ThevisittothisStateofEamondeValerawasan eventbothofreligiousandcivicsignificance,whichshould haveconcernedagreatmanypeoplewhetherornotthey wereofIrishbirthordescent.Inhispersonallife,Mr DeValeragivesanexampleofrectitudeandprobitywhich isallthemoreunusualbecauseofitscontrastwiththe realitiesandthepopularconceptionofpoliticallife.Inas muchashehassucceededinintegratinghisreligiousprin- cipleswithhispoliticalphilosophy,withoutatthesame timelosinghistolerancetowardsthosewhodissentfrom eitherorboth,hehasprobablynoequalinthemodern world.Thesecretofhissuccesshaslain,undoubtedly. inhissincerityandsinglenessofpurpose.However,despitethistranslucenthonesty,hisadventtothisStatewas heraldedbybitterandill-consideredblastsfromlocal journals.Theyare,ofcourse,perfectlyfreetodisagree withdeValera'sadvocacyandwithIreland'scause;but thereis:somethingtobesaidforgettingthefactsright. andinthisrespectthenewspapersbetrayedaquiteun- usualignoranceofmodernhistory.
OfthediscourtesyoftheStateandcivicauthoritiestowardssuchadistinguishedvisitor,itisscarcelynecessary tospeak,fortheiromissionscontrast,humiliatinglyfor them,withthereceptionsaccordedMr.deValerabyboth CommonwealthandStateauthoritiesinVictoria.Ifthe graceofGodisillcourtesy,wemustnonethelessadmit thatgoodeffectsmayfollowfromboorishness.Whatwas lackinginthesavoirfaireofthesecularauthoritieswas morethancompensatedbythegenuinewarmthandspon- taneityoftheCatholicandIrishsectionsofthecommunity.Andtheslursofthepress,whichmanifestedaremarkablesimilarityofviewpoint,bothinthemorningand intheevening,servedMr.deValera'spurposeverywell indeed,astheygavehimthevantagepointofbeingableto forestallcriticism.Thiswasallthemorevaluableinthat bothpapersservedupfaithfullyallthetime-wornshibbolethsofslanderagainstIreland'scause,andtheIrish '.enderwasabletoreducethemtopulpwithoutanyapparentdifficulty
IfonerecallsthefargreateroccasiononwhichMr. deValensrepliedtoMr.Churchill'sattackswithadignity, adictionandatellingrestraint,whichwillremainclassical,theemphasisofthecontrastofspiritsinthelocal issuewillnotbesurprising.Whateverthebitternessand rancourofthepast,timehasmellowedatleasttheIrish nresentationofthecaseagainsttheBritishconspiracyin theNortherncounties.Thevenomisnowthesolepossessionoftheconspiratorsandoppressors.TheIrishpeopleandtheirveneratedhero,deValera,wantgoodrelationswithBritain.ItistheBritishalonewho,byperpetuatingtheinjusticeofPartition,standinthewayof finaland.harmoniousterminationoftheIrishQuestion. WhenitisconsideredhowtheBritishGovernmenthas broughtmoreglorytoitselfintherelinquishingoflarge portionsofitsEmpirethanintheiracquisition,itispassingstrangethatthetyrannyofIrishPartitionispermitted tocontinueattheirverydoors.Theyspeakwellandact boldlyfortherightsofsmallnations;theyseetheimperativeneedofretainingthefreedomofWesternEuropeand offusingthemintoadefensiveblocagainsttheSoviet. Surelythehigh-mindednessandlogicofthetimeswillinducethemsoontoagreetoaUnitedIreland.

Hedidnotthinkitwouldbe toleratedinAustraliaifone Statedesiredtocutitselfoff fromtheCommonwealthsimply becauseithadamajoritywhich disagreedwiththepoliticsofthe wholecountry.Itwouldbreakup anydemocracyifsuchathing wereallowedtohappen.Itsnaturalresultwouldbethateven townswouldthenwanttocut themselvesofffromotherareas withwhichtheydisagreed.

Ithasbeenreportedbyaprivate letter,accordingtothe"Advocate,"Melbourne,thatTherese Neumann,thefamousmysticof Konnersreuth,Bavaria,diedtowardstheendoflastyear.Therese NeumannwasborninApril.1898. In1918shewasseizedbyanillnesswhichresultedintotalblindness,paralysisoftheside,almost totaldeafnessandinabilityto swallowfoodbecauseofanabscess inthethroat.
Throughtheintercessionofthe LittleFlower,St.Thereseofthe ChildJesus,sherecoveredher sightafterfouryearsofblindness. Twoyearslaterherleftfootwas tobeamputatedbecauseofgangrenebutwasmiraculously curedbytheapplicationofroseleavesfromLisieux,theshrineof theLittleFlower.Twoweekslater, inMay,1916,onthedayofThe LittlePlotter'scanonisation,ThereseNeumannsawadazzlinglight andheardagentlevoicesaying thatshewouldwalkagain,would suffermuch,butwouldnotreceive theleastbenefitfromphysicians.
Astoldherinthevision,sheregainedtheuseofherleftleg,the paralysisandresultantdeformitiesdisappeared. IntheLentof1926shvhada visionofOurLord'sAgonyin Gethsemani,andreceivedawound inhersidefromwhichblood floweduntilnoonthenextFriday.
Forthesucceedingfiveweeksshe hadvisionsoftheSacredPassion onTuesdaysandFridays,during whichbloodflowedfromhereyes. Finally,onGoodFriday,wounds appearedonherhandsandfeet.

Iregrettohavetoreturnto thissubject.Theallegations thatareoccasionallyservedup tomefrom''TheRock"andallied publicationsaresometimesamusing,butmoreoftentheyleave mewithawoefulsenseofhavingconicincontactwiththeirrationalandstupidlymalicious. Therearesomanybetterthings todowithone'smindthanto employitintheconsiderationof suchlow-gradenonsense.However,sinceIamaskedtospeak aboutthissubjectbyacourteous andgood-willedlistener,Icannot refuse. TheOathoftheKnightsofSt. Columbus(sometimeswrittenSt. Columba),andusuallywithmentionofsomemysteriousfourth degree)isawell-knownfabricationapparentlyofAmericanongin.Itisamanifestlyabsurd andilliteratecomposition,and hasbeenshowntobebogusover andoveragain,.Inpointof fact,Ican'tseebyitsbogus natureshouldneeddemonstration,asthe"oath"issoidiotic astocarrywithititsownrefutation.Itmakesoutthatthe theKnightsofColumbus,awellknownAmericanreligiousorganisationforlaymen,swearun,onditionalsubjectiontothe PopeandtheGeneralofthe Jesuits,andpromisetoWagerelentlesswaronallProtestants, Masons,etc.,andtohang,burn, waste,boil,flay,strangle,ai.o buryalivealltheseinfamw4s heretics,andsoon.Usually thereissomereferencetoother playfullittleprankslikeripping upwomen'sbodiesandpouring inburningsulphur.TheKnights, itwouldseem,areaverydesperatelotoffellows,anditwould bewellnottomeetoneonadark night,forhemightsuddenlyproduceatubofoilandboilyouon thespot.Aladyrecentlywrote tomesayingthatoneofmycorrespondentswasthesortofman whomnoself-respectingsingle girlwouldinviteasecondtime toherhome.Iwonderwhatshe wouldsayabouttheseKnightsof Columbus,particularlythosein thefourthdegree?Probably wouldn'tgetinvitedeven thefirsttime. dcan'timagine anyself-respectingsinglegirl beinganxioustobefilledwith burningsulphur.
This"oath"hasaqueerhistory.Itcameintoprominence in1912inanAmericanelection campaign,inwhichaMr.EugeneBonniwell,whowasa KnightofSt.Columbus,wasdefeatedbyaMr.ThomasButler. Copiesofthe"oath"weredistributedinthousandsduringthe electioncampaign,inorderto
spoilMr.Bonniwell'schant,:.s. Accordingly,Mr.Bonniwellchallengedthevalidityofhisrival's election,anddrewattentionto thisspurious"oath"whichhad beenusedtodiscredithim. A committeeofenquirywasformed,anditsreportWIREincluded inthe"CongressionalRecords" underthedate,February15, 1913,whereitmaybeconsulted byanyoneinterestedTheCommitteereported:"Thiscommitteecannotcondemntoostrongly thepublicationofthefalseand hoellousarticlereferredtoin thepaperofMr.Bonniwell,and whichwasthespuriousKnights ofSt.Columbusoath,acopyof vthichisappendedtothepaper."
Mr.ThomasButler,inwhose interestthebogus'oath"was circulateddeclaredbeforethe Committee:"Thatthispaperwas circulatedIadmit,andregret.I hadnothingtododirectlyorindirectlywithitspublicationor circulation,andrecommended thatcopiesbedestroyed.Idid riotbelieveinitstruthfulness.1 believethatthecirculationof thispaper,knownastheKnights ofColumbusoath,notwithstandingmysincereefforttosuppress it,andspuriousasIbelieveitto be,wasofdisadvantagetome."
Thespuriouscharacterofthe "oaset"issowellattestedthat theKnightsofColumbusinAmericahaveagainandagainsecuredconvictionsforcriminallibel againstthoseresponsibleforthe printinganddistributionofthis document.Itmightbeaswell forthosewhohaveprocuredthe circulationofthe"oath"inAustraliatolieverylow,forthese AmericanCatholicgentlemenare nomoreinclinedtoendurecriminalcalumnynowthantheywere afewyearsago. BeforeIfinishthisratherdistastefultopic,IthinkIoughtto informanumberoflistenerswho, havebeenpuzzledattheimmun ityfromprosecutionwhich"The Rock"seemedtoenjoythata successfulactionhasrecently beenbroughtagainsttheproprietor,printerandpublisherofthis dreadfuljournalSometime agothesepeopleweresocarelessastoincludeinoneoftheir allegationsdetailswhichcould bechecked.ACatholicschool teacher,MissMaryMeaney,was concerned,andMissMeaneytook promptaction.Thedefendants didnotappearincourt,andsubmittednoevidenceinsupportof theirallegations.Theywere describedas"twodastardly scoundrels."byMr.Shand,the non-Catholic appearingfor MissMeaney.Damagestothe extentof£250weregivenagainst them.Iunderstand,too,that otheractionsagainstthemare pending. AfterwardsaCommunionBreakfastwasheldinthe Ladies'College,VictoriaSquare,bycourtesyoftheSisters ofMercy.DuringthisceremonytheannualreportwaspresentedbythePresidentoftheGuild,MissMollieBrody.

ButfortheCommuniststhesethingsrepresentanopportunitynottobelost...Consciouslyandwithdeterminatontheyareseekngtomakethebadworse,tointensify thesuffering.andincreasethedifficulties. Hewasamemberofthestaffof the"Daily*Worker''inLondonBritain'sCommunistdaily-and torthepastfiveyearshasbeen itsNewsEditor.Everyweekit washisjobtoreadtheCatholic press,anditwasdoingthisthat lustmadehimaskhimselfabout CatholicismLastmonthheresignedfromtheCommunist Partyandplacedhimselfunder instructionintheintheCatho,icFaith.Hiswife-aCommunistforthepast10years-is havinginstructionsfromhim.
InBritainandmostofthe countriesoftheWestittakes theformofoppositiontoMarshallAid;workingagainsteffortstoincreaseproauction,by exploitingindustrialgrievance's andunderminingmorale,encouragingthepopualtiontobehaveas thoughtherewere,infact,no economiccrisisdemandinghard workandself-sacrificefromall.
Itisknownthat,withoutAmericanaid,3,000,000unemployed inBritainwouldhavetobeanticipated,yettheCommunists, whoclaimtohavethecauseof thecommonpeopleatheart, dailyattacktheMarshallPlanin theirspeeches,publications,and byeverymeansintheirpower.
Whoarethepeoplewhoinitiatesuchpolicies,andwhydo theydoso?Todismissthem andtheiraimsaswhollyevilis notenough.Theiractionsonly becomeexplicableifweundesstandtheirpolicies.Itwas when,asaresultofbeingonthe insideoftheParty'sleadership, ietoknowtheirrealmotves thatIdecidedthatIcouldno longersupportthePartyof whichIhadbeenamemberfor 20years. WhenRussiapersuadedher satellitesinEasternEuropeto refuseMarshallAidfortherestorationoftheirshatteredeconomies,sheknewshewasgambnnginabigway.Ontheone hand,shecouldnotaffordtolet thembenefitbythePlan,forfear theyshouldcomeunderthepoliticalinfluenceoftheWest,aria sobecomedissatisfiedwiththe restrictionsoflibertytheymust tolerateundertheirCommunl,!-controlledgovernments.
Ontheotherhand,itwas equallyclearthatwithoutsuch aidtheirpost-warrecovery wouldbesloweddownwhilstthat ofthedemocracieswouldbe speededup.Insuchasituation itwouldonlybeaquestionof timebeforethepeopleofthesatellitecountriesbeganmakingun- favourablecomparisonsandcondemningtheirgovernmentsfor havingallowedthemselvestobe persuadedintosuchapolicy.
WHERESTRIKESCOMEIN.
ButthiswaswheretheCommunistPartiesthroughoutthe worldcouldcometotheiraid.
IfthestandardoflifeofEasternEuropecouldnotberaised quickly,atleastthatoftheWest couldhespeedilydepressedby meansofagitations,strikesand. ifnecessary,industrialsabotage.
So,insteadofco-operatingin thesolutionofpost-warproblemsastheyhadbeendoing sincetheendofthewar,Communistseverywhereswitchedto enexactlyoppositeline:thatis themotivebehindthelong
drawn-outstrikesinAustralia, theCommunist-inspiredunrestin ItalyandFrance,andthedroppingofallcampaignsforincreasedproductioninBritain. Thedecisionherewasoperatedquitesuddenly.AsNews Editorofthe"DailyWorker:Britain',onlyCommunistdaily paper,Iwasresponsibleforits campaign,forincreasedoutput. IwasproudofthejobIwas doing,whichwasshowingdefiniteresults.Then,onenight,we weretoldthenew,linewewere totake.Inoneeditionofthe paperwepublishedastorydesignedtoraiseindustrialmorale,butbythenextithadbeen thrownnutasbeingnolonger politicallycorrect.
anyjustificationfortheamount ofpublicitytheyreceive?
Thestrongestweaponinthe handsoftheCommunistleaders istheunquestioningloyaltyof theirfollowers,whoaretireless or,theParty'sbehalf.Relativelyfewstandthepacefor Storethanafewyears,but whiletheydolasttheycontributeanamazingamountofsnergyanddevotiontotheCause.
ThePartyisconstantly,recruitingmembers,andatthe sametimelosingothersbecause ofthepaceatwhichtheyare driven:this,inPartycircles,is knownasthe"turnover,"andrepresentsasmanyas25percent. ofthetotalmembershiplostannually.Thosewholeave,however,usuallydosohavinglost anyreligiousbeliefstheyever held,and,inmostcases,havinc becomecompletelycynicalwith totallymaterialisticoutlookon life.
ThePartymembershipismade upofapreponderanceofskilled workers(engineersarethelerestsinglegroup,minersand transportworkerscomenext),a rathersmallnumberofunskillet workers,asurprisinglylarge numberofmiddleclass"intellectuals,"andsmallpercentageof housewives.Itisnoexaggeration tosaythattheyareamongthe keenest,mostintelligentand mostpromisingintheirvarious spheres.
NEGATIVEAN'Isl-tOMMITNISMUSELESS.
Thepeoplewhooperatesuch decisionswithoutquestionbelievethatthewholefutureofrevolutionarysocialismdependson Russia'scontinuedsurvivalasa CommunistState.Toachieve thattheywillpayanyprice.
ButeventsinEasteniEurope andRussia'spolicysincethewar convincedmeatleastthatthere wasnothingleftinCommunism ojustifysuchapricebeingpaid inhumanmiseryandprotracted suffering.
TheCommunistPartyisone ofthesmallerEuropeanparties ofitskind.NumericallyIts strengthisonlysome40,000 members,buttheCommunist PartiesofFranceandItaly,with theirvastmemberships,areina positionconstantlytothreaten theirgovernmentswithdefeat, eitherthroughtheballot-box,by meansofwidespreadstrikes,by coups,orbyopeninsurrection.
Britain'sCommunistsareinno suchposition.AtthelastGeneralElectiontheirrepresentation wasincreased100percent.-but inpracticethismeantonlyarise fromonetotwoM.P.'sinthe HouseofCommons.
YetCommunistactivitiesare oneverybody'slips.ThepowerfulLabourPartyconductsanalloutcampaignagainstthem,and theGovernmenthasdecidedto makeacompletedeparturefrom traditonbyremovingStateemnloyeesinpositionsoftrustwho areknowntohaveCommunist sympathies.
Whatistheexplanationfor thisseemingparadox?Isthere
ThesuccessoftheCommunists inthefactoriesandunionshas itsbasisinthefactthatthey arerecognisedassuchbytheir workmatesandfellowmembers. Theyhavearecordofservice andwillingnessandabilityto fightwhichhasputthemwhere theyare.Tooverlookthisfact istotallytomisunderstandthe problem,andapurelynegative anti-Communismwhichdoesnot takeaccountofit,isboundto -howfewresults. Communiststraditionallyhave knownwheretheystoodonall importantissuesoftheday. TheirMarxisttheoryandconstantdiscussionofcurrenttacticsensurethattheyareinunison.Themainstrengthofthe Communistsisinthetrade unions,wheretheyhaveaninfluenceoutofallproportionto theirnumbers.SeveralofBritain'sleadingtradeunionfigures areknownCommunists,and thereareotherswhoarerecognisedasclosefellow-travellers, hutallofthemrealiseto-day thattheirpositionmayshortly becomesomewhatinsecure,for non-Communistshaveatlast wakeneduptothequiteindefensiblepositionwhichhasobtainedforsomeyears.
Atypicalexampleisthatof the600,000strongNational UnionofMineworkers,whielt hasforyearsbeenpopularly supposedtobeentirelyinthe pocketoftheCommunists.Eves thenon-Communistsinitsleadershin,believingthattherewasa tremendouspressurefromCommunistsinitsrankandfile,identifiedthemselveswithCommunist-sponsoredpolicy.Itsgeneralsecretary,ArthurHorner,is alsoamemberoftheCommunist PartyExecutiveCommittee.
ThentheLabourParty'sGeneralSecretary,MorganPhillips. launchedacampaigntocombat Communistinfluenceinthe trade unions.
Thenon-Communistsonthe andfoundthattheyrepresented Miners'executivegottogether amajorityiftheyactedinconcord,andwherepreviouslyonly theCommuniseshadactedtogether,nowtheiropponentsdid thesame.Inthreemonthsthe mythofCommunistdomination hasbeendestroyed.
Theprocessisonewhichmay spreadtootherimportantunion. wthich,atthemoment,areMill inthehandsoftheCommunists. Similarmethodsarealsolikely tobeadoptedinothercountries whereamoreorlessidentical positionobtains.
