LONDON,"Feb.6(Radio).-BecauseoftheGovernment'spre-electionbanonpoliticalparades,aplanned"silentmarch"ofCatholicmenthroughLondontoTrafalgar Squarewascancelled.CancellationtookplaceafterArchbishopJosephMasterson,ofBirmingham,andBishop GeorgeA.Beck.A.A.,CoadjutorofBrentwood,hadconferredatScotlandYardwiththeDeputyCommissionerof Police. The"silentmarch"hadbeenplannedasaspiritualexerciseandalsoasademonstrationofCatholicconcernover thepresentstatusofCatholicschools.LondonpoliceconsideredthemarchwithinthescopeoftheGovernmentban onpoliticalparades.

AnaccountofthepersecutionoftheChurchinthat countrypointsoutthatfresheffortsareconstantlybeing madetokeepallCatholicteachingoutoftheschools,while replacingitwithCommunisticpropaganda,andtosuppress Catholicpublicationsofallsorts. LatestnewsreachinghereemphasisesthatCommunismwith itsanti-God,materialisticideology,isthereligionbeingthrust uponchildrenintheschools. Since1945governmentofficials haveshownagreathatredfor Catholicschools,andrecently allsuchschoolshavebeensuppressedinthecountry.Orphanages,convents,andnearly alldiocesanseminarieshave beentakenfromtheChurch. Prayerbooks.catechisms,and otherCatholicliteraturearealmostnon-existent.Theprintingofonlyoneprayerbookis permitted.Mostpeoplehave noprayerbookatall,although theyshowarealdesirefor them.

Ingeneraltheconditionofthe ChurchinYugoslaviaisgrowing worsebytheday;noevidence haveappearedthatitwillimproveinthefuture.ThepurposeoftheCommunistsseems tobetodestroytheCatholic ChurchinYugoslaviagradually.Theyareconcentratingon firstwipingouttheChurchcompletelyinthosesectionswhere theCatholicpopulationisthe smallest.

"CatholicsinSlovakiaare systematicallypersecuted,both publiclyandsecretly,"thedocumentcharges."Themostferociousattacksaremadeagainst theChurchandherrepresentatives,withoutanypossibilityof defence.Parentsarepersecutedbecausetheysendthirchildrentolearncatechism.The live'ihoodandexistenceofthose whogotoreligiousservicesis threatened."

Priestswhorefusetocarry outtheordersanddecreesof theGovernmentin"purelyreligiousmatters"arepunished bythe"mostviolentmeasures,' theSlovakLiberationCommitteestates.-Priests,monks, nunsareforciblyloadedinto boxcarsandtrucksandcarried awaytounknowndestinations.

LONDON,Feb.2.-The Rev.JulesDetry,six-foot almonerofthefamousGreatSt. BernardHospiceinSwitzerland, hasgiventhefirstshowingof thefilmofa2,000-milejourney hemadethroughTibetbefore theRoyalGeographicalSociety here. TheCanon'-heisanexpert boxer,skier,tennisplayer,cyclistandrifleshot-isadeptatjujitsu,holdsapilot'slicenceand wenttotheFarEastin1946to learnChineseandTibetan.

InOctoberthatyearhebegan hisperiloustrekthroughthe mountainousTibetcountryforbiddentoforeigners.Hisequipment,consistedofhismovie-cameraandapairoffield-glasses.

Thepurposeofhisjourney, FatherDetryexplainedtoan audienceof1,000,wastohelp forwardtheworkoftheSt. BernardFathers,who,since 1934,havemaintainedatiny hospiceintheTibetanmountains,aroundwhichasmall Christiancolonyhasgrown.

WhenFatherDetrybeganhis journey,thepriestinchargeof thismission,FatherTornay,had beendrivenaway.(Later,in August1949,hewasmurdered onhiswaytoLhasa).

ThroughanAmerican'seyes, itwasatrialofparadoxes. TherewasVilmosOlti,before andduringthewaroneof Hungary'sforemostnazis,now playingcommunistchiefjudge.

Oltifiredanendlessstreamof questionsatthedefendants,methodicallybuildingupthecase againstthemwith'Yes'and 'No'answers.Heallowedseven prosecutionwitnesses,nodefencewitnesses.Ashecarried thecasethroughinalightning threedays,thehard-facedprosecutor-jurorseldomlookedup fromthepapersheread.

Thetrialseemedalittleacademic.Thedefendantshadconf_ essedeverythingdaysbeforeat theheadquartersofthedread secretpolice,60Andrassystreet. Andthegovernmenthadthe confessionsboundneatlyintoa yellowbookfortheconvenienceofRedpropagandists.

Mr.Douglasis,accordingto hislights,assincereinthisnew booksashewasin"TheRobe," butheportraysanevenmore insipidbrandofChristianity. Thephilosophyheteachesisof acheerful,let's-all-be-goodand-happyvintage.Headheres,moreorlessandwhenit suitshim,totheGospelStory, andhepaintsinaprettyconvincinghistoricalbackground. TobrightenthingsupheintroducesalovestoryofanArabianprincesswhichtakesupfar toomanyoftheearlierpages, anddependsformuchofitsinterestonthetopicalityofthe Jew-Arabconflict.

Mr.DouglasisnotaCatholic, butis,Iunderstand,aChristian;yethisconceptofChristianityseemstobeveryfarremovedfromours.His"Big Fisherman"isnottheSimon PeteroftheNewTestament.He presentsusinsteadwithakind ofglorifiedlatter-dayrevivalist, aback-slappinglay-bishopfrom theAmericanbible-belt.His Christisawishy-washycharacter,awonder-workerofsorts (orisHemerelyafaith-healer?),somethingofaphysical weakling,aperfectman.

Moreover,Catholicsmaybe surprisedtodiscoverthat,accordingtoMr.Douglas,Jesus didnotsaytoSimon,"Thouart Peter,anduponthisrockIwill buildmyChurch."Thisbook givesthewordsusedas"Itis uponyourfaiththatIshall buildmyKingdom."

NorarethesetheonlydeviationsfromtheGospel.Onpage 100Simonisportrayedasknowingnothingofthemarriage feastatCana,althoughhewas actuallypresentthere(seeJohn c.,v.ii.).Onpage264weare toldthatPeter'smother-in-law, "Hannah,"sleptafterbeingcured,yetMark(c.1,v.31)and Matthew(c8,v.15)recordthat "thefeverleftheratonceand shebegantowaitonthem."

MADRID,Feb.16(NC).-A schoolofmedicineformissionarieshasbeensetuphereby theSuperiorCouncilofMissions.Theschoolwillgivea two-yearcoursetomissionaries andlayhelpers,providingbasic medicalandsurgicaltraining. Twenty-ninestudents,among themnunsandpriests,haveregisteredforthecourse.

InNagasakilastmonth,Catholicscommemoratedthe feastoftwenty-sixmartyrswhowereputtodeathinJapan inFebruary,1597.Themartyrsincludedsevenpriestsand eighteenmen:thetwenty-sixthmartyrwasThomasKosaki Hikotoro.

WhenthedreadhandofpersecutionfellonNagasaki,there wereveryfewJapaneseChristiansthere-notevenasmany asnow.TheEmperorandhis lordshaddeterminedtowipe themoutaltogether,andsent soldierstoarrestthepriestsand leadinglaymen.Thomaswas withoneofthepriests.He couldeasilyhaveescaped,we aretold.buthechosetostay. Withtheothershewasflung intoNishinomiyagaol,andcondemnedtodeathforthedreadfulcrimeofbeingafaithfulCatholic. Whilewaitingtobeputto death,hewrotetohismothera letter,whichisstillpreserved attheVatican;itisstainedwith tears.Hereisatranslationof it:-

RequiemMassfortherepose ofthesoulofthelateMr.PellegriniwascelebratedinSt. Mary'sCathedralonFriday morning.Hisexcellencythe ApostolicDelegate,theMost Rev.PaulMarella,S.T.C., J.C.D.,andHisLordshipthe MostRev.ErisO'Brien(AuxiliarytoHisEminencethe Cardinal)werepresentinthe sanctuary.Celebrantofthe MasswastheAdministratorof St.Mary's,theVeryRev.Dean Flanagan.

Morethan500peopleattended theMass.Mr.Pellegrini'sfamilyoccupiedthefrontseats. Themedalandribbonofthe OrderofSt.Gregoryrestedon theCoffin,andwashandedto Mrs.Pellegrinibeforetheburial atWaverleyCemetery.The Cortegeproceededthroughthe city,passingRomaHouse,Mr. Pellegrini'sbusinessheadquarters,beforemovingontothe cemetery.

TheLateMr.Pellegriniwas theonlysonofthelateMr.and Mrs.UmbertoPellegrini.His motherdiedmanyyearsago. Hisfatherwhowasanativeof Tuscany,Italy,andco-founder ofthefirmofPellegriniandCo. diedin1948;aged84years.

TheloveofChristandHim Crucifiedpermeatedthewhole lifeandcharacterofFrancis, andheplacedthechiefhopeof redemptionandredressfora sufferinghumanityintheliteral imitationofhisDivine,Master.

ratherthandoctrinal,itwasbecausehepreachedtomeetthe wantsofhisday,andthose whomheaddressedhadnot strayedfromdogmatictruth; theywerestill"hearers,"ifnot "doers,"oftheWord.

REFLECTDIVINEPERFECTION

ARTLESSSIMPLICITY. Hardlylessengagingthanhis boundlesssenseoffellow-feelingwasFrancis'downrightsincerityandartlesssimplicity. 'Dearlybeloved,"heoncebeganasermon,followingupona severeillness,"Ihavetoconfess toGodandyouthatduringthis LentIhaveeatencakesmade withlard."Andwhenthe guardianinsistedforthesakeof warmthuponFrancishavinga foxskinsewnunderhiswornouttunic,theSaintconsented onlyuponconditionthatanother skinofthesan.,sizebe sewnoutsk'e,foritwashis singularstudynevertohide

Thesaintimitatedtheexample ofChristasliterallyasitwas inhimtodoso;barefoot,and inabsolutepoverty,heproclaimedthereignoflove.This heroicimitationofChrist'spovertywasperhapsthedistinctive markofFrancis'vocation,and hewasundoubtedly,asBossuet expressesit,themostardent, enthusiastic,anddesperatelover ofpovertytheworldhasyet seen.AftermoneyFrancismost detesteddiscordanddivisions. Peace,therefore,becamehis watchword,andthepat..eticreconciliationheeffectedinhis laatdaysbetweentheBishop andPotestaofAssisiisbutone instanceoutofthemanyofhis powertoquellthestormsof passionandrestoretranquillity toheartstornasunderbycivil strife.Thedutyofaservant ofGod.Francisdeclared,was toliftuptheheartsofmenand ssaupei2IsnILudstuatiia/tow Henceitwasnot"frommonasticstallsorwiththecarefulirresponsibilityoftheenclosed student"thatthesaintandhis followersaddressedthepeople: "theydweltamongthem,and grappledwithsheevilsofthe systemunderwhichthepeople groaned."Theyworkedinreturnfortheirfare,doingforthe lowestthemostmeniallabour, andspeakingtothepoorest wordsofhopesuchastheworld hadnotheardformanyaday. InthiswiseFrancisbridgedthe chasmbetweenanaristocratic clergyandthecommonpeople, andthoughhetaughtnonew doctrine,hesofarrepopularisedtheoldonegivenonthe MountthattheGospeltookona r.-!wlifeandc.,lledforthanew love.

ForthisreasonFrancisset asideallquestionsmoretheoreticalthanpractical,andreturnedtheGospel.Again,tosee inFrancisonlythelovingfriend ofallGod'screatures,thejoyous singerofnature,istooverlook altogetherthataspectofhis workwhichistheexplanation ofalltherest-itsspiritualside. Fewliveshavebeenmorewhollyimbuedwiththesupernatural,asevenRenanadmits.Nowhere,perhaps,cantherebe foundakeenerinsightintothe innermostworldofspirit,yetso closelywerethesupernatural andthenaturalblendedin Francis,thathisveryasceticism wasoftenclothedintheguiseof romance.aswitnesseshiswooingtheLadyPoverty,inasense thatalmostceasedtobefigurative.ForFrancis'singularly vividimaginationwasimpregnatewiththeimageryofthe ChansonsdeGeste,andowing tohismarkedlydramatictendency,hedelightedinsuiting hisactiontohisthought.So, too,thesaint'snativeturnfor thepicturesqueledhimtounite religionandnature.Hefound inallcreatedthings,however trivial,somereflectionofthe Divineperfection,andheloved toadmireinthemthebeauty, power,wisdom,andgoodnessof theirCreator.Andsoitcame topassthathesawsermons eveninstones,andgoodin everything.

ableSacrament,thatinhishumilityheneverdaredtoaspire tothatdignity.Humilitywas, nodoubt,thesaint'srulingvirtue.Theidolofanenthusiasticpopulardevotion,heever trulybelievedhimselflessthan theleast.Equallyadmirable wasFrancis'promptanddocile obediencetothevoiceofgrace withinhim,evenintheearly daysofhisill-definedambition, whenthespiritofinterpretation failedhim.Lateron,the saint,withasclearasenseof hismessageasanyprophetever had,yieldedungrudgingsubmissiontowhatconstitutedecclesiasticalauthority. Noreformer,moreover,waseverless aggressivethanFrancis.His apostolateembodiedthevery noblestspiritofreform;he strovetocorrectabusesbyholdingupanideal.Hestretched outhisarmsinyearningtowardsthosewholongedforthe "bettergifts."Theothershe leftalone.

REKINDLEDLOVEOFGOD.

Andthus,withoutstrifeor schism,God'sPoorLittleMan ofAssisibecamethemeansof renewingtheyouthofthe Churchandofinitiatingthe mostpotentandpopularreligiousmovementsincethebeginningsofChristianity.Nodoubt thismovementhaditssocialas wellasitsreligiousside.That theThirdOrderofSt.Francis wentfartowardsre-Christianisingmedievalsocietyisamatterofhistory.However,Francis'foremostaimwasareligiousone.Torekindlethelove ofGodintheworldandreanimatethelifeofthespiritin theheartsofmen-suchwashis mission.ButbecauseSt.FrancissoughtfirsttheKingdomof GodandHisjustice,many otherthingswereaddedunto him.Andhisownexquisite Franciscanspirit,asitiscalled, passingoutintothewideworld, becameanabidingsourceofinspiration.Perhapsitsavours ofexaggerationtosay,ashas beensaid,that"allthethreads ofcivilisationinthesubsequent centuriesseemtoharkbackto Francis,"andthatsincehisday, "thecharacterofthewholeRomanChurch brian."Itwouldbedifficult, nonetheless,tooverestimate theeffectproducdbyFrancis uponthemindofhistime,or thequickeningpowerhewieldedonthegenerationswhich havesucceededhim.Withhis all-pervadinginfluence,Francis mustsurelybereckonedamong thosetowhomtheworldofart andlettersisdeeplyindebted.

HEARTSIMPLE.MINDNOT. Suchinbriefestoutlineare son'ofthesalientfeatures whichrenderthefigureofFrancisoneofitchsupremeattractionthatallmannerofmenfeel themselvesdrawntowardshim, withasenseofpersonalatachment.Few,however,ofthose whofeelthecharmofFrancis' personalitymayfollowthe saint.Jhislonelyheightofrapt co:.munionwithGod.For. howeverengaginga"minstrel oftheLord,"Franciswasnone thelessaprofoundmysticinthe truestsenseoftheword.The wholeworldwastohimone luminousladder,mountingupon therungsofwhichheapproachedandbeheldGod.Itisvery misleading,however,toportpay Francisasliving"ataheight wheredogmaceasestoexist," andstillfurtherfromthetruth torepresentthetrendofhis teachingasoneinwhichorthodoxywasmadesubservientto "humanitarianism."Avery cursoryinquiryintoFrancis'religiousbeliefsufficestoshow thatitembracedtheentireCatholicdogma,nothingmoreor less.If,then,thesaint'ssermonswereonthewholemoral

Francis'loveofcreatureswas notsimplytheoffspringofa softorsentimentaldisposition; itaroseratherfromthatdeep andabidingsenseofthepresenceofGod,whichunderlay allhesaidanddid.Evenso, Francis'habitualcheerfulness wasnotthatofacareless nature.orofoneuntouchedby sorrow.NonewitnessedFrancis'hiddenstruggles,hislong agoniesoftears,orhissecret wrestlingsinprayer.Andif wemeethimmakingdumbshowofmusic,byplayinga coupleofsticks,likeaviolin,to giveventtoh:sglee,wealso findhimheart-sorewithforebodingatthediredissensionsin theorder,whichthreatenedto makeshipwreckofhisi:Ical. Norweretemptationsorother weaken;igmaladiesofthesoul wantir-,`othesaintatanytime. Francis'lightsomenesshadits sourceinthatentiresurrender ofeverythingpresentandpassing,inwhichhehadfoundthe interiorliLartyofthechildren ofGod;itdrewitsstrengthfrom hisintimateunionwithJesusin theHolyCommunion.ThemysteryoftheHolyEucharist,being anextensionofthePassion,held apreponderantplaceinthelife ofFrancis.andhehadnothing moreatheartthanallthatconcernedthecultusoftheBlessedSacrament.Hencewenot onlyhearofFrancisconjuring theclergytoshowbefittingrespectforeverythingconnected withtheSacrificeoftheMass, butwealsoseehimsweeping outpoorchurches,questing sacredvesselsforthem,and providingthemwithaltarbreadsmadebyhimself.So great,indeed,wasFrancis'reverenceofthepriesthood,becauseofitsrelationtotheAdor-
