"Theprivilegeofthefreedom ofthepress,enhancedasitisby itsprominence'amongtheconstitutionallyguaranteedliberties, canbecomparedonlywiththe privilegeofparliamentaryimmunity,enjoyedbythosewho havebeenelectedbypopular votetothenationallegislative assembly.

InstructionshavealsobeenissuedonbehalfoftheGerman Hierarchythatflagsdisplayed onchurchesandchurch-owned buildingsbethoseoftheChurch only,andthattheybedisplayed onnonebutChurchholidays.

BERLIN,Nov.23.-His EminenceKonradCardinalvon Preysing,BishopofBerlin,has issuedaformalstatementtermingtheexterminationofmorethan fivemillionJewsbythenaziregime"acrimewithoutprecedent" andcallingontheGermanpeople totakeastandagainstracial hatred"whichstillisnotwholly extinct."

TOKYO,Dec.3(NC).-ReferringtotheproblemofJapan's excessivepopulation,theRev. W.A.Kaschmitter,directorof theCatholicToseinewsagency ofJapansayseditoriallythat "hungrynationsalsohavecertain rightstotheunusedresources thatliebeyondtheirownboundaries."

Thewriterrecalledthatin1919 thehistorianJamesJ.Walsh, predictedthatifpeacetreaty conditionsweremadesevere enoughforGermany,itwould becomethemostpowerfulnation intheworld.Healsorecalled thatin1930theAmericansociologist,Dr.WarrenS.Thompson urgedthatJapanbegivenmore landtoforestallawarinthePacific.TurningtotheoverpopulatedJapanoftoday,Father Kaschmitterthenwrites:

"They(theJapanese)are learningsomethingaboutgeography,andiftheyaretoldtheir onlyhopeliesinbirthcontrol, willtheynotthinkthatallour presenttalkaboutdemocracyand brotherhoodissheermockery?

Thecircushasanattraction allofitsown,andtheattraction beginsfromtheoutside.How cananyoneofthethousandsof peoplewhodailytraveltoand fromalongRiversideDrivefail tobeatleastmildlyinterested inthebizarresightofelephants, camels,andShetlandponies tetheredpeacefullybytheroadside?Thentherearethe wagons,thecaravans,thetents-allformingauniquespectacleredolentwiththeromanceof far-offcountries,andthrowing outanirresistiblechallengeto senseslongdulledbyconstant attunementtothehumdrum sensationsofmetropolitanlife.

Thecurrentshowbeganwith thetraditionalGrandParade, ledby sterstheRingmaster.Youngyelledwithdelight,and someoftheveryyoungshrank backincowedsilence,asthe horses,elephants,camels,weird clowns,andalltheparapherna- liaofthecircusmadeastately circuitofthedoublearena,close enoughforfront-seaterstoreach outatouchinghand.

Thehorseactwhichfollowed lackedthethrillofbarebackriding,tumbling,changingof mounts,etc.Butitwasarather aneatexerciseinpatternrid- ing,revealinggoodtraining.

Thelionswerenext,andthis wasapopularturn,Thebeasts lookedverysavage,frequently snarlingandclawingatthereduniformedlion-tamer,whoenteredthecageandputthem throughtheirpaceswith,theaid ofawhip.

Itwasnotablethattheuseof twoarenasallowedasmooth, swiftlychangingshow.One

CardinalMerrydelVal,who, from1907to1914wasEugenio Pacelli'schief,andwho,in1912, promotedhimtobeSecretaryof theCongregationofExtraordinaryEcclesiasticalAffairs,had beenveryclosetoLeoXIIIduringhislastyears,andaccepted thebreakwiththeLeoninetradition.Hencethecollaboration betweenmasterandhischief servitorwasperfect,andtheaccordbetweenthemlasted throughtheelevenyearsofthe PontificateofPiusX.

OneofLeoXIII.'sgreatest CardinalswascalledtotheSecretariateofState.Domenico Terrata,andwhenhedied,only amonthlater,BenedictXV.'s oldcolleaguesucceededhim, CardinalPietroGasparri,who hadbeenengagedforsometime indirectingthecodificationof CanonLaw,andoneofwhose busyexpertswasMgr.Pacelli.

ThedevotiontoBlessedMartin hasspreadandisspreadingby leapsandbounds.Itisaphenomenonofnationalpsychology thatAmericawhichshrinksfrom anythingwhichhasthenameof Negrotaintingit,hastakenthe humbleNegrosainttoitsheart. Theposerofsanctityisbenevolentlytyrannous.Wecannot helpbutbowourheadsinprofoundhumilitybeforeanymarvel ofsanctity.Youwillremember

ABOUNDINGCHARITY

Whatmannerofmanwas BlessedMartindePorresthathis nameshouldberinginground theworldwhereversanctityis revered?

BlessedMartinwinsbornin Lima,Peru,inSouthAmerica onDecember9th,1579inahut whichisnowenclosedbyalarger buildingandisconvertedinto,a chapel.HisfatherDonJuanue PorreswasaKnightofAlcantaraandaSpaniard,andhis mother,AnnaVelasquez,afreed colouredwomanfromPanama. Asachild,thoughinextreme povertyhimselfbeingpractically neglectedandevendisownedby hisfatherowingtohishaving takenincolourafterhismother heshowedasingularandgenerousloveofhisneighbouds,especiallythesickandafflicted,and grewstronginsanctity.Hegave awayoneverypossibleoccasion hismother'smoneytothepoor, andhisbiographerssensibly presumethathewascuffedby herforthisintemperategenerositybutitdoesnotappearthat hewascuredofthishabit.He livedamidstthedregsofthe town'sinhabitantsbutthiswas nodeterrentagainstgrowthin holiness.Theearlyknowledgeof miseryturnedhisheartentirely toGod,hisonlyfriend,Patron andDivineProtector.Attwelve yearsofageMartinwasapprenticedtoasurgeon,andlearnt thepropertiesofmedicinalherbs

andthemethodofmanycures inordertobeofassistanceto hisfellowmen.Everymomentof histimewasoccupied.Andwhen headministeredtotheneedsof theirbodieshealsoprayedfor thesicksoulsoftheobjectsof hisaboundingcharity.

Duringthisperiodasapprentice,heworkedmarvelsofcharity,forheneverrefusedassistancetothepouranddestitute, andaftersevereandprolonged laboursintheprisonsandhospitalshewouldcomehometo spendanotherfewhoursin prayertherealsourceofhis strengthinthesuperhumanserviceonesoyoungwasrendering hisfellowmen.

AServantintheHouseofGod.

Allthiswasonlyapreparationforagreaterandmoreusefulandheroicachievement.He wasnowfifteenyearsofage, andhumblyaskedforaplace asaDominicanTertiary,and wasdulyreceived.Hishabit wasnowthewhitetunic,the blackscapular,andtheblack mantle.Nineyearslater,feelinghimselfunworthy,itwas onlyunderobediencethathe tookthesolemnvowswhich madehispositionequaltothat ofaregularlaybrotherofthe FirstOrderofSt.Dominic.At theConventoftheMostHoly Rosary,hechoosethemostlowlyduties.Hewasthebarber, theinfirmarian,thekeeperof thecommonwardrobe.He servedthesickon,hisknees.He cleanedthewashrooms.When askedwhyhedidtheseduties herepliedthathehadchosen "tobeanabjectinthehouse ofmyGod,ratherthantodwell servantofChristandananiazHowdifferentallthisfromthe greatonesoftheearthwho dwellsurroundedbyceremony whichbetokensthePrideof power!

BlessedMartinthoughtsolittleofhimselfandsomuchof othersthatwhentheConvent hadapressingdebttosettle,he imploredthePriortosellhimto meetthisdemand.Thisoffer ofhimselfwas,ofcourse,summarilyrejected.

Hesleptonapalletinsteadof abedTheonlyornamentin hisroomwasawoodenCross, apictureoftheBlessedVirgin, andapictureofSt.Dominic.He was.however,liftedfromthe earthinecstasiesbecausehewas fabulouslyrichingrace.He predictedthedeathofapriest whothoughthehadalonglife beforehim.Thenbeganaseriesofmiracles.Butwonderful astheywere,moreimpressive andvaluablewashisexampleof uttercharity.

CompassionandCleanliness.

Hereisjustoneinstance. Martinpickedupabeggar,dirty andfilthyintheextreme,and coveredwithsores,carriedhim totheConvent,attendedtohim tenderly,andcuredhim.One oftheBrotherscomplainedbitterlyaboutsodisgustinglyuncleanabeggarbeinggivena bed. BrotherMartinreplied:"Compassion,mydearBrother,is preferabletocleanliness.RememberthatIcaneasilycleanse mysheetswithalittlesoap,but notorrentoftearscouldwash offmysoulthestainthatwould havebeenmadetherebyany unkindnesstotheunfortunate."

Forthirty-sixyearsofhis religiousprofessiontheseheroic serviceswererendered,andthen hedied,on3rd.November, 1639,agreatandexemplary servantofChristandonamazingloverofhisfellowmen.May BlessedMartinDePorrestake usalsounderthewingsofhis charity.-QuintusDelilkhan,in theCeylon"CatholicMessenger."

OnDerbyDayin1934,thedismemberedbodyofawoman, minushead,handsandlegswas discoveredinasuitcaseinthe luggageroomoftheBrighton RailwayStation.Themansuspectedandchargedwasone ToniMancini,andhewasnotb; anymeansagentlemanofrepute.Hewentintotheboxto giveevidenceonhisbehalf,and aneye-witnesssaysthis:-

WhenallEuropewasCatholic, ofcourse,itwasboundtogether byacommonsocialsystem,a commonreligion,language,art, architecture,andinstitutionsof allkinds.Godwasoverall, providingadominantmotive whichreducedeverythingtoa singleharmoniouspattern.And theUniversitiesreflectedthe conditionswhichgaveriseto them.Butthosedayshave gone,tobesucceededbyanera ofbewilderment.

Foratime,aftertheProtestantReformation,Christiantraditionslingeredon.Christian standardsofbeliefandconduct weregenerallyadmitted.Religiousformalitieswereobserved.

Butmoreandmorethesebecamebuthistoricalsurvivalsof everdiminishingsignificance.

TheCrisisintheUniversit

Thenmenbegantothinkthat, withoutreligion,theycouldat leastretaintheirinheritance fromtheGreekphilosophersof sweetreasonablenessandthe naturallygoodlife,togetherwith thetraditionsoflawandorder derivedfromancientRome.

"ClassicalHumanism,"theycalledit. UTILITARIAN.

Buttheworldwentonchanging,andtheUniversitieswithit. Theclassicalhumanistsbecame outofdate.Sweetreasonablenesshadnotseemedtoavailin awar-tornworld.1Democracy arose,tochargetheUniversities withsponsoringprivilegeand panderingtodominant,ninority classes.Andscientificprogress preferredtechnicaltohumane studies,scorningculturalideals infavourofutilitarianeconomic andsocialpurposes.

Butwhathasbeentheresult?

Secularism,irrationalism,and fragmentation.

Universitiesdenyallresponsibilityforreligionandmorals. Theysaytheyare"neutral;' theyarenotheretoedify;that's theworkoftheChurch.Anyway,theirdutyistocommunicateknowledge,andreligionand moralsbelongtotheregion,not ofknowledge,butofprivate tasteandguesswork!

Philosophy?Well,thatcanbe tolerated;butit'schaotic,and leadsnowher2,.-amassofunrealdreamsenkindlingtheoreticalcuriosityaboutmysterious andelusiveends.Observation andexperiment,notabstract reasoning,arewhatweneed. Insteadoftalkingaboutwhat oughttobe,wemusttakewhat is,andfacefacts.

TECHNOLOGY.

Soattentionisconcentratedon apppliedscienceandtechnology. Theonlythingsworthconsideringarethosethatcanbe"tested."Theonlyendworthwhile isto"getresults,"tosatisfyhumancomfortbytheconquestof Nature,tomaketheworldsafe for"gadgets."Thinkinterms ofscience!Getanintoxicating senseofpower,theoptimistic outlookwhichknowsthatsciencewillyetovercomehunger, disease,spaceitself-perhaps evendeath!Engineers,architects,doctors,dentists,mathematicians,chemists,geologiststhese,thescientificmen,arethe menofthefuture!

TheUniversityissplitintofragments,withriftsbetweenfacultiesofscience,philosophy,and literature;andevenwithinindividualfacultiesthemselves. Thestudentsthemselvesin turnbecomesplit-personalities. Theydon'tseelifesteadilyand whole,butasaseriesofdisconnectedexperiences.Theynever comeofagemorallyasresponsiblebeings:andtheUniversity leavesthemwiththeideathat suchintegrationisnotofgreat importance.Theygettheircreed andcode,ifany,unconsciously, athaphazard,perphapsfrom novelsandnewspapers-andit isamuddledcreedandanincoherentcodeatbest.

INTEGRATION.

Therearethosewhosaythat thingsarequiteallrightwith theUniversitiesevenunderthe conditionsdescribed.Butnot manyreallythinkthatway. Mosteducationalistsrealisethat aUniversitydoesnotmean chaoticdiversity.Somepredominantpurposemustbefound whichwillserveasaprinciple ofintegration.Butthereisno agreementastowhatthatpredominantpurposeshouldbe.

Classicalhumanistssaywe mustrecoverourWesternculturalherntagederivedfromthe GreeksandRomans.Universitiesshouldindeedignorereligion.Buttheyshouldaimat trainingstudentsforareasonablelifebasedupontheprinciplesofnaturalmorallaw.Every studentshouldbetaughttorecognisethehierarchyofvalues acceptabletoallgoodandsensiblemen.Theideal,andnot theutilitarian,shouldbethe rule.Thestandardshavebeen onceandforallestablishedby theGreeks.TheUniversitywas nevermeanttobetornbypolitical,social,commercial,orany sectionalinterests.Thesemay havetheirplace;butitmustbe averysecondaryandsubordinateplace.

TECHNOCRACY.

Asecondgroupstrugglingfor thecontroloftheUniversities, andbyfarthestrongest,isthat ofthe"TechnologicalDemocrats."Thedoorshavebeen thrownopentothelowerand middleclasseswho,devoidof anyculturalbackground,have swarmedintoenjoytheir "equalopportunities;"andthey havecomewithfranklyutilitarianaims.TheirplanforintegrationistomaketheUniversityserveproletarianideals,to useallitsinfluenceinsecuring thetransferofpowerfromthe "classes"tothe"masses."The Nazisgainedmuchbysecuring controloftheUniversitiesin Germany.TheCommunists haveseenthevalueofthisin Russia.Democracymustuse thehighestinstitutionsoflearningforitsownsocialisticpurposes.

AndwhatofChristians?Itis ontheirbehalfthatSirWalter Moberlyspeakshismind.In thename,bothofreligionand ofreason,hetellsClassicalHumanistsandScientificSocialists thattheirproposalscanbring onlyruintoourWesterncivilisation.

SINBYSILENCE,

Hepointsoutthefollyofboth groups,becausetheirsecularism isbasedonuncriticisedpresuppositions.Insteadofhelping studentstomakejudgmentsintelligently,thesecularUniversitysubtlyconditionsthemby ahostofunprovedassumptions onveryvitalmatters;andthe resultiseducationallydisastrous andindefensible.

Heaccusesthemofhypocrisy andtreachery.Fortheirboasted"neutrality"onreligionand moralsisnotafact.Toignore reliigonandmoralsisfarmore deadlythanpositivelytoreject them.Violentattacksupon themmaybrandreligionand moralsaspernicious,butat

nottreatthemasinsig_

leastdo nificant. Itisfallacytosuppose,"he writes,"thatbyomittingasubjectyouteachnothingaboutit. Onthecontrary,youteachthat itistobeomitted,andthatit isthereforeamatterofsecondaryimportance.Andyouteach thisnotopenlyandexplicitly. whichwouldinvitecriticism; yousimplytakeitforgranted andtherebyinsinuateitsilently. Ifindictrinationisbad,thissort ofconditioningandpreconscioushabitationissurelyworse. Fundamentally,studentsunder sucharegimearenoteducated. tralitytheyareconditionedto unthinkingacceptanceofasecularismonwhichtheyhave neverseriouslyreflected.They arenotfittedtomakearesponsibleandwiselife-choice.

ThetruthisthattheUniversitiesshirkthechallengeofthe supernatural.Christianshold that,overandabovenatural personallife,thereisyetanotherandtranscendentrealmof being.Humanlifeisnotselfsufficient.Therearerelations withaGodbeyondandabove materialandearthlyhorizons; andiftheseareignored,strestes andstrainsaresetupwhich stuntanddistortindividualand sociallife.Thefullknowledge oftheserelationshipswithGod isgivenusintheChristianreligion.Ifthisreligiousviewis true,ifthis"extradimension"s factandnotfancy,itisobviouslyall-important!

Thereforewedonotaskthat, inthepresentstateofaffairs, Christianprinciplesbesubstitutedfor"secularasumptions." Butwedodemandthattheissueshouldbefaced.Weagree withacademicfreedom.Unbelievingprofessorsarenottobe askedtoprofesswhattheydon't believe;nortobesilentabout theirownunbelief.Butthey areaskedtobewell-informed, accurate,andimpartial, Weprotestagainstanycool assertionthatChristianityisnot tenableanylonger,andthatthe Gospelshavebeenexplodedas amyth!WeassertthatunbelieversarenotjustifiedindogmaticallydismissingChristianitywithouthavingevenbothered tofindoutwhatitis.Secularistsignorethefactthatmany theysweepaside,scientists, philosophers,theologians,are theirequalsinacademicintel ligence,andhavegiventothe studyofreligiousmattersafar greaterquantityandqualityof attentionthanthey!Suchan attitudeisunworthyofaUniversity. Again,weaska"positive"insteadofa"negative"neutrality

Thatis,notabstentionfrom,but astimulationofinterestinthe Christianreligiontowhichour civilisationowessomuch.Every studentshouldatleastbeconfrontedwiththeChristianchallenge.Nopressureshouldbe putonhimtoinducehimto yieldtoit,butheshouldnot beallowedtorejectitthrough inadvertence.AndtheUniversityauthorities,Senatesand Councils,Deans,Professorsand Lecturers,shouldimpresson studentstheurgencyofattainingaconvincingphilosophyof life,puttingbeforethemallthat isnecessaryformakinganintelligentdecision.

Christians,ofcourse,cannot remainsatisfiedwiththat.It ismerelythemosttheycan hopeforatpresent.But,giventhatmuchasaninterimarrangement,itistheirdutyto workasa"creativeminority"to ChristianisetheUniversitiesby exampleandpersuasion.The issueisstillopen.ButifChristiansfailtosecureareturnto Christianity,thenthefinalvictorywillbelongtocomplete secularism.There'snohalfwayhouse,evenofpretended neutrality.

ButhowareChristianstoset abouttheirworkofpersuasion?

Theycertainlywon'tmakeany progressbycontinuingtoremainmerelypassive.There aremanyChristianswhoare administrators,Christianprofessors,Christianlecturers, Christianstudents.Theyadjustthemselvestotheprevailingatmosphere,andfailintheir dutyasmembersoftheUniversity,andintheirintegrityas Christians.

NorisitenoughtohavedenominationalCollegesandHalls. Thesearebut"safetyzones"for thosewhoalreadybelieve.

WhatChristiansmustdois, firrstly,togetathoroughknowledge,theologically,oftheirreligionandofitsapplicationto theirprospectiveprofessions.

Abandoningisolatedindividualism,theymustorganisethemselvesintoareallymilitant groupforconcertedeffort.And theymustbreakdownbarriers, enteringintofullandfrankdiscussionwithotherswhosephilosophyoflifeisdifferent.No quickandspectacularsuccess canbeexpected.Wecanbut hopeforthebest,withthehelp ofGod.Buttheonething needfulistomakeabeginning.

Toallthis,whathaveCatholicstosay?WithSirWalter Moberly'sdiagnosisoftheparlousconditionoftheUniversitiestheywillagree.Ofhis proposedremedies,theywillbe verydoubtful.TheradicaldifferencesofProtestantismfrom Catholicism,andthefactthat Protestantismitselfissuffering fromanirreparable"fragmentation,"makeconcertedactionon thepartofallprofessingChristiansimpracticable.IfthefurtherdriftageoftheUniversities towardssecularismcaninany waybearrested,Catholicswill indeedrejoice.But,asfaras theyareconcerned,theonly solutionseemstobeaCatholic Universityforthemselvessomeday,

Hehadbeenwovenintothe patternofAllHallows'insucha waythatatthisdistanceitseems hardtobelievethathehasgone. HeandhisGovernmentwere alwaysreadytogiveahelping handandspecialaidtothe Sisters.

Itwaslittlewonderthatpeople ofallclassesinallpartsof Melbournespokewithreverence andaffectionofthesilent,unobtrusivewomen,whoenteredwith agreatheartintothehomes3f thepoorortheafflicted.Little wondertheywerewelcomedwith openarmsandfarewelledwith tears.Theywerenotgonecompletely,fortheodouroftheir charitylingeredafterthem, warmingthecoldwallsthathad shelteredsuffering.
