WHATOURSCHOOLSPROVE.

ThesuccessesoftheCatholicschoolsintherecentUniversityExaminationsisanotherproofoftheefficiencyofthe educationalsystemintheArchdiocese.Yetinthissuccess weseebuttheleastimportantambitionofourDiocesan Schools,forasound,religioustrainingisthefirstandforemostobjective.Allotherconsiderationsaresubordinated tothatimportantprinciple.ItisafulfilmentoftheScripturalinjunction"SeekyefirsttheKingdomofGodandHis justice,andallthesethingswillbeaddeduntoyou."Itis verygratifying,then,tonotethatsuccesshascrownedthe effortsoftheteachersinthelesseraswellasthemoreimportantspheresoftheiractivity.

ThecourageousstandtakenbyCatholicstosafeguard theteachingofreligionineducationresultedoriginallyin theestablishmentofParochial,PrimaryandSecondary Schools.AftertheReformationtheChurchandStateno longerco-operatedinthematterofeducation.Themost seriousresultwastheseparationofmoralandreligious trainingfrompurelyintellectualeducation.NeitherState norHighSchoolscouldeverbeacceptable,aslongasthey persistedinapurelysecularsystem.ForCatholicsreligion istooseriousamattertobeseparatedfromeducation.Life herereceivesitshighestvaluebyservingasapreparation forthelifetocomeandanysystemofeducationwhich leavesoutofconsiderationtheultimatepurposeoflifeis vainanduseless. TheCatholicChurchhas,therefore,beenobligedtorejecttheGovernmentsystemonconscientiousgrounds,even thoughitmeantthelossofalltheadvantagesoffreeeducation.WithlittleornohelpfromtheStateithasbeenobligedtobuildandequipitsownschools,ratherthanforsaketheprinciplesofreligioustraining,uponwhichChristianityisfounded.Theresultisthateveryparishinthe Commonwealthhasitsownschoolssupportedentirelyby theCatholicpeople.Althoughreligionisrecognisedasthe besttrainingincitizenship,theStatehasneverrecognised religiousschoolsattheirtrueworth.Insomecountriesthe parochialschoolshavereceivedaidfromtheGovernment. butinsometheyaremaintainedbyvoluntarycontributions.

SuchisthecasewithAustralia.Thestruggleforreligiouseducationbeganattheverybeginningofourhistory. ThefirstschoolsopenedinSydneyweremaintainedby FatherTherrYandhisfaithfulfollowers.Sumsofmoney, inproportiontothenumberofschoolchildren,werepaid thevariousdenominations,andthisschemewaslaterextendedtoalltheStates.Butitdidnotlongcontinue.State aidwasgraduallywithdrawnfromalltheStates.including WesternAustralia,whichhashadtosupportitsownschools since1894.TheworkofthereligiousOrdersofmenand women,inthisrespect,cannotbeover-estimated.Itisnot toomuchtosaythat,withouttheirdevotedandself-sacrificingwork,suchaschemewouldbeimpossible.Thatthey havefaithfullycarriedouttheirtaskinthesphereofsecularwork,aswellasreligion,isbeyondquestion,andthe gratitudeofalltheCatholicsoftheStategoesouttothem intheirwell-meritedsuccess.AsCatholicshavealsoto paytheirshareoftaxesforthepublicschoolsystem,they arelabouringunderadoubleburden.Butthisonlyplaces inclearerlighttheirloyaltytotheprinciplesonwhichCatholicEducationisbased.

CommencingonMondaynext, January16,anexhibitionofpictorialphotographywillbeon viewinthePerthTownHall. Therewillbeabout150pictures displayed,quiteanumberof whichhavebeenacceptedand hungatInternationalSalonsin England,Belgium,India,and SouthAfrica. Thewholeoftheexhibitsare theworkoftwoPerthphotographers,MissJanKennedyand Mr.StuartGore,andthisisbelievedtobethefirstoccasionon whichasingle-handedexhibitionofthistypehasbeenattemptedbyWesternAustralians inthiscity,Admissiontothe displayisfree,andeverybodyis welcomedailyfrom10a.m.until 6p.m. Intheeveningstheexhibitors willscreenacompleteshowof theirwellknowndocumentary

Theworkers'movementwould inanycasehavebeenessential tohavetriedtograpplewith theseworketa'problems,tohave triedtodealwiththemandfind asolutionforthem.But,in pointoffact,asyouknow,the IndustrialRevolutionandall thatfolloweditwasnotbuiltup undertheinspirationoftheHoly Ghost,norwasitstaffedby saintsofGod.Itwasbuiltup withthedesireforgoldandgain; itwasbuiltupmainlyonthe pursuitofmaterialism,andnot onespiritualidealevercameinto it.Itwasstaffed,notbysaints, butinmanycasesbyfiendsincarnate;and,inothercases,by fools,blockheadswhowerequite incapableofseeingtwoinches beyondtheirnoses.

Fiendsincarnate,wickedmen, whoransackedtheworkhouses inordertobringlittlechildren toworkinthefactories,made themwork1Ihoursaday.They knewtheyweredoingevil. l'herewerealsothoughtlessmen andfoolswho,carriedawayby abstruseeconomic-,aboutlabour findingitsownlevel,cutwages dossistothehoneinopencompetition,paidnoheedtotheconditionsunderwhichworkers lived,allowedthemtogoon buildingupthefoetidslumsin whichIliveto-day.

One urgedoftheresolutionsadopted thatCatholicActionshould organizeaBrazilianassociation ofbusinessleaderswiththeaim ofmakingitadecisivefactorin theChristianizationofindustrial enterprise.Thedelegatesnotedthefollowingproblems:

(1)ThatBrazilisafflicted withthecommonabusesand faultsofunregulatedcapitalism,

ManyinEnglanddetestRussianCommunism,notbecauseit

Nearly35,000workersfromthe miningdistrictsoftheProvinces ofPalenciaandTeruelattended, withenthusiasmanddevotion, thespiritualmissionsorganized bythereligiousofficeoftrade unionorganizationsforthesedistricts.

In1927,FatherMuckermann foundedaworld-famedinstitute heredevotedtoresearchofthe problemsoffamilylife,especially eugenics.Whenthenazisattemptedtoenlistitsservicesforthe propagationoftheirideasofracialdiscrimination,FatherMuckermannrefused'toobeyand wasinstantlydismissed.Later, hewasforbiddentowriteunder hisownnameortodeliverpublic lectures.HewasrepeatedlyquestionedbytheGestapo,but,despitehisclosecontactswiththe anti-naziunderground,wasneverapprehended.WhentheRed ArmytookBerlin.hishomewas looted.

FatherMuckermannisnow72 yearsold.Hisbrother,theRev, FriedrichMuckermann,whoalso wasamemberoftheSocietyof Jesusandwaswidelyknownas aneditorandwither,hadto leaveGermanywhenthreatened nazipersecutionanddiedin Switterlandin1945.
