pearancesgo,then,thereisa separationofOurLord'sBody fromHisBlood.Christbecomespresentonthealtarinan external,sacramentalform, whichrepresentsthedeathwhich Heunderwentlongagoonthe Cross.And,asasacrificeis concernedwiththeexternalstate ofthevictimwhichisbeingofferedtoGod(sinceitisthisexternalstatewhichmakesita sign)itcanbesaidthatthis "sacramental"separationofOur Lord'sBodyandBloodisRIMcienttomaketheMassatrue sacrifice.
Butwecangofurtherthan this.Itisnotonlyinvirtueof thedistinctsacramentalappearancesthatChrist,whenHebecomespresentonthealtarduringtheMass,becomespresentas avictim.Thosedistinctappearancesofbreadandwinedo indeedsignifyHisdeath,andso doindeedindicatethatHeisa victim.ButinHimself,and apartfromthesacramentalappearances,Christistrulyavictim,sinceHeretainsthatstate ofvictimhoodintowhichHeenteredlongagobyHisdeathon theCross.OurLordbecomes presentundertheEucharistic speciesjustasHeexistsnowIn Heaven.ButHeexistsinHeavenas'onewiththemarkofHis woundsstilluponHim,always livingtomakeintercessionfor us.Inotherwords,Heexists inHeavenasavictim,albeita glorifiedvictim,andonewhocan nolongersufferordie.lit comes,then,asavictimbeneath theappearancesofbreadand wineattheconsecrationofthe Mass,andasavictimHeisoffered.Andasoftenasyou haveatruevictimoffered,you haveatruesacrifice.

Inordertounderstandtherole oftheChurchwemightsaythat wearelivingnowattheendof aneraofhistory.That,of course,isatruism,butitisa fact.
Whatisendingiswhathas beenknownasHistoricalLiberalism-aphilosophywhichhas prevailedintheworldforabout 200years.HistoricalLiberalismhadthreetenets:economic, politicalandsocial.
Economically,HistoricalLiberalismheldthateverymanshould beprivilegedtoaccumulatesuch wealthashepleased,andthesocialgoodofallwouldresult.
Politically,itheldthattheState wasonlyapoliceman;itsfunctionwasnegative;itwasnotpositivelytocreatethepublicgood, butmerelytopreventinvididuals fromdisturbingit;and,finally, socially,HistoricalLiberalism heldthatfreedommeansthe righttodowhateveryoupleaseinotherwords,freedomwasa physicalpowerratherthana moralpower.
Inthecourseofthelastcenturythefullfruitsofthisdoctrinebegantomanifestthemselvestotheworld.
EconomicLiberalism.
Firstofall,asaresultofits economicpolicy,therewascon-
cdntrationofwealthinthehands ofafewandtheimpoverishment ofthemasses.Thoughafew individualshadaccumulatedatremendousamountofwealth,it wasnotverymuchconsolationto knowthat,perhaps,onedonkey wouldreceiveacarrotifone thousandhadalreadydiedof starvation.Thentherebegan tobeaconflictofindividual egotismsduetotheselfishness ofmankind.Finally,thefalse notionoffreedom,thatitmeant therighttodowhateveryou pleased,developedintoakindof license.Itwasassumedthat

Neverbeateninbattle,she gloriouslyfoughttopreservethe independenceofthenewnation, andupheldAmerica'sfundamentaltraditionsoffreedomofthe seas.Shehasbeenreconstructedfourtimes,thelasttimein 1927,whenthepenniesofschool childrenacrossthenationaided inherrestoration.

Manyarethetalesofhergallantconductandthesuperbseamanshipofherofficersandcrew. Theyformoneofthebrightest chaptersintheannalsofthe LnitedStatesNavy.
Buttherewasoneincidentin iierpeacetimecareer-anditisa little-knownstory-whichcaused considerablecommotioninofficialnavycirclesatthetimeof itsoccurrence.
Thiswas'onAugust2,1543, when,upontheinvitationofthe commandingofficeroftheship, thenstationedatGaeta,Italy, thecrewreceivedandentertained ropePiusIX.onathree-hour isitaboardthefrigate.

Revolutionaryforceshadgain edcontrolofHome,andonthe nightofNovember24,1848,Pius IX.fledindisguisetoGaeta, wherehetookrefugewithFerdinand11.,KingofthetwoSkilies. 1hediplomaticcorpsaccreditedtotheHolySeefollowedthePopetoGaetaandremainedthereuntilhisreturnto Rome.
Inthemeantime,inAmerica, thereweresomemarkeddemonstrationsofsympathyforPius IX.,andsomedailynewspapers, particularlyinNewYork,advocatedthatthePopebeinvitedto establishhisresidenceinthe UnitedStates.

Inthemidstofthesedemonstrations,administrativeofficials inWashingtonreceivedthe"extremelyembarrassingandpainful news"thatCaptainJohnGwinn, CommanderofU.S.S."Constitution,"hadinvitedandentertainedPopePiusIX.onboardthe shipatGaeta.

Alexander,formerlyofTeachers' College,NewYork. AddressedtothePublications ControlBranch,itsetsnormsto regulatetheallotmentofpaper fortheprintingoftextbooks. Fortheelementaryschoolleirel theprioritiesarelistedinthis order:Reading,Heimatkunde (developedfromthepointof viewofcivics),HealthandSafetyEducation,NaturalSciences, GeographyandHistory,Music, Germanlanguage,Arithmetic andReligion. Recently,leadingBavarians,includingHisEminenceCardinal Faulhaber,assailedtheproposed schoolreformnowbeingurged bytheAmericansasanunwarrantedintrusionuponthecultureofaconqueredpeople.
Ontheirpart,theBavarian leaderscontendthatthisdoes notmeettheissue.Thefact thattheremayberelatively moretextbooksonreligionthan onanyparticularsecularsubject (becausereligioustextbooksdid nothavetobedenazified)does notmeanthatthereareenough textbooksonreligionandthatno moreneedbeprinted.

Thesehistoricalexplanations havealwayshadtheirencouragingside.Fortheyhavesuggestedthattimeisonthesideof AmericanCatholicismasthe grandchildrenandgreat-grandchildrenofdifferentimmigrant strainsmakeonegreatCatholic community.Itdoesnotseem extravaganttohopethatasthe UnitedStatesemergeswitha newconsciousnessofherpositionasthestrongestpowerin theworld,sotooAmericanCatholicsnolessthanAmerican statesmenwillfeelaconcernnot felttenortwentyyearsagofor whathappensoutsidetheUnited States.
Nowifthisprovestobethe case,AmericanCatholicinfluenceonAmericanstatesmanship willgrowattheverytimewhen Americanpowerintheworldwill havebecomegreaterthanever before.Thiswillbeimmensely important.ForAmericanCatholicadvicewillbetheinformedadviceofpeoplewhoknow therealities,notthroughany specialstudyormeritoftheir own,butbecausetheirreligion hassavedthemfromthehuge pitfallsofwrongappreciation intowhichtheirProtestantan-I secularistfellowcountrymen stumblesoeasilywhentheyhave todealwithEurope.

Inthepoliticalbrawlthatis Europeto-day,thefactsoflife aresimplythatitisnotthecontinentalSocialistswhocanbereliedontodefendwhatwecallour wayoflife.Itisnottheywho canbeexpectedtoprotectthe individualasagainsttheState.
InEuropeto-dayitistheCatholiccauseandtheCatholicpoliticalpartieswhichrepresentmuch morefaithfullythananyother bodiesthedignityofthehuman person. TheSocialists,whoseshallow rootsstandintheMarxianphilosophy,arereallystrickenwith aterribleinternalweaknesstheiremotionalpreferencescontradicttheirintellectualcreed. Asmentheyarehumaneandare livinginthecivilisedandliberal tradition,anxioustoextendits benefitsaswidelyaspossibleand togivetotheproletariatthe standingandadvantageswhich uptonowthebourgeoisiehasenjoyed.Theseambitionstake theirsupportfromahighviewof man,whichtheliberalstookover withoutquestioningfromCatholictheology.AndtheMania() faithcanfindnoplaceforany highviewofman.
Indeed,theMarxiansseeman's idealsandaspirationsasasort ofphosphorescentemanation fromhiseconomicactivities.If thisbeso,thenMarxiansmust naturallycondemnthemselvesto amaterialismwhichleavesthem nologicalgroundsforclaiming sespectfortheindividual.The onlyrelevantquestionconcerning theindividualbecomes:what partoftheproductiveprocess doesherepresent?Ifitisanobsoleteandvanishingpart,then seisananachronismwhomay ''steactivelyassistedtodisappear, theprocessofhistoryhaving passedthroughandbeyondhim. Thiswasthephilosophywhicn resultedinsuchvariousliquida tionsastheKatyitWoodmurdersbytheCommunistsofthose Poleswhowerethought,bytheir originsorinterests,tobeobduratetoCommunistteaching.
MostcontinentalSocialists shrinkwithhorrorfromthelogicalconclusionoftheirgeneral teachingandstilltalkalanguage aboutindividualworthwhichis irreconcilablewiththeirMarxianphilosophy.Everywherein EuropetheSocialistsarefeeling thisinnertensionandarethreatenedwithasplit.Thosein whomliberalismandhumanism aredominantwillgowiththe Christianandliberalparties,and thoseinwhomMarxismisdominantwillfindtheirfinalhomewith theCommunists.
ThecontinentalSocialistsdo notprovideanythingsolidon whichEuropecanberebuiltor restored.Theyareunpredict-

able.AllwecansaywithcertaintyisthattheyaretheEuropeanswhoarethemosttorn intwainasthedifferencebetweenEastandWestbecomes moremarked.Andthepolicy ofsupportingthemprincipally andinpreferencetoanybodyelse isapolicywhichbelongstothe periodinwhichAmericanand Britishdemocratscouldstillthink itusefulandplausibletotalk ofagenuinecollaborationamong theBigThreewhohadwonthe wartogether.
TherealpolicyoftheWest,ot LondonandWashington,mustbe tolookrealisticallyatthecontinentofEuropeandcountupall theforceswhichrepresentthe samekindofvaluesandthesame kindofsocietyasthatwhichthey themselvesembodyanduphold. Sodoing,theywillfindthatin everycountrywestofRussiathe Communistsandtheadherentsof Moscowarestillaverysmallminority;thatthemajorityofthe populationeverywherewantsto faceWestandnotEast;andthat thisismostemphaticallytrueot anybodywhoisabelievingChristian-whollytrueifheisaCatholic,lessuniversallytrueifhe belongstotheOrthodoxChurch.
Butthesepopulationsareuewildered.Theirbewilderment grewfrom1941onward.For theycouldnoteasilybelievethat theBritishandAmericanscote, reallybesosimpleandgullible astoacceptSoviet"democracy' seriously,couldreallyhaveforgottenwhattheythemselveshad cocopiouslywrittenanddeclaredtobethethingsforwhichthey werefighting.Allofasudden, throughtheexigenciesofwar,a whollydifferentspiritofblind trusthadbeenadoptedasthe higheststatesmanship.Behind it,ofcourse,laythecalculation thatifthewarwaswon,theSo. vietUnionwouldbeoneofthe principa 1victors.Itwould thereforebeamuchmoreuseful friendthancouldbefoundany- whereelse,certainlymuchmore usefulthananyofthebattered peoplesinenemyorliberatedEurope.
To-daywearecalleduponto makeawhollynewrevaluation, forwehavediscoveredthatit takestwotomakeafriendship, whileoneissufficienttomake badrelationsandcompetitive hostility.
ThepityisthatinseekingcontinentalalliesbothBritainand eunericashouldbesoloatheto supportandcollaboratewith thoseveryEuropeanforcesmoat akintoourownpoliticalphilosophyandtraditions.Ireferto theChritianparties.Whatmay btcatiedthesalesresistanceto theideaofworkingwiththe ChristianpartiestakesverydifferentformsinBritainandthe U.S.A.
TheBritishobjectionmaybe summedupasfollows:wehavea Socialistadministrationwhose naturalfriendsaretheSocialists abroad.InthecaseofGermany theassumptionwasalwaysfosteredthattheNazisregarded theSocialDemocratsastheir chiefandmostdangerousenemies.ConsequentlytheLabour Governmenthastriedinallsorts ofwaystofostertheriseofGermanSocialDemocracy.Ithas favouredtheSocialDemocrats muchmorethanithastheChristiaiDemocrats,anditisrather disconcertedto-daythatitspolicyhasnothadmoresuccess.It wouldbeamistaketothinka ConservativeorCoalitionGovernmentwouldhaveactedverydifferently.IttoowouldhavebegunbyfightingshyoftheChristians,justasinitswartimepropagandatoGermanyitmade muchmoreoftheSocialistclaim thanoftheChristiantheme.
Behindthisattitudethereisa greatdealofsimple,straightforwardanti-Catholicprejudice, aninheriteddreadoftheChurch, afearthatitsinfluencemaybe increasing,andannureasoning beliefthattheinterestsofGreat Britainwouldbeinjuredifthe influenceoftheCatholicChurch

grew.Thisisabeliefwithout logicalfoundationbutwithhistoricalorigins. Thetruthisthatto-day,and perhapsforthefirsttimesince theReformation,theinterestsof theChurchandoftheBritish Empirearethesame.Bothurgentlyrequirethatthereshallbe afreeoropensocietyoveras greatanareaoftheearth'ssurfaceaspossibs,anareawith whichtheBritishcantradeand inwhichtheirpoliticalandetc: nomicidealswillbeunderstood, anareainwhich,becausevoluntarysocietiesareacceptedbylaw andpublicopinion,theCathelic Churchasthegreatestvoluntary societyintheworldcanliveher life.Theclosedtotalitariansociety,whichiscreepingforward inanever-wideningcircumferencefromitsMoscowheadquarters,isoneinwhichtheChurch isstifledandtheBritishfind thereisnoonetotradewithbut thesinglecustomer,theomnipotentstatewithitsmonopolyot foreigntrade.
InAmericathereluctanceto collaboratewiththeChristian partiesinEuropeis,asisthe casewithBritain,aprojectionot alocaltradition.TheChurch hasbeenavoluntarysocietyfrom thebeginning,thoughtoflocally asaparticularchurchwhicha manjoinsandattends.Thisdivorceofreligionandpoliticswas nevermeantinthatAmerican traditiontomeanthatpoliticians weretobeunbelievers,stillless weretheytobepositivelyantiChristian.Butsincereligion hasnoplaceintheAmerican forum,Americanpoliticianslike theirBritishconfreresholdEuropeanChristianpartiessuspect.
TheCatholicsinGreatBritain haveaparticularcontributionto maketotheirnationallife,becausetheyhavebeenforcentur iesasmall,self-reliant,voluntary body,naturallydistrustfulofthe paternalactivitiesofthestate whichhaslovedthemsolittle., Morethananyothergroupin Englandtheyinstinctivelyrecoil fromthecollectivistfashionso; thishour.
Butifwithouttheirinfluence,BritishCatholicsarea smallminority,wheretheirAmericanfellowCatholicsareimmenselystrongandinaposition tomakeaneffectivecontribution totheinternationalpolicy,,i theircountry.Thedisastrous Anglo-Americanpolicywhichencouragedanti-ChristianBolshevismtocomesomuchfarther intoCentralEuropethanitnee everhavedone,hasbeenthe greateventthatawakenedan AmericanCatholicreaction.Tlee vigourofCatholicopinionhas shownthatthelatePresident Rooseveltwasalreadyoutofdate whenhedeclaredsoself-contidently,"ThereisnoCatholicvote.'
AndyetImustconfessthatto anEnglishCatholicithaslong beenagreatsourceofbewilder. mentanddiscouragementthat theleadersoftheAmericanDemocraticParty,whichhasbeenso dependentonCatholicvotes,seem, abletoconducttheirforeignpolicywithsolittleregardforthe deepestCatholicconvictions.We notehowverydifferentitiswith theJews,thoughtheynumber notevenafifthoftheCatholics. BothgreatAmericanpartiesare conspicuouslycarefultoexpress sympathyforZionism.What evertherightsandwrongsofthe Palestineissue,theJewishclaim isverymuchlessclearthanthe calmofmorethantwentymillionCatholicPolesnottobe governedagainsttheirwillby3 governmentchosenandimposes 'tytheKremlin.Neitherparty isconspicuouslycarefultoexpresssympathyfortheseCatholics.
AmericanCatholicshavea uniqueopportunitytomaketheir influencefeltatthistimewhen theUnitedStatesisthegreatest towerintheworldTheircounselcandomuchtoguidethe. worldtopeace.Theirpowercan deployitsspecialenergiesandactvantagesforthepreservationof theChurchwhereverherlifeand activitiesarethreatenedasthey areinCentralEuropeto-day.-"Si

ArecentvisitortoPerthwas ArchbishopMarIvanios,ofTriuandrum,India,whohasbeenresponsibleforthereunitingto Romeofalargesectionofthe schismaticalJacobiteChurchof India.
ArchbishopMarIvanois,after takinghisdegreeofMasterol ArtsinanIndianUniversity,was forsometimeinchargeofthe dissidentJacobiteHighSchool andSeminary.Subsequentlylie wasappointedtoaChairatone oftheIndianUniversities.
Afterresigningthislatter position,hedevotedhimselfto thereligiouslife,andfounded tworeligiouscongregations,one formenandtheotherfor women,bothofwhichfollow theancientruleofSt.Basil.
SubsequentlyhewasconsecratedBishopofthedissident churchandlaterwasinstalledas MetropolitanofBethany.
Hesoonbegantorealisethe errorofthedissidentchurch,and onbehalfofhimselfandsomeof theotherprelatesheprayedto bereceivedintotheCatholic Church.HisEminenceCardinalMooney,whileApostolic DelegatetotieEastIndies, madeallthearrangementsfor hisreception.lietold"TheRecord"ofhisfirstadvancesto-
wardsRome.Worriedinhis minaabouttheschism,hewrote ananonymouslettertothePope seekingguidanceandinforming Romethataconsiderablenumberofthedissidentprelates werethinkingofseekingreadmissiontotheflockofPeter, andaskingthePopeforinformationastothecorrectprocedure. Theletterhadtobeanonymous ashedidnotwanttocommit nimselfinanyway.Hegotin touch,however,.withaCatho licmissionaryandtoldhimwhat hehaddone,andrequestedhim togetintouchwithRome,as:tiringthemthattheletterwas "bonafide."Induetimethe answercame,couchedinvery carefulwording,andit,too,was anonymous."Yousee,"the Archbishopchuckled,"Iwasnot theonlypersonwhowasafraid iocommithimself."
