TheHolyFatherthenascended toathronepreparedforhimon theportico.Hiseyeswereclosed, hislipsmovedinprayer,asthe SistineChapelChoirchanted. Whenallwasinreadiness,the SovereignPontiffroseandwent totheHolyDoorwherehereceivedfromthehandsofHis EminenkeNicolaCardinalCanali,thePenitentiary,abeautiful hammer whichofivory,silverandgold. restedonagoldtray.

IntheChapeloftheBlessed Sacrament,fromwhichtheSacramenthadbeenpreviouslyremoved.,HisHolinesmetmembers oftheConfraternitieschargedwithguardingtheHolyDoor throughouttheyear.

TheHolyFathernextvisited theBlessedSacramentreserved intheChapelofSt.Petronilla, andwasthencarriedonthe ediagestatoriatothemain altar,whichheascended.There theconditionsforgainingtheHolyYearindulgenceswereread, followingwhichtheHolyFather gavehisblessingtothethrong ofsome30,000pilgrimswhohad

beenwaitinginsidetheBasilica sinceshortlyafter8o'clockthis morning.

EXPIATION

Aftergivinghisblessing,the SupremePontiffleftimmediately.Hewascarriedonthesedia gestatoriatotheChapelofthe Pieta,whereheenteredtheelevatorthatreturnedhimtothe Papalapartments.

Romehadbecometheworld, andtheworldRome,whenfollowingthecommandoftheHoly Father,"OpentoMethedoors ofjustice..,openthedoor,for Godiswithus,"theHolyDoor was.takendoerandslowly drawnawayonasmallcart.

Isawtheceremonyfromthe pressgallery,overlookingthe PapalthroneandtheHolyDoor, Stirringinitssplendourandmovinginitssimplicity,theancientriteunfoldedwithoutaflaw accordingtothetraditional schedule.

AllbellsofRomewereringing astheprocessionmovedintothe vastPortico.TheSwissGuards intheirmedievaluniforms,Papalgendarmeswithdrawn swordsandchamberlainswith white,ruffledcollarsguided priests,Religious,membersof thePapalhousehold,abbots,bishopsandCardinalstotheir seatsinthetribunesontheportico. Silvertrumpetssoundedasthe HolyFatherwascarriedonto tkesceneonthesediagestatoria underacanopy.Hewasflanked bytwobearersofthePapalflabelli(ostrich-plumedfans).Msgr. GeorgeJ.Biskup,apriestofthe ArchdioceseofDubuqueattached totheSacredOrientalCongregationinRome,carriedoneofthe fans.

THREEBLOWS'

TheHolyFatherthenascended toathronepreparedforhimon theportico.Hiseyeswereclosed, hislipsmovedinprayer,asthe SistineChapelChoirchanted. Whenallwasinreadiness,the SovereignPontiffroseandwent totheHolyDoorwherehereceivedfromthehandsofHis EminenkeNicolaCardinalCanali,thePenitentiary,abeautiful hammerofivory,silverandgold, whichrestedonagoldtray.

Inamatterofafewmoments theHolyFatherrecitedthree shortversiclesalternatingwith thethreeceremonialblowsof thehammeragainsttheHoly Dooronaspotmarkedbya smallgold-colouredGreekcross Theblowswereslightbutaudible.Followingthethirdblow HisHolinessreturnedtothe Throne.Whenhewasseated, MonsignorEnricoDante,master ofceremonies,pressedabutton nearthethrone,signallingtothe Sampietrini(Vatic*Cityworkmen)insidetheBasilica.The door,themasonryaroundwhich hadbeenpreviouslyloosened, wasloweredbackwardsintothe interioroftheBasilicabyrives andpulleys,anddrawnaway immediately.Otherssweptthe dustandtheloosenedbricks awayfromthedoorway.

TEDEUM Amomentlater,thepenitent- iariesofSt.Peter'sbeganthe symbolicWashingoftheHoly Doorframeandthresholdwith spongesdippedinHolyWater.

Nextalongredcarpetwas spreadintotheBasilica,anda cushionwasplacedataspot wheretheHolyFatherwasled tokneel.HisHolinessintoned theTeDeum,holdingalighted candleinhislefthandanda gold-platedprocessionalCrossin hisrighthand.Afterthefirst stanzaoftheTeDeum,HisHolinessaroseandenteredtheBasilica,accompaniedbythosein immediateattendance.Hewas followedbytheCardinals,Bishops,diplomats,andotherdignitaries.

IntheChapeloftheBlessed Sacrament,fromwhichtheSacramenthadbeenpreviouslyremoved,,HisHolinesmetmembers oftheConfraternitiescharged withguardingtheHolyDoor throughouttheyear.

TheHolyFathernextvisited theBlessedSacramentreserved intheChapelofSt.Petronilla, andwasthencarriedonthe sediagestatoriatothemain altar,whichheascended.There theconditionsforgainingthe HolyYearindulgenceswereread, followingwhichtheHolyFather gavehisblessingtothethrong ofsome30,000pilgrimswhohad

beenwaitinginsidetheBasilica sinceshortlyafter8o'clockthis morning.

Aftergivinghisblessing,the SupremePontiffleftimmediately.Hewascarriedonthesedia gestatoriatotheChapelofthe Pieta,whereheenteredtheelevatorthatreturnedhimtothe Papalapartments.

Atmid-dayHisGrace,the Archbishop,theMonsignoriand about70priestswereentertainedatluncheonbytheCommunity.Attheendofthemeal, HisGrace,addressingthosepresent,congratulatedtheSisters ontheirGoldenJubileeinthe West.HisGracepaidaglowingtributetothePresentation Sistersonthemagnificenteducationaledificetheyhaveerectedsince1900,andexpressedthe hopethattheOrderwouldextendandprosperandbetherecipientofsignalfavoursfrom Godintheyearstocome.

Intheyear1728therewas bornnearMallow,CountyCork, SouthernIreland,achildwho wasdestinedtoberanked amongsttheforemostofIreland'snoblesfdaughters.Nano Nagle,forsuchwasthechild's name,grewupintherefinedatmosphereofaCatholichome. Shewasdescendedfromoneof thoseancientCatholicfamilies thathadsurvivedhundredsof yearsofpersecutionandsuffering.TheGovernmentof thedayhadclosedallCatholic schoolsinherland-theselfsameGovernmentconsideringit asacreddutytodestroyevery vestigeoftheCatholicreligionthosewhocouldafforditsent theirchildrenacrosstoFrance,

inallitsfullnessforChrist.The awakeningcametoheronegrey morningwhenreturningfroma ballintheearlyhoursshesaw acrowdofpoorpeopleeagerly pressingintoaChurchinParis forHolyMass.Thecontrast ofherfrivolouslife-already shewasbeginningtofeelthe voidofitsunreality-withthe fervourandrealityofthis morning'sscenetouchedand convertedher."TheyareseekingtheOneThingnecessary. WhatamIdoing?"Theanswerechoedinthedepthsofher soul;thevoiceofGodhadspoken,andNanoNagle,inher twenty-secondyear,castoffthe spiritoftheworldandwasinwardlyclothedinthespiritof JesusChrist.ReturningtoIreland,Religion,shefelt,wasthe onlyoutletforthenewdesires thatwerebeingbornwithinher. greatportionoftheearth'ssurfacehasbecomehersphereof action.InherlifetimeCatholicitycameoutfromitshiddenplacesinIreland.Through herinfluenceitspreadthroughoutIrishhomes.Outfromthe coastsofIreland,likethepilgrimsaintsofoldherdevoted followershavegoneforthto teachitthroughouttheearth's fivecontinents.Inallthese placesthespiritofNanoNagle stilllives.Thevisionthatwas hersisstillthere.Onher numerouscommunities,ason thethousandsofchildrenbeing taughtbyherspiritualdaughters,shestillshedsherblessings.Wouldthattheworldin itsonwardrushwouldstopand contemplatewithamazement thepowerandspiritualwealth thatasinglewomanhaspoured intothesoulsandmindsnot onlyofherownraceacrossthe seas,butintothelivesoflegions inmanylands.Herworkis lastingbecauseitwasbased uponprayer,oppositionandsacrifice.Herworkisenduring becauseitborethehallmarkof theCross,butherworkgrew andkeptgrowingwithapro- videntialgrowth,despitethe longtragiclitanyofbloodand sword,eviction,massacreand imprisonment.

To-dayweassembletohonourtheSistersofthePresentationOrderintheirbeautiful Jubileecelebrations,andoffer themourcongratulations.Since theircomingtoAustraliajust eighty-fouryearsago,the Orderhasmadeaprogressthat hastrulymiraculous.To-day theyhavemorethaneightyfourfoundationsinthevarious States,overeighthundrednuns teachingoverfifteenthousand children.

Inthehistoricgoldrushof theNinetiesinWesternAustralia,BishopGibneywassorely perplexedbythesuddenrisein theCatholicpopulation.He appealedfarandwideforreligiousteacherstocometohis aid.FivePresentationSisters fromNewSouthWalesvolunteeredundertheleadershipof thesaintlyreligious,Mother AngelaTreacy.Twoofthese foundationSistersarewithus to-day,MotherMaryPaul O'HalloranandMotherMary ColumbaMoynihan.Forfifty yearstheyhavelabouredzealouslyandwellinthisportion oftheMaster'sVineyard.To thesetwovenerablepioneerswe offerspecialcongratulationsand prayGodtogivethemabig shareintheseJubileegraces.

Ifwerepliedthatyoushootahorsewithabrokenlegand thatyououghttotreatatablelikewise,theywouldatonce exclaimtriumphantly:"Butthecaseisquitedifferent;there isnoproperanalogybetweenthenatureofalivingorganismandoneinanimate."Yetthegapbetweentheanimate andtheinanimateisnotsocompletelyhopelessasthechasm whichyawnsbetweenthebrutecreationandthenatureof man,theanimalmadeintheimageofGod.Asaneman cannotevenbegintomakeananalogybetweenthem.Yet thecultofthenewmurderdoessowithoutintellectualreproach.Theideaofenthanasiaisnotlessrepulsivethan theotheranti-Christianaimsofhumanitarianism.Like themitwearsthehypocriticalmaskofkindness,whichis reallysoftness,andofconcernforbodilysuffering,while itcomplacentlyignorestheterriblemoralevilassociated withtheseideas.

Theirlanguagebetraysthemmostcompletely.They speakofthe"right"todiebyone'sownhand,oratthe handsofothersbyone'sconsent.And,again,of"service," withoutanyhonestattempttodiscoverwhomtheyshould serve,forwhatreasons,andbywhatmethods.Before onespeaksofone's"right"todie,oneshouldbeclearonthe moreprimaryquestionofbywhatrightonelives.Aman doesnotlivebyhisownright,norbythatofhisparents. LifeisthegratuitousgiftofGod,andwhateverrightsare propertoournaturehavebeengivenalongwiththegiftoflife. Buttoepositionofmanisnotthatofowner,butoftrustee.He mustusehisrightstoprosecutetheendofhiscreation,revealed byGodandworkedoutinelaboratedetailbyaDivineteacher -theCatholicChurchinHertheology.Itiscertainlyavery exceptionalcasewhereoneisjustifiedbyCatholictheologyin takingone'sownlife,andmostassuredlythisisneversointhe formthatiscalled"euthanasia".Thetalkabout"service",on theotherhand,arisesfromanalmostincredibleignoranceof themoststrikingChristianDoctrine,-thatoftheCross.Only apagancanregardphysicalpainasanevilinarealsense. Christ'sownsacrificeonCalvary,HisMother'sdolours,andthe legacyofpainwhichhasbeenforthesaintsoneoftheprincipal steppingstonestoheroicsanctity-thesearetheessenceof Christ'steachingandexample,andthemostobviousfactsin Christianhistory.

Whyhavetheybeendisregarded?Becauseofaweakand sicklyliecalled"humanitarianism",whichpropoundsthe monstrousdoctrinethatmanexistsprimarilytoserveman. HandinglovewiththiS,hasappearedtheother,andnoless perverteddoctrinethatmanisonlyananimal,-allbeitthe highestinthescale.Thereisnoreasonwhymanshouldhelp hisfellowmanexcepttheybebrothersoftheoneFather.In thatcaseaman'sfirstdutyistotheFather,theGiveroflife andtheProviderofallgoodandnecessarygifts.Ashit.man beingmerelyofananimalnaturethisignoresthewholegreat barrierofmentalandspiritualgifts,thesenseofshameandof laughter,andtheinnumerableotherthingswhichsoclearly markmanastheimageofGodandalonemakehumanhistory intelligible.Euthanasiaissimplyaeuphemismformurder ofthesick,theoldandtheoutcast,anddemonstrateshowvery crudeisthekindnessofthehumanitariansincontrasttothe realworksofcharityandmercyestablishedandmaintainedby theCatholicChurch.

TheParty,therefore,isabsolutelyessentialtoaCommunist,andtheleadersofthe Partymerelyguidethismovement.But,consequently,fora Communist,loyaltytotheParty issomethingsacrosanct,and whatevermilitatesagainstthe interestofthePartyisofSatan.

Inotherwords,hesimplydoes not.regardanybodyoutsidethe Partyashavinganyrightswhatever;theyareoutsidethehistoric movement,eitherasdecadent bourgeoisintellectualswhomerelytakeanacademicinterestin theirdesire,ortheyareoutside themovement,becausetheyare itsenemies.Andasthereisno suchpersonasGod:(theyare purelymaterialisti)-anything thatistheenemyoftheParty, musthewipedout.Moralityis basedsolelyontheinterestsof theproletariat.

MAKINGTHE WELKINRING

Howcoulditbeotherwise?

Andforthisreason,itisawaste oftimemakingthewelkinring withdenunciationofRedjustice. asinthetrialsofpriests,etc. Youareanenemy,becausevou areoutsidetheParty.Youare eitheranenemythatcanbe despised,ornot;andifyouare nottobedespised,thenthey destroyyou.Andinthesame waytheyregardmoralsandrevolutionasabsolutelyidentical andinterchangeableterms.If youarearevolutionary,youare amoralman.Rightandwrong

haveabsolutelynomeaningat allintheirconcept.If,there-1 fore,youstrikeaCommunist, thenitiswicked;ifhedoesthe sametoyou,itisanobledeed. But,yousay,why?Becauseto touchthePartyistoopposethe Proletariat-andthatisfora ('ommunist,alwaysgrosslyimmoral.

AndfinallyforaCommunist, ashumanactivityonlyreaches itspeakpointandcanonlybe properlyunderstoodinasocial form,itfollows(doesitnot?) thattherightsofanindividual justdonotmeanathing.Itis onlyinsofarasthereissocial activitythatyoucanexpressthe highestpointofrea,lity.Consequently,manexistsforsociety, andnotsocietyforman.

THEDIAGNOSIS

WellnowthatasIseeit,is thesortofinsideset-upofthe Communistmovement;itis somethingthattheymaynotbe abletoanalyseasIhave,just assometimesaCatholicwould behardputtoittoanalysewhat Catholicismmeans.Butyou see.Iknowsomanyofthem. Ihavelivedandworkedwith them.ItissomethingIhave seeninmylife-andthatismy diagnosis,asfarasIcanjudge theMovement. Obviouslyitwon'ttakeyou longtoseewhatafrightfulcontrastthereisbetweenthisand Catholicism.Catholicism,of course,isfullyawareofthefact thatnomancanexpresshispersonalityproperlyexceptin society.Inourdayandtime, too,weinourreligiouslifehave emphasised-whatwasprobably overlookedbyourimmediate predecessors-thatreligionisa socialthing,thatwecannotjust simplyliveourpunylittlepious livesapartfromthegreatlifeof ChristintheMysticalBodythatwehavegottobecome consciousofthefactthatweare partofthisgreatfamily;thislife

ofwhosefullnesswehaveall receivedpulsatesandchtfulates througheverymemberofthe MysticalBodyofChrist,Yes! ButtheCatholicalsobelievesin thegrandeuranddignityof theindividual;Catholicismwill nevertoleratethephilosophyof theMarxist,wherebywehaveno personalintegrity.

INEVITABLECONFLICT

IfwearepartoftheMystical BodyofChrist,wearealso separateimmortalsouls,eachone ofusstampedwiththeimageof God,eachoneofuscalledtoa supremeandgloriousdestinyin heaven;and,consequently,each oneofushasrights.Andsociety mustexisttoprotectthose rights;wearenotgoingtobe justpartofaninchoatemass. Therefore,thereisaninevitable conflictbetweenCatholicismand Communism.Thedignityofthe humansoul,andthevalueofthe humanpersonalityisacceptedby us,andrejectedbythem.

Again,becausewebelievein theexistenceofGodasMaster andSupremerulerofmanand society,weareobviouslypeople withaninflexiblelawofright andwrong,FortheCommunist whatisrightto-dayiswrong to-morrow,accordingasitaffects theinterestsoftheproletariat.

Itisnotmerelythatthisisan immoralprinciple-itisalsodisgustingly.stupid,andshockingly disastrousforhumanity-for wherethereisnosupremelawgiver,whoistoproceedwiththe businessoftheso-calledState?

"State,"thatisaword;whatis theStateinpractice?TheState, inpractice,isaStalin,aMolotov.aVishinsky,aCommissar,achiefofaconcentration camp!

AndtheChurchhassufficient knowledgeofthewickednessof thehumanhearttoknowthat althoughitmayhavebeencreatedintheimageandlikenessof God,itcaneasilybecomethe imageandlikenessofSatan;and sotheremustbealawwhich governsnotmerelvSocietybut thosewhogovernSociety.

INEVITABLECONFLICT
