ThePresentationSistersare honouredbyhavingtheGolden Jubileeoftheirestablishmentin theArchdiocesehappilycoincidingwiththecelebrationofthe HolyYear.
Fiftyyearsago,asmallbut heroicbandoffivenuns,atthe invitationofBishopGibney,left Hay(foundationofMt.Erin, WaggaWagga,N.S.W.)tolabourinthethenalmostundevelopedfar-flungWest.Mother M.AngelaTreacey,thefirst Australianpostulanttoenterthe Mt.ErinCommunityin1877, wasSuperioress.Shehadfor hercommunity:MotherM.John (Jones);MotherM.Joseph (O'Dowling);SisterM.Paul (O'Haloran),andSisterM.Columba(Moynihan).
ThroughsomemisunderstandingtheydisembarkedatAlbany insteadofatFremantle,and wereobligedtotakethetrain through400milesofbushand desertduringtheintenseheatof Januarytotheirdestinationthe'GatetotheGoldfields," SouthernCross-whitherhundredswereflockinginseafchof gold.Thesewerethedays whenwireless,telephoneortelegrammessagswerelittleknown andpostalcommunicationwas slowanduncertain.Henceitis notsurprising(althoughitcertainlywastothewearytravellers)thattheirarrivalinSouthernCrosswasunexpectedand nopreparationhadbeenmade
theFaithintoreceptivehearts. However,SouthernCrosspassed intotheDioceseofNewNorcia, andtheSisterswererecalledin 1905bytheirbelovedBishop Gibneytolabourunderhisdirectjurisdiction.

"Thecomingofthenunsput newlifeintotheparish-they broughtwiththemthesuperior knowledgeandexperienceof school.Itwasapleasuretoobservetheexcellenttoneanddiscipline-orderlyandhappy underthematernalsuperintendanceoftheirteachers.This efficientworkofthePresentationNuns,perseveredinfor severalyears,musthavemadea lastingimpressiononthepupils whopassedundertheircarein thatremotegoldfields'town."
Collie:TheopeningofSt. Brigid'sConventSchoolinCollie,onthe2nd.August,1902, wasanimportantlandmarkfor theCatholicsofthedistrict.This wasthefirstCatholicschoolfor milesaround.Thethousands ofchildrenwhohavebeeneducatedbytheSistersforthepast 48yearsloveandadmirethe dawlhtersofNanoNagle,whohavelabouredsozeaoluslyand untiringlyamongthem.
Cottesloefollowedin1905. FatherRichardO'NeillwelcomedtheSisters,whotookup teachinginthe"StaroftheSea" Church.Nowabeautifully builtPrimarySchoolonthe StirlingHighwayhasensured thesuccessofthisprogressive centre,
"Iona":In1907abeautiful conventwasestablishedatCottesloeBeach,.nowknownas MosmanPark.ThisistheNovitiateandMotherHouseofthe Order,andaregisteredSecondarySchool.Situatedononeof thehighestpointsofthedistrict,itcanboastofanentrancingviewallround.Itsideal situationandsceniccharm promptedBishopGibneytocall it'Iona"-anameitcontinues proudlytobear.In1937alarge newwingtothisconventgave furtheraccommodationtothe Collegeforboarders,and1948 sawtheerectionofanewKindergartenHallandtWoadditionalclass-roomstoaccommodatethegreatincreaseofboth boardersanddaypupils.Plans forfurtherandgreaterextensionsinthenearfuturearein progress.

Theremarkableachievements atBoys'Town,Clontarf,have runtotheconstructionofacommodiousbrickstagewhichabuts onacourtyardforminganaturalopen-airauditorium.The effectisreminiscentofdrawings wehaveseenofthefamous GlobeTheatreinLondon,where Shakespeare'splayswereproduced350yearsago. ThispleasanttheatreatClontarfwasthevenuefortherecentannualconcertgivenby theboys.Thefunctionwaswell attended,manyhundredsof friendsandsympathisersjour- neyingbycarandbustocombineanevening'soutingwithaworkofcharity.
Atthecloseoftheconcert.Rev. FatherStinsonmadeashortaddress,inwhichheurgedincreasedsupportforallourCatholicinstitutions.Hepraised warmlytheheroicworkbeing donebytheBrothersandNuns throughouttheArchdiocese.He saidthat,whiletheGovernment wasrenderingsomeassistance, itwasnotyetenough;recogni- tionofthevaluetothecommunityofworksuchaswas beingperformedatClontarf oughttobemorewidespread. TheClontarfBoys'TownBand openedbothpartsoftheprogramme.TheNationalAnthem wasplayedatthecommencement,andtheAustralianAn- them("Advance Australia Fair")wassungbyeverybodyattheconclusionoftheentertainment.SomeofthemembersoftheBandwereheardin individualcontributions.

TheArchbishopwhoreminded thekingoftheconditionhehad laiddownbeforehisconsecration,hadalsobeggedforacounciltobecalledwhichmightreformabuses.Andhere,thoughon differentgrounds,thekingand theArchbishopagreed.The councilmetatRockingham, March,1095,Anselmdominating thegreatassemblyasheasked themhowwashetokeephisobediencetotheApostolicSeewithoutbreakinghisfaithtothe king.WilliamII.wasabusiveand cametothreatsinthehopeof shakingAnselm'sresolution;the Bishopsweretimidurginghim togiveuptotheking;Anselm stoodfirmwiththefullsupport ofthelaybaronsonhisside.The questionwasadjournedtoWhitsuntideandAnselmleftthecourt. SaysLingard:
"Therewassomethingludicrousintheresultofthe contest.ThekingsentclandestinelyamessengertoRome, ackowledgedwithoutsolicitationtheauthorityofUrban, privatelyprocuredforhimthe pallium,andafterseveral fruitlessattemptstosellit,at lastallowedittobegivento theArchbishop." Bari,October,1098,towhichhe wasinvitedtodefendthecreed oftheWestagainsttheEast,and inwhichthekingwasservedwithexcommuncation,thatAnselmfinishedhistreatise"Cur Deushomo"-abookprovingby logicalargument,setforthin dialogueform,theCatholic faith.Afterhisassistanceat theLateranCouncil,Easter, 1099, inwherethePopeplacedhim theplaceofhighesthonour, heworkedinthedioceseof Lyons,whencehewasrecalled toEnglandattheurgentrequest ofHenryandofthebarons, Henry'spositionwasinsecure asagainsthisbrother,Robertof Normandy,andheneededthe supportofAnselm.ThissupportthePrimategavewholeheartedlytotheextremeof threateningtheinvadingarmy withthesentenceofexcommunication.Andwhatnowhappenedthetraditionalambitionof theEnglishmonarchcanonly explain.Fallingbackuponthe "custom"ofhisfatherandbrother,HenryrequiredofAnselm tobeanewinvestedbyhimself.
