withanintroductorytalkonthe theme,"TheDignityofMarriage,"byRev.FatherJ.Griffin. Discussiongroupsthenworked onthefirstsectionofthetheme, whichwas"Marriage-aVocation."

Afterlunch,theConference resumed,withtheDiocesan Chaplain,Dr.Sullivan,givinga briefexplanationofthepoints fortheseconddiscussion."Marriage,aSacrament."

Followingthesumming-upby Dr.Sullivan,memberswentto St.Thomas'Church,wherethe RosarywassaidandBenedictionoftheBlessedSacrament given.
