A.:Yes!TheSocietyofSt.

VincentdePaulisverynecessary.Thevtiordingofyour questioncouldappeartoindicate thatyouhavegotaveryfalse ideaoftheworkdonebythis world-wideorganisation.You seemtoassumethat,withthe widescaleofSocialServicesnow available,reliefgivingwork, whichisacharacteristicofthis organisation,isnotanylonger necessary.

Inspiteoftheimprovedsocial legislationinrecentyears,there arestillpoorinourmidst,and supplementaryassistanceisrequiredwherepersons,throug'a lossofemploymentorill-health, alefacedwiththeproblemof providingforafamily.Itis truethatsocialbenefitsare availabletothemajorityofthe people,thosewhoworkamong thepoorwilltellyouthatthere areexceptionalcasesforwhom theregulationsdonotadequatelyprovide.Throughthegood workoftheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul,suchcasescanand doreceivehelp,andthatunknowntothecommunity.

Allowmetodisabuseyour mindofthefalseideayouhave oftheworkoftheSociety.Reliefgivingisbutonephaseofits work.ThemembersoftheSocietyareengagedinagreat varietyofworkswherepersonal serviceisconcerned.Iwillmentionsomeofthesetogiveyouan ideaofthescopeoftheSociety's activities.Thesick,theinvalids, andtheagedarevisitedin theirhomes,hospitalsandinstitutionsandallsortsoflittledutiesareperformedforthem,The membersoftheSocietybring themcomforts,writelettersfor them,readtothem,givethem professionaladviceonvarious

Iwould likealsotomentiontheworkof theSocietydonebythe"St.John ofGodTrainingScheme"for mentaldefectives,andthework oftheSocietyforSeamen,as wellasthegaolvisitingandprobationaryvilorkdonebythis splendidorganisation.

Ithinkthatitistruetosay thatthereisnoworkofcharity foreigntotheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul.Itiswelltobear inmindthatthishelpisgiven irrespectiveofcolourorcreed, andthemembersoftheSociety areobligedbytheirrulenotto enquireintothepoliticsorfaith ofthosewhomtheyassist. There isnoneedtopointoutthatthe extentofwhichassistancecanbe givenisdependentonthefunds availabletotheSociety.
