Hisearlystudiesweremade atthePiousSchoolsofSanPantaleone,whencehepassedtothe RomanCollege.Attheageof 16yearsheresolvedtobecome apriest,andon°May16,1820, attheageof22,hewasordained.Twomonthslaterhe obtainedhisDoctorateofTheology. TheSocietyofPallottineFatherswasfoundedbyFather Pallottiin1835topreservethe FaithamongCatholics,andto workamongnon-Catholicsand infidels.
Thefoundergavetohissocietythenameof"Catholic Apostolate";afterwardschanged byPiusIXtothe"PiousSociety sentativesoftheRomanaristocracy,bishops,cardinals,andeven ofMission."
OnJanuary9,1835,Father Pallotticonceivedtheplanof hisinstituteandhavingsubmittedittotheApostolicSee,receivedtherequiredapprobation throughtheCardinalVicar, Odescalchi,onMay29,andfinallybyPopeGregoryXVIon July14ofthesameyear.

Duringthecholeraplagueof 1837,Pallotticonstantlyendangeredhislifeinministeringto thestricken.
Afteradayspentinapostolic labourhewasaccustomedto passalmostthewholenightin prayer,disciplininghimselfeven toblood,andsleepingforafew hoursonachairoronthebare floor.
ThemostdistinguishedreprePopesGregoryXVIandPiusIX honouredhim,buttheonlyadvantagehetookoftheirfriendship ofthepoor. Evenasayoungman,heoften returnedhomebarefooted,after havinggivenawayhalfhisclothinginalms;andmorethanonce washeknowntohavegiven awayhisbedtotheneedy.

OnJanuary9,1835,Father Pallotticonceivedtheplanof hisinstituteandhavingsubmittedittotheApostolicSee,receivedtherequiredapprobation throughtheCardinalVicar, Odescalchi,onMay29,andfinallybyPopeGregoryXVIon July14ofthesameyear.

Theviolenceoccurredwhena Communist-agitatedcrowd,estimatedat10,000,attemptedto occupyseverallocked-out metalfactorieswhichwere guardedbypolice.Thethrong ofworkersreportedlycarried handgrenades,firearmsand bluntweapons.
About60personswerereportedwoundedinthefighting,30 seriously.pfthesixkilled,it wassaid,onlyonewasactually ait'orkeratthemetalfactory, theotherfivebeingworkers fromnear-byfarms.

Almostfouryearsagoahigh dignitaryoftheChurch-agitat- ed,andperhapsfilledwithforeboding-arrivedattheVatican. OntheprecedingChristmaseve hisnamehadbeenannounced bytheHolyFatherasoneofthe Cardinals-electinwhatwasperhapsthemostremarkableselectionofCardinalstotheSacred CollegeintheChurch'shistory. Thatsolitaryfigurewasthe peasant-bornJosephMindszenty,ArchbishopofEsztergom, andPrince-PrimateofHungary. Hisdeparturefromhiscountry hadbeendeliberatelydelayedby theRedArniy,andhewasa weeklate.Nextdayheand theotherCardinalsreceivedthe RedHatfromPopePiusXII. AftertheRedHathadbeen conferredonArchbishopMindszenty,theHolyFatherinterruptedthesolemnityoftheoccasiontobenddownandwhispertohim:"Youwillbethe firsttohavethisopportunity."ThesignificanceoftheconferringoftheRedHatisthatthe recipientisexpectedtobefaithfuluntodeath,"fortheexaltationoftheblessedfaith."
Fromthatmomentuntilhis arrestinDecember,1948,the Cardinalhadlivedonborrowed time.Heknewhewasgoing tobearrestedbytheCommunistregimeinHungary,under ordersfromMoscow,andhewas preparedforitwhentheycame forhimonSt.Stephen'sDay. Hewasevenpreparedforthe martyrdomofthetongueto whichheknewhewouldbe subjected-forhehadwarned hisclergythatany"confession" thatmightonedayappearover hisnamewouldonlybetheresultof"humanfrailty"-thathe mightbedruggedandthus trickedintoconfessingwhathe hadnotcommitted.
Themartyrdomofthetongue whichheexpectedwasnottobe thesamemartyrdomofthetonguethatisdepictedinhistitularChurchinRome,whichis MonteCelio's5th,centuryrotundaofSt.Stephen(thefirst martyr),andonthewallsof whichisafrescowhichtellsof afourthcenturypersecutionof ChristiansinNorthAfricaby KingUncricus,inwhichthose whoopposedtheKinghadtheir tongueandhandscutoff-but themid-twentiethcenturymar-tyrdomofthetonguethatcan nolongerclearlyprofessadoctrinetowhichhehaddevoted hislife.OnSt.Stephen'sDay, 1948,whenhewasarrested,he wasstillthemanofburning courage-themanwhosefearlessspiritrecallsaSt.Ambrose facingTheodosius-aSt.John FisherconfrontingHenry-yet,fortydayslater,heappearedin Courtasamanwhohad"confessed."
Onthe9th.December,1948just17daysbeforetheCardinalwasarrested-therearrivedinBudapesttenmembersof theSovietSecretPolice,which includedtwoexpertson"confession," Krevitskynamed,respectively, andDr.Kaftanoff. ThetaskassignedtothisCommissionwastopersuadethe CardinaltoleaveHungary.This herefusedtodo,andonDecember21st.,atelegramarrived fromMoscoworderinghisarrest onthe26th.Thisdulytook placeintheearlyhoursofthat morning,afterwhichhewas handedovertothechiefofthe HungarianSecretPolice-aman namedPeterGabor,atAndrassy,utcaNo.60.Theten membfrsoftheSovietSecret Policewerealsopresent.Later ontheCardinalwastakento thetorturechamber,accompaniedbytheinfamousDr.Kaftanoff.
Inobtaininga"confession," oneoftwodrugsisusedbythe
SovietSecretPolice.Thefirst isactedron,whichisadministeredinwaterorsoupafterthe victimisfedforseveraldayson highlysaltedfish,adietthat naturallyproducesanunquenchablethirst.Thisdrug directlyaffectsthenerves,and atfirstproducesafeelingof courage.Thereaction,however,producesaviolentheadacheanddizziness.Thisisfollowedbyfear,andthefinal stageisasenseofabsolutehelp-lessnessandinabilitytoresist suggestionsfromothers,which endsinmoralcollapse.Thealternativedrugisscopomorphine,whichreducesthevictimtoa kindofdreamworld,because thebrainbecomescompletely drugged.Themindfunctions throughamazeofcontradictory pictures,sothatwill-poweris completelylost.
IthinkIhavesaidsufficient, gentlemen,toenableyouto formthecorrectconclusionasto whathappenedinthose40days tobringaboutsuchachangein thefearlessspiritofJoseph Mindszenty-and40daysisa longtimetobeatthemercyof aninfamousscoundrellikeDr. Kaftanoffandthosewhohelped him.Itisenoughformeto quoteforyouthewordsof Mgr.Peterffy,Rectorofthe PontificalHungarianInstitutein Rome,whosaidofthe"confession":"ThisisnottheMindszentyweknew.Itistheautomaticwritingofamanwithhis mindclouded."
Thestrongandvibrantresponsethroughouttheworldto thearrestand"trial"ofCardnal Mindszentywasitselfaproofof whatfundamentalchordsinhumannaturehadbeenthusviolentlyanddiscordantlystruck.
TheCommunistsareventuring intoverydeepwaters,arepit-tingthemselvesagainstbasic things;andtheyarealsopitting themselvesnotonlyagainst men,whomtheycanseizeand destroy,butagainstaFaith whichwillendure,torecordone day,asachapteramongthe manypersecutions,theemergence,andtherage,ofthisthe straitestsectofthematerialists.
To-day,gentlemen,accordingtothelatestAmericanArmyIntelligencesources,Cardinal Mindszentylanguishesininduced prison,insanityatGyujtoFoghar eastofBudapest.His mindhasgivenwayunderpoi- soning,sothatheisnowina constantstateofdelirium.He doesnotknowthathisappeal wasrefusedonJuly9th.oflast year.Besides,withhisintellectundermined,theCardinal couldno slanderslongerchallengethe tensionsandhypocriticalpreofthisdiabolicalregime.ButGodwillnotbe mocked.Onlytwomenwere allowedintheprelate'sprison cell.ColonelBiederman'sbullet-filledbodywasfoundina corridoratAndrassyUtca.ColonelOskowasshotescaping acrosstheborder.Allsixteen of deadtheCardinal'sguardsare ormissing.ThewhereaboutsoftheinfamousPeter Gabor,headoftheSecretPoliceheadquarters,isunknown,andtherecent"treason"trialof LazioRajksewedupthelips ofanotherwitness-witha hangman'srope.

womanintheGardenofEden, andfor2,000yearshehasnever ceasedinhiseffortstousethe worldandtheweaknessof humannatureinanattemptto frustrateGod'splanfortheRedemptionofmankind.One couldsafelysaythatiftheCotholicChurchwereapurely humaninstitution,itwouldhave perishedlongago.Indeedit wouldnothavesurviveditsinfancy.Yeteveryblowthatwas struckatherhasbeenparried fromabove.Herod-theKing -castsPeterintoprison-bound inchains.Downcomesthe AngelofGod,blazingwhite fromtheEternalPresence, breaksthechains-flingsopen thegates.Peterisfree-Herod struckdead.
TheChurchgrew-reached theheartofthepaganRoman Empire, Caesars.challengingtheproud IntheendaCaesar yieldedhisthronetoPeter"ThouhasconqUered,Galilean." Havingfailedthroughthecenturiesinhiseffortstoturnthe worldaaginstGod,itwould seemthatSataninthesedaysinwhichwelivehaslaunchedon theworldsomethingwhichhe hopeswillturntheworldatlast againstGod.ForAtheistic CommunismmaywellbeSatan's trumpcard.Wespeakofthe CatholicChurchastheMystical BodyofChrist.InAtheistic Communismweseeaparallel framework-buttheveryan- tithesisofGod'splanforHis Church.AtheisticCommunism isthemysticalbodyofantiChrist.Itisthephilosophyof naturalismbroughttoitshideousultimate.
AsforthestrengthofAtheisticCommunism,weshouldhave nodoubtinourminds.China isnowcompletelyincorporated intotheCommunistEmpire,and ifweconsidertheweaknessof, anddivisionsin,Indiaand South-EasternAsia,aswellas thevacillatingpolicyofBritain andAmericainregardtothem, thenthepossibilityoftheir swellingtheCommunistEmpire soastoinclude1,000million Asiatics,iswellwithinprospect ofbeing.
TheforcesofAtheisticCommunismstandpoisedto-day readyatthemomenttooverrunwhatwasonceChristian Europe-thatsameEuropethat gaveusourreligionandour culture.Uptothistimethey havebeenrestrainedfromdoing sobythecertainknowledgethat Americahadabsolutepossession oftheatomicbomb.Thatsituationholdsgoodnolonger,and by1953Russiawillhaveaconsiderablestockpileofatomic bombsinreserve.Whatthat meanswaswellillustratedrecentlywhenahigh-rankingSovietpersonattendingacelebrationstagedbyaCommunist satellitewasinducedbyanother guesttotalk.Thisiswhathe said:"Ifonlywecouldhold thesegentlemenofWashington andLondonatthecardtable for,say,another24months,we couldthencallitadaybyin- vitingthemtohandovertheir walletswithoutmuchadoand tellingthemtogetgoing- home."
TheforcesofAtheisticCommunismareevenreadytostorm thecentreofChristianity-Romeitself.Some70or80yearsago; St.JohnBoscoprophesiedthat theRussianswouldstabletheir horsesinSt.Peter's.Itis knownthatextraordinarypre-cautionshavebeentakenin Romeitself.Theseprecautionsarenottheresultoffear,but whatprudenceitselfdemandsin
thefaceofanextraordinary threat.TheCatholicChurch iscalmasalwaysabouttheeventualoutcome.Itisno wonderthatthePoperegards thisperiodinwhichweliveas themostcriticalinthelonghistoryoftheChurch,anditwould seemthatundertheguidanceof thelivingPontiffGodisprepar- ingusforanextraordinaryconflictwithevil.
And,humanlyspeaking,Pius XII,isthemenofthehour,for thehourisdark.Thereisnot anationonthisearthwhichhas notheardthunderonthehorizonpresagingthestormofwar. Worseeventhanthefearof thescourgeofwarofman againstmanisthefearofwar ofmanaganstGod.Irreligion, indifferencetoreligion,hatred ofreligionfosteredbyAtheistic Communismandnee-paganism, mergewiththefearofwarto makeheavytheheartsofmen whoknowthatonlyinthepeace ofChristcantheworldfind peace.InhisveryfirstbroadcasttotheworldafterhisaccessiontothethroneofSt. Peter,inMarch,1939,PiusXII. prayedfortheestablishmentof peace,whichhecalled"the sublimegiftofheaven,thefruit ofcharityandjustice."Thesewordsexpress,Ibelieve,the soulofhispontificate. WedonotknowwhatGod hasinstoreforusandforthe world.Nomancansearchthe mindofGod,andHeelectsas HewillsthevisibleHeadofthe Church.PiusXII.waschosen evenasPetertheFisherman waschosen-bytheWillofGod, notbythewillofmen.Yet,as faraswecansearchthedispen- sationsofDivineProvidence, Godrulesneithertheworldnor HisChurchbymiraculousdispensations.Heworksinhuman waystoseekendsthatareDivine.Hehasmademen-not angels-thedispensersofHis mysteries.
ChristmighthavevestedHis Vicaronearthwiththepower whichHeusedwhenHisenemies,comingtocrucifyHim, werestrickenandfelltothe ground.Toallinthelineof Peter,hemighthavegiventhe commandoftwelvelegionsof angels.Hedidnoneofthese things.ButHegavetoHis Vicarauthoritytoteachevenas Hetaught-infallibly.PiusXII, athemanlikeourselves,governs flockofChrist,guardsit againstitsenemies,leadsitto
runningwatersingreenpas- tures,withtheauthoritygiven himalonebytheGreatShep- herdoftheFlock,whoisChrist theLord,theTeacherandSaviourofmankind. ThemanwhoisPiusXII.possessesuniquenaturalgifts.He hasseenmeninmanylands.He hasstoodbeforerulerstopre- sentthecounselsandadmonitionsoftheVicarofChrist.He hasstudiedthehumanheart,andknowsitscapabilitiesas wellasitsweaknesses.We canbehumblygratefulthat fromhisyouthupwardsPius XII.respondedto,thedispensa- tionsofProvidence,hidden thoughtheywerefromhis mind,sothatwhenhecameto theThroneoftheFisherman nearlyelevenyearsago,hecame notonlyasamanwhohad walkedhumblywithGodinall hisdays,butalsoendowedwith thequalitiesofmindandheart whichmakehimaleaderof men.Buthisessentialauthorityisapartfromtheseaccomplishments-andabovethem.
WedonotknowwhatGod hasinstoreforusandforthe world,butwedoknowthatat ourheadisChrist'sinfallibleVicar-thetwohundredand sixty-secondinthelineofPontiffs LinusbeginningwithPeterand andCletusandClement. WethankGodforhispiety-hehasshownhimselftobethe PastorAngelicusoftheprop- hecy-forhiswisdom,forhis indomitablecourage.Fromthe knowledgethatthegatesofhell canattackbutneverovercome theChurch,wedrawcourage. Accordingtothisprincipleitis permittedforagoodreasonto dosomething,whichisnot wronginitself,butwhichmay resultinthedeathofaninnocentpersonasasecondary effect.Rememberthatdeath mustnotbeinitselfthecause ofthecure.Thus,ifamother isinseriousdangerofdeath, shemaysubmittotreatment necessaryforherrecoveryand directlyconducingtoit,even if,atthesametimetheunborn childdies,providedthatthis unfortunateevileffectisnotthe causeofthemother'srecovery, isnotintended,andprovided thatitisguardedagainstas faraspossible,andthatnothing isdonetoinduceitdirectly.
Thesecondcaseisthatofthe persondyingofanincurable andpainfuldisease.Itisstill wrongaccordingtoNatural andDivineLawdirectlyand intentionallytodestroythelife ofaninnocentperson,nomatterwhatseemingadvantagemay begainedbysodoing.Thefact thatthepersonhappenstobe veryold,orinsane,orsuffering fromanincurablediseasedoes notchangethefactthattokill himismurder.Ofcourse,nowadaysitiscalledmercy-killingoreuthanasia.Perhapsthis moderndislikeforcallinga spadeaspadehassomethingto dcwiththedislikeforclear thinkingfromwhichmanyof ourcontemporariessuffer.
Whatadvocatesofeuthanahia seemtooverlookisthathuman lifeisheldintrustfromGodas agift,inasense,God'sgreatest gifttoman.Godalonehasdominionoverlifeanddeathand wehaveHiscommandnever directlytodestroythelifeofan innocentperson.Theconsentof thepersonconcerneddoesnot makethedestructionoflifeany lessaviolationofGod'slaw. Forthem,too,theHolYYearmustbetheoccasionofthe "greatreturnandthegreatpardon."FortheChristianlife istobehadonlybythoseinwhosesoulssanctifyinggrace dwellshabitually.
HencethereislaidupontheshouldersofeveryCatholicandofeveryChristianthesolemndutyoffirstlyrenewinginhimselfthefulnessofChristand,secondly,ofspreadingthecontagionofChrist'sspiritinthemilieuofhisdaily life.Itmustsadlybeconfessedthatmanyareto-day atheists,agnosticsorindifferenttoreligionbecauseofthe badexampleofprofessingChristians.Nothing,certainly, tendssomuchtodiscredittheChristianFaithintheeyesof thenon-believerandtheweakinspiritasseriousdiscrepanciesbetweenbeliefandconduct.Inthisrespect,weare allatfaultinvaryingdegrees,andaspiritofreparation aloneshouldimpelustorepairthepastinthepresentand inthefuture.Forthisfullandgenuineconversionof heart,notimecouldbemoreopportunethantheHolyYear, whentheChurchunlocksthetreasuryofHeavenandGod's graceisloosedupontheworldwithsuchprodigality.

Completedetailsofaproposal forrebuildingtheBasilicaofthe HolySepulchreinJerusalemaccordingtoitsfourth-century, architecturalformareexpected tobeavailabletothepublicby theendofFebruary.Anew bookgivingthesedetailsisexpectedoffthepressbythen.
Itcallsforacruciformchurch toreplacethepresentstructure,whichhasbeendamagedthrough its800yearsofexistenceby earthquakesandfireandhas beendisfiguredbyunworthy construction.Architecturally,the bookproposesareturntothe churchbuiltinthefourthcent-. urybySt.Helena,motherof ConstantinetheGreat.Itwas thenknownastheChurchofthe Resurrection.
Theplansinthebookare proposedbytheFranciscanCustodyoftheHolyLand.The bookiscalled,"TheHolySepulchreofJerusalem,ItsGlories,MisfortunesandHopes".
WrittenpartlyinItalianand partlyinFrench,thevolume,is dedicatedtoHisHolinessPope PiusXIIasthe"Defenderofthe HolyPlaces."ItcarrieraforewordbyArchbishopGustavo Testa,ApostolicDelegatetoPalestine,whoforthelastdecade hasactivelyinterestedhimselfin theprojectofrebuildingthebasilica.
Thebookcallsforacentral edificesurroundingtheSaviour'stombatwhichallcan prayandworship.Theedifice wouldbeerectedoverthetomb butnotoverthenearbysiteof Calvary,asisthecaseatpresent.Accordingtothenewplan, Calvarywouldbemarkedbya separatechapeleastofthe church.
Theproposalprovidesforseparatechapelsforthethreereligiousgroupsnowenjoyinga
righttoservicesatthesiteof thetomb:Catholics,GreekOrthodoxandArmenianOrthodox. Accordingtothebook,these groupsalonewouldcontinueto haveservicesatthetombandto shareinthescheduleofhours there.Thesechapelswouldencirclethenewchurchandhave passagewaysconnectingthem withit.Therewouldalsobe chapelsfortheSyrianOrthodox, CopticOrthodoxandAbyssinian Orthodoxfaithswhonowenjoy minorrightsintheBasilica.
Theplanwouldfurtherallot achapeltotheAnglicanChurch, asarepresentativeofthe Protestantbodies,whichatpresenthavenorightsintheshrine. TheLutheranChurchofthe Redeemernearbywouldbe broughtintotheoverallexterior schemebyallotingitaspecial passagewaytothenewbasilica.
Thisproposal,itwaspointed out,isbeingmadetoHisHolinessPopePiusXIIduringthe eighthcentennialyearofthe consecrationoftheBasilicaof theCrusaders.TheVatican,it wassaid,welcomesthisplanto surroundwithmorerespectthe holiestofshrines,tofoster peacefulrelationsamongreligiousbodiesflayingrightsthere, andtopermitotherchurchesto havetheirownchapelsforworshipneartheLord'ssepulcher.
