LYDENBURG,SouthAfrica, Feb.16(NC-Fides).-Thereisa plantobringallState-supportedmissionschoolsundersuch tightStatecontrolinSouthAfricathattheinfluenceofthe Churchintheformationof youthwillbecompletelyexcluded,accordingtomissionaries here.

Thefacthasbecomeclearin asurveymadebyaschoolcommission,setupbytheUnionof SouthAfricaGovernment,the missionariesstate.The+workof thiscommissionwastostudy nativeeducationandtogather viewandsuggestionsfromall organisationsconnectedwiththe trainingofNegroyouth,

QuestionsaskedCatholicorganisationsbythiscommission madeitapparentthatunlimited controlofeducationbythe Stateisbeingsought.The Statehasclaimedthatsuchcontrolisdesiredbyamajorityof theteachers.However,Bishop JohnRiegler,VicarApostolicof Lydenburg,ataStateeducationallonference,produceda memorandumsignedby1,154 teacherswhichexpressedapreferencefortheState-supported missionschoolsratherthanabsoluteStatecontrol.

VENICE.Italy,Feb.6(NC).-TheRumanianCommunistregimeisadvancingpreparationsforanearly-trial"of BishopAaronMarton,ofAlbaJulia,accordingtoinformationreachingherefromreliablesources.

These"popular"gatherings seempatternedonsimilarones frequentlyreportedinthe Communist-dominatedcountries ofHungary,Czechoslovakia,and Poland.

Meanwhile,theRumanianregimecontinuespressureonall prieststofallinlinewiththe Communistconceptof"freedom ofreligion."Reportsofarestscontinue.Amongthose recentlyplacedbehindbarsby theregimeistheFranciscan ConventualCommunityofMoldavia.ItincludestheRev. AnthonyBisoc,Provincial;the Revs.AnthonyLukaci,George Patrascu.AnthonyDamoc,Peter Dance,JohnBunaru,and GeorgeCongeanca,andthree theologystudents. PriestsandCatholiclaymen whorecentlycameherefrom Czechoslovakiaareunanimous intheiropinionthatatrialfor ArchbishopBeranislikely.

ReportsissuedbyCzechGovernmentradioandpress statingthat99.5percentofthe Czechpriestshaveswornunqualifiedallegiancetothe"people'sdemocraticregime"are steadfastlydeniedbyincoming refugees.Itisadmittedthata smallfractionofthepriestsmay havesworntheprescribedoath withoutattemptingtoaddany reservation,buttheoverwhelmingmajoritytooktheoathwith atleastthementalreservation, "insofarasthelawsofGodand naturallawsarenotviolated."

TheadventoftheFranciscanstotheArchdioceseisan eventofimportancetranscendingthepurelymaterialaspect thatthisisoneofthefewregionsoftheworldwherethey arenotalreadypresent;andthisfortheverygoodreason thatthesonsofthePoverelloholdauniquepositionamong theOrdersoftheChurch.Itwasnolesstruesevenhundredyearsagothanitisto-day,thatFranciscanspirituality isjustaboutthemostrevolutionaryideologythatitispossibletoimagine;besideitthelustyexhortationsoftheRed tofoundanewworldmightbeconsideredasthefervent pleaofareactionaryfortheperpetuationofthestatusquo. IndeedtofindarevolutionarywhosurpassesFrancesco Bernadoneinthefervourwithwhichheadvocatedauniversalupheaval,wemustlookmorethanathousandyears beforehim-tothefigureoftheMasterheserved.

ThatinfactwasjustwhatFrancisdid.HecontemplatedthefigureofChrist,brilliantlyportrayedinthefew boldstrokesoftheGospels.Thenhelookedaroundhimto seewhatprogresshadbeenmadetowardstheKingdomof Heaveninathousandyears;andwhathesawdidnot preciselyfillhisheartwithjoy.ForhesawaChristendom slowlysettlingintoaquiet,uneventfulformalism, almostindistinguishablefromdeath.HesawhowcarefulattentiontotheletterofthelaWcanenablethewellinstructedtoavoidentirelyitsspirit.Hesawhowcompletelythefaithfulofeveryrankandstation,butespecially therichandpowerful,canstillbepractisingChristians.althoughspirituallytheyhaveneverheardofBethlehemand Nazareth.AndheheardtheMaster'sVoicehidhim:"RebuildMyHouse."

Rebuildthathousehedid:notwithPress,Radio,and trumpet;notwithpageantryandsportingevents:notwith magnificentedificesfortheHousesofGod-andofmen. Insteadhedivorcedfromhisheartallloveofearthlycreatures,andsoughttheKingdomofGodinpoverty.prayer andpenance.Itwasnotanewprescription;neitherwas itaveryattractiveone;butitwasdefinitelypopularinthe truesenseoftheterm-forpeopleembraceditinsuchnumbersandwithsuchenthusiasmasledtothediscomfortand embarassmentofthepowersthatbe,andinmanycasesto theirundoing.Anyonecouldhavepointedoutthatthe massofGod'speoplearesolethargicandindifferentthat thepastorhasenoughtodotomakethemkeeptheNatural LawandtheTenCommandments;butFrancis to thatscepticalschoolofexperimentalscientistswhichinsuch mattersrejectsalltestimonynotbasedonexperiment.He triedtheexperiment,andtheearthquakewhichfollowed showedwhatjustonefaithfulfollowerofChristmayaccomplishbytheGraceofGod.

NowtheuniquenessoftheFranciscanmessageliesnot aloneinitspopularappealtofollowChrist,butalsointhe insistencewithwhichGodhasdeignedtoremindusofit. Forpreciselyinthismodernage,whenFrancishadbeen relegatedtotheranksofsimple-mindedandemasculate loversoflittlebirds,thesamemessageashadrockedthe UmbrianhillsfellfromthelipsofOurLadyatFatima.And inthathour,whenCommunismseemedbutaneccentricity ofsmallbandsofBohemians,Marygavetotheworld,as theoneanswertotheRedmenace,thatsimpleexhortation tofollowChristinthelessspectacularofhisdeeds.How farwehavetakenittoheartleteachanswerforhimself.

Itwouldbeoptimistictoexpectthatthecomingofthe Franciscanswillspellthedeath'ofCommunisminthiscountry.Itisnottoomuch,however,tosaythattherebirthoftheFranciscanspiritcanbanishitfromtheworld.

Aspartofthecommendable, ifnecessarilyinsufficient,effortswhichtheBritishLabour Partymakesfromtimetotime topersuadeContinentalSocialiststhattheyreallyneednot besohostiletotheChristianreligion,andthattheywouldfare muchbetterelectorallyifthey werenot,Mr.Attleehasgiven aninterviewtotheRhineland DeutscheTagespostonthepart playedbyChristianityinthe earlydaysoftheMovement;for, saidMr.Attlee:-

"Itisdangeroustoputabible inthehandsofanEnglishman; hefindsinitmaterialwhich induceshimt6becomeapreacherofsomereligious,socialor economicdoctrine.Thisisdemonstratedbythelargenumber ofreligioussectsinthiscountry, andbytheprincipleswhichthey represent."

Hewentontoremark(we arere-translatinghimback) that "anotherelementwhichplayed apartinthebuildingupofthe BritishLabourMovementona broaderbasiswasthefactthat somanyBritishCatholicscame fromIreland,wheretheCatholic

populationwasimbuedwiththe spiritofpoliticalandeconomic conflict.TheBritishLabour Movementowesmuchgratitude tothesemenandwomenwho broughtfromtheirowncountry thefightingspiritoftheoppressed."

ThirtyyearsaftertheIrish Treaty,itisstilltrueofthedescendantsofemigrantsfrom Irelandthattheyarecarried forwardbyamomentumfrom thepast,andthatitisagreat handicaptotheConservative Partythatitusedtobethe UnionistParty,blockingIrish nationalaspirations.andstill moreperhapsthatitthenrepresentedinEngland,asithad inIreland,theestablishedand privilegedorder.TheLabour Movementtodayistheinheritor ofaveryusefullegacy,and althoughtheLiberalPartywas thehistoricpartyofHome Rule,itneverderivedmuch benefitfromthis,partlybecause ofMr.LloydGeorge,butmore probablybecausetheLiberal Partywastoowellestablished inEnglishsocietytoreflector respondtotheIrishimmigrant mentality.

TheadventoftheFranciscanstotheArchdioceseisan eventofimportancetranscendingthepurelymaterialaspect thatthisisoneofthefewregionsoftheworldwherethey arenotalreadypresent;andthisfortheverygoodreason thatthesonsofthePoverelloholdauniquepositionamong theOrdersoftheChurch.Itwasnolesstruesevenhundredyearsagothanitisto-day,thatFranciscanspirituality isjustaboutthemostrevolutionaryideologythatitispos sibleto'imagine;besideitthelustyexhortationsoftheRed tofoundanewworldmightbeconsideredasthefervent pleaofareactionaryfortheperpetuationofthestatusquo. IndeedtofindarevolutionarywhosurpassesFrancesco Bernadoneinthefervourwithwhichheadvocatedauniversalupheaval,wemustlookmorethanathousandyears beforehim-tothefigureoftheMasterheserved.

ThatinfactwasjustwhatFrancisdid.HecontemplatedthefigureofChrist,brilliantlyportrayedinthefew boldstrokesoftheGospels.Thenhelookedaroundhimto seewhatprogresshadbeenmadetowardstheKingdom.of Heaveninathousandyears;andwhathesawdidnot preciselyfillhisheartwithjoy.ForhesawaChristendom slowlysettlingintoaquiet,uneventfulformalism, almostindistinguishablefromdeath.Hesawhowcarefulattentiontotheletterofthelawcanenablethewellinstructedtoavoidentirelyitsspirit.Hesawnowcompletelythefaithfulofeveryrankandstation,butespecially therichandpowerful,canstillbepractisingChristians.althoughspirituallytheyhaveneverheardofBethlehemand Nazareth.AndheheardtheMaster'sVoicebidhim:"RebuildMyHouse."

Rebuildthathousehedid:notwithPress,Radio,and trumpet;notwithpageantryandsportingevents:notwith magnificentedificesfortheHousesofGod-andofmen. Insteadhedivorcedfromhisheartallloveofearthlycreatures,andsoughttheKingdomofGodinpoverty.prayer andpenance.Itwasnotanewprescription;neitherwas itaveryattractiveone;butitwasdefinitelypopularinthe truesenseoftheterm-forpeopleembraceditinsuchnumbersandwithsuchenthusiasmasledtothediscomfortand embarassmentofthepowersthatbe,andinmanycasesto theirundoing.Anyonecouldhavepointedoutthatthe massofGod'speoplearesolethargicandindifferentthat thepastorhasenoughtodotomakethemkeeptheNatural LawandtheTenCommandments;butFrancisbelongedto thatscepticalschoolofexperimentalscientistswhichinsuch mattersrejectsalltestimonynotbasedonexperiment.He triedtheexperiment,andtheearthquakewhichfollowed showedwhatjustonefaithfulfollowerofChristmayaccomplishbytheGraceofGod.

NowtheuniquenessoftheFranciscanmessageliesnot aloneinitspopularappealtofollowChrist,butalsointhe insistencewithwhichGodhasdeignedtoremindusofit. Forpreciselyinthismodernage,whenFrancishadbeen relegatedtotheranksofsimple-mindedandemasculate loversoflittlebirds,thesamemessageashadrockedthe UmbrianhillsfellfromthelipsofOurLadyatFatima.And inthathour,whenCommunismseemedbutaneccentricity ofsmallbandsofBohemians,Marygavetotheworld,as theoneanswertotheRedmenace,thatsimpleexhortation tofollowChristinthelessspectacularofhisdeeds.How farwehavetakenittoheartleteachanswerforhimself.

Itwouldbeoptimistictoexpectthatthecomingofthe FranciscanswillspellthedeathofCommunisminthiscountry.Itisnottoomuch,however,tosaythattherebirthoftheFranciscanspiritcanbanishitfromtheworld.

PRESSOPINION.

Aspartofthecommendable, ifnecessarilyinsufficient,ef-fortswhichtheBritishLabour Partymakesfromtimetotime topersuadeContinentalSocialiststhattheyreallyneednot besohostiletotheChristianreligion,andthattheywouldfare muchbetterelectorallyifthey werenot,Mr.Attleehasgiven aninterviewtotheRhineland DeutscheTagespostonthepart playedbyChristianityinthe earlydaysoftheMovement;for, saidMr.Attlee:-

A.:Permitme,"Doubtful"to commentfirstonthelatterportionofyourletter.Howeveryou mayfeelinthismatter,please, Iaskyou,donotletangerenter intoyoursoul.Forangermore thanmostthingscancloudthe understandingandcomebetweenyouandGod.And,withoutGod,withoutaclearunderstandingofHisgoodnessandHis loveforeachoneofHis children,theproblemthatperp_ lexesyouhasnosolution.To understand,howevervaguely, onemustkeepintouchwithGod andtryasbestonemaytosee thingsasHedoes.

TOPUNISHSIN?

YouaskwhyGodallowslittle childrentosufferso.Thereare timeswhensorrowandsuffering areeasyenoughtoexplain.Sin makesuscriminalsinGod's eyes.Sinis-theactofadisobedientandungratefulchild. Throughsin,thesinnertriesto upsetGod'swork,smashthe moralorderoftheuniverseand harmGod'sunprotectedlittle ones.Whenpain,death,sickness,sorrow,breakoverthe sinner'shead,theyarethe thunderingsofGod'sjustwrath. Sufferingpunishessin.Thatis oneaspectofsuffering,theonly oneknowntotheJewsbefore Christcame.TheJewswho cametoChristallcuriousabout amanbornblindcouldonly thinkofsufferingasapunishmentforsin:"Whohassinned, thismanorhisparents?"they asked.Ifhewasblind,hisblindnessmustbetheresultof some-one'ssin.Theycouldsee nootherexplanation.

Butthatcannotbetheonly explanation.ForChristOur Lordsuffered.AndHewas withoutsin.AndMaryHisMothersuffered.Shetoowas sinless.Andsotodaymanyinnocentpeoplebothyoungand oldsuffer.Theysuffer,howtrue thatis butwhy?

INSUFFERINGS, GLORY.

Youmayshrug,andsaythis isfantasticnonsense.Butlook intothehistoryofGod'sdealingswithHischosenonesand youwillagreethatitisnotso fantastic.Sorrowandsuffering accompaniedOurBlessedLady throughmostofherlife.St. JohntheBaptistbeganlifewith voluntaryrenunciationofhome, countrymen,civilizedsociety andendeditwithdeathatthe handofHerod.St.Paultoldof hissufferingsforChrist"Five timestheJewsscourgedme, andsparedmebutonelashin theforty;threetimesIwas beatenwithrods,onceIwas stoned;Ihavebeenshipwrecked threetimes;Ihavespent anightandadayasacastawayatsea.WhatjourneysIhave undertaken,indangerfromrivers,indangersfromrobbers, indangerfrommyownpeople. indangerfromtheGentiles; dangerincities,dangerinthe wilderness,dangerinthesea, dangerfromfalsebrethren!I havemetwithtoilandweariness,sooftenbeensleepless,hungryandthirsty,sooften deniedmyselffood,gonecoldand naked."(2Cor.XI.24-27.)Paul didnotforetellhisend-death atthehandoftheRomanexecutionsquad.ButPauldidsay thathereckonedallthesufferingsofthisworldasunworthy tobecomparedwiththeglory tocome.Morethanthathegloriedinhissufferingsforitwas inhissufferingsthatthepower ofChristdweltinhim.

Ihavenevermetasinglefallen-awayCatholic,insometwentyyears'experienceatcalling onfallen-awayCatholics,who toldmethathegaveupthe practiceoftheCatholicreligion becausehewasconvincedafter longstudyanddeepprayerthat theCatholicreligionwasnot thereligionofChrist.Many mayhavesaidthattheywere convincedthattheCatholicreligionwaswrong;buttherewas nothingaboutlongstudyand deepprayerinthestatement, andaquestionortwoalways provedthattherewaslittleor nothingoflongstudyanddeep prayerinfact.Theremayhave beenlongstudyoverthedivine charmsofacertainyounglady ofstronganti-Catholictendencieswhorefusedtotoleratethe ideaofmarriagebeforeaCatholicpriest,orofco-operation withaCatholicinanyofthe dutiesimposedbyhisreligion. Oragirlmayhavehadher heartfixedmorefirmlyonmarriagethanonheaven,andwhen amancamealongwithaproposaloftheformer,couldnot resisthimeventhoughhewas thekindofamanforwhomshe wouldhavetosacrificethelatter.Ofcoursethatisnotthe waytheytellthestory.They foundoutthattheCatholic Churchwaswrongintheexact momentwhentheychoseto marryoutsideherpale.

TheliberalSouthAfricanandthereareliberalsinSouth Africa-readilyadmitsthatthe Africanisasavage,buthethinks thatitishightimethathe washedoffhispaintandceased beingasavage.TheAfrikaner, committedtothestrangebelief thatthereisamysticalwedding betweenblacknessandsavagery, willnotmeettheliberalanywhereintheargumentabout race.Andthepresentgovernaient,Afrikaansandnationalistic,encouragesSouthAfricans tobelievethattheAfricanisa savageincapableofeverbecominganythingelse.Thereisa hardheadedthoughmisguided reasonforclingingtothisopinion:thefalsebeliefthatSouth Africaneconomywouldbe thrownintoconfusionifAfricans weretreatedasmenwitha righttoalivingwage.

Sincetheterminologyisbound tocauseconfusion,itmightbe welltoclarifytheterms.An African,ornative,isablack man,aBantu:aSouthAfrican isa lish-speaking,whiteSouthAfrican,Engandgenerallyof Britishancestry;andanAfrikanerisawhiteSouthAfrican,Afrikaans-speaking,andusuallyofDutchorFrenchdescent. Afrikaans,withEnglishoneof thecountry'stwoofficiallanguages.isamodernformof Dutch.spokenonlyinSouth Africa.

PATIENCEWEARSTHIN

Americanswouldrefertothe AfricanasaNegro.Heisa simplecreature,butheisnota fool.Heknowsthatheisasa vage;andheisanxioustoleave hissavagerybehindhim.Hecan thinkforhimself,eventhough histhoughtsareoftentheconfused,bitterthoughtsofawhippedchild.Hecanaddtwoand two.Heispatient,butwitha patiencethatisbeginningto wearthin.Heknowsthatthe whitemanhastheupperhand now,buthealsoknowsthat arithmeticisonhisside-arithmeticandtime.Thewhiteman planswhatlittlefamilyhehas scientifically;theblackmanis hopelesslyunscientific-anddistressinglyprolific.Becauseheis miserablypoor,hecannotgive tohischildrentheeducation thatwillleadhispeopleaway fromsavagery;buttothechosen few,atthecostofincredible sacrifice,hemanagestogivecovetedhighereducation.

Unfortunately,thoughthe educationoftheAfricanwho hasrisenabovetheilliteracyof hispeopleismodern,itistoo oftenmodernintheworstsense andisadoubtfulblessing.Itis adangerouslylopsidedmassof unrelatedfactsandundigested theoriesacauiredinspiteof whiteprejudice.Consciousall thetimeofhissupposedintrinsic inferioritytoanythingwhite,the Africanstudieswithacomplex. Hisassimilationoffactand theoryistincturedwithhisspiritualsuffering,colouredbyhis

bitterness-abitternessthat growsindepthwiththeextent ofhisstudies.

LIMITEDVISION

AndtheAfrican'svisionislimited.Hispovertyandhislack ofopportunityseetothat.The onlywhitemanheknowsisthe manwhodenieshispeoplethe righttoliveasmen.Becausehe isconvincedthatthehopeof justicethroughconstitutional meansisavainhope,helooks withinhimself-aselfgrown achievement-forshortercuts toequity.Hisbitternessdoes notallowhimtoseethatthe whiteSouthAfricanisnotthe finalwordonwhiteculture,nor willhissullen,broodingsoullet himbelievethateveninSouth Africatherearemen,white men,whoareworkingforhis betterment.Hehasgrownaccustomedtothewhip.Heis fascinatedbythehandthat holdsthewhip.Hispeoplelook tohimforguidance,forcanhe notreadandwriteandtalkas thewhiteman?Hispeoplehear himmurmuragainstthewhip. Tomurmurmustberight.They echohisresentment.Hegives themnewreasonsformurmuring.Thatmurmurspreadsfrom thecrowded"locations"outside thecitiestotheplainsandbeyondthemountainstillit reachestheremotestAfrican hut.Thewhiteman,rememberingtheKaffirwars,swingsthe whipmorevigorously,fearlendconfidentbecauseofacademic ingstrengthtohisarm. EnterstheCommunist-the tireless,audaciousCommunist whohasdaredtoseek(andhas found)convertseveninWashingtonandWestminster.

TheAfricanisnotyetaCommunist.

DEADLYWEAPON

NownoteveryAfricanisilliterate,andtheCommunist knowsthathisapproachtothe educatednativemustbesubtle. TheAfricanwhohasbeento collegefeelsthathemustlead hisownpeople.Heistiredof whiteruleandsuspiciousofall whitemen.TheCommunist PartyofSouthAfricahasso farhumouredhim,givingtoan African,MosesKotane,oneof thehighestexecutivepositions intheParty. Schoolteachersarespecial objectivesofRedpropaganda, andCommunistshavemetwith fargreatersuccessinthisdevilishapostolatethanSouth

Africansrealizeorcaretoadmit. Noristheirsuccesssurprising, fortheCommunistshaveavery powerfulpropagandaweaponforthemunusual-thetruth.In seasonandoutofseasonthey keepbeforetheangryeyesof theeducatedAfricantheinjusticeswhichhispeoplesuffer. Everynewpieceofrepressive legislationisbrandishedprovocativelybeforehim.And,hand in preaching,handwiththisinflammatory thereisacleverap- pealtohisnaturalprideinhis ownachievementandamischievousexploitationofthelimitationsofthatachievement. "Youarenotliketherestof yourpeople-yourunfortunate people,Youhavestudied.You arealearnedman,agreatman, aleader."

LEADERS

CommunistsknowtheAfrican,forallhisschooling,isstill achild."YourpeopleareSouth Africa'smostpreciouspossession.Withoutyourpeople,who wouldminethegold?Who wouldgatherthediamondsfrom theearth?Whowouldgrowthe food?Thewhitemancannot workwithhishands.Hehas forgottenhow.Ifyourpeople werenotpaidstarvationwages,thewhitemanwouldbepoor. Whyshouldyourpeoplelivein hovelsoutsidethecitiesin whichmenwhohavegrownrich byyourlabourliveinluxury? Youmustworkforthem,buton theirownterms.Theywon'tlet youformunions.Theywon't giveyouthevote.Why?Becausetheyfearyou.Theyknow thatyoucancripplethem,break them,ifonlyyourpeoplecould findaleader ifonlythey couldfindaleader..."

ThisisnotCommunism.Itis theunfortunatetruth.Thisis talkthattheAfricancanunderstand.Itistalkthatlightsafire inhimthatishalfofheaven andhalfofhell.HeisnotinterestedinRussia,buthelistens tomenwhospeakoftheRussian revoltanddreamsofbeing masterinthelandheconsiders hisown.

EVENWORMSTURN

Thewhitemanfearsthenative,eventhoughheisbarely consciousofhisfear.Thatfear isevidenitinsomuchofhis legislation.Heisblinded tohisfearbyhiscontempt oftheAfrican.Herefuses tobelievethatsoservileacreaturewilleverdaretoquestion hisauthorityorhissuperiority. Thehabitofcommandhasgrown withhisowngrowing.Asa childhehadvirtualslavesobedienttohiswhim,thecringing blackswholivedinthehinterlandofhisfather'shome.Grown tomanhood,hefindsitdifficult tolayasidewhathasbecomea habitofmind.

"CHOSENRACE"CULT

TheUnitedParty(theparty ledbyGeneralSmuts)inwhich SouthAfrica'sfewliberalswere allowedtoinfluencepolicy,has beenthrownoutofpowerby theuncompromisingNationalist Party.Smutsatleastspokethe languageofpeace,andhemade promises.Dr.Malan,theNationalistPremier,doesnotdisguisehisaims:TheAfrican hasbeenspoiled.Hehasdared toaskforprivilege.Givehim privilege,andtherewillbeno endtohisasking.Hewilldemandthevote,andwhiteSouth Africawillbelostinaseaof blackbarbarism.Buttheblack manwillgetnovote.Thefew privilegeshehasshallbetaken fromhim.Heshalllearnagain alessonheisfastforgetting: thereisonemasterinSouth Africa,andthatmasteriswhite.

ItisnotonlytheAfricanwho isrestiveundertheMalan administration.TheNationalist isanextremeAfrikanerwho hateseverythingBritishalmost asmuchashehatesanything black.HeseeshisAfrikaans culturethreatenedbyboththe whiteandtheblacknon-Afrikaner.Englishisforhimaforeigntongue.WhenSouthAfrica becomesarepublic-asheis determineditshallbecomeeverytraceofAnglo-Saxon culturewillbeoutlawed.

CALVINISM

ButtheEnglish-speaking SouthAfrican,nocowedsavage, isequallydeterminedSouth Africashallnotbecomeaculturalbackwater.Herebels againstAfrikaansnationalism, andhescoffsatthesombre, cheerlessCalvinismwhichthe Afrikanerhasinterwovenwith hispolitics.But,whilehescoffs, heknowsthattheDutchReformedChurchisapowerinthe land,andhefearsit.Hehasseen theeffectsofAfrikaansCalvinismonthesmallertowns, strongholdsofnationalism,and heknowsthat,shouldtheDutch Churcheverjockeyitselfintoa positionwhereitwouldbeable todictatetoCapeTown, Durban,andJohannesburg, SouthAfricawouldbetrulya culturaldesert,strippedofart, drama,andliterature.Dr.Malanwashimselfonceaminister oftheDutchChurch;Dr.Nicol. theadministratorofthepowerful

TransvaalProvince,isoneofthe moreinfluentialdivinesinthe DutchChurch.AfrikaansCalvinismissocloselyidentified withAfrikaansnationalismthat themanwholeavestheDutch Churchforanotherisconsidered bothatraitorandanapostate.

PERSECUTIONTHREAT

TheCatholicChurchinSouth Africahasreasonsofitsownfor distrustingthisclosealliance betweenAfrikaansCalvinism andAfrikaansNationalism,for themorestaunchlyreligiousan Afrikaneristhemorebitterly doeshehatetheChurch,which hehasbeentaughtfromchildhoodtocall"theRomanDanger" (dieRoomsegevaar).OnspecifiedSundayseveryCalvinist ministerinSouthAfricais obligedbyasynodalorderto preachagainstCatholicism.Dr. Malanhasnotallowedhispoliticstosoftenhisownhostility towardtheChurch.Onarecent Europeantourhepointedly omittedfromavisittoRomethe courtesycallontheHolyFather;andtheonlynotable namesmissingontheinvitation listheissuedforhisfirstofficial gardenpartyinCapeTown werethoseoftheApostolicDelegateandtheBishopofCape Town.Would-beimmigrantsto SouthAfricaknowthatthesuccessoftheirappealtobeallowedtosettleinSouthAfrica dependsupontheskillwith whichtheycanconcealthefact thattheyareCatholic.Priests andnunsworkingamongstthe colouredandAfricansfeelwith goodreasonthattherealization oftherepublicandreamsofthe Nationalistswillmeantheend oftheirwork.Thoughthegovernmenthasnotexpressedits hostilitytowardtheChurchofficially,noCatholichasany doubtthatsuchhostilitydoes existandthatitwillspeedily becomespecificintheshapeof discriminatorylawsshould SouthAfricaeverbecomean Afrikanerrepublic.

MINORITYRULES

ThattheNationalistsarein poweratallisstrange.Theydo notspeakforthemajorityof SouthAfricans.Atthelast electionstheypolledfewervotes thantheUnitedParty,but,becausetheygainedheavilyinthe ruralconstituencies,theyfound themselvesinpowerwitha smallmajorityofseats.Nov theyareinahurrytotakefullestadvantageofanopportunity thateventheydidnotexpect. TheEnglish-speakingSouth AfricansandtheliberalAfrikaners,underthepoliticalleadershipofGeneralSmuts,arefightingtheNationalistsfiercelyin theHouseofAssemblyandout ofit.Feelingistense,andlately politicalmeetingshavebeen brokenupbyhooliganismand bloodletting.

TheUnitedPartyismoreliberalthantheNationalistinits nativepolicy-atleastonpaper.ThecynicalAfrican,however,is notconvincedofthegoodfaith oftheParty,andtheCommunist isathisshouldertowhisper, "Insincerity!"Justhowlittle confidencehehasinSouth Africanliberalismwasshown earlierthisyearbyagesturewhichshockedthecountry profoundly:TheAfricansofthe CapeProvincesentaCommunist, SamKahn,torepresentthemin parliament.Don'trunawaywith thestrangeideathattheAfrican hasthefranchise.Hehasnot. Butheisallowedtosendthree whiterepresentativesofhis peopletoparliament.Howlong hewillenjoythatlittlemeasure ofrepresentationisuncertain.

FURTHERCOMPLICATIONS

RacialproblemsinSouth Africaarefurthercomplicated bytheexistenceoftwoother nonwhitegroups-theIndians andtheCapeColoureds.These areminoritygroups,buttheyarearticulateandnotashelpless intellectuallynorascrushed spirituallyastheAfricans.

TheIndiansarechieflyNatal'sproblem.(Natalisoneof thefourProvincesoftheUnion). TheycametoSouthAfricaoriginallytoworkthesugarplantationsofNatal.Theyarenow stronglyentrenchedtherefinanciallyandnumerically.The Africansdislikethemandenvy thembecauseoftheirwealth, andbecausethatwealthhas beenattheirexpense.The whitesdislikethembecausethey overrunDurbanandbecause theyownmuchvaluableproperty.Intherecentraceriotsin DurbanandPietermaritzburg, theZulus(oneoftheAfrican tribes)hadtheactivesympathy ofmanyofthewhites.

SPIRITEDRESENTMENT

TheCapeColouredsareconcentratedchieflyintheWestern Cape.Theyarethedescendants oftheearlylicitandillicit unionsbetweenthefirstwhite settlersandtheHottentots (aboriginalsoftheCape).Their temperjustnowisveryugly; andtheirangerisrighteous.The Nationalistgovernmenthasgone
