CANNIBALISM!

Ihavealetterthisevening fromagentlemansigninghimself"Nescio,TamenFidelis."

Hereitis:

DearFather, ThemoreoftenIreceive HolyCommunion, themoreI amconfrontedwiththeidea ofcannibalism.Wouldyou pleasejustifytheideaor condemnit.

A.:Manythanks,Sir,for yourletter.Youhaveputyour difficultybrieflyandclearly.It maybeacomforttoyoutoknow thatyourdifficultyisaveryold one,havingoccurredtothe mindsofthefaithfulatvarious timesfromtheverybeginning oftheChurch'sHistory.OurDivineLordHimselfwasconfrontedwithitbytheJews,when Hepromisedtogivethemthe BlessedEucharist.St.John,in thesixthchapterofhisgospel, givesusHisanswertoit,which Ishallreadpresently.

ButbeforeIreadit,letme firstsay,forthesakeofclarity, thattherearetwopossibleways ofmeetingthisdifficulty.These twosolutionswouldremoveany suggestionofcannibalismfrom thereceptionofHolyCommunion.

FIGURATIVE?

Thefirstsolutionisgivenby Protestants,butiscondemned bytheteachingoftheCatholic Church.IshallquoteGodet, whogivesthisexplanationin hiscommentary,'TheGospelof St.John'Vol.IIp.459."Toeat thefleshofChrist,accordingto Protestants,istocontemplate theholylifeoftheLordandto receivethislifefromtheHoly Spiritinordertoreproduceit inourownlives;todrinkHis bloodistocontemplateHis violentdeathbyfaith,making itourransomandappropriating toourselvesHisefficaciousexpiation."

Needlesstosay,thissolution, ifitwerethecorrectone,would removeanyideaofcannibalism fromHolyCommunion,sinceit givestoChrist'swordsonlya figurativemeaning.

Thesecondsolution,theCatholicone,givestoChrist's words,theirliteralmeaning. AccordingtoCatholics,thereal BodyofChristisreceivedin HolyCommunion,butItisnot receivedinthegrossmannerin whichcannibalsreceivethe bodiesofthosewhomtheyeat.

GREATDIFFERENCE.

Cannibalseatthefleshof theirvictimsinexactlythe samephysicalwaythatweeat ourordinarymeals,namelyby crushingthedeadfleshbetween theirteeth,swallowingitand assimilatingitintotheirown bodies.ButthefleshfChrist, receivedinHolyCommunion,is thelivingChrist,trueGodand trueMan,Whositsattheright handofHisFatherinHeaven, butmadesacramentallypresent toustobeourfood.Heisnot eatenafterthegrossphysical mannerfoundamongcannibals. Heiseatensacramentally.His bodyisnotcrushedbetween ourteethinordertobeswallowedandassimilatedintoour ownbodies.ByreceivingHim inHolyCommunionHeisnot changedorassimilatedbyus,it isratherHe.Whochangesus andassimilatesusintoHimself. Whileinsisting,therefore,that intheBlessedEucharist,wereceivethetrueandlivingChrist, 'WhoisattherighthandofHis Father,wemustalsoinsistthat Heisnoteateninanygross physicalmanner,butratherin aspiritualmannerbyfaiththat workethbycharity.

CHRIST'SSOLUTION.

Ishallnowreadthesolution asitisgivenbyOurLord Himself.Youwillfinditinthe sixthchapterofSt.John'sGospel,beginningatverse51.

"Iamthelivingbreadwhich camedownfromheaven.Ifany maneatofthisbread,heshall liveforever;andthebreadthat Iwillgive,ismyfleshforthe lifeoftheworld.

TheJewsthereforestrove amongthemselves,saying:How canthismangiveushisfleshto eat?

(LetmeinterjectheretoremarkthattheJewshaveput yourdifficultytoOurLord,ListencarefullytoHissolutionand youwillfindthatHefirstrejectsthesolutionwhichwasto begivenlaterbytheProtestants.)

"ThenJesussaidtothem: Amen,amenIsayuntoyou: Exceptyoueatthefleshofthe SonofMan,anddrinkhisblood, youshallnothavelifeinyou. Hethateatethmyflesh,and drinkethmyblood,hatheverlastinglife:andIwillraisehimup inthelastday.Formyfleshis meatindeed:andmybloodis drinkindeed.Hethateatethmy flesh,anddrinkethmyblood, abidethinmeandIinhim.As thelivingFatherhathsentme, andIlivebytheFather;sohe thateatethmethesamealso shalllivebyme.Thisisthe breadthatcamedownfrom heaven.Notasyourfathersdid eatmannaandaredead.He thateateththisbreadshalllive forever."

NOAMBIGUITY.

Nowwhenweconsiderthis answergiventotheJewsby OurDivineLord,wemustkeep inmindthatHeistryingtodevelopandmakeclearerHis words,whenHesaid,"The breadthatIwillgive,ismy fleshforthelifeoftheworld."

NowsupposingthatHewished ustoaccepttheProtestantexplanationofthesewords,by whichChristisnotreallyand substantiallypresentinthe BlessedEucharist,butisthere onlyvirtually,ormysticallyor symbolically,couldHehave usedtermsmoreobscurein ordertogiveHistruemeaning?

Ontheotherhand,supposeHe wasteachingtheCatholicdoctrineoftheBlessedEucharist, couldHehaveusedtermsthat wereclearer,moreprecise, moreenergetic...Imightsay morerealistic?Insteadofgivingafigurativeinterpretation of"eatinghisflesh"Herepeats "eatingHisfleshanddrinking Hisblood"ninetimesinfour verses. Buttocutshortdefinitelyany suchfigurativeinterpretation, Hesaysthatthefleshofthe SonofManisrealfood,andHe comparesittothemannawhich fedtheIsraelitesinthedesert. Mysteriouswords,youwill say...doubtless,butonecannot suppressthemysterybyanexplanationthatisnotonlymore mysteriousbutimpossible.

OBJECTIONSOVERRULED. PerhapsProtestantswillsay thatthisanswerofChristis onlyanaffirmationofwords whichamongJewsboreafigurativemeaning. Itistruethatamongthe Jews, theexpression,"eatingor devouringsomeone"hadametaphoricalsense.Butthisisto benoted:suchanexpressionis foundonlyinafewpoetical passageswherethereisno dangerofambiguityastoits

meaning,andthatmeaningis oneofhatredofone'senemies, asforexampleinPsalm26 verse2,"Whilstthewicked drawnearagainstmetoeatmy flesh."

Theexpression"eatingone's flesh"whenusedmetaphorically is (i)Alwaysusedtosignifya wickedaction.

(ii)Itisapoeticalexpression andthecontexthastobe preparedfor it.

(iii)ItisneverusedinGreek withtheGreekverb"esthein" meaning"toeat"whichSt. Johnuses.Norisiteverfound parallelwiththeverb"to drink"whichwealsofindin St.John.

(iv)St.Johnalsousesanother Greekverb,"trogein"four timesintheseverses,and thisverbisalwaysusedinits propersense,notmetaphorically,toexpresseatingwhen itisfoundbesidetheGreek verbfordrinking.

Again,itmaybeobjected that,sincetheBlessedEucharisthadnotyetbeeninstituted, noonewhowaslisteningto ChristcouldpossiblyundertandHiswordsintheCatholic sense.Itisquitetruethatno one,noteventhetwelveApostles,wasabletounderstandhow HecouldgiveHimselftobetheir food:butthereisnodoubt whateverthattheyalldidunderstandHimtosaythatHe wouldgiveHimself,notsymbolicallyorfigurativelybuttruly andliterallytobetheirreal food.

NOTWELLRECEIVED.

Christ, atthistime, didnot explainhowHewouldfulfill HispromiseoftheBlessedEucharist.Hewantedthemtohave faithinHiswordsbyaccepting onHisauthoritythemeaning Hegavetothem.

Ishallnowcontinuetoread St.John'sGospel.Weshall seetheeffectwhichChrist's wordshadonHisowndisciples. Thenwecanjudgeforourselvesifthesedisciples,mendear totheHeartofChrist,understoodHimtospeakfiguratively asProtestantswouldhaveit,or literally,intheCatholicsense.

Beginningatverse61,we read:"ManythereforeofHis disciples,hearingit,said:This sayingishard,andwhocan hearit?ButJesus,knowing inHimself,thatHisdisciples murmuredatthis,saidtothem: Doththisscandaliseyou?If, then,youshallseetheSonof ManascendupwhereHewas before?Itisthespiritthat quickeneth:thefleshprofiteth nothing.ThewordsthatIhave spokentc,you,arespiritand life.Buttherearesomeofyou thatbelievenot. Afterthis manyofHisdiscipleswentback andwalkednomorewithhim."

"ManyofHisdiscipleswent backandwalkednomorewith Him."ThesewordsofSt.John tellusalltooclearlythatthe disciplesdidtakeHiswordsliterally.Hehadnotsuppressed themysteryforthem.Heonly askedforfaithinHim,andin Hiswordswhich"arespiritand life."HeevenforetoldHis gloriousascensionintoHeaven tomakeclearthatitwasnot deadFleshthatwastobetheir food."Ifthenyoushallsee theSonofManascendupwhere Hewasbefore?"Hedoesnot finishHisquestion.Letushope thatifHehadfinishedit,it wouldendlikethis:"Then,indeed,whenyouseeMegoing backtoMyFather,then,will youbelievetheselife-giving wordsthatIhave:,pokento you."

HARDSAYING.

Heevenreasonswiththem: "Thefleshprofitethnothing." Deadflesh,orfleshapartfrom thevivifyingspiritthatisnot theuselessthingIampromising."Itisthespiritthat quickeneth,"itisMyspiritthat willgiveyoulifeeverlasting."

Buttheywouldnotbelieve: theywerescandalised:His wordswerehard,dreadful words,whichnoonecouldbelieve:sotheywalkednomore withHim.

Letusnowseetheeffectthat Christ'swordshadonthediscipleswhoremainedfaithful.

Beginningfromverse68,we read:"ThenJesussaidtothe twelve:Willyoualsogoaway?

RegulationsoftheHolyOffice

VATICANCITY,Feb.28.-Bishopsmaygivepermission toCatholicstomeetlocallywithnon-Catholicsforthepurposeofdiscussingreligious"reunion,"underanewinstructionpublishedto-daybytheHolySee.

Thenewdocument,issuedbytheSacredCongregation oftheHolyOffice,accordingtoanofficialstatement,"explains,developsandcompletes"the"Monitum"ofJune5, 1948,whichforbadeCatholicstotakepartinpublicdiscussionsofreligiousquestionswithoutpermissionoftheHoly See.

Thenewconcessionisinterpretedbyauthoritieshereas evidenceofasinceredesireon thepartoftheChurchtohelp thosewhoareearnestlyandseriouslyseekingthetrueChurch foundedbyChrist.

Itisauthoritativelynotedat theVaticanthattherehasbeen agrowinginterestinrecent yearsintheteachingsofthe Churchonthepartofnon-Catholicsandthattherehavebeen anincreasingnumberofmeetingsworkingforthereunionof Christianity.
