ThereareseveralprovincesinFrance,suchastheVendee, Anjou,andsomepartsofBrittany,whereagreatmajority ofchildrenattendreligiousschoolsconductedwithoutaid frompublicfunds.Ontheotherhand,thereisalsoineach ofthevillagesapublicschool,attendedsometimesbyonly twoorthreepupils,andsupportedbytheGovernment.

Acharacteristicincidentoccurredrecentlyinthecountyof Montfaucon-sur-Loirewhich broughtabouttheresignationof elevenmayorsandtheirmunicipalcouncillors.

ThepublicschoolinthevillageofLongeronhasbeen maintainedforthreeyearsfor onesinglepupilwhosefamily livesonafarmatsomedistancefromthevillage.Itcosts thegovernment400,000Francs ayeartomaintainthisschool andthecommunityhastocarry asizeablepartofthisexpense. Inordertoeasethefinancial burdenofthecommunityw:thoutdisrespectforthereligiousbeliefsofthefamilyinvolved,themayor,Mr.Mulliez, offeredtobuyforthechilda bicycleoutofcommunityfunds, whichwouldenablethepupil toattendthepublicschoolina neighboringvillage,nofarther awayfromthefarmthanthe villageofLongeron.

Thechild'sparents,onthe adviceofadvocatesoftheseparateschoolsystem,refused thisoffer.Themayorthenofferedtoprovidethechildwith freeautomobiletransportation everydaytoandfromschool. Thefamilyagainturneddown thisoffer.

InthisconnectionitisrecalledthatCol.AbdullahTel, formerleaderofJordanforces inJerusalem,wasrecentlyre- portedtohavebrokenwiththe Kingovertheinternationalizationandotherissues.HeescapedtoEgyptwhereheregards himselfasa"politicalrefugee."Jordanauthoritieshavesince saidthattheColonel'sonly reasonforbreakingwiththe Kingwashisdispleasureatnot receivingapromotion-anallegationcalled"ridiculous"by theColonel.

Recentlyanothernewkindergartenandinfants'schoolwas openedatWollongong,inthe Southerncoalfields,andthe parishpriest,theRev.JohnJ. Mulheren,bitterlyattackedthe JointCoalBoard'spolicy.

Insteadofthis,dowenotseethatthisway -theonlylegitimateone-ofjudgingmenandthings accordingtoclearrulesandjustprinciplesisrepudiatedasshacklingspontaneity,whiletheimpulsesandreactionsofthesenses,ofinstinctandpassion,arehonouredastheonly"valueoflife?"Owingtothisway ofthinking,littleremainsofhumanreasonanditsforce ofpenetrationintothedeeplabyrinthofreality.Wise mennolongercount.Onlythoseremainwhosevision doesnotgobeyondtheirnarrowspecialisation,nor abovepurelytechnicalpower.Fromthesemenwe cannot,asarule,expecttheformationofpublicopinion, norsteadfastnessinthefaceofastutepropaganda, whicharrogatestoitselftheprivilegeofshapingpublic opiniontoitswrim.Inthisfield,menofsimple,uprightandclearChristianspirit,althoughmostlynot verylearned,aretheirsuperiorsbyfar.-FromhismessagetotheCatholicPressConventioninRomelast month.

Doctorswhoregardtheir professionsimplyandsolelyasa meansofmakingmoneywould inevitablydevelopacallous insensitivitytowardsthesufferingsoftheirpatients.Theyshouldalwaysendeavourtosee theirpatientsinthelightof theirChristianFaithandkeep inmindthattheyhadimmortal souls.Theireffortstohelpand healmightbemarvellouslyef- fectiveinfittingsoulsforeverlastinglife.Thesolicitudeand gentlenessoftheirattitude towardstheirpatientswould haveadistinctbearinginall theirwork.

PARENTALDELINQUENCY

Proofthatmodernparentsare toooftennegligentiseasilydeducedfromourhighstatistics onjuveniledelinquency.Enough hasbeensaidandwrittenabout thatsubject,h6wever,totellthe publicthatparentaldelinquency causesjuveniledelinquency.In thepresentarticleIproposeonly toaddthetestimonyofone teacherandobservertothesum.

oldPopewaschosentogovern theChurcharetoostupidto botherabout.Butitisamatter forgraveregretthatmanyof thechargesmadeagainstthe Churcharenotfables.Scandals beganintheKingdomofChrist withthebetrayalbyJudas,the denialbyPeter,theambitionof thesonsofZebedee:norneed webesurprisedthat,aslongas menarefree,thewordsof Christwillbefulfilled:"itmust heedsbethatscandalscome."As CardinalNewmansays"There havebeenbadpriests,badbishops,badnuns,badPopes"... -ForawhilethePapalchair wasfilledbymenwhogave themselvesuptoluxury,securityandaPagankindofChristianity,andweallknowwhata moralearthquakewastheconsequenceandhowtheChurch lost,andhaslosttothisday,one halfofEurope."(Pres.Position p.129:Diff,ofAnglicans,II., 254.)

Allthisisdeplorable.But whatfollows?Christwarnsus thatwemustdistinguishtheimmorallivesofpastorsfrom them,teachingauthority."Upon thechairofMoseshavesatthe ScribesandPhaees.Allthings thereforewhatsoevertheyshall saytoyou,observeanddobut accordingtotheirworksdoye not."(Mt.23:2,3).Thelistof chargeswhichyoubringfor- wardservestoprovethesad factofhistoryandmoralsthat meninhighplaces,ecclesiasticalaswellascivil,mayfall intogravesinsandoffertothose wholookuptothemthescandal ofwickedlives.Butbesidesthe historicalandmoraldepravity whichwedeplore,thereisan aspectofinteresttopsycholo- gists.Itisthequeertwistof mindbywhichsomepeoplelike towallowinwhattheAnglican paperIcitedcallsthe"cesspool."Theyseemtoignore,they donotwanttoknow,that,the timewhensomemeninhigh placeintheChurchwereworldlymen,wasaperiodofintense charitableeffort;thatmen whomnotevennarrowbigotscanfailtorecogniseasmenof highsanctity,glorifiedGodand gaveexampletomenbythe splendouroftheirvirtuesand theirworks:thatifGodpuni-shedtheChurchforthesinsof someofherrulers,Healsogave herthegracetobequickened andrevivified.Isuggesttoyou that,asanantidotetopoison, youmightreadsomeofthe greatbiographies,thelivesof menlikeSt.FrancisXavier,St. FrancisdeSales,St.Teresa,St. PeterCanisius,St.Vincentde PaulSt.RobertBellarmine. ThereisanopinioninAmericathattheSovietUnionmight decidetolaunchanattackon therestoftheworldin1952or 1953.TheBritishopinionpredictsitayearortwolater. I thinkanybodywhoignoresthe warningthattheSovietattack maybeonlytwoorthreeyears awaydoessoathisownperil. Myownopinion,sofarasIcan judgeoneconomicgrounds alone.isthattheSovietwillrequireaslightlylongerperiodto prepare.

Theeconomicsituation,althoughimportant,isonlyone factorandyoumustnottakemy opiniononthatscore.Sofar Ihaveonlyputbeforeyouwhat hasbeentoldtomebyothers whoareinahigherposition thanmyselfandbetterableto judge.

Thenextquestioniswhat methodofattackcanbeormay beused. IthinkitseemsfairlyclearthataSovietattack wouldmakeuseofbothatomic weaponsandtraditionalweapons.Thereareextremeschools ofthoughtoneitherside.There arethosewhosaythatatomic bombshavemadealloldermethodsofwarquiteobsolete,then thereareotherswhosaythat atomicbombswillneverbe used. Ithinkbothpointsof viewaremistaken,andIthink Sovietpreparationsareprobablybasedonusingbothtypes.

Theeconomicfactorcertainly comesin.Youcannotprepare forawar-takingonthebetter partoftheworld-withoutvery plentifulmaterialreserves.It ismyjob,asfarasIcan.to gaugethemandgiveyousome ideawhattheSovietUnioncan exploit. Icannotputbefore yousomevastmassesoffigures andleaveyoutodrawconclusions. Imustjustgiveyouthe mainconclusions, SOVIET'SWEAKNESS.

ThegreatesteconomicweaknessoftheSovietUnionis shortageoffood.Thatmay soundabitoddbecausealotof peoplehavetheideathatthe SovietUnioncommandsenormousareasoffertileagricultural land.Thisideacomesfrom readingoutofdategeography books.Thetroubleisthatthe geographybooksarecopied fromeachother,generation aftergeneration,andtheinformationgetsmoreandmoreout ofdate.Russiahasnothad anyamountoffoodforexport since1914.Itistruethatthere isanareaofveryfertileland inSouthernRussia,butinrelationtotheincreaseinpopulationinRussia.itisinadequate. AgreatdealofRussiaissubjecttoveryseriousdroughts. TheEuropeanfarmerexpectsto getfoodharvestseveryyear andheisintroubleifhedoes not.Russiaistryingtosupportapopulationverylargein relationtoheragriculturalresources.Russia,nowthatshe isadenselypopulatedcountry, issubjecttofamines.There wasabigfaminein1921and onein1946.Ifyoutrytoread themindofaRussianmilitary leader,nodoubtthatwillbeone ofhischiefproblems. Regardingindustrialrequiremtntsofallkinds,theywon't havemuchtoworryabout.Not thatRussiaisaveryproductive country.Russia'sdevelopment hasbeensubjecttoagreatdeal ofballyhoo.Theirindustrial progresshasbeennothinglike whattheymakeitouttobe.In bothofthetwofive-yearplans thesupposedfulfilmentwasonly inroublevalue.Ifyouanalyse theplansaccordingtotheactualquantitiesofgoodsproducedtheyweremilesfromfulfillingthem.

EVERYONEGOESHUNGRY.

IndustrialprogressinRussia, ascomparedwithothercountries,hasbeenlimitedandhas beenlargelyoffsetbyaserious deteriorationofagriculture.By 1941,whenRussiawasinvolvedinwar,theywerealongway offhavingrecoveredthelive stocknumbersof1929.Russia isacountrywherepractically everyonegoeshungry.The

standardoflivingoftheRussianpeopleisbeingforceddown withever-increasingseverity.

Youmightfindthisfacthard toaccept,butIcanputittoyou, supportedbyevidence,thatat notimesincetheSovietRevolution(1917)havetheRussian peopleenjoyedastandardoflivingevenequaltotheverymodeststandardtheyenjoyedin 1913.Thewholeincreasein industrialproductionhasbeen reservedforcapitalandmilitary purposes.Russianagricultural productionhasbeensubjecttoa seriousdeterioration.TheRussians,ofcourse,donotwantus tobelievethattheirregimehas beenaneconomicfailureinrespectofraisingthestandardof livingofthepeople.Butthere isadeeperconsiderationintheir propaganda,namely,thatthey donotwanttheWesternworld torealisehowthelivelihoodof theRussianworkerisbeingdepressed.

Ifweunderstoodthatwe shouldthenbegintodrawthe conclusionastohowtheSoviet, bysqueezingthelastdropof bloodoutofitspeopleinorder tomakereadyforwar,can greatlyincreaseitsmilitary potential.

SOVIETMACHINE.

Themethodsbywhichthe standardoflivingoftheRussian peoplearesqueezeddownare manyandvarious.Thepeople becomesubjecttogreaterre-strictions.Whenyouturnback totheSovietlifeinthefirstdecade,inthe20's,thelifethe peopleledwasenjoyablecomparedwithwhattheyhadto putupwithsubsequently.The Sovietmachineextortsthelast ounceofworkoutofwomen andchildren.Onepieceof propagandawhichWesternpeopleaccept,arestoriesabouthow awomanisallowedsixweeks' holidayatthetimeofmotherIhood,andwhatawonderfulsocialadvancethatit.Thisdivertsourattentionfromfacts, whicharethatwomenareexpectedtogoonandworkto

withinaweekortwoofchildbirth,andagainaweekortwo afterwards.Theseinhuman labourconditionsarenowbeing appliedinallcountriesunder Communistcontrol.

Itlookstomeasiftheywill wantto.about1955tohavethe equipmenttofightafullscale war.Theydo,ofcourse,concealverycarefullytheactual amounttheyarespendingon militarypreparations,butthe wayinwhichthingsaregoing, itlooksasiftheactualamount ofindustrialgoodsbeingproducedformilitarypurposesis nowcomparablewiththatbeing producedintheU.S.A.Itis, asIseeit,completedisregard oftheeconomicconditionsof thepeople,exploitationoftheir labourandsqueezingdownof theirconsumptionwhichforms themainstrengthoftheSoviet preparations.

Ishouldadd,ofcourse,inthe populationaspect,thenumberof youngmengrowinguptomilitaryage.inRussianowsurpassesthatoftheU.S.A.,and Britainandthedominionscombined.Inordertobalancethe militaryman-poweroftheSovietitwouldbenecessaryto bringinSouthernEuropeor LatinAmerica.

FOOD.

FoodisRussia'sgreatestconcern,andwhenitcomestoexploitingtheiroccupiedterritories,sofarasEasternGermany isconcerned,itlooksasthough itwillbeexploitedprimarilyfor agriculture.Aninterestingstory whichIheardrecentlyinAmericawasthatinpartsofEasternGermanyactualSovietcoloniesarebeingplanted.The samepracticeseemstobegoing on,muchmorerapidlyinwhat wasoncetheBalticRepublics. TheyhavebeenalmostcompletelycolonisedbyRussiansettlers,whiletheoriginalinhabitantsarebeingdispersedfor StatelabourinLabourCamps. Russiawillodoherutmosttoget additionalfoodsuppliesfrom anyoftheseoccupiedterritories.

Shewillalsobuildupherown industriesasrapidlyaspossible andwillprobablybuildupsome industriesintheBalkans.The otherthingshewilltakefrom Germanyisscientificknowledge.

Thatbringsmebacktomy remarksastowhatmethods Russiaislikelytoemployin warfare.Shemay.asIsay, build,upastrikingforcewhich couldtakeonthewholeworld, butitwilltakeheranumberof years.TheAmericans.Ithink, knowsomethingaboutthe

nowandIthinkweshouldb preparedforadeclineinthe CommunistParty,sothatinanotheryearorsowemaybecongratulatingourselvesonthedeclineofCommunistinfluence. AllthiswillhavebeenarrangedfromMoscowforourentertainment.

TheobjectoftheCommunist Partyhasbeentoobtainrecruits,manyofthemcriminals subjecttoblackmailbyparty organisers.Thisisthetypeof manwhocanorusedtoplant atomicbombsortobeinany

TheRussiansintendtouse theiratomicbombsinadifferentway.Theyarepreparing aPearlHarbouronaworld scalebecausethedangerofthe atomicbombisthatitcanbe detonatedbyremotecontrolby radioorbyadelayedaction timefuse.

Thiswaswellsetoutina publicstatementafewweeks agobyoneofPresidentTruman'schiefadvisers,Dr.V. "TheGuineaPig,"theRepertory'sopeninggambitfor1950, isaplaytowhichtheadjective "different"mightbeapplied withsomejustification.Onthis scorealoneitdeservesattention, forsomanyplaysarecastina familiarmouldthatthecasual observermightbeexcusedfor sometimesthinkingthatthetheatrehasfallenintothesereand yellowleaf.Fortunately,the situationisnotasbadasthat; forjustasweappeartobein thedoldrums,asoftenasnota brightmeteorwillflashacross thesky,andweknowagainthe windisblowing.

"TheGuineaPig"isnometeor, butithasaboutitthefreshness ofnovelty.Itdealswithlife underthepublicschoolsystem inEngland.

Whetherornotthepictureis inaccordancewiththefactsis anissuethatneedn'tworryus. Theplayiswellenoughactedto makeitconvincing.Itwaswell received.

Withregardtoconstruction, therewereoneortwoweaknesses.Theidentityofthevillainwaspalpablyevidentand atthesametimeunreal.Some curtainclimaxeswereforced. Tobefrank,theplayrathertoo muchfollowedtheconventions ofschoolfiction.

NobleNorwooddidapieceof goodcharacterwork.Hewas mostconsistent.

EricHodgkinson,makingone ofhisrareappearancesonthe stage,wassuitablyatease.He gavearestfulperformance.In contrast,BruceMcCreerywas edgy.

EthelBartlett-DayandJenny Extonwentwellasmotherand daughter.Theotherladyin thecast,AilsaAinsworth,made Mrs.Readseemtoomuchofan imbecile.

Someexcellentjuvenilework wasdonebyPeterHiggs,Bruce Chipper,andKerryManolas.

Asharpandpleasingportrait wasetchedbyBillMinors.

Productionwasinthehands ofJeanRule.Manydetails werehandedexpertly,but pointlessandfrequentmovementhadanunsettlingeffect. -DEGUSTIBUS

Thecurrentproductionatthe RepertoryTheatreisWarren Chetham-Strodes'playabout theEnglishpublicschoolsystem,"TheGuineaPig."

Theplayis,Ifeel,onlya mediocreone.This,too,could besaidoftheRepertory'spresentation,onlymediocre.

ThestoryoftheplayconcernsitselfwithatypicalCockneyschoolboy,Readbyname (BruceChipper),fromaworkingclassfamily,whoisawardedascholarshiptooneofthe EnglishgreaterPublicSchools. Needlesstosay,hismanner,etc.,

islookeddownupbnbyhis classfellowsandmasters.One ofthemasters,NigelLorraine (BruceMcCreery),however, takestheboyunderhisprotectingcare,andmakeshim''a noblerepresentative"ofthe school.Lorraineisappointed housemasterinplaceofHartley (NobleNorwood),whoretires duetoillhealth.LorrainemarriesHartley'sdaughter,Lynn (JennyExton).Readgetsa scholarshiptotheUniversity, and"everybodyliveshappyever after."

Nowforthecast.Orchids gotoBruceChipperastheboy, Read.Thepartwaswelldone, thoughitdidlosecolourdueto thelackoftheCockneyaccent. Hismanneronthestagewas freeandeasyandincharacter allthewaythroughout.

Grimmett,asmallpart,playeyverywellbyPeterHiggs, alsodeservesasmall"posy."His actingasoneofthe"upperclass types"reallydidringtrue,and heprovidedagoodexampleof thetypeofcharacterhewas portraying.TheHousemaster,

LloydHartley,asplayedby NobleNorwood,smackedtoo muchoftheRobertMorleyfor myliking.Hedeclaimedhis lineswiththeattitudeofabig industrialistratherthanwith thatofahousemaster.Bruce McCreerywasadequateasNigel Lorraine,buthisvoiceneeds morelightandshadeoftoneto saveitfrombecomingmonotonous.

JennyExton,asLynnHartley,thehousemaster'sdaughter, wasfartoowooden.Thelove scenebetweenherandLorraine wasthemostcoldandlifeless thatIhaveeverseen.Alittle morelife,pleaseMissExton!

Mrs.Read,playedbyAilsa Ainsworth,wastooyoungin appearanceandactionforher presumedage.Mr.Read,however,wasverywelldonebyBill Minors,who,Ibelieve,isacomparativenewcomer. Ethel Bartlett-Daywasadequate(if nothingmore)asMrs.Hartley. Alsoin kinson,thecastwereEricHodgastheHeadmaster (whoseactingwasmarredbya veryAustralianaccent),and KerryManolas.

Thesettingsinthemainwere poor.Thesightoffourtelephonesintheoneroomsmackedagainofthe"RobertMorley-EdwardMySon"touch.

Groupingsandmovementsin themainlackedcolour,compositionandpurpose.Thepro-duction(whenevident)wasby JeanRule. -DOGBERRY.

ST.PATRICK'SCONCERT.

untilmorning,wewouldstillbe here."Hepossessesagrand personality,agood"brogue,"and apleasingvoice-allthreeare necessaryforagoodrendition ofIrishsongs.

AnIrishFantasyinBalletand Mimewasanotherhighlightin thestar-studdedconcert.The presentationofthe"FairyTales ofIreland"inthisnovelform lackednothinginthoroughness andimaginativepreparation, andthefrockingwasmosteffective.

MissBarbaraCorbettdisplayedgreattalentintwoviolin solos-"TheLondonderryAir" and"Meditation."Theyoung artist'sfirmroundednotesand virtuositygiveevidenceofher exceptionaltalent..

Nextweweretreatedtoa CelticCameopresentedbySt. St.Joseph'sSchool,Victoria Square.Themusicalandvocal renderingof"PadraictheFiddler"and"TheMoonHath RaisedHerLamp,"wasreceivedwithloudapplause.

TheaudiencewasthenpriviligedtoseeinactiontheOpen IrishNationalStep-Dancing ChampionofW.A.:`TheBlackbird"and"IrishReel"carried thehallmarkofdancinggenius.

Theprogrammeconcluded withanIrishHouseParty.The informalgatheringoffriends andneighbourstomarkthedepartureoftwoAustralianvisitors-Irishexiles-providedan unforgettabledenouementtoa wonderfulconcertandtheoccasionofpresentingsomeIrish numbersincharacteristicIrish fashion.

I'msureitisthefirsttimea songinIrishwasheardataSt. Patrick'sNightConcert.Mr. McCarran,whoisafluentGaelicspeaker,sangabracketof Irishnumberswhichwereappreciatedbyall,ifonlyunderstoodbyafew.Duringthe partysixofthe"ladsandlassies"dancedtheFairyReel, whichbroughtpealsoflaughter fromtheaudience.Thefast movementamongsttheboys wasn'tquiteperfect,sothe girlshadtodirectoperations-hencethehilarity.

Lookingbackoverwhatwe havewritten,wefeelthatwe havenotdonejusticetothe schoolsorsoloistswhocontributedtheitems.Wehavenot takenuptheattitudeofthe criticwhoseestheshortcomingsandisblindtothevirtues -wehavesimplyfollowedthe programme,itembyitem,and triedtogiveyouanunadorned simpleappreciationofthe greatestSt.Patrick'sNightConcertinyears.-R.

Itisclaimedthatthisyear's concertwasthebestinyears, Judgingbyreports,weareof opinionthatthisclaimisjusti- fiable-thehappyexpressionson thefacesofthosewhoattended wouldseemtoconfirmtheclaim. Theentertainmentvalueofany showiseasilygaugedfromthe facialexpressionsoftheaudience.

Onceagaintheattendancewas excellent.Thetheatre,which accommodates1,500,wasalmost packedtocapacity.Weappealedfora"fullhouse;"we gotit,andwearemostgrateful.

Theconcertwasintroduced bytheVictoriaSquareLadies' CollegeOrchestra.Underthe batonofMissMarjorieWynd- ham,alilting,vivacious,rythmicrenderingofevergreenIrish melodiesformedtheidealsettingforanIrishConcert.

Asthecurtainwentupachoir ofabout70boysfromC.B.C., Highgate,underthedirectionof Rev.BrotherO'Brien,wasat theready.Thencamethemost sensational,themostspectacular,andthemostinspiringitem oftheevening-thehoistingof theIrishflag.Aflurryofdrums signalled"thegreatascent,"and astheflag,flutteringinthe breeze,reachedthetopofthe flag-pole,thetrumpetersoundedthereveille.Thetricolour, wavingitsgreetingstothelarge audience,willbevividlyrememberedwhenallotherconcertmemorieswillhavefaded.

Immediatelytheboys'choirburstintosong."Hail,Glorious St.Patrick"-thatancienthymn thatwillnevergrowold-saw St.Patrickinhisepiscopalrobes gracethestage.Whenthe choirbegantosing"ALittleBit ofHeaven,"St.Patrickmade wayforthemapofIreland,attendedbytheangelswhogave ititsgeographicalsituation. "TheDearLittleShamrock"-an overgrownleafgaveitmeaning -wasthenextnumber,andas afittingfinaletothischoral scenawewereremindedofthe effectofsmilingIrisheyes,in radiatingjoyinHeavenandon earth. ThenfollowedaCeiliDance, bypupilsoftheIrishDancingTeachers'Association.Thetiming,rhythm,andexecutiondisplayedinthisdancewereindicativeofthoroughprepara- tion.
