TheHolyFatherstronglyurgedalldissidentstoreturntothe Church,describinghisappealasthatofa"Fatherwholoves, toils,suffers,praysandhopesforthegoodandhappinessofall children."

HealsodeclaredthattheHolyYearof1950mustbedoubly decisive-"decisiveespeciallyforthelonged-forreligiousrenewalofthemodernworld,"and"decisiveaswellforthefuture oftheChurch."

These"sentimentsofOurheart"wererevealedbytheHoly FatherinhisannualChristmasmessagedeliveredfromhis throneinthepresenceoftheRomanCardinals.

Dr.KarlGerstenmaier,distinguishedProtestantleaderand HighCommissionerforRefugees,saidthatDr.Niemoeller wasnotauthorisedtospeakin behalfofalltheProtestants,and muchlessinthenameofall Germans.

Inanycase,Dr.Gerstenmaier feltthatDr.Niemoeller'sviews didnotreflectthoseoftheoverwhelmingmajorityoftheGermans,especiallyastothelat-

ter'sopinionthattheywould preferaunifiedGermanyunder Communistruletothepresent setup. Dr.Niemoelleraddedinthe pressinterviewthatGerman Protestantismhad"lostabattle whentheEastwaslosttoCatholicPoland,"butfailedtoexplainthemeaninglOofsocontradictoryastatement.HetermedtheBonnGovernment"a childborninWashingtonand blessedbytheVatican,"utterly disregardingthefactthatthe PresidentofWestGermany,Dr. TheodorHeuss,isaProtestant, theMinisteroftheInteriora distinguishedLutheranleader, andthatnumerousmembers bothoftheCabinetandthepar- liamentarychambersbelongto Protestantdenominations.

VATICANCITY,Jan.2.-Usingsixlanguageswithastonishingease,HisHolinessPopePiusXII.addressedsome2,000 pilgrimsfrommanydifferentcountriesintheHalloftheBenedictionsinSt.Peter'sBasilica,NewYear'smorning,beforeof-feringMassforthem. HisHolinessspokeinItalian,English,French,German, SpanishandPortuguese,inthatorder.

TheHolyFatherwelcomedthe pilgrimstotheHolyCity,praisedtheirspiritofsacrifice,and blessedthemandtheirfamilies,thesickandtheircountries. IntheGerman-languagemessage,thePontiffemphasised stronglytheideaofpeaceand reconciliationasinseparable fromtheHolyYear,urginghis auditorstodismisstheideaof revenge.

Itwasinspiringtowatchthe pilgrimsofwidelyseparated countriesjoininacclaimingthe HolyFatherinthetraditional fashionashewascarriedinto andoutofthehall,thewhile bestowinghisblessinguponthe largecongregation.

LONDON,Dec.22,-After travellingthousandsofmiles throughRussia,Europeandthe MiddleEast,apictureofOur Lady,paintedinaRussianprisoncampearlyinthewar,now hangsinachapelinBrompton Oratory,inLondon'sWestEnd.

Thestoryofthepicturebegins in1940intheKoielskprisoncamp nearSmolensk,oneofseveralfor

amongthempaintedacopyofa picturewidelyknownineastern Poland.

Thepicturewascarefully guardedbytheprisoners,but finallytheyweredispersed.'Some went-offtoforcedlabor.Others weremovedtootherprisoncamps andsomeeventuallybecame victimsoftheKatynmassacreof Polishwarprisoners.

GENOA,Dec.28.-Continuing reportsfromYugoslaviaconcerningthepersecutionofCatholicpriestshavebeenclimaxedwiththenewsthattheRev. AntonCulehasbeenarrestedby Communistpolice.HewasarrestedtwoweeksagointheparishchurchnearMostar.

FatherCule'sarrestrecallsthe fateofhistwobrothers.BishopPeterCule,ofMostar,was condemnedbyaPeople'sCourt inJuly,1948,andsentencedto elevenyearsinprison.Hewas chargedwithcollaborationwith occupyingforcesandwithworkingagainsttheYugoslavGovernment.Anotherbrother,a layman,wasmurderedbyCom- munistpartisansin1945,becausehewasaBishop'sbrother.

Observershereemphasisethat theincreasingnumberofpriests arrestedandcondemnedbythe YugoslavCommunistsisclear proofthattherehasbeennoletupinthepersecutionofthe. ChurchinYugoslavia.Under coverofthedailypropaganda aboutconciliationbetween ChurchandState,theCommunistsaregoinginexorablyforwardwiththeirundercover campaigntoexterminatethe Churchinthatcountry.

ManypeopleinYugoslavia, closetothesituation,reportthat oneoftheunusualfeaturesof thispersecutionistheattitude oftheAmericannewsmen.It hasbeenreferred'toasthe "complaisantco-operation"of thesenewsmen,whotheysay studiouslyrefrainfromally mentionofthepersecution.

Mr.JohnMuskwasaScotchman,whopossessedallthevirile andbusinessshrewdnessofhis race.Theiruprightnessand probitygainedfortheMusk familytherespectandesteemof allwithwhomtheycameincontact.Afterherhusband'sdemisemanyyearsago,Mrs.Musk presentedtotheChristianBrothersherBiiicloonestateforthe educationandtrainingoforphanboys.Theschool,with itsworkshops,'whichweresubsequentlyestablishedontheproperty,accommodateatpresent someseventyboys(ofelevento sixteenyears)fromGreatBritainandNorthernIreland,practicallyallofwhomlosthomes andparentsasaresultofthe war.Intheinterveningyears Mrs.Muskwatchedwithloving

Mrs.Muskwasanornament totheCatholicChurch,ofwhich shewasadevotedmember.She hadbeeninfailinghealthfor sometime,andasafittingclose toagrandlifeofservice,kindnessandbeneficence-forCharityistheQueenofVirtues-she passedawaypeacefullyather homeasshewasonthepointof settingouttoattendmorning MassonSaturday,26th,November,1949. Herobsequieswereattended byalargeassemblageofpeople inChurchandState,aswellas byrepresentativesofthevariouschildren'ssocietieswhich owesomuchtoherlife-long solicitudeandpatronage.The StatewilllongmournandrememberMrs.Muskasaloyal andmodelcitizen.

RequiemMasswasfirstcelebratedinthechapelofSt.Joseph'sFarmandTradesSchool, Bindoon,whichshehadsogenerouslydonatedandendowed. ThemusicoftheMasswasrenderedbytheorphanandmigrant boys,whosegreatbenefactress shewas. Brothers,boysandtheChaplainfromBindoonwererepresentedattheRequieminSt. Mary'sCathedral,Thedeceasedlady'stwosistersflewfrom Melbournetoattendtheobsequies. Maysherestinpeace.

Asthiswhirlingglobeturnsintothesecondhalfofa century,twoschoolsofthoughtproceedalongdivergent paths,neither,itistrue,unconsciousoftheother,Yet separatedbyagulfmoreabyssmalthaneventhatofsheer ignorance.Andsinceoneofthosepathsisheadedfordestructionassurelyasisamanidlytwistingatiger'stail,it wouldseemtobeadutyofeachofustoenquirewhetherit mightnotbefeasibletodissuadeitsfollowerswhileyetthere istime.

1950hasseenthefirstdaysoftheHolyYear;ithasalso seenthebeginningofthesecondlapoftheatomicera.The termlapisofalltermsthemostaptbecauseithas todowithracing,andthissecondlapistheatomicarmamentrace.TheU.S.madeanatombomb-theyhadto,you understand,becauseitwasrumouredthattheNaziswere tryingtomakeone.ThentheyuseditontheJapanesenot,ofcourse,thatitwasnecessary(theJapswerealready doomed,wehadbeenassured),buttoserveasafrightful warning.Thewarningdidnotpassunheeded-exceptby theAmericans.TheJapanesesurrendered-andhave sincebeenturningtothesourceoftruepeaceinawayremarkableforsobackwardapeople,ifwemayjudgefrom theenthusiasticreportsofmissionaries.TheRussianswere morepractical:theybuiltabomb.

Thattheywerewellabletodoithasbecomeincreasinglyclear.Thereisatendencyinallofustoexaggerate theimportanceanddifficultyofanyachievementofourown. Perhapsitwasthiswhichledatomicscientiststoscoutthe possibilityofaRussiansolutiontotheproblem.Atall events,itisnowcertainthattheRussianshadthesecret atleastasearlyastheU.S.-andnotfromstolendocuments, butfrombrilliantoriginalresearch.

NowtheUS.hasasuper-bomb;itsdestructivepower isincomprehensible,itssecretnotbeyondthegraspofany seriousstudentofphysics.Atpresenttheyarediscussing whetherornottoproduceitinquantitybutthedecisionis inevitable-they'llhaveto,becausetheRussiansaresureto dothesame.

Whatarewetothinkofallthis-we,thepotential guineapigsinexperimentalatomicdiplomacy?ThePope hasgivenustheanswer.Stern,implacable,asbefitsthe divinely-appointedFatherofmankind,hepointsoutthe waytohislargelyheedlesschildren."ReturntoGod,"he says"Liveinanhabitualstateofsanctifyinggrace;" "Prayanddopenance,thatthewrathofGodmaybe averted." Thatphilosophycanbesummedupinthisway.Allrealityis spirit,andthesolepurposeof liteisthedevelopmentorevolutionofspirit,calledbyHegel, "TheAbsoluteIdea",-byadialecticalprocessofcontradiction culminatingintheattainmentof totalTruth'inwhichSpirit,or theAbsoluteIdea,isfinally quiescent,andlife'sgoalattained.

Naturally,youwillask,"What inthenameofHeavendoesall thismean?"Tobequitehonest notevenHegelknew,andcertainlynobodyelsehasgotavery clearideaofit.ButIwillendeavourtoexplainitlikethis. Wheneveryoumakeastatement, thenobviously,bythesametoken,youassertthatcontradiction ofthatstatementisfalse.Ifyou say,"Thisobjectiswhite,"then obviouslyyouarealsosaying "thisobjectisnotblack."Now, accordingtoHegel,everyaffirmationisansweredbyacontradiction,asaresultofwhichisproducedasynthesis,asortofnew truthoutofwhichyougoforward afurtherstepuntil,atlast,Spirit restsinitselfinasortofintellectualNirvana,andlifeiscompletebeauty,peace,harmony.

NowMarxlookedatallthisand said,verysensibly,"Thissounds phoneytome!"Andsohewent theotherwayround,andturned Hegelupsidedown.Marxstarted offbysaying:"AllRealityisnot Spirit.MatteraloneisReality. Andconsequently.wehavenever togooutsidetherealmofmatter; everythingoutsideisjustwishful thinking,becauseyoufindyourselfatvariancewithmatter,and becauseyouareunabletodominatematter;becauseyouare unabletoharnessyourselfwith matter;andsoyoudreamyour dreams.

NowthatiswheretheMarxist slogan:"Religionistheopiumof thepeople,"comesin.Itwasnot, asMarxmeantit,agibe;itwas not(asverymanypeoplethink to-day)thatMarxsuggestedthat religionwasasortof"dope"that paidlackeysofthecapitalistsystem,likeme,tocomedownand tellthepeople:"Cheerup!I grantyou'veaprettyrottenhouse here,buttherearemanymansionsinthesky."

ThewholepointisthatMarx didnotmeanitlikethat.What Marxmeantwasthis:Allofusyouand1andeverymaninthe streetofcivilization-becausewe cannotsolvethecontradictions betweenourselvesandone another,becausewecannotestablishthatmasteryovertheworld inwhichwelive,becauselifein itspresentformdoefnotmake sense;insteadofhavingthecouragetofacethesituationanddoing whatthephilosopherofthe Marxistschoolwoulddo,and facetheinevitablewithstoic fortitude,weall-sosaidMarxhaveinventedaneternalworld.

"CONFLICTOFTHE CLASSES"

TheterriblefactthatRussiain incontrolofmostofChinaisnot theStateDepartment'sfault, saystheWhitePaper.Yet, thoughweblamedtheJapanese forPearlHarbour,wedidn't thereforeexculpateMessrs.KimmelandShort,whosebusinessit was,toseethatPearlHarbour didn'thappen.Mr.Achesonseems toholdthattheStateDepartmenthasnevermadeanyblunders,thatitseverymoveinthe Orientwaswise,farsighted,carefullyplanned.Whoistoblame forthedisaster,then?Hepoints anaccusingfingeratChiangKaishek,themanwhofortwenty-two yearshastried,andisstilltrying, tokeepRussiaoutofChina,Mr. AchesonevendefendsourbetrayalofChinaatYalta.His wholewihitewashofasupposedly AmericanpolicyNihichhaslogicallyresulted,asmanyAmericanslongagopredicted,indisaster forusandwhichhasbenefited onlySovietRussia,isatruly amazingfeat.

WithoneofMr.Acheson's statements.wecanheartilyagree: headmitsatlonglastthat"the communistleadershaveforesworn theirChineseheritageandhave publiclyannouncedtheirsubserviencetoaforeignPower,Russia." YetwewastedpreciousyearsbecauseourallegedChina"experts" saidthatacoalitionwasthesolutionforChina;thattheChineseRedsweren'treallyCommunists;thattheycouldbeweaned awayfromRussia;thatMaoTsetungwasanationalist,apotentialTito'whowouldwelconie ourloans,ourbusiness,ourindustrialknow-how.

Toshifttheblame,Mr. Achesonrepeatsadnauseamthe olddiatribesagainstChinese corruption:"TheKuomintang hadapparentlylostthecrusading spirit...Intheopinionofmany observerstheyhadsunkinto corruption,intoascramblefor placeandpower,andintorelianceontheUnitedStatestowin thewarforthem."Thefactthat newlyarrivedAmericanobservers foundcorruptionintheChinese GovernmentlefttheOldChina Handcold.Heknewbeforethese brightyoungmencame,asevery Chineseknew,thattherewas plentyofcorruptioninChiang's Government,asinpastChinese Governments,andintheChinese RedGovernment.Hedidnot denythefacts;hefacedthem, andwentonwithhiswork, knowingthatifhespentallhis timetryingtocleanupanother's mess,hewouldnevergethisown jobdone.

U.S.IMPERIALISTS

Ledbytheirchairman,Mrs. MaryAlfkin,the"parishinformationgroup"wasaidedbya dozenhighschoolboysandgirls toprepareposterscopiedfrom ChristianChristmascards,and thenappealedtothetown's145 merchantstotakepartina "CribintheShopWindowsof Reading"contest.Prizestotalling$25,willbeawardedafter January1tomerchantswhose displaysarejudgedbest.

Inafewweeks'timeschools throughouttheStatewillbe commencinganewyearof scholasticendeavour.Itismuch tobefearedthatonceagaintoo muchemphasiswillbeplaced onintellectualfeatsintheclassroom-abilitytopassexaminations,etc.-andnotnearly enoughattentiongiventoprogressinthebroaderfieldofeducation,wherethedevelopment ofthepotentialitiesoftheindividualshouldbetheall-importantconsideration.

Educationaltheoristshave longagorecognisedtheparamountimportanceoftheindividual,yetoursystemofmass educationissocumbersome,so poorlyprovidedforfinancially, andsofirmlytiedtothechariot wheelofexaminationsuccess, thatonecannotpossiblycontemplatewithequanimitythe dawningofyetanotherschool year.

Thereisthedanger,ofcourse, ofover-exaggeratingthepositionuntiloneisforcedintothe untenablehypothesisthatno goodcancomeoutofourschools anyhow.Thisisaperversion ofthetruth,andthosewho,in theirzealforreform,overlook theachievementgoftheschools inturningoutusefulcitizens aredoingthecauseofeducationalprogressagravedisservice.Hundredsofteachersin theschoolsareawareofthe limitationsinthetrainingthey areabletoprovide,andwould gladlyfollowaleadinaltering aset-upwithwhichtheyarenot whollyinaccord.Buttodamn outofhandtheirstrenuouseffortstoeducatetheyoungwould bethebestmethodofalienating theirsympathies-and,moreover,suchsweepingcondemnationwouldbeentirelyunjust. Therearemanyfeaturesofour educationalmethodwhichare worthpreserving.Itisbyno meanscertainthateventheexaminationsystemcanbesatisfactorilyreplaced,or,togofurther,thatitiswithoutintrinsic merit, Butunquestionablyitiswickedthatachild-anyandevery child-shouldspendtenofthe bestyearsofhislifeasmerely oneofaflockwhichwanders fromroomtoroompickingup whateverhecanontheway,

Take,forinstance,thecases oftwo,boyswhomweshalldesignateasAandB.Bothwere academicallyunsound.They wereinlowgradegroupsfor theirages.Ahadateacher whorecognisedthattheboyhad qualitiesofleadership,andhe entrustedtheboywithcertain littleresponsibilitieswhichwere faithfullyandeagerlydischarged.Againedconfidence,and, lookingroundtheschool,discoveredtherewasaclubwhich attractedhim.Heattached himselftotheclubandquickly rosetoapositionofeminence. Theprovisionoffacilities whichgobeyondtheboundsof ordinaryclasssubjectsisone importantsteptowardsbroader education.Onegreatdifficulty withalotofschoolswouldbe howtofitintheextraactivities; theschooldayisnotelastic.The onlysolutionwouldappearto lieinamodifiedcurriculum.
