(Duringhisrecentworldtour, Mr.E.deValerasaidthatifpublicinterestcouldbearoused, thentheBritishGovernment wouldonceagainseriouslyconsiderthequestionofthepartitionofIreland.Tobringthe truefactsofthecasebeforethe public"Anti-PartitionLeagues'' havebeenformedinseveral countries.ThefollowingpetitiontotheAmericanCongressis proofofthefactthatthepartitionofIrelandisstillaburning question.-Ed.)

TERMSOFPETITION.
Thepetition,entitled"Endthe PartitionofIreland,"readsas follows:
TothePresidentandtheCongressoftheUnitedStatesof America: Thispetition,presentedunder rightsreservedintheFederal Constitution,recites:
ThatcountlessthousandsofAmericancitizensofIrishbirthor bloodaresmartingunderthe indignityoftheforciblepartitionof,IrelandbyEngland; ThatEnglanditistitutedthispartitionunderimpelledthreatof superiorforce; ThatEngland, bysubsidyand otherwise, hasmaintainedthis partitionagainstthevoiceof theoverwhelmingmajorityof thepeopleofIreland; Thatsincethe(laysofPresident WashingtontheIrishhave beenapotentforceintheupbuilding, themaintenance, and thedefenceoftheUnited StatesofAmerica; ThattheUnitedStatesofAmericanowhastheundoubted power, andmerelybytheapplicationofeconomicsanctions, torequirethatEngland ceasethecontinuingwrong WhichsheisinflictinguponIreland.
Wherefore,itisherebypetitionedthatthePresidentandthe CongressoftheUnitedStates ofAmericamakesuchnecessaryrepresentationstoEnga landaswillbringaboutthe endofthepartitionofIreland

BROKENPROMISES.
TherightofIrelandtofreedomandindependencehasbeen deniedthroughthecenturiesby theimpositionoftheforceof Britisharms.Yet,despitethis armedsubjugationoftheIrish people, theyhaveremainedanationdistinctandseparate, and notoneoftheeffortsoftheir Englishconquerorshasbeenable tochangethecharacterandnatureoftheIrish.Smartingunder theyokeofBritishdomination, theIrishhaveneverceasedto fighttoregaintheirfreedom, nor topetitiontheBritishfortheir completeliberation.Infact, duringtheFirstWorldWarthe
BritishpromisedthatIreland wouldbegrantedtheirindependencefollowingtheendofhostilities.AHomeRuleBillhad beenpassedbytheBritishParliamentpriortothefirstwar,but itseffectsweresuspendedasa resultoftheoutbreakofhostilities.Then,onthepromiseof freedomfollowingthewar, 300,000Irishvolunteeredforserviceinthatwar,andsuffered greatercasualtiesthandidthe BelgianArmyasaresult.Despitetheseeffortsandthesesolemnpromises,theIrishneverthelessweredeniedtheirindependence.
ABRITISHDIVISION.
Followingthatwar,England inauguratedtheprogrammeof partition,andcutofffromthe restofIrelandsixofthenine countiesoftheprovinceofUlster andcreatedoutofthemNorthern Ireland,establishingthereina separateParliamentandaseparateGovernmentfromtherestof Ireland,andkeepingthisnew GovernmentsubjecttotheBritishParliamentandtoBritish dominationandcontrol.Little wonderthatduringtherecent war,theIrishcouldplacebut mallconfidenceinanyofthe promisesofEngland,andsince Irelandwasnotsubjectedtoattackatanytime,shetherefore declinedtojoinwithEnglandin afighttopreservetherightsof smallnationstotheirindependence.Havingbeendeceived once,Irelandwiselyrefusedtohe trickedasecondtimewithempty promises.Moreover,asmall nationsuchasIrelandcouldoffer littleofherselfinmodernwarfare,lackingasshedoesaircraft andmunitionsplants,andso wouldhavehadtoreceivecompletearmamentfromoutside sourcesattheexpenseofthenationsalreadyengagedinthat conflict.
RECEPTIVEMOOD. Thefrictionthathasexisted betweentheBritishpeopleand theIrishcanreadilybeeliminatedandaspiritoffriendshipand goodwillbecreatedbetweenthese peoples, iftheEnglishwillbut

BASISOFAMITY.
Throughoutthecenturiesthe economyofIrelandhasbeen closelytiedtothatofGreatBritain, andbecauseofthelocation ofthetwocountries, thisis necessarilyso.Howmuchbetter itwouldbeifthatrelationbetweenthecountriesweretobe placeduponacompletebasisof amityandgoodwill.Thiscan onlycometopassbytheeliminationofthedivisionofthisnationandthereunificationofthe entire32countiesofIreland;by theremovaloftheBritishcontrol overtheBelfastGovernment; bythewithdrawalofBritish troopsandeliminatingthesecret police, knownasBSpecials;and, finally, byanabrogationofthe CivilAuthoritiesAct,under whichtheconstitutionalrightsof thepeopleinnorthernIrelandare deniedthem.
ENDINGAWRONG.
AsAmericancitizenstheycome beforetheCongressandpresent theirpetitionaskingthatthis Nationuseitsgoodofficesin bringingabouttheunificationof Ireland, sothatatlasttheIrish people, oneofthemostancient ofallEuropeannations, may onceagaintakeitsrightfulplace asafreeandindependentrepublic amongstthedemocraticpeoples oftheworld.TheCongress, throughthePresidentandthe DepartmentofState, cando muchtoachievethisendandto rightthewrongthathasbeen perpetratedupontheIrishNationduringthepastquarterofa century.

SufficientScripturalIndications ofPurgatory
WITNESSOFOLDANDNEWTESTAMENTSLastweekIbeganareplyto "Blank,"VictoriaPark,whohad questionedmeontheCatholic doctrineofPurgatory.The questionwasasfollows:
"Inlisteningtoyourbroadcast onSundaynight,1wassomewhatpuzzledatyourdoctrine ofPurgatory. Ihavebeena studentoftheScripturesfor amatteroffiftyyears, andnot inalltheScripturesisthere mentionedsuchaplace. Will youkindlyshowmeinthe Biblewheresuchaplaceis mentioned"?
A.:Thereplytothisquestion fallsihtotwoparts.Firstof all,itisnecessarytocorrect yourfalsesuppositionthatevery genuineChristiandoctrinemust beclearlycontainedintheScriptures.LastSundaynight triedtoshowyousomethingof therealnatureoftheChristian Revelation.Ipointedoutthat ChristcommittedHisteaching, nottothepagesofabook,hutto theApostlesandtheirsuccessigs-alivingChurch.This ChurchisempoweredtotransmitChrist'steaching,todefend it,andtoexploititsfullrichness.Nowsomeofthedoctrineswhichitisthetaskand privilegeoftheChurchtoteach arecontainedinthevarious booksofScripture;othersare not.Ofthosedoctrineswhich arecontainedintheScriptures, someareexpressedclearlyand explicitly,othersinanobscurer manner,andothersagainare merelyglancedatorhinted. WhentheChurchteachesitsdoctrineoftheEucharist.itcan pointtothatdoctrineasclearly andexplicitlycontainedinthe Scriptures;whenitteachesthat Christianmarriageissacramental,itcanpointtoapassagein St.Paulwherethisdoctrineis implied,althoughnotexplicitly stated;whenitteachesthat Christinstitutedasacramentof Confirmation,itcanpointtoa partoftheNewTestamentwhere thisishintedat,butbynomeans clearlytaught.Ontheother 'hand,whenitteachesthatacertainnumberofbooksareinspiredbyGodandarethereforeto berecognisedasformingacanon ofSacredScripture,itcannot pointtoanysatisfactorytextin theScripturesthemselves,for thesedonottellusthattheyare inspired,andtheygiveusnoinstructionsaboutwhichbooksare tobeacceptedasScriptureand which aretoberejected.
NOFINALCOURTOF APPEAL.
Yousee,then,thatitisunreasonabletolookupontheBible astheultimateandonlysource ofrevealedtruthandthesolearbiterofrightbelief.TheBible belongstotheChurch,and.isan immenselyimportantrepository ofmanyofthetruthswhichthe Churchteaches.Butthatitall. Itisnotasystematicanddetailedstudyoftheentirebodyof Christianbelief,muchlessthe onlygroundofthatbelief.
Havingsaidthis,Inowfeel freetodealwiththeScriptural basisforbeliefintheexistence ofPurgatory. Imighthave confrontedyouimmediatelywith textsthatsufficientlyprovedthe point, butIwantedtomakeit quitecleartoyouthatScripture isnot, asyouappeartothink, thefinalcourtofappeal.
COMMONSENSECASE.
TheCatholicdoctrineofPurgatoryisimpliedwhereverthere isquestionofprayingforthe
dead.If,afterdeath,thereare onlytwostatespossible,completehappinessorcompletemisery,immediateandfullyachievedsalvation,orutterdamnation, thentherewouldbenopointin intercedingonbehalfofthedead.
Ifthesoulsofthosewhodieare tiansferredimmediatelyeitherto HeavenortoHell, thenwhat wouldbetheuseofprayingfor them?IftheyareinHenven, theydon'tneedourprayers;if theyareinHell, thenourprayerscan'tdothemanygood. If prayerforthesoulsofourdead isnotjustamockeryandan emptyformofwords, thenthere mustbesomemiddlestatein whichthesesoulsarebeingpurgedofsinandarepayingthedebt incurredbysin, inpreparation forthatVisionofGodinwhich heavenconsists.
WITNESSOFMACCHABEES.
Nowthereisonewell-known placeintheScriptureswhichindicatesquiteclearlythatthe Jesswereawareofthepossibilityofhelpingthesoulsofthe deadbysacrificeandprayer.We readinthesecondbookofMacchabeesthatJudas,thecommanderoftheforcesofIsrael, offeredsacrificeforanumberof hismenwhohadfalleninbattle.Thesemencertainlyhad'i penaltytopayforasinof idolatrywhichtheyhadcommitted,butofwhichtheywerepresumablyrepentantbeforethey died.Judas,"makingagathering senttwelvethousand drachmsofsilvertoJerusalem forsacrificetobeofferedforthe sinsofthedead,thinkingwell andreligiouslyconcerningtheresurrection(forifhehadnot hopedthattheslainwouldrise again,itwouldhaveseemed superfluousandvaintoprayfor thedead).And,becauseheconsideredthattheywhohadfallenasleepwithgodlinesshad greatgracelaidupforthem.It isthereforeaholyandawholesomethoughttoprayforthe deadthattheymaybeloosed fromtheirsins"(II.Mac.,12, 43-6).
HOLYANDWHOLESOME THOUGHT. AlltherequirementsforprovingthedoctrineofPurgatory aretohandinthispassage. Thesedeadwarriorshadbeen foundwithimagesofpagangods undertheirtunics.Theyhad sinned,therefore,bysuperstitionandfalseworship.Atthe sametime,theydiedfightingfor IsraelandIsrael'sfaith.These waseveryreason,therefore,to takeitthattheyhadrepentedof theirsin,andhaddiedwiththeir willsdirectedoncemoretothe oneGod.Forthisreason,we aretoldthatthey"hadfallen asleepwithgodliness,andhad greatgracelaidupforthem: Theyhadsinned;therewasevery indicationthattheyweresorry fortheirsinandthattheirguilt wasthusobliteratedbefore death;andyettheleader,Judah, stillfeelsithisdutytooffersasrificeontheirbehalf.Moreover,thenarratorofthepassage nekestheexplicitstatementin parenthesis:"Itis,therefore,a holyandawholesomethoughtto prayforthedeadthattheymay beloosedfromtheirsins."In otherwords,itisclearthatafter deaththerearesomeeffectsof sinwhichmayhavetobeaccountedfor,somepenaltyand purificationwhichisanessential prelude,insomecasesatleast,to theunspeakablevisionoftheall-
holyGod.Andthatisprecisely theCatholicnotionofPurgatory.
OLDCANONOFSCRIPTURE.
ImayaddthatIhavequoted theabovepassagefromtheLatin versionofthebooksofMacchabees;theoriginalGreekhas afewslightverbaldifferences whichinnowayaffectthedoctrinalmeaning, andIwouldhave translatedfromthisGreektext iftheotherhadnotbeensofamiliarItmaybethatinyour editionoftheBiblethebooksof Macchaabeesarenotincluded, andyoumayhavetolookelsewhereforthem.Buttheyare partoftheoldAlexandrian canonoftheScriptureswhich wasfamiliartoSt.Paulanri othersacredwriters, andhas beenadoptedanddeclaredauthenticbytheCatholicChurch.
DEBTOR'SPRISON.
InthetimeofChristdevout .Iewsprayedforthedeadasthey donow.Wenowherereadthat ChristorHisApostlesreproved thispractice.Indeed, thewords ofChristHimselfreceivetheir simplestexplanationifwetake itthattheyimplyapossibilityof purgationafterdeath.Hespeaks ofaprisonfromwhichaman shallnotcomeoutuntilhehas paidthelastfarthing(Matt.5, 26).AndofacertainsinHe saysthatitisofsuchanature thatit"willnotbeforgiven eitherinthislifeorinthelife tocome"(Matt.12,32).It therecouldbenoquestionof purificationorthepayment01 penaltyinthelifetocome, these lastwordsofOurLordwould scentverystrangeindeed. And theprisonfromwhichaman. comesoutonlyafterpayingthe lastfarthingmoreclearlyappliestoPurgatorythantoanythingelse.

Thereisanothertextwhich wouldaskyoutoconsidercarefully.Youwillnotfinditan easytexttounderstand,butit youhavethepatiencetopuzzle itout,Ithinkyouwillfindthat ityieldsitsbestandmostconsistentexplanationwhenunderstoodasreferringtoPurgatory.
