BlessedMartinwinsbornin Lima,Peru,inSouthAmerica onDecember9th,1579inahut whichisnowenclosedbyalarger buildingandisconvertedinto,a chapel.HisfatherDonJuanue PorreswasaKnightofAlcantaraandaSpaniard,andhis mother,AnnaVelasquez,afreed colouredwomanfromPanama. TheUniversities?Therewas atimewhentheycouldanddid produceintellectualleaderswith someideaofcivilisedvalues, menwhowereabletomould publicopinion.Butnotnow. TheUniversitiesthemselves havenocompellingconvictions. Lackinganyclearsenseofdirectionandpurpose,theyareas muddledaseverybodyelse.
WhenallEuropewasCatholic, ofcourse,itwasboundtogether byacommonsocialsystem,a commonreligion,language,art, architecture,andinstitutionsof allkinds.Godwasoverall, providingadominantmotive whichreducedeverythingtoa singleharmoniouspattern.And theUniversitiesreflectedthe conditionswhichgaveriseto them.Butthosedayshave gone,tobesucceededbyanera ofbewilderment.
Foratime,aftertheProtestantReformation,Christiantraditionslingeredon.Christian standardsofbeliefandconduct weregenerallyadmitted.Religiousformalitieswereobserved.
Butmoreandmorethesebecamebuthistoricalsurvivalsof everdiminishingsignificance.
Thenmenbegantothinkthat, withoutreligion,theycouldat leastretaintheirinheritance fromtheGreekphilosophersof sweetreasonablenessandthe naturallygoodlife,togetherwith thetraditionsoflawandorder derivedfromancientRome.
"ClassicalHumanism,"theycalledit. UTILITARIAN.
Buttheworldwentonchanging,andtheUniversitieswithit. Universitiesdenyallresponsibilityforreligionandmorals. Theysaytheyare"neutral;' theyarenotheretoedify;that's theworkoftheChurch.Anyway,theirdutyistocommunicateknowledge,andreligionand moralsbelongtotheregion,not ofknowledge,butofprivate tasteandguesswork!
Philosophy?Well,thatcanbe tolerated;butit'schaotic,and leadsnowher2,.-amassofunrealdreamsenkindlingtheoreticalcuriosityaboutmysterious andelusiveends.Observation andexperiment,notabstract reasoning,arewhatweneed. Insteadoftalkingaboutwhat oughttobe,wemusttakewhat is,andfacefacts.
TECHNOLOGY.
Soattentionisconcentratedon apppliedscienceandtechnology. TheUniversityissplitintofragments,withriftsbetweenfacultiesofscience,philosophy,and literature;andevenwithinindividualfacultiesthemselves. Thestudentsthemselvesin turnbecomesplit-personalities. Theydon'tseelifesteadilyand whole,butasaseriesofdisconnectedexperiences.Theynever comeofagemorallyasresponsiblebeings:andtheUniversity leavesthemwiththeideathat suchintegrationisnotofgreat importance.Theygettheircreed andcode,ifany,unconsciously, athaphazard,perphapsfrom novelsandnewspapers-andit isamuddledcreedandanincoherentcodeatbest.
INTEGRATION.
Therearethosewhosaythat thingsarequiteallrightwith theUniversitiesevenunderthe conditionsdescribed.Butnot manyreallythinkthatway. Mosteducationalistsrealisethat aUniversitydoesnotmean chaoticdiversity.Somepredominantpurposemustbefound whichwillserveasaprinciple ofintegration.Butthereisno agreementastowhatthatpredominantpurposeshouldbe.
Classicalhumanistssaywe mustrecoverourWesternculturalherntagederivedfromthe GreeksandRomans.Universitiesshouldindeedignorereligion.Buttheyshouldaimat trainingstudentsforareasonablelifebasedupontheprinciplesofnaturalmorallaw.Every studentshouldbetaughttorecognisethehierarchyofvalues acceptabletoallgoodandsensiblemen.Theideal,andnot theutilitarian,shouldbethe rule.Thestandardshavebeen onceandforallestablishedby theGreeks.TheUniversitywas nevermeanttobetornbypolitical,social,commercial,orany sectionalinterests.Thesemay havetheirplace;butitmustbe averysecondaryandsubordinateplace.
TECHNOCRACY.
Asecondgroupstrugglingfor thecontroloftheUniversities, andbyfarthestrongest,isthat ofthe"TechnologicalDemocrats."Thedoorshavebeen thrownopentothelowerand middleclasseswho,devoidof anyculturalbackground,have swarmedintoenjoytheir "equalopportunities;"andthey havecomewithfranklyutilitarianaims.TheirplanforintegrationistomaketheUniversityserveproletarianideals,to useallitsinfluenceinsecuring thetransferofpowerfromthe "classes"tothe"masses."The Nazisgainedmuchbysecuring controloftheUniversitiesin Germany.TheCommunists haveseenthevalueofthisin Russia.Democracymustuse thehighestinstitutionsoflearningforitsownsocialisticpurposes.
AndwhatofChristians?Itis ontheirbehalfthatSirWalter Moberlyspeakshismind.In thename,bothofreligionand ofreason,hetellsClassicalHumanistsandScientificSocialists thattheirproposalscanbring onlyruintoourWesterncivilisation.
SINBYSILENCE,
Hepointsoutthefollyofboth groups,becausetheirsecularism isbasedonuncriticisedpresuppositions.Insteadofhelping studentstomakejudgmentsintelligently,thesecularUniversitysubtlyconditionsthemby ahostofunprovedassumptions onveryvitalmatters;andthe resultiseducationallydisastrous andindefensible.
Heaccusesthemofhypocrisy andtreachery.Fortheirboasted"neutrality"onreligionand moralsisnotafact.Toignore reliigonandmoralsisfarmore deadlythanpositivelytoreject them.Violentattacksupon themmaybrandreligionand moralsaspernicious,butat
nottreatthemasinsig_
leastdo nificant. Itisfallacytosuppose,"he writes,"thatbyomittingasubjectyouteachnothingaboutit. Onthecontrary,youteachthat itistobeomitted,andthatit isthereforeamatterofsecondaryimportance.Andyouteach thisnotopenlyandexplicitly. whichwouldinvitecriticism; yousimplytakeitforgranted andtherebyinsinuateitsilently. Ifindictrinationisbad,thissort ofconditioningandpreconscioushabitationissurelyworse. Fundamentally,studentsunder sucharegimearenoteducated. tralitytheyareconditionedto unthinkingacceptanceofasecularismonwhichtheyhave neverseriouslyreflected.They arenotfittedtomakearesponsibleandwiselife-choice.
ThetruthisthattheUniversitiesshirkthechallengeofthe supernatural.Christianshold that,overandabovenatural personallife,thereisyetanotherandtranscendentrealmof being.Humanlifeisnotselfsufficient.Therearerelations withaGodbeyondandabove materialandearthlyhorizons; andiftheseareignored,strestes andstrainsaresetupwhich stuntanddistortindividualand sociallife.Thefullknowledge oftheserelationshipswithGod isgivenusintheChristianreligion.Ifthisreligiousviewis true,ifthis"extradimension"s factandnotfancy,itisobviouslyall-important!
DoChristians,then,demand thattheirreligionbemadethe basisofthewholeUniversity WalterMoberlyrepliesthattheydonot. WELL-INFORMED.
Toaskthatwouldbeunjust inpresent-daysociety,Our civilisationusedtobedominatedbyChristianideas,butnot now.Unbelieversusedtobe aminorityofpeculiarpeople. Nowbelieversare.Wecannot askthattheUnversityshould becomeasectionalinstitutionto enableaChristianminorityto dominateoveranirreligious majority. Thereforewedonotaskthat, inthepresentstateofaffairs, Christianprinciplesbesubstitutedfor"secularasumptions." Butwedodemandthattheissueshouldbefaced.Weagree withacademicfreedom.Unbelievingprofessorsarenottobe askedtoprofesswhattheydon't believe;nortobesilentabout theirownunbelief.Butthey areaskedtobewell-informed, accurate,andimpartial, Weprotestagainstanycool assertionthatChristianityisnot tenableanylonger,andthatthe Gospelshavebeenexplodedas amyth!WeassertthatunbelieversarenotjustifiedindogmaticallydismissingChristianitywithouthavingevenbothered tofindoutwhatitis.Secularistsignorethefactthatmany theysweepaside,scientists, philosophers,theologians,are theirequalsinacademicintel ligence,andhavegiventothe studyofreligiousmattersafar greaterquantityandqualityof attentionthanthey!Suchan attitudeisunworthyofaUniversity. Again,weaska"positive"insteadofa"negative"neutrality
Thatis,notabstentionfrom,but astimulationofinterestinthe Christianreligiontowhichour civilisationowessomuch.Every studentshouldatleastbeconfrontedwiththeChristianchallenge.Nopressureshouldbe putonhimtoinducehimto yieldtoit,butheshouldnot beallowedtorejectitthrough inadvertence.AndtheUniversityauthorities,Senatesand Councils,Deans,Professorsand Lecturers,shouldimpresson studentstheurgencyofattainingaconvincingphilosophyof life,puttingbeforethemallthat isnecessaryformakinganintelligentdecision.
Christians,ofcourse,cannot remainsatisfiedwiththat.It ismerelythemosttheycan hopeforatpresent.But,giventhatmuchasaninterimarrangement,itistheirdutyto workasa"creativeminority"to ChristianisetheUniversitiesby exampleandpersuasion.The issueisstillopen.ButifChristiansfailtosecureareturnto Christianity,thenthefinalvictorywillbelongtocomplete secularism.There'snohalfwayhouse,evenofpretended neutrality.
ButhowareChristianstoset abouttheirworkofpersuasion?
Theycertainlywon'tmakeany progressbycontinuingtoremainmerelypassive.There aremanyChristianswhoare administrators,Christianprofessors,Christianlecturers, Christianstudents.Theyadjustthemselvestotheprevailingatmosphere,andfailintheir dutyasmembersoftheUniversity,andintheirintegrityas Christians.
NorisitenoughtohavedenominationalCollegesandHalls. Thesearebut"safetyzones"for thosewhoalreadybelieve.
WhatChristiansmustdois, firrstly,togetathoroughknowledge,theologically,oftheirreligionandofitsapplicationto theirprospectiveprofessions.
Abandoningisolatedindividualism,theymustorganisethemselvesintoareallymilitant groupforconcertedeffort.And theymustbreakdownbarriers, enteringintofullandfrankdiscussionwithotherswhosephilosophyoflifeisdifferent.No quickandspectacularsuccess canbeexpected.Wecanbut hopeforthebest,withthehelp ofGod.Buttheonething needfulistomakeabeginning.
Toallthis,whathaveCatholicstosay?WithSirWalter Moberly'sdiagnosisoftheparlousconditionoftheUniversitiestheywillagree.Ofhis proposedremedies,theywillbe verydoubtful.TheradicaldifferencesofProtestantismfrom Catholicism,andthefactthat Protestantismitselfissuffering fromanirreparable"fragmentation,"makeconcertedactionon thepartofallprofessingChristiansimpracticable.IfthefurtherdriftageoftheUniversities towardssecularismcaninany waybearrested,Catholicswill indeedrejoice.But,asfaras theyareconcerned,theonly solutionseemstobeaCatholic Universityforthemselvessomeday,

Thenewsofhisdeathhascaused greatsorrowtomanypriestsin Australia.Hehadbeenonthe staffofAllHallows'Collegefor overfiftyyearsand,althoughhe hadenteredhiseighty-sixthyear, somehow,oneneverthoughtof FatherO'Donnellasanoldman, somuchhadhebecomepartof AllHallows'andofallitsactivities.Untilhisresignationlast year,hehadguidedthedestinies ofAllHallows'fornearlyforty years,havingsucceededFather MooreasPresidentin1909.
HISINFLUENCE
Hehadbeenwovenintothe patternofAllHallows'insucha waythatatthisdistanceitseems hardtobelievethathehasgone. FormanyPriestsAllHallows' willneverbethesamewithout him,for,whentheyrevisitthe sanctuarythatstandsontherisinggroundabovetheTolka,they willmisshischeerywelcomeand thesmileonhisfresh,ruddy, fatherlyface.Theywillmissthe soundofhisvoicethatreminded themalloftheirfirstmeeting withhim,when,asJuniors,they hadenteredtheCollegeoneAutumndayinSeptemberandreceivedtheirintroductiontothe President,whomtheywereto cometoadmireandrevere.They willmissthepenetratinginquiry whichheusedmakeabouttheir missioncareer,abouttheirBishopsandtheirpeople,aboutthe success,theupsanddownsof theirworkandthatoftheirfellowpast-AllHallows'labourers.
