ReferringtotheEducation Actof1944andcriticismofthe Church'sstandonit,theCardinaldeclared:

"Itisintolerablethatwe shouldberegardedasobstaclestoprogressineducation simplybecausewerefusetoacceptadeathsentenceforour schools.Pressthejusticeofour claimtothecandidatesatthe forthcomingelection...Wewant themtotellustheirviewscandidlyandwithoutevasion.When Youhaveheardtheiranswers, thenuseyourvote,andvoteaccordingtoyourconscience."

Catholicscontendthatthe EducationActimposesunfair andtremendousfinancialburdensupontheChurchforthe reorganizationofschoolsand theextensionoffacilities.

Speakingwithaslightcold, therecentlyailingCardinal wentontosaythatnomodern Britishgovernmentwouldreally wanttodiscriminateagainst Catholicschools.These,hesaid, sufferhardshipsbecausethefull justiceoftheircauseisnot knownnorunderstood,adding thatCatholicschoolmanagers

What,then,isaSaint?Aboveallahumanbeingwho hasperfectlyattunedhisorherspiritualfacultiestothe DivineWill.Inpracticethisamountstotheconstantexercise,ofheroicvirtue.Yettherigoursofvirtuedonot destroythehumanpersonalityoftheSaint.Modernsuperficialitytalksaboutthedangerofrepressioninthe Christianlife,withoutrealisingthattheChristianvirtues call,notsomuchforrepressionasforsublimation. HencetheSaintperformstheordinaryactionswe call"human,"buttheyareorientatedbya singlepureintention.TheiractionsareChristocentric.ThehumanaspectoftheSaintsneedsemphasisin ourdaylargelybecause,sincethedecayofChristianart, hideousmass-producedplastercastshaveregimentedthem intobattalions-ofdyspepticecclesiasticsalllookingalikeand allextremelyimprobable.Butthereishappilyarevival inChristianartasinhagiography.TheSaints,then,like OurLord,werepersonswholivedverysimilarlytoourselvesand,inmanycases,wentunnoticedamongtheircontemporaries.Indeedsomeonedaredtodescribethemas the"sinnerswhokeptontrying."

ButSaintsaremorethanmerehistoricalmemories. America,afterproducingbiggerandbetterA.bombstoan unknownextent,hasnowcome intopossessionofthe"know how"ofastillmoredreadful weapon,thehydrogenbomb, whosedestructivepowersare claimedtobealmostinconceivablyvast,sothatitiscapableof blottingoutwholecitiesand evencountrysides,withmillions uponmillionsofthehuman race.

Forallweknow,Russian sciencemaybewelladvanced intheproductionofthishorror also-forthereisgoodreasonto doubttheconfidentassumptions ofWesternsuperiorityinapplied scienceswhichhaveprevailed

hithertoinWashington.Inthese circumstances,theChairmanof theU.S.AtomicCommission, SenatorMcMahon,hasurged thatonemoreattemptshould bemadetoopenthediscussion ofanagreementonatomic weapons,beforethismost dreadfulofallbombsisproducedand"stockpiled."

Itis,inouropinion,asolemn dutyoftheWesternAllianceto makethislastapproach,andto makeitsincerely:butwehave nohopeofitssuccess-failing a"changeofheart,"which wouldbeaveritablemiracle,in themenwhonowruleinthe Kremlin.Itbecomesclearerthan ever,astheyearspassby,that thedoomofa"genocidal"war cannotbeaverted'byanydevice ofourbankrupt,power-riddenpeculiarStatecraft,butonlyby somenewwayofdeliverance "pasthopeorfeat".

MUNICH,Jan.27.-Astoryofthemisery'oftheliving andthedeathsofhundredsofGermangirlsinSiberiaslave campshasjustbeentoldherebyonewhosurvivedtoreturn afterfouryears.In1948allthegirlsinhercampwere promisedfreedomandtheirreturntoGermany,buttwo constructioncompaniesboughttheirservicesandcontinued tousethemasslavelabourdespitethepromise,thegirl saysinhergraphicaccount.

Thetaleofruthlessmodern enslavementbeginsinFebruary, 1945,whentheRussiansoccupiedtheSilesiantownof Bielitz.Theentirepopulation wasinterned.

"Ournextstopwasprison," writes,thegirlinChristUnder Way,aMunichpublication."We hadtowalk50kilometers (about31miles)withhundreds ofprisonersofwar.Theonly mealintwodayswasapieceif bread,somesoupandsat.erk.aut."

Someweekslatertheywere alltried.Newsthattheguiltless couldgohomecausedmuchjoy. Butdisappointmentfollowed, writesthegirl,whosigns herselfasJ.A.(Hersisteris stillinSiberia).

"Mysister,whohadworked asatypistinthemunicipal administration,wasaccusedof cooperatinginextermination plansdirectedagainstRussians," shegoeson."Shewasforced tosigntheaccusation.Iwas chargedwithhavingtaught childrentohatetheRussiansin

Twocontradictorypicturesaboutthereactionofpriests totherequiredloyaltyoathareshapingthemselvesfromreportscomingoutofCzechoslovakia.

Theregimeclaimsthatthepriestsaretakingtheloyalty oath"joyously"andwithoutanyreservation.Church sources,ontheotherhand,arequotedassayingthatalready150priestshavebeenimprisonedfornotpledgingunlimitedloyaltytotheRedregimeandthatthosewhohave takentheoathhavedonesoreluctantlyandonlyunder severepressure.

Thecruxoftheproblemis thereservationwhichtheBishopshaveinstructedtheir prieststoaddtoanyoathofloyalty10theregime.Intheir instructionstopriestsonOctober21,1949,theBishopssaid:

"SinceasChristians,and muchmoreaspriests,youcan promiseandfulfilonlywhatis notrepugnanttothelawsof GodandoftheChurchandto thenaturalrightsofman,itis necessarytoaddtotheoath prescribedbylaw,eithervocallyorinwriting:'oncondition thatisitnotcontrarytodivine andecclesiasticallawsandthe naturalrightsofman.'"

Theregimenowinsiststhat anysuchreservationrendersthe oathinvalid.Priestswhodo nottakea'valid"oatharedeprivedoftheirsalarycheques andarethreatenedwithbeing oustedfromtheirparishesand deportedtoalabourcamp.

Anotherreportstatesthata newCzechlawattemptstorule outthesealoftheConfession. Accordingtothelaw,thepriest is'boundinduty"torevtalto theauthoritiesupondemand anyinformationwhichhas cometohisknowledgebyway ofconfession.

Meanwhile,thenewOfficefor ChurchAffairshasissuedde.tailedinstructionsonwhatsubjectsshouldbeusedinsermons andhowthesesubjectsshould bedealtwith.Disobedienceto theseinstructions,theofficedeclared,willbeconsidereda punishableoffence.Itisalso reportedthattheregimehasdecreedthatreligiousinstructions inschoolscanbegivenbygovernment-approvedlayteachers. Thismoveisseenasopeningthe waytoCommunistandeven anti-religiouspropagandaduringthereligionclasses.

Whentheregimeorderedincreasedworkinghoursand higherproductionquotaslast fall,itrelated,theworkersdecidedtousethe"mostancient andsacredright"ofastrike. However,theregimebrokeup thestrikebyviolence.."Tensof thousandsofworkerswerearrested,hundredsofotherworkersweredeportedtoforced labourandtomines,"theletter declared,"Inapeople'sdemocracy,itisnottheworking peoplethatmakesdecisions,but thesecretpolicewhichreigns supreme."

Whattheydonotsee-we dowell,atsuchtimes,toremindourselvesofit,andtoadvisetheworldofit-isthatthe Churchexiststo-dayforone purpose,thesamepurposefor whichshehasalwaysexisted.

So,duringtheHolyYear,the Churchwantsyoutorally round,ifyoucangettheGovernmenttogiveyouapassport, andyourbankertogiveyou somemoney,andyouremployer togiveyouaholiday.Notat Bethlehem;thatwouldbethe naturalplacetomeetin,when wewanttocelellratethethirty- ninthgoldenjubileeofOur BlessedLord'sbirth.ButBethlehemisasmallplace;itwas overcrowdedwhenOurLord wasborn,andIexpectitis overcrowdednowworsethan ever.

Andso,indeed,weoughtto; it'sonlybecausesheknowsus sowell,idlecreaturesthatwe are,thattheChurchbringsin theprofitmotiveatall.But theHolyYearindulgenceis somethingonahigherplane thanthat,ithasakindofsacramentalqualityaboutit.We aregoingbackinmemoryover abridgeofnineteenhundred andfiftyyears,tothenight whenJesusChristwasborn; when,asSt.Paulsays,"the kindnessofGod,ourSaviour, dawnedonus,Hisgreatlove forman."

Thekindness,theindulgence ofAlmightyGod;indulgence, thatnight,wasintheair.And iftheChurchshowsuskindnessinremittingourPurgatory, itisn'tanythingmore,anditisn'tmeanttobeanythingmore thanafaintecho,adistantim-

Perhapsthemostnaturalinterpretationofthatgesture whichtheSupremePontiff makesonChristmasEveisto thinkofhimastunnelling throughthewallofaprison; howoftenhavewereadabout that,withourheartsbeating faster,instoriesofescape!Souls freed,wedaretohope,from Purgatory,soulshereandnow reprievedfromsentence-thatis atoncethesymbolicmeaning, andthequasi-sacramentaleffect, oftheHolyYear.

Wereadinthepapertheother daythattheRepublicofEire meanstoshortensentences,to hastenonthereleaseofprisonersinthepublicgaols,inhonourofthisoccasion.Welldone, Eire!Itwasasifsheweredeterminedtobethelastcivilised countryleftinanunhappy world.SpainandItalyhave nowfollowedsuit.

Anunhappyworld-thereare manyprisonsthatwillremain unopened,thisyear;manysentencesthatwillgounremitted. Thetragedyofitisthatour quarrelsruntoodeep,ourprinciplesaretoonearlyconcerned, toallowanyfaciletalkofamnesty.Wearenotcontending likeourancestors,forterritory orformarkets,butforawayof life,aphilosophyofhuman values.Amidthejang,lingsof suchadebate,howshouldthe messageofChristmascome throughundisturbed?

Butremember,althoughour publicfeudsmayseem,atpresent,toopennodoorforanunderstanding,youandI,asChristiansouls,cannotseetheDivinetreasuryofpardonsowidelyopenedwithoutthedutyof askingourselves:"Haveweforgiven?"

Itmeansspiritualgrace,social justice,charitythatgoesbeyond justice,truthandthedutyof thecompletehumanbeing.

Heseeshismissionasthatof strikinganewthespiritualspark ofWesterncivilisationtobring intobeinganewageinthe CatholicChurchwhich,to-day, hebelieves,standsatitsgreatest crisis.Humbly,hesays:

"Humanly,itsoundscrazy. Thereisnothingofhumanprudenceinit.Butitworks.Ithas workedformebecauseIfeelthe presenceofJesusconstantly aboutme."

HeseesCommunismasarod whichGodhaspermittedto goadthehumanrace,tostirthe conscienceofmenoutofthe slothofindifference,complacency,callousignoringofthe sufferingsofthepoor.

Whenheisnotspeaking,he spendsmostofhistimeinbed, husbandinghislittlebitof strength,andpraying,constantly praying.Sometimeshespends fivehoursinprayerinpreparationforasingleaddress.Often hefaints,eitherbeforebeginningtospeak,orafterdeliveringasermon.Heismartyred byweakness24hoursaday.

Lentconnotesthefortydays' fastprecedingEaster.During thepioneerdaysoftheChurch itwascustomaryforsometo fastoneday,othersforseveral, withothersobservingforty hoursofconsecutivetimeasthe periodoffast.St.Athanasius wasthefirsttoenjoinuponhis flockinA.D.331aperiodof fortydaysoffastingpreliminary to,butnotinclusiveof,the stricterfastofHolyWeek.However,withdifferentlocalities observingdifferentcustoms,a greatdivergenceoftheLenten fastexisted.

Duringthefifthcentury,the ChristiansofRomefastedsix weekswithbutthree'weeksof actualfasting,exclusiveofSaturdayandSunday.Aneight weeksofLentenfastingwas observedatJerusalemwhich, withSaturdaysandSundays exempt,gavefortydaysfor fasting.Elsewhere,asatMilan, thefaithfulobservedasix weeks'fastlimited,however,to fivedaysaweek. Atalaterperiodthedesireto observetheexactnumberof fortydaysledtothecustomof startingLentonAshWednesday.Inthefifthcentury, manyofthefaithfulabstained fromeverysortofcreaturethat hadlifewhileothersconfined themselvesstrictlytofish. Overitallwouldfalltheimpe- netrableIronCurtain.Andbehindthatcurtain,wealready know,theCommunistssmother religion,mockhumanmorality andhonesty,condemnfreedom asweakness,andgrindoutof existenceallfinehumanqualities,sensibilitiesanddignity.To theentireworldthislosswould beincalculable,andforcenturiesirreparable.

Democracyandfreedomare plantsofveryslowgrowth. Theyarenotnaturalformsof humanorganization-certainly notintheFarEast.Theydepend,forgrowthanddevelopment,upontheexistenceofsubstantialnumbersofacertain kindofpeoplewhoaregrown overalongtimeWithsufficient militaryforce,aconquered geographicalareamaybefreed inayear.Itmaybeimpossible toresuscitateacrusheddemocr_ aticstateofmindinfiftyyears.

Unlesswe,asWesterners,are willingtoseeourgreathuman investmentintheEastwiped out,somehaven,somesanctuary,mustbefoundonfree Chinasoilforthehumanspirit torally.Somelittlecornerof China,nomatterhowsmall, mustbepreservedfreefrom communism:aplacewherethe Westernkinship,idealsandreligiousfaithoftheChristian Chinesecanbekeptalive.Itis uselesstoentertainhopesthat, withoutevidenceofWestern concern,thewilltofightonwill remainvigorous.TheChinese knowtheycannotbeatMoscow alone.

Tobesure,thosewhowant someintellectualrationalization fordeferringaslongaspossible adirtyjobwhichtheydon't trusttheirowncapacitytoperform,wouldfoolthemselvesand therestofusbyanticipating thatChineseCommunistswill developa"Tito"formofgovernment,andbreakawayfrom Moscow.Inreality,suchadevelopmentisunlikelyinany event.Beyondquestion,thereis novestigeofhopeinthisdirectionunlessbasicissuesofthe struggleagainstcommunismare keptalivefortheChinese. Afterall,MarshalTito himselfhadthevigorousmoral encouragementofWesternEuropesolidlybehindhim.Moreover,theUnitedStateshas

reinforcedthatencouragementwithmaterialaid.Chinese Communists,ontheotherhand, haverepeatedlyavowedtheir loyaltytoMoscow.Andonly Moscowisputtingeithermoral encouragementormaterialaid intoChina.

Ifwearetoinciteanybreak-ingawayfromRussiawithin theChineseCommunistforcesunlikelyassuchaneventuality is-somebasefromwhich freedomandChristianity's forcescanoperatemustbeprovided.Somesmallplatformmust begiventhevoiceoffreeChina. Fromsuchabaseandplatform, atleastaconstantspiritualharassmentofcommunistleadershipcanbeconducted.Themillionsofmenandwomenalreadybehindthecommunistcurtain inChinawhoentertainfriendshipfortheWest,whofeel themselvesideologicallyand intellectuallyintunewithus, canbekeptawarethattheyare notforgottenandforsaken. Unlesssuchabaseforaspirit- ualcounter-revolutionismaintainedinChina,thereisnodoubt atallabouttheoutcomeofthe conflict.

Evenatthislatehourinthe Chineseconflict,somefreeChinesebasecanbeprovidedif Americawillactspeedilyand vigorously.Properuseofthe$75 millionwhichthe81stCongress appropriatedforaidtoChina canchannelmoderateamounts ofmonetaryaidforsoldierpay andforsmallammunitiontothe militaryleaderswhowillfight communism.GeneralPaiChung- hsicommandsamilitaryforce whichiswelltrained,andhas foughtwellwithalmostnoequipmentandlittleammunition.Direct,supervisedaidto theGeneralwouldgoalong waytowardpreservingasanctuaryandoperatingheadquartersforforcesfightingtheCommunists.

Awell-suppiied,trained,small forceofsoldieryontheChinese islandofHainancouldstandoff communistattackersforanindefinitelengthoftime.There aregoodairfieldsonHainan;its harborsaredeep.FromawellfortifiedpositiononHainan, freeChinesecouldcarryout suchaprogrammeagainstcommunistforcestothenorththat theywouldneverbeableto consolidatetheirgovernment sufficientlytocrushaltogether thespiritoffreedom,ChristianityandWesternidealsinterritoryalreadycommunist-occupied.Theterriblemomentumof thecommunistdrivewouldbe broken.

WithproperAmericanadvice, counselandencouragement,a Chinesegovernmentonthe islandofFormosacouldsoconsolidateandreorganizeitsconsiderableforcesthatdangerof communistconquesttherecould beaverted.Establishmentofan Americanmilitaryadvisory grouponFormosacouldspell thedifferencebetweenpermanentmaintenanceofthisisland fortressasnoncommunist,ordo_ minationbytheRedforces.

Themovesnowpromising salvageofsomefragmentof freeChinaare,necessarily,lastditchoperations.Theeleventh hourhasarrivedinthestruggle betweenthefreeChineseand theMoscow-controlledforcesof communism.Thelast-ditchmovesmustthemselvesbeswiftly made.Alltheponderousdocumentation"proving"thatU.S. policyhasbeenrightinthe past-evenifitdidn'tgetresults-willnotnowsaveone footofChinesegroundorone ChineseChristian.

Neitherwillthe$75million whichCongressappropriatedfor aidtoChinahelp,unlessPresidentTrumandecidesquicklyto useit.Sofarasanyoneherein Chinaknows,notapennyof thisfundhasbeendisbursed.If actionisnottakenimmediately, itwillbetoolatefortheWesternworldtodoanything,other thanwanlywatchthegreat nationofChina,andthegreatest Americaninvestmentinhuman beingsinthewholeEast,die behindtheIronCurtainof Russia.
