"Una-Sancta"StandDisturbsChurchmen ApprehensionForFuture
ByANTHONYCOPPENS
bode,"thewordsoftheNewTes(Correspondent,N.C.W.C.Newstamentregardingthevisible Service). Churchwlerecompletelyignored.
AMSTERDAM,Sept.23.-The answertothequestionwhether theassemblywhichconstituted andorganisedtheWorldCouncil ofChurchescanbeconsidereda successwillprobablybegivenfive yearsfromnowwhentheassemblymeetsagain.Butitisalreadyafactthat, apartfromthe CalvinistsandmanypracticalmindedEpiscopalianswhodeclarethemselvessatisfiedwiththe resultsachievedhere, allthe otherslooktowardthefuture withagreaterorlesserdegree ofapprehension.
Apartialexplanationofthis apprehensionmaybefoundinthe trendofthoughtregardingthe fundamentalquestionoftheUna Sancta(OneChurch)thatdominatedthedeliberationsofthe churchmenrepresenting148religiousgroupsfrom43countries.
ThedelegatesfromtheAnglicanChurchcametotheassembly withtheideathattheUnaSanctawouldarisefromthediscussions.TheEpiscopalialnsenvisionedthecollaborationofthe churchesforthesolutionofthe socialquestionandthespreading oftheGospel.TheEasternOrthodoxhadthehopethatthe meetingwouldleadstraightaway totheestablishmentoftheUna Sancta.
ThedisciplesofCalvinendorsed theviewpresentedbytheSwiss theologian,ProfessorKarlBarth, ofBasel,whoheldthat,whilewe arewaitingforthesecondcomingofChrist,avisibleUna Sanctaisnotwithinreach.It wasthesecompletelypassive viewsofProfessorBarthwhich, notwithstandingtheoppositionof theLutheranandthebulkofthe delegates,dominatedthesessions. ItisowingtotheseBarthian viewsthatthevisibleChurch, foundedbyChristanddevelopingundertheguidanceofthe HolyGhost,theveryUnaSancta, wasnotmentionedinthecommonactoffaith-ordefinitionof theChurch-drawnupbythe colkimitteedealingwiththequestion.Aspointedoutbythe Rev.J.L.Witte,whoteachesat theCatholicseminaryatMaestricht,inanarticleinthe"Maas-
Thecommitteereachedthe conclusionthat"wedidnotsucceedinpresentingthewholeof thefaithinawayacceptableto all,"andunanimouslyadoptedthe followingdefinitionofthenature oftheChurch:"Weallbelieve thatGodhasgiventheChurchto manforthesalvationofthe world;thattheChurchowesher origintotheredeemingdeathof JesusChristandthatsheiscontimidbythepresenceandthe forceoftheHolyGhost.
"Wealsobelievethatthe ChurchmustvenerateGodand announcetheGospeltoallmen. SheisendowedbyGodwiththe giftsoftheHolyGhosttobuild thebodyofChrist.Bythe forceofthecrucifiedandrisen LoralandinimitationofHisexampleisshelivingsaintlyin faithandcharityintheservice ofmankind.Sheiscomposedof sinnerstowhompardonhasbeen grantedandwho, bytheirfaith, participateintheeternalKingdomofGodandinthemeanwhileliveinexpectationofthe finalcompletionwhichChrist willeffectbyHisreturninfull mightandglory."
Neutralobserversfollowing thedeliberationshaveexpressed theopinionthatthisdefinitionof thenatureoftheChurchmaynot beconsideredasaformulafor unityandmaybesubjectedto individualinterpretation. These observershavealsogainedthe impressionthatthedeliberations haveshownamarkedtrendtowardswhathasbeencalledapanProtestantism-atendencywhich mayjeopardisethiswholeecumenicalmovement
Regardingtheattitudeofthe assemblytowardtheRomanCatholicChurch,itcanbesaidthat itwasmarkedtoalargeextent bythedecidedlyanti-Roman viewsofProfessorBarth.Fortunatelysomeofhisadherentsdo notagreewithhimonthatpoint. ReferencestothepositionofProtestantisminSpainandthe-misinterpreted-refusaloftheHoly Seetosendofficialobserve-s madeabadimpression.But thiswascorrectedtoalargeex-
tentwhenanEnglishtextofthe pastoralissuedbytheDutch Bishopsbecameavailable.
Thefactthatthefinalreport ofthefirstassemblycommittee failedtomentiontheChurchof #omacan, perhaps, beconsidered adefeatforProfessorBarth. However, inviewoftheenormous influenceoftheBarthians, especiallythatofVisser'tHooft,SecretaryoftheWorldCouncil, and ofsuchpersonalitiesastheAmericanMethodistBishopOxnam, itwouldappearfutiletocherish illusionsontheapproachto Rome.
Still,thereweremanyamong thedelegateswhoarelongingfor unity,anditwasthesewhom FatherWittehadinmindwhen hewrote:"WeRomanCatholics shouldpraythatthetrulyecumenicalpartoftheWorldCouncilofChurchesmayobtaina completevictory."
