Catholicscontendthatthe EducationActimposesunfair andtremendousfinancialburdensupontheChurchforthe reorganizationofschoolsand theextensionoffacilities.
Speakingwithaslightcold, therecentlyailingCardinal wentontosaythatnomodern Britishgovernmentwouldreally wanttodiscriminateagainst Catholicschools.These,hesaid, sufferhardshipsbecausethefull justiceoftheircauseisnot knownnorunderstood,adding thatCatholicschoolmanagers

HencetheSaintperformstheordinaryactionswe call"human,"buttheyareorientatedbya singlepureintention.TheiractionsareChristocentric.ThehumanaspectoftheSaintsneedsemphasisin ourdaylargelybecause,sincethedecayofChristianart, hideousmass-producedplastercastshaveregimentedthem intobattalions-ofdyspepticecclesiasticsalllookingalikeand allextremelyimprobable.Butthereishappilyarevival inChristianartasinhagiography.TheSaints,then,like OurLord,werepersonswholivedverysimilarlytoourselvesand,inmanycases,wentunnoticedamongtheircontemporaries.Indeedsomeonedaredtodescribethemas the"sinnerswhokeptontrying."
ButSaintsaremorethanmerehistoricalmemories. Theysurviveasspecialforcesexertingatremendousinfluenceonothermen.ThoughthereisextraordinarydiversityinthgpersonalitiesoftheSaints,allalikearecharacterisedby'anintensebeliefinGod,anintenseloveof JesusChrist,andatremendousdevotiontotheserviceof humanityforTheirsakes.Inourdayswhenthecharityof themanyhasgrowncoldandcourageisblightedbythe spectacleoftheworld'sapostacyandspiritualdegeneration, itisanemblemofhopethattheChurchnotonlyproduces Saintsbutproducesthemwithremarkablefrequency.And theyareSaintsintherealsenseofpeopleofallagesand conditionswhohavepractisedheroicsanctityandwhocontinuetoexertavitalinfluenceoverhumanlivesandhuman affairs.Asmorenamesareengravenonthealtarsofthe Church,soatemorevictorieswonovertheravagesoforiginalsinandthefrailtyoftheflesh,morewitnessessetup tothepotencyofthegraceofGod,morelivingarguments establishedfortheimportanceofbeingholy.

Forallweknow,Russian sciencemaybewelladvanced intheproductionofthishorror also-forthereisgoodreasonto doubttheconfidentassumptions ofWesternsuperiorityinapplied scienceswhichhaveprevailed
hithertoinWashington.Inthese circumstances,theChairmanof theU.S.AtomicCommission, SenatorMcMahon,hasurged thatonemoreattemptshould bemadetoopenthediscussion ofanagreementonatomic weapons,beforethismost dreadfulofallbombsisproducedand"stockpiled."

MUNICH,Jan.27.-Astoryofthemisery'oftheliving andthedeathsofhundredsofGermangirlsinSiberiaslave campshasjustbeentoldherebyonewhosurvivedtoreturn afterfouryears.In1948allthegirlsinhercampwere promisedfreedomandtheirreturntoGermany,buttwo constructioncompaniesboughttheirservicesandcontinued tousethemasslavelabourdespitethepromise,thegirl saysinhergraphicaccount.
Thetaleofruthlessmodern enslavementbeginsinFebruary, 1945,whentheRussiansoccupiedtheSilesiantownof Bielitz.Theentirepopulation wasinterned.
"Ournextstopwasprison," writes,thegirlinChristUnder Way,aMunichpublication."We hadtowalk50kilometers (about31miles)withhundreds ofprisonersofwar.Theonly mealintwodayswasapieceif bread,somesoupandsat.erk.aut."

Twocontradictorypicturesaboutthereactionofpriests totherequiredloyaltyoathareshapingthemselvesfromreportscomingoutofCzechoslovakia.
Theregimeclaimsthatthepriestsaretakingtheloyalty oath"joyously"andwithoutanyreservation.Church sources,ontheotherhand,arequotedassayingthatalready150priestshavebeenimprisonedfornotpledgingunlimitedloyaltytotheRedregimeandthatthosewhohave takentheoathhavedonesoreluctantlyandonlyunder severepressure.
Thecruxoftheproblemis thereservationwhichtheBishopshaveinstructedtheir prieststoaddtoanyoathofloyalty10theregime.Intheir instructionstopriestsonOctober21,1949,theBishopssaid:

Theregimenowinsiststhat anysuchreservationrendersthe oathinvalid.Priestswhodo nottakea'valid"oatharedeprivedoftheirsalarycheques andarethreatenedwithbeing oustedfromtheirparishesand deportedtoalabourcamp.
Anotherreportstatesthata newCzechlawattemptstorule outthesealoftheConfession. Accordingtothelaw,thepriest is'boundinduty"torevtalto theauthoritiesupondemand anyinformationwhichhas cometohisknowledgebyway ofconfession.
Meanwhile,thenewOfficefor ChurchAffairshasissuedde.tailedinstructionsonwhatsubjectsshouldbeusedinsermons andhowthesesubjectsshould bedealtwith.Disobedienceto theseinstructions,theofficedeclared,willbeconsidereda punishableoffence.Itisalso reportedthattheregimehasdecreedthatreligiousinstructions inschoolscanbegivenbygovernment-approvedlayteachers. Perhapsthemostnaturalinterpretationofthatgesture whichtheSupremePontiff makesonChristmasEveisto thinkofhimastunnelling throughthewallofaprison; howoftenhavewereadabout that,withourheartsbeating faster,instoriesofescape!Souls freed,wedaretohope,from Purgatory,soulshereandnow reprievedfromsentence-thatis atoncethesymbolicmeaning, andthequasi-sacramentaleffect, oftheHolyYear.
Wereadinthepapertheother daythattheRepublicofEire meanstoshortensentences,to hastenonthereleaseofprisonersinthepublicgaols,inhonourofthisoccasion.Welldone, Eire!Itwasasifsheweredeterminedtobethelastcivilised countryleftinanunhappy world.SpainandItalyhave nowfollowedsuit.
Anunhappyworld-thereare manyprisonsthatwillremain unopened,thisyear;manysentencesthatwillgounremitted. Thetragedyofitisthatour quarrelsruntoodeep,ourprinciplesaretoonearlyconcerned, toallowanyfaciletalkofamnesty.Wearenotcontending likeourancestors,forterritory orformarkets,butforawayof life,aphilosophyofhuman values.Amidthejang,lingsof suchadebate,howshouldthe messageofChristmascome throughundisturbed?
Butremember,althoughour publicfeudsmayseem,atpresent,toopennodoorforanunderstanding,youandI,asChristiansouls,cannotseetheDivinetreasuryofpardonsowidelyopenedwithoutthedutyof askingourselves:"Haveweforgiven?"

CRUSADEOFGOODNESS
Thatworkhedescribesasa crusadeof"bonta,*aword whichmeansmuchmorethan simplygoodnessorkindness.It impliesanenormousoutflowing ofChristianunselfishness,of self-giving,ofboundlesslove.
Itmeansspiritualgrace,social justice,charitythatgoesbeyond justice,truthandthedutyof thecompletehumanbeing.
Heseeshismissionasthatof strikinganewthespiritualspark ofWesterncivilisationtobring intobeinganewageinthe CatholicChurchwhich,to-day, hebelieves,standsatitsgreatest crisis.Humbly,hesays:
"Humanly,itsoundscrazy. Thereisnothingofhumanprudenceinit.Butitworks.Ithas workedformebecauseIfeelthe presenceofJesusconstantly aboutme."
HeseesCommunismasarod whichGodhaspermittedto goadthehumanrace,tostirthe conscienceofmenoutofthe slothofindifference,complacency,callousignoringofthe sufferingsofthepoor.

Whenheisnotspeaking,he spendsmostofhistimeinbed, husbandinghislittlebitof strength,andpraying,constantly praying.Sometimeshespends fivehoursinprayerinpreparationforasingleaddress.Often hefaints,eitherbeforebeginningtospeak,orafterdeliveringasermon.Heismartyred byweakness24hoursaday.

Temporarycorruptioningovernmentisaneviloutofall proportiontothelosssuffered inhumanresources,aswellas strategicgeographicalpositions.
Corruptionisnoalibiforlack ofaffirmativeactiononthepart oftheU.S.
TheChurch,forexample,is nolessappalledthangovernmentsatcorruptioninhigh places.Nomorethanthe PresidentandStateDepartment,
offact,theVaticanitselfhas alreadyofficiallyanticipated sucharesultifChinaisaltogetheroverrunbythecommunistforces.

Unlesswe,asWesterners,are willingtoseeourgreathuman investmentintheEastwiped out,somehaven,somesanctuary,mustbefoundonfree Chinasoilforthehumanspirit torally.Somelittlecornerof China,nomatterhowsmall, mustbepreservedfreefrom communism:aplacewherethe Westernkinship,idealsandreligiousfaithoftheChristian Chinesecanbekeptalive.Itis uselesstoentertainhopesthat, withoutevidenceofWestern concern,thewilltofightonwill remainvigorous.TheChinese knowtheycannotbeatMoscow alone.
Tobesure,thosewhowant someintellectualrationalization fordeferringaslongaspossible adirtyjobwhichtheydon't trusttheirowncapacitytoperform,wouldfoolthemselvesand therestofusbyanticipating thatChineseCommunistswill developa"Tito"formofgovernment,andbreakawayfrom Moscow.Inreality,suchadevelopmentisunlikelyinany event.Beyondquestion,thereis novestigeofhopeinthisdirectionunlessbasicissuesofthe struggleagainstcommunismare keptalivefortheChinese. Evenatthislatehourinthe Chineseconflict,somefreeChinesebasecanbeprovidedif Americawillactspeedilyand vigorously.Properuseofthe$75 millionwhichthe81stCongress appropriatedforaidtoChina canchannelmoderateamounts ofmonetaryaidforsoldierpay andforsmallammunitiontothe militaryleaderswhowillfight communism.GeneralPaiChung- hsicommandsamilitaryforce whichiswelltrained,andhas foughtwellwithalmostnoequipmentandlittleammunition.Direct,supervisedaidto theGeneralwouldgoalong waytowardpreservingasanctuaryandoperatingheadquartersforforcesfightingtheCommunists.
Awell-suppiied,trained,small forceofsoldieryontheChinese islandofHainancouldstandoff communistattackersforanindefinitelengthoftime.There aregoodairfieldsonHainan;its harborsaredeep.FromawellfortifiedpositiononHainan, freeChinesecouldcarryout suchaprogrammeagainstcommunistforcestothenorththat theywouldneverbeableto consolidatetheirgovernment sufficientlytocrushaltogether thespiritoffreedom,ChristianityandWesternidealsinterritoryalreadycommunist-occupied.Theterriblemomentumof thecommunistdrivewouldbe broken.
WithproperAmericanadvice, counselandencouragement,a Chinesegovernmentonthe islandofFormosacouldsoconsolidateandreorganizeitsconsiderableforcesthatdangerof communistconquesttherecould beaverted.Establishmentofan Americanmilitaryadvisory grouponFormosacouldspell thedifferencebetweenpermanentmaintenanceofthisisland fortressasnoncommunist,ordo_ minationbytheRedforces.
