Severalhundredpeopleeasier edattheblessingandopeningof thenewSchoolofOurLadyof Victories,FloreatPark,onSundaylast,7th.inst.TheJunctionwasperformedbyHisGrace theArchbishop,assistedbyRev. FathersBrosnan,P.P.(Floreat Park),J.J.Rafferty,Adm.,and J.P.O'Farrell.

Rt.Rev.MonsignorE.Moss, l'.P.,thememberforthedistrict,Mr.L.Nimmo,M.L.A., andMrs.Nimmo,ChiefInspector G.Worner(representingthe EducationDepartment)andMrs. Worner,wereamongtheguests fhonour.

InwelcomingHisGraceto FloreatPark,andintroducing thespeakers,Rev.FatherJ. Brosnanspokeofthedifficulties theyhadtosurmountinorderto seetheirprojectrealised.

HisGracewasgreetedwitha burstofapplausewhenheroseto speak.Afterpayingamost strikingtributetoRev.Father Brosnan,whointhecourseof twelvemonthshad,byhisunlimitedenergy,transformedadairy farmintothepresentmagnificent site,HisGracesaidthathefelt surethatsincethebuildingofthe pyramidstherehadnotbeenso muchfuss,botherandcommotion overtheerectionofanybuilding.

Hewished,hesaid,toexpress hisgratitudetotheStateHousingCommissionforthegranting ofthepermittobuildthisschool, andtotheEducationDepartment, whohadrecommendedit.A schoolinFloreatParkwasnecessary,andhewouldnothaveaskedforapermitifthebuilding wasnotessential.Whenthe newschoolisopenedinthenew yearwewillbeabletoseejust hownecessaryitreallyis.

HisGracesaidhewishedto congratulateandthankthe architect,Mr.R.Summerhayes, andthecontractor,Mr.Wells, who,despitetheshortageofso manymaterials,haddoneamagnificentjob.Thankstothem, headded,wehaveamodern school,equipped'w4ththemost modernfacilities.Thenewt schoolofOurLadyofVictories isthemostmodernintheArchdiocese,andindeedwillcompare withanyintheCommonwealth. Itsopeningmarksyetanother stepinthebattlefortheChristianeducationofourchildren.

IfAustraliaistotransmittogenerationsofAustraliansyetunborntheglorioustraditionsof ourcountry,shewilldosolargelythroughtheChristianeducationofouryouth.Religionis absolutelynecessaryforthepreservationofsocietyandthe maintenanceofgoodorder.

Theoriginofallsocialdisintegrationliesinthefactthatmen haveforgottenandignoredGod, andifAustraliaistobesaved fromchaosandruin,itwillbe savedonlyifmenrealisethatreligionisnecssaiytotheperman,ncyoftheState. HisGraceconcludedbypaying atributetotheBrigidineSisters, who,hesaid,needednointrodactiontothepeopleofWembleyandFloreatPark.Theyare first-classteacherswho,withthe assistanceofGod,willformcitizenswhowillbeacreditbothto theChurchandAustralia.

Rev.FatherH.Wallace. C.SS.R..madetheappealforthe reductionofthedebtwhich,he said,wasthesecondhighestin theArchdiocese.HecongratulatedRev.FatherBrosnanand hismanyfriendsonthesuccessfulcompletionofthiswork,and saidheknewjustMwgratified HisGracewastobepreAn:.at thisfunction.Catho!7z.Educationwas,hesaid,thedearest thingtohisheart.Inschools throughoutAustraliawearcbeginningtoseearevoltagainst themoralanddivinelaw.When religionisdivorcedfromeducationchaosanddestructionwill result.Thespeakerquotedthe exampleofHitlerandStalin, bothofwhomtookGodaway fromtheirschools.Catholic educationisavitalprincipleto us.WemaymeetournonCatholicfriendson butinthismatterwe muststandstrongandfirm. Australiaistheonlycountryin theBritishEmpirewhereweare beingpenalisedforthisprinciple, and,headded,hewasashamed asanAustralianpriesttohave toadmitthatAustraliawasthe onlycountrywherewedon'tget fairplay.

Mr.G.Worner,representing theEducationDepartment,said thatheexperiencedacertain amountofpersonalsatisfaction inbeingpresent,asitwashe whorecommended.onbehalfof theEducationDepartment,the grantingofthepermit. Education,hesaid,wassnore thanschooling;itwasaprocess thatlastedfromthecradletothe erate.WedonotrealisesufficientlytheparttheChurchhas lavedintheeducationalfield. Educationmeantthemoral,mentalandphysicaldevelopmentof achild,andallthoseaspects weretobeconsideredifitsultimateaim,thebuildingofcharacter,wastobeachieved.

FatherWallacereadthesplendidlistofdonationstohand,and theassembledguestswereinvitedtoinspectthenewbuildings.

OnSaturday,6th.inst.,VeryRev.FatherBarden,S.J., andthecommunityofSt.LouisSchool,Claremont,entertainedsome200guestsatafternoonteainthespacious, well-keptgroundsoftheSchool.

Theoccasionwastheobservanceofthecentenaryof theSocietyofJesusinAustralia.Afternoonteawas servedbyex-pupilsoftheLoretoColleges.Thearrival ofHisGracetheArchbishopwasmarkedbyaguardof honourofSt.Louisstudents.

BeredictionoftheBlessedSacramentwasgivenby HisGraceatanaltarerectedundertheschoolportico,after whichthepanegyricwaspreachedbyRev.Dr.E.Sullivan.

Fourcenturiesago,ayoung Basqueofnoblebirthreceiveda callfromGod,suchacallas menhavereceivedfromtimeto timeinthehistoryofthe Church;animperiouscall,that demandedananswerfromthe inmostdepthsofagenerousand courageousheart;acalltoserVe underthestandardofChristina specialway:bymeansofcompleteself-dedication.

AUCKLAND,NewZealand-(NC).-TheNewZealandofficer, MajorW.S.Jordan,whozeceivedtwohighdecorationsfrom theGreekGovernmentforhis heroicrolewithGreekresistance forcesduringthewar,wasaCatholicjournalistinthiscitybeforethewar.Afterthewarhe joinedtheCarmeliteOrderin Australia,butwasforcedtoleave becauseofpoorhealth.Heis nowlivinginSydney.

TheGreekGovernmenthonouredhimwiththeGoldMedal forValorandtheMilitaryCross. AttachedtoaBritishmilitarymission,hewigsparachutedinto GreeceinDecember,1943,and establishedthefirstsuccessful radiocontactbetweenoccupied Greeceandtheoutsideworld.He remainedinGreeceorganisingresistanceandcarryingonsabotageuntilhishealthgaveway. HeescapedthroughTurkeyin March,1944.

Afewmonthslaterhewas parachutedintosouthernFrance, breakinghisleginthelanding. Forthenextfewmonthshedirectedundergroundoperations againsttheGermansfromhis bedoroncrutches.

RegrettableAttitudeofSomeUnions

"ComparedwithothercountrieswearefortunateinAustraliainthatwehaveanexcellentmethodofdealingwithdisputesormisunderstandingsthat arisebetweenemployersandemployees,"saidhisGracetheArchbishop,MostRev.D.Mannix, speakingto1,200Catholicpostal employeesattheirannualCommunionbreakfastattheMyer cafeteriaonSunday.

"Thepityofit,"theArchbishop remarked,"isthatsometimes thosewhooughttobethankful thatwehavesuchasplendidsystemofconciliationandarbitration,arenotreadytoavailthemselvesofitandarereadytoacceptdecisionsonlywhenthese suitthemselves.Thisisregrettable.

"Itisapitythatemployers shouldrejectortrytoimpededecisionsoftheArbitrationCourt, anditisequallyregrettablethat sometimesemployeesarereadyto acceptanawardwhenitisfavourable,butarewhollyunpreparedtoacceptanawardwhen itisnotjustwhattheyexpected ordemanded.This,Ithink,is oneofthegreattroublesinAustralia.Peoplewholookfora perfectworldarelookingfor somethingthatwillnevercome. Wemustbearinmindthatthe worldwillalwaysbeimperfect andtherewillalwaysbegrievancesofonekindoranother.We shouldhavepatienceandbeglad thatwehavetheopportunityto settletroublesbyconciliationand arbitration.

SELFISHNESS.

"1oftenthinkthatAustralians, whetherpostaloperativesornot, donotrealisehoww01offthey arecomparedwithothercountries.Yet,unfortunately,we haveourowntroubles.Isupposethemorewehavethemore wewant.Itisveryhardtoget peopletobesatisfied. Iam afraidthatweareallinclinedto beselfish.Thisistrueofemployersandofemployees.As thingsgoinAustralia,thosewho rulethecountryarenotemployersbutemployees;theymake andunmakeGovernments.Rulingthecountry,then,greatresponsibilitiesrestupontheshouldersoftheworkers.Theyshould endeavourtobereasonableand tobealwaysanxiousforlin,-

provement,notmerelyforthemselves,butthecommunitygenerally.

EDUCATIONALINJUSTICE.

"AsMr.Brown,Mr.Fanning, andotherhavesaid,itisawonderfulthingindays,sofrequentlydescribedtobepagan, thatwehavesuchmarvellous demonstrationsasthatmadeby thepostaloperatives.Under God'sProvidenceandgraceAustraliaowesthistohersystemof Catholiceducation.Wereit notfortheCatholicschoolswe couldnotexpecttohave,and wouldnothave,suchademonstrationasthatwehaveto-day. AlloursuccessesunderGodcan betracedback,Ibelieve,tothe wonderfulsystemofCatholic educationthathasbeensetupin Australiaandsupportedbythe magnificentgenerosityandselfsacrificeofthepioneerCatholics andthosewhocameafterthem.

Thepityofit,asspeakershave indicated,isthatoureducational systemisnotrecognisedasit shouldbe.WearedoingmarvellousworkfortheCatholic ChurchandforAustralia,and yetwearetheonesectionof peopleintheCommonwealth whoalldownthroughtheyears havebeenlabouringunderavery grossformoffinancialinjustice. Iamnotgoingtodwellupon this.Everybodyknowsthe position,buttheinjusticegoes onandwehavetobeartheburden.Butinbearingtheburdenwegetsomethinginreturn, andoneofthethingscomingto

FrancisWeikert'sschemefailed,buttheJesuitFatherswho camewithhimandothersfrom theAustrianprovincewhocame afterthemwerenumbered amongthepioneermissionaries ofSouthAustralia.Theybeganat"alittlehamletcalled ClareVillage,"wheretherewere anumberofIrishCatholics,and ministeredtothemandtoGermanCatholicswhowerescatteredthroughoutthecountry;they becametheapostlesofthe northernpartoftheDioceseof Adelaide,asitthenwas,andleft behindthemafragrantmemory ofpriestlydevotionandpastoral zeal,thememoryofpriests whosenamesloomlargeinthe pagesoftheearlyhistoryofthe ChurchinSouthAustralia.They wentfurthernorthalsotowoe< amongtheaboriginesatRapid Creek,nearDarwin,andlateron fromRapidCreektoDalyRiver. Anddespitetheearlyfailure theydid,intheend,founda FettlementofGermanandPolish Catholics.ThusWeikert'sdream ysasrealised.Theyfounded alsothefirstJesuitCollegein AustraliaatSevenhills-aname withwhichtoconjurememoroes ofthatgloriouspast.Thecollegeisnolongerthere,butSevenhillsis.To-dayitisthe ChurchandresidenceofSt. Aloysius.Letitbementioned inpassingthatin1910theSouth Australianmission,untilthenattachedtotheAustrianProvince, wasmergedwiththeIrishProvince.

Somefewyearslater,followingonaMissionpreachedin MelbournebyonefoftheFathers fromSouthAustralia,negotiationswereopenedtobringthe JesuitstoMelbourne.Asaresult,in1865,FathersoftheIrish Provincearrivedtotakecharge ofSt.Patrick'sCollege,andto undertakepastoralcareofRich-

mond,Hawthoin,andsurroundingdistricts.1878sawanother importantevent;inthatyear XavierCollege,Kew,wasopened.InthesameyearArchbisimpVaughaninvitedtheJesuits toSydneytotakechargeofa parishatNorthSydneyantito "penacollege.Firstofallthe CollegeofSt.Alovsiuswas founded,andin1880another College,famousinthestoryof AustralianCatholicEducation, St.Ignatius,Riverview.In morerecentyearstheSociety wasinvitedtoundertakeanother workofoutstandingimportance inthelifeoftheChurch,thedirectionofCorpusChristiCollege,Werribee,forthetraining ofpriestsfortheEcclesiastical ProvinceofMelbourne.More recentlystill,tenyearsago,this ArchdioceseofPerthwelcomed theJesuitFathers,whenthey came,attheinvitationofHis GraceArchbishopPrendiville,to foundthisCollegeofSt.Louis. "Thisisasombrestoryofthe fatethatbefellsomemillion Ukrainianslivingwestofthe CurzonLine,orthepost-war 1421ish-Sovietboundary,"saysa ingthepamphlet."Whenthe, committeestatementaccompanyUkrainiansofpost-warPoland refusedtoheedtheSovietcallto gototheSovietUkraine,the WarsawpuppetsofStalinunleashedonthematerrorofunprecedentedbrutality.

ThelastGermanprisonersin BritishhandsintheMiddleEast havesailedforhome-andwith themhasgoneFatherHenrich Schmitz,theirseniorchaplain, whofortwoyearsmadehishome withtwoassistantsinaconvertedrailwaycrateinthegarden oftheBritishSeniorChaplain's houseinMoascar.

FatherSchmitzwasappointed GermanSeniorChaplainnearly threeyearsago.Underhimwere some20otherGermanchaplains.

Manypriestswerediscovered amongtherankandfileofthe Germanprisoners,buttheyhad notbeenallowledtoexercisetheir priestlypowersandwerenot commissioned.

Itwasrealisedatoncethat menwhoweretolivebehind barbedwirewouldbenefitgreatlyfromhavingtheirownpriests.

WhyNotaFamilyWage?

Accordingtoapressreport fromCanberra,theFederalGovernmenthopessoontoestablish anArbitrationCourtresearch bureauto"inform"theCourton questionssuchasthecalculation ofthebasicwage. Itisundoubtedlytruethatmanyitems arenotincludedintheassessmentofthebasicwagewhich wouldhavebeenregardedasluxuriesin1907,butwhicharenow amongthenormalamenitiesof life.Furthermore,itistobe hopedthatsomethingalittle morehumanthanstatisticalinformationwillbeprovidedbythe proposedresearchbureau.Inan agewhereineconomicsappearsa.: thequeenofsciences,thereisa greatneedfortemperingitsiron lawswithsomethinginthenature ofabroadsociology,seeingthat religionisinthediscard.

Priortothewaraninteresting trendwasdevelopinginArbitrationcircles,namely,thenotion thatitwaspartofthefunction oftheCourttoassessthebasic wagewithaweathereyeonthe abilityofindustrytopay.An extensionofthattendencyisthe problemofwhetherto-dayitis withintheprovinceoftheArbitrationCourttoconsiderwhether itsdecisionsfostertheperilous trendtowardsinflation.Myown viewisthatsuchconsiderations :ireparamountlymattersofhigh statecraft,andthattheworker shouldnotbepenalisedonscores onwhichtheArbitrationCourt (oranyoneelse,forthatmatter) isnotaninfallibleexpert.

TheeffortsoftheFederalGovernmenttosubstituteconciliationforarbitrationhavenot beenconspicuouslysuccessfulto (late.Thatisnotthefaultof theGovernment,insofarasthe idealismbehinditsendeavoursignoredtherealitiesofthesocial conditionofthiscountry.The presentthreatofageneralcoal strikeunderlinesthecentralissue thatthekeyunions,whichare underCommunistdomination,are notprimarilyconcernedabout industrialconditionsatall,but seizeupontheflimsiestpretext forthemakingofpoliticalcapital.

Thatisnottosay,however, thateverythingislovelyinthe industrialgarden.Despitepro-

nouncedincreasesinthenominal figureofthebasicwage,thepurchasingpoweroftheworkers' wagehasactuallydecreased,becauseintheinflationaryspiral wagesinvariablyrunabadsecondtoprices.

Whatisneededisaradical overhaulofthewholefoundation onwhichtheconceptofthebasic wagerests,sothatitcanbemade toservemoreeffectuallythe familyneedsofthenation.The dreadfuloldnotionofcomputing howlittlewasnecessaryforthe basicsubsistenceofaman,wife andtwochildrenmustyieldplace toarealisticviewofwhatconstitutesarealfamilywage.

Somesuchsystemwasoutlined intheSocialJusticeStatementof afewyearsago.Theelements ofitwere:TheCourtshouldfixa wagecommensuratewiththe modestlivelihoodofasingleman, allowinghimtosavesomething forearlymarriage.Uponmarriagesomethingshouldbeadded tohiswagestoenablehimto providedecentlyforhiswifeand imilaradditionswiththebirth ofeachchild.

Itis,ofcourse,realisedthat suchaschemewouldmilitate againsttheemploymentofthe large-familyman,andhenceit wasfurthersuggestedthatinparticulargroupingsofindustryor throughoutindustrygenerallyan equalisationfundshouldhesetup throughwhichanomaliesmight besmoothedoutandthewhole productivesystemshareequally inprovisionforthenation'sfamilies.Asystemsimilartothat ofthepresentpay-rolltaxmight, easilybedivertedtosuchapurpose. Inanycaseitiscertainthat somesuchincentivewilleventuallyhavetobeintroducedin ordertocatchupwiththeproductionlag,whichistheonly waytohaltinflationandthedisasterofanotherdepression.It wouldbeanincentive,notof charityorgenerosity,butofstrict justice.Foriftheworkmanis obligedtogiveafairday'swork, heisequallyentitledtoreceivea wagewhichwillenablehimto dischargehisobligationswith freedomanddignity,andwithout aparalysingsenseofwantand insecurity.

PerilsofSexInstruction

Ithassadlytobeconfessed thatwehavenotbeenparticularlycharacterisedbyfamily prideorfamilytraditionsinthis country.Thisisperhapsmainlyduetoourheritageofsecular educationfor,outsidetheChurch, thematerialisticconceptofmarriageandoflifeitselfisdisturbinglyprevalent.

Eveninourownranks,we must,Ithink,admitthatalltoo littlehasbeendonebywayof preparingyoungpeopleforthe greatvocationofmarriage.In thiswehavebeenreprehensively conservative,thinkingthatsomehow'ouryouthwillmu(kIle

throughastheirgrandparents did.Butitisperfectlyobvious thatthispretensecannotbefurthermaintained.Thewhole textureofsociallifehaschanged, andthemaintenanceofafamily oftwochildrenisoftenregardedasanintolerableburdenby peoplewhosegrandparentshad fifteenwithoutbeingsolicitous forthemorrow.

Sothat,whetherwelikeitor not,marriagehascomewithin thecategoryof"modernproblems,"andsincetheCatholicregardsthemarriedstateasasacramentalone,dissolubleonlyby death.itisofparamountim-

portancethatouryoungpeople enteruponitwithsufficient knowledge'andtrainingtoavoid moralpitfallsandthoseordinary difficultieswhichcanberesolved withalittleChristiancharity andcommonsense.

HencewewelcometheinaugurationofthefirstPre-CanaConferenceinthiscity,whichhasfor itsaimthepreparationofyoung peopleforthemarriedstate.Part ofthiscoursewillcomprisewhat iscalled"sexinstruction."And wemightnoteinpassingthatthe impressionofmanythatthe Churchcondemnssexeducation inthisaspectisfalse.The Popeshavenotcondemnedsex educationassuch,butthe"exaggeratedphysiologicalinstruction"whichisdivorcedfromreligiousandmoraltraining.So farfromtheChurchhavingplacedavetodosex,itwasthe Puritanrevoltwhichtookthisresponsibility.Ifanyonehasany doubtsinthisregard,lethim

Thelitterateurwilllookinvain tstareferencelibraryco,musicalcomedy.ThisistheCinderellaofthemusicworld;but likeCinderellart;lasachieveda popularityfarinexcessofits moredistinguishedbrethren.The publicwantmusicalcomedy,anti that'swhatthetheatresaregivingthepublicinthesedi,integrateddays.IconfessIamnot aferventadmirerofthe,,chatne, norofwhatgoesintoit;butde gustibus11.11estdisputandum.

Thereisadreadfulsameness aboutthemall.Thebreezyorchestralopening,swellingtothe momentwhenthecurtaingoesup onthebreezyopeningchorus-a stagefullofgailydressedpeople whoseemtoneednoexcusefor driftingonandoffaimlessly, singingallthewhile,laughing andlookingsuperblypleasedwith eachother'scompany.(In"The QuakerGirl"theinaneaspectis particularlynoticeable,Celia Reithbeingtheworstoffenderespeciallywhendoinganitem.It isalittletiresometowatchpeoplebeingabsurdlyhappyabout nothingatall.)Thenthereis theboy-girlromance,strungtogetherwithsonganddancenumbersandpassingthroughatem-

poraryestrangement(alwaysa storminatea-cup)toahappy ending.Thereistheinevitable ballet,thescoresofpeoplewho havenothingimportanttodo, anti,latelyatanyrate,acouple ofspecialtydancers.In"The QuakerGirl"thesearenotvery good. Havingcastabrickatthose featuresofmusicalcomedywhich weals-me,letmequalifywhatI havesaidbyadinittingthatif themusicandthecomedyaresur fitientlygoodallmaybeforgiven.Thisislargelythecase with"TheQuakerGill,"where themusicisoftenattractiveand thecomedyisspontaneousand IPugh-provoking.Takenallround, itisanenjoyableshow.

Theoutstandingvoiceisthat ofPhyllisDavidson,whoisPrudence,theQuakergirlherself.She producesrichandlovelytones, andisinadditionapersonable actress.Shehasawinningsmile, andlooksdaintyandfeminine. Theshowsuccessfullyrevolves roundher.OnTuesdaynight whenIsawtheperformance, BruceMcCreerywasherpartner,andhemadeanexcellentjobof thecomedysituations. Ihave neverbeforeseenhimtosuchadvantage.Itwasanexampleof yerfectcasting. Thereweretwoothersetsof principals.DavidGuyand GladysWisemanworkedtogether satisfactorily,andVictorAngell andCeliaReithmadeaneffective comedyduo.Mr.Angellgrew ononeastheshowprogressed.He

wasfullofvimandverve.He madegreatuseoffacialand otherphysicalcontortions,and ingustyflasheswasreallyremarkablygood.AcertainaturalCharlieChaplindrollness heightenedtheeffectofhiscomedy.Afurthersubstantialcontributiontothecomicelement wasmadebyRonVincent,as MonsierLaRose,ChiefofPoliceinParis.He,too,revealed afairrangeofthetricksofthe trade,andsuccessfullycombined artificewithnaturaltalent.From aoomparativestandpointhe andBruceMcCreerywerethe surprisepacketsofthenight.It seemsthatmusicalcomedy bringsouttheverybestinthese two.

Withsuchalargecast,itis impossibletodoeveryonejusticeinacommentaryofthis nature,butIwouldnotliketo passoverinsilencetheworkof UtahMomberastheParisian Madameinchargeofanexpensivefrocksalon;andIwasimpressed,too,bythequietsuavityofHowardLockeasPrince Carlo.Therewereotherswho deservemention,butmustremainnameless.

Theproduceris-MadgeSearcy, andhervolatileinfluencecanbe tracedatmanypoints.The showmovesalongatagood speed,andisacredittoher.

Musicaldirectionisinthehands ofBillyEdwards,theballetmistressisMamieJones,andstage settingsarebySydneyDavis.

TheAnglicanArchbishopofYork,Dr.Garbett,was recentlyreportedinthepressashavingdiscussedthe "largelylostsenseofmoralobligationsinthepresentgeneration,"asevidencedinthestartlingriseinthenumberof crimes.TheArchbishopinstancedtheprevalenceof lyingasameansofescapingdistastefuldutiesorofhiding somefault,andthefrequencyofadulteryasaaroundfor divorceHisconclusionwasthat"asanationwearc nowonadangerousslipperyslope."Therecanhardlybe anyquatrelamongCatholicsaboutDr.Garbett'sremarks. Infact,itwouldappearthatHisGracehastouchedupon thenervecentreofthespiritualmaladyofourtimes,which istheexpectationthatmenwillleadChristianliveswhen theycanscarcelybepersuadedtoobservethenatural virtues.Itisdifficultanddangeroustogeneraliseinsuch matters,butattimescertainclassesofexcessaresomuch inevidenceastoamounttoanationalcharacteristic.In thiscategoryto-daywemustfairlyfacethebreakdownof temperanceasmanifestedinexcessiveaddictiontoalcoholicliquor.

TheLacchanaliancharacterofmanyprivatepartiesof thesocialsetisbeyonddispute.Weacceptitaspartand parcelofthedegeneracywhichasurfeitofmoneygenerallyengendersinthecharacter.Buttheevilisnotconfinedtotherich.Itiswidespreadenoughtohaveassumedtheproportionsofanationalcharacteristic.Especiallyinthesmallercountrytowns,wherepolicesupervisioni3eitherabsent,impracticable,orlax,thepractice ofdrunkennessisalarminglyevidentandespeci4llyso amongminors.Theseexcessesamongyoutharealso prevalentinthecity,butnotsoostensibly,forfearofthe law.Littleenoughissaidofit,probablythroughdread oftheprohibitionists,butwearefacedwithanational problemwhosesolutionisnotaidedbyignoringit.It shouldnesaidherethatthetraditonalCatholicattitudeis nottowardsprohibition,buttowardstemperance.And bytemperancewemeanthatcharacteristicofallthemoral virtueswhichimpelsamantogovernhisnaturalappetite forthepleasuresof-thesensesaccordingtothenormprescribedbyreason.Itwillbeseenthatthisdefinitionis radicallydifferentfromthatofmanymodern"temperance"advocates,whoatheartarefrequentlyonlyprohibitionists.

Quiteapartfrontthepracticalfailuresofprohibition, itisphilosophicallyabsurdtosupposethatvicecouldbe eradicatedorsolidvirtueinculcatedbyasetofexternal regulationsalone.Prohibitionisnomorearemedyfor alcoholismthanissterilisationaremedyforsexualism. TheCatholicappealistoreason.Itrealisestheinherent absurditiesanddangersinvolvedincompleterepression.

Theveryexistenceofnaturalappetitesnegativesthepuritanbeliefthatoneshouldtreatthemasiftheydidn'texist. Wewe:egiventhesensesforpleasurebyGod.Theyare thereforegood.Excessintheirfunctioningisthepoint whereevilentersin.Arationalmandoesnotabusethe thingshereallyloves.Itisnotatasteforgoodbeerthat usuallyengendersdrunkenness,somuchasadepravedappetiteforcheapwine.ItissignificantthatuptotheReformationthereoccursnocivillegislationagainstdrunkenness.Thesubsequentcropoflawsagainstintemperancepointstothepassingawayofaninfluencehitherto foundsufficienttopromotesocialwelfarebymoralmeans. Ihadjustperformedaburial, andonthewaybackfromthe cemetery,Iwassummonedto visitasickwoman,whowasthe motherofelevenchildrenThe youngestwaslittleEmmanuel, agedthirteenmonths,andthe eldest,Mary,inhertwenty-first year.Theywereallgathered roundthesick-bedwhenIenteredtheroom!and,asItook themallinwithaglance,it struckmewhatacalamityit wouldbe,ifGodweretotake awaytheirmother.

BishopRozmanwasinDenveronabriefvisittotheHoly Rosarypatish.Inaninterview witha"DenverCatholicRegister"reporter,hegaveapicture ofconditionsinhishomeland.

(Thethreatofdeathanda -(ntenceto18yearsathardlabourhavepreventedtheBishop fromenteringhisdiocesefor threeyears.Thesentencewas passedonhim,inabsentia,on August26,1946,afterhehad leftLjublpana.Thecharge"anenemyoftheState-means, ofcourse,onlythatheisloyal totheHolySee.)
