THEIMMACULATECONCEPTION.-Murillo. titleofOurLady'sinhersmall hometown.Why,then,didOur LadysaytoBernadette:"Iam theImmaculateConception"?
WecannotdoubtthatOurLady chosethisnewtitleinorderto expressherpleasureinthedecisionoftheChurchtomakeacceptanceofthisdoctrineuniversalamongthefaithful.Itwas nothingnew,ofcourse,forCatholicstobelievethattheMother ofGodvaasconceivedwithout thestainoforiginalsin.This hadbeenreadilyandwidelybelievedforcenturies;butthe law-makersoftheChurchhad nowdeclared(in1854)thatall CatholicsMUSTbelievethis; thuswhatwaspreviouslyonly acommonbeliefnowbecamean articleoffaith,justasbinding asbeliefintheBlessedSacrament.TheChurchhadsettne sealofauthorityonthisbelief, andhenceforththerewasno roomforeventheslightest doubt.OurBlessedMother musthavebeenhighlypleased withthisfreshhonourbestowed onherbytheChurchfoundedby herDivineSon,andshegavea signofherapprovalwhenshe saidtothehumblechild,BernadetteSoubirous,in1858:"Iam theImmaculateConception."
Now,justwhatdoesthistitle mean?'Immaculate"means
