VATICANCITY,Sept.28.-(Radio,NC).-Thefact thattheHolySeehadsentareliefmissiontoRussiaat theverytimewhentheCommunistrevolutionaryprogrammewasbeingappliedtheremoreradicallyanddrasticallythanever,wascitedby"OsservatoreRomano"in rebukingchargesthattheChurchaimsatthedestruction oftheSovietUnion.SuchachargewasmadebyAmbrigioDonini,formerItalianambassadortoPoland,who wasdismissedfromhispostfordisciplinaryreasonsseveralmonthsago.

TheChurchhascondemned Communistdoctrineinthepast andcontinuestocondemnittodaywiththesamefranknessand resoluteness,"Osservatore"writes, but,sofarastheUSSRisconcerned,thereisnoevidencewhateverthattheHolySeeorthe Churchforwhichitstandsever advocateditsdestruction.

The"Osservatore"thenrecalls theVaticanreliefmissionsentto Russiaatthetimeofthefaminein1922-23toaidthousands uponthousandswhowerestarving,andremarksthatitcertainlywasnottheHolySeethat brokeofftherelationsthenestablishedbetweenRussiaand theChurch.Notwithstanding everything,thearticlecontinue;, theChurchwouldwillinglyresumethoserelationsassoonas possible-whichisquiteanother thingthanwishingSovietRussia'sdestruction.

AMSTERDAM,Sept.23.-The answertothequestionwhether theassemblywhichconstituted andorganisedtheWorldCouncil ofChurchescanbeconsidereda successwillprobablybegivenfive yearsfromnowwhentheassemblymeetsagain.Butitisalreadyafactthat,apartfromthe CalvinistsandmanypracticalmindedEpiscopalianswhodeclarethemselvessatisfiedwiththe resultsachievedhere,allthe otherslooktowardthefuture withagreaterorlesserdegree ofapprehension.

Apartialexplanationofthis apprehensionmaybefoundinthe trendofthoughtregardingthe fundamentalquestionoftheUna Sancta(OneChurch)thatdominatedthedeliberationsofthe churchmenrepresenting148religiousgroupsfrom43countries.

ThedelegatesfromtheAnglicanChurchcametotheassembly withtheideathattheUnaSanctawouldarisefromthediscussions.TheEpiscopalialnsenvisionedthecollaborationofthe churchesforthesolutionofthe socialquestionandthespreading oftheGospel.TheEasternOrthodoxhadthehopethatthe meetingwouldleadstraightaway totheestablishmentoftheUna Sancta.

ThedisciplesofCalvinendorsed theviewpresentedbytheSwiss theologian,ProfessorKarlBarth, ofBasel,whoheldthat,whilewe arewaitingforthesecondcomingofChrist,avisibleUna Sanctaisnotwithinreach.It wasthesecompletelypassive viewsofProfessorBarthwhich, notwithstandingtheoppositionof theLutheranandthebulkofthe delegates,dominatedthesessions. ItisowingtotheseBarthian viewsthatthevisibleChurch, foundedbyChristanddevelopingundertheguidanceofthe HolyGhost,theveryUnaSancta, wasnotmentionedinthecommonactoffaith-ordefinitionof theChurch-drawnupbythe colkimitteedealingwiththequestion.Aspointedoutbythe Rev.J.L.Witte,whoteachesat theCatholicseminaryatMaestricht,inanarticleinthe"Maas-

Neutralobserversfollowing thedeliberationshaveexpressed theopinionthatthisdefinitionof thenatureoftheChurchmaynot beconsideredasaformulafor unityandmaybesubjectedto individualinterpretation.These observershavealsogainedthe impressionthatthedeliberations haveshownamarkedtrendtowardswhathasbeencalledapanProtestantism-atendencywhich mayjeopardisethiswholeecumenicalmovement

Regardingtheattitudeofthe assemblytowardtheRomanCatholicChurch,itcanbesaidthat itwasmarkedtoalargeextent bythedecidedlyanti-Roman viewsofProfessorBarth.Fortunatelysomeofhisadherentsdo notagreewithhimonthatpoint. ReferencestothepositionofProtestantisminSpainandthe-misinterpreted-refusaloftheHoly Seetosendofficialobserve-s madeabadimpression.But thiswascorrectedtoalargeex-

tentwhenanEnglishtextofthe pastoralissuedbytheDutch Bishopsbecameavailable.

Thefactthatthefinalreport ofthefirstassemblycommittee failedtomentiontheChurchof #omacan,perhaps,beconsidered adefeatforProfessorBarth. However,inviewoftheenormous influenceoftheBarthians,especiallythatofVisser'tHooft,SecretaryoftheWorldCouncil,and ofsuchpersonalitiesastheAmericanMethodistBishopOxnam, itwouldappearfutiletocherish illusionsontheapproachto Rome.

Still,thereweremanyamong thedelegateswhoarelongingfor unity,anditwasthesewhom FatherWittehadinmindwhen hewrote:"WeRomanCatholics shouldpraythatthetrulyecumenicalpartoftheWorldCouncilofChurchesmayobtaina completevictory."

The600delegatesattendingthe sessionsvotedoverwhelmingly'n favourofaproposaltosetupan organisingcommitteefortheestablishmentof"freeandindependent"unionswhichwouldnot beconnectedwiththeCommunist-dominatedGeneralConfederationofItalianLabour(CGIL).

Theneworganisation,which aimsatobtaining2,000,000membersduringthefirstyear,plans tomakeaparticularappealto Italy'sunorganisedworkers, whosenumberisestimatedas highas10,000.000.

Thetrendtowardthecreation offreelabourunionsbecameirrasistibleaftertherepresentativesoftheso-called"Christian Current"withintheexecutive committeeofCGILwereexpelled followingtheirprotestsagainst theproclamationofpolitical strikesinconnectionwiththeattemptedassassinationoftheCommunistleader.PalmiroTogliatti.

Ontheotherhand,duringthe recentConferenceoftheLiberal Party,itwasfreelyadmittedby certainspeakersthatthatpoliticalorganisationhadnopositive programme.Itistruethatit standsfortherightofprivate property,butitinterpretsthat principleasapplyingtothedistributionofpropertynow'prevailinginAustralia,i.e.,tothe economicconcentrationofmajor industriesinthehandsofafew wealthyfamilies.Also,inthe past,ithasresistedthejustde mendsofworkersforafamily wageandfortheimprovementof workingconditions.Ifto-day itisbecomingreallymore"liberal"initsviewsofthesematters,itisatleastpartlybecause itisoutofpoliticalofficeant partlybecauseitrealisesthesocialinevitabilityofsuchchanges.

ThePropagationoftheFaith Society-thePope'sownSociety -caresforthemissions.Every Catholicisexpectedtojoin,and itsconditionsofmembershiprequireadailyprayerfortheMissions.Prayeristhefirstway bywhicheveryCatholiccanbe amissionary.OnaMissionSundaytheHolyFathercallsupon everybodytoprayforthisintention.
