Wednesday,14th.inst,was theoccasionofgreatexcitement atBoys'Town,Bindoon.Itwas areallybigoccasion.Inthe wordsofBrotherKeeney,"itwas thegreatestdayBindoonhadyet seen."Itwassobecausethe SistersofSaintBenedict,from NewNorcia,wereinstalledat Boys'Town.AndBrotherKeaney'swordswerethetrueand sincereexpressionofhisbigheartedappreciationandofthe realworthoftheBenedictine Sisters,bothinthemselvesand inrelationtothenewworkthey havesonoblyundertaken.Their longrecordofeconomy,efficiency,wholeheatteddevotedness andmotherlysolicitudeatSt. Joseph'sOrphanage,NewNorcia,augursmosthappilyforthe

AftertheGospel,Rev.Father JeromeDocherty,O.S.B.,addressedtheboys.Hesaidtheir gatheringwasamosthappyone, andfortworeasons.Firstly, itwasthebeautifulFeastof theirgreatPatron.Secondly, theywerewelcomingtheSistersofSt.Benedict,whowere comingtothemfromSt.Joseph's,NewNorcia,toSt.Joseph's,Bindoon,andonSt.Jos. eph'sownday.Thiswassufficienttosuggestmanythoughts ofloveandgratitude;butthe occasiondemandedawordconcerningdevotiontoSt.Josepn.

"IfIvtseretotellyouthatsuch devotionwasnotnecessary,and thatSt.Josephwouldnotbb jealousofourdevotiontoMary, youwouldbeshocked.ButI didn'tsaythat.Ontheother hand,ifIsaid:'Youmusthave devotiontoSt.Joseph,'you wouldaskmetotellyousome-

likeit,strongmbodyandstrong insoulandmindandwill.This iswhat1wantyoutoremember mostofall.Loveyourwork andyouwillbecomehealthyin bodyandstronginsoul.Half thetroubleinAustraliacomes frommenlovingnotworkbut iiioney.

AfterHighMasstheFathers andSisterswenttoinspectthe Convent.Althoughnotyet completed,andmanyadditions stillhavetobemade,everybody waspleasedandsurprisedatthe appointments.Forthepresent onlytwooftheSistershave takenuptheirquarters,with threewell-trainednativegirls fromNewNorcia. Therestofthemorningwas spentinmeetingtheBrothers andtheboys.Thetimepassed verypleasantlytilllunchwas served.At2.30theboystreatedustoaconcert.Weenjoyed hearingtheEnglish!eddiessinging""TheBritishGrenadiers. TheIrishboyssang"Songsmy MotherTaughtMe."TheScstch boyswarbled"TheBluebellsof Scotland."

HisHolinessthePope,addressingthePontificalAcademy ofSciencesontheinauguration ofitstwelfthyear,calledfor pacificuseofatomicenergy.

LouisGargan,hesaid,wasa railwayworker,anagnosticwho jeeredatCatholics,ridiculedthe grottoofthemiraclesandlaughedattheideaoftheBlessed Mother.Onedayanaccident

appreciationoftheBenedictine Sisters,hemightseematurncoat;buthedidn'tnandbeing oneinfavourofSt.Scnolastica. Morethanamillionpilgrims areexpectedtovisitRomeduringtheHolyYearof1950,as againstapproximately800,000in thelastHolyYear,in1925,says aC.I.P.messagefromRome.

Aspecialcommitteeforthe preparationshasbeenestablishedandwillsoonopenofficeson ViaVenetounderthedirectionof itsVice-President,Dr.DomenicoFrancini,whoisalsoExecutiveDirectorofthePermanent VaticanOfficeforPilgrimagesto Rome.

Thecommitteehasexpressed theopinionthatin1950therewill befewerpilgrimsfromEuropean countriesthanin1925,andparticularlyfewfrombeyondthe "ironcurtain,"butthattherewill heagreatmanymorefrom NorthandSouthAmericathan onanypreviousoccasion.

The"FreedomTrain"isa shrinebearingthemosttreasuredmemoriesofAmericanhistory, includingsuchpricelessdocumentsastheoriginalsoftheDeclarationofIndependence;of Lincoln'sGettysburgspeech,and Washington'sfarewell.AsquadronofArmyplanesflewover thecityonSt.Patrick'sDay

Informationleakingoutof thenowtightlycurtainedCzechoslovakiarevealsthattheCorn munistcoupd'etatwascarried outatthedirectordersofthe Cominformandagainstthe wishesoftheCzechCommunists themselves,whobelievedthat theycouldachievetheirpurposes ,throughParliamentarymeains Theirideawasto"capture" thecountryandthenturnitinto aholidaycentreforcomrades fromotherEuropeancountries, Britainincluded.Miners'leadersandotherworkers'officials fromBritainduringthepasttwo yearsvisitedCzechoslovakiaand Warerecentlydiscussingthebest meansoforganisingholidaysto thecountryofBritishtrade unionists.

ButlastsummerCommunists leadersvisitedJugoslaviaand Hungaryanddiscoveredthatdevelopmentsin Czechoslovakia werefrowneduponbyTito,RakosiandotherinfluentialReds. Moscow,too,wasnotpleased.

"Thencamethemeetinginthe Silesianhuntinglodge,"saysa "CatholicHerald"specialcorrespondent."FromthismeetingtheCominformemerged. 'Thereitwasdecidedthatinthe absenceoftheCommunistInternationalmanyblundershadbeen madewhichnowhadtocease. WiththeconclusionoftheItalianelections,themost lecisivecrisisforpeaceinourtimeshaspassed,andthe initialstepstowardsvictoryhavebeensuccessfullynegotiated.TheSovietadvanceovertheprostratebodyof Europehasbeenatoncemoreswiftandmoreominous thantheputschesoftheNazis.Nations,demoralisedby defeat,hungryandexhausted,havebecomeeasypreyfor theseductionsofMarxism.Wheretherehasbeenre:=istance,ithasbeencircumventedbytrickeryorforce,and quelledatlastbythefiringsquadorprisonbars.More thanhalfofEuropehassuccumbedinthiswayinlessthan threeyearsfromthe"victory,"andtheyokeofthe"liberators"wasinfinitelylesstolerablethanthecaptivityby theFascists.Thetempoofthisnewbarbarianinvasion wasterrific,andtoapublicnurturedonthenewspaperpap of"gloriousallies"andthemisunderstoodmotivesofthe Soviet,theexistenceofanakedimperialismalreadysolidlyentrenchedandboundlessinambitionandruthlessness, camesuddenlywiththeblindingflashofarevelation.The revulsionofpopularfeeling,lateasithasoccurred,con'usedasitisinitsmotivesandintent,isstillofgreat valuebecauseithascomeintime.

ThereareyetagreatmanypeoplewhodatetheascendancyofCommunismfromtheendofthelastwarand whoviewtheItalianelectionsasthefirstgreattrialof strengthbetweenEuropeancivilisationandtheforcesof lissolution.Thatviewisunhistorical,becausethefirst tattlewasjoinedandwonbyGeneralFrancoinSpain. HadSpaingoneunderinthattest,thepoliticalgroupings ofthesecondWorldWarwouldhavebeenradicallydifferentand,butforthepoliticalineptitudeofnationalleadersandthegrossbetrayalofitstrustbythePress,the WestwouldhaverealisedtenyearsearlierthefundanatureofthestrugglewhichEuropeandtheworld wouldhavetoface.However,theelectionsinItalyare sfthehighestsignificance.Theyrepresentprobablythe f.rstfreeballotinanyEuropeancountrywheretheCommunistPartyisinstrength.Theyputatermtothe swindlingdemocraticpretensesoftheKremlin,andmarkedanadamantinequalityinthehithertoflabbywillsofthe democraticAllies.Thepromiseofmaterialaidunderthe, MarshallPlanandthepresenceofadequatearmedforces, undoubtedlyhelpedtheelectoralissue,butthesolemn moralauthorityoftheHolyFather'swarningandthereiolutionoftheVanguardistscannotbeignored.

ThevictoryinItalyisnot,however,toberegarded ascompleteandfinal.Itisbuttheinauguralmoveina processwhosehappyconsummationwillcallforwiseand ,irmleadership,andforstabilityandloyaltyamongthepeopleatlarge.TheCommunistshavedemonstratedyet againtheircontemptfordemocraticprocesses,andhave statedcategoricallythattheywillnotaccepttheclear expressionofthewilloftheItalianpeople.Sincethey havefailedtosecuredominationbyconstitutionalmeans, theywillfollowtheordinaryPartylineoforganisingecor_omicdisruptionofthenation,andbysenselessstrikesand go-slowtacticswillendeavourtoignitetheflamesofcivil war.Butthereisreasontohopefromtheelectionresults thattheItalianpeoplearealivetotheperilforthemselves andforEuropeiftheRedsgaintheascendancy,andthat theywilltakecarethatthefateoftheirneighboursdoes notbecometheirs.WithItalysecured,,itmaybepossible toholdthewobblingmoraleoftheFrench.Ifthiscan bedoneindtheeconomicself-helpprogrammelaunched withoutdelay,itmaybepossibletosettheWestagainon itsfeetagainstthedaywhenitwillhelpintheliberation theEast.

Forthetimebeingexpressions ofmutualunderstandingandlove markofficialSoviet-Finnishrelations.AdelegationoftheHelsinkiGovernment,headedbyproRussianPremierPekkalaand MinisteroftheInteriorLeino, visitedMoscowonthe30th.anniversaryoftheoccasionofthe celebrationoftheOctoberRevolution.OnNovember17,after theMinisters'returnhome,an officialproclamationdescribed theatmosphereof"mutualunderstanding"whichanimatedthe

ThehugereparationstoRussia,withwhichFinlandissaddled,isbeingusedasatoolfor politicalpurposes.Moscowis skilfullydanglingbeforetheimpoverishedpopulationapromse thatthereparationpaymentfor 1947maybecurtailedby10per cent.iftheFinnishpeopleare "good."Sincewarreparations absorbabout20percent.ofthe totalnationalproduction,thisindeedisatemptingbait.

Inordertopaytheserepara tions,almostallindustrialproductsgoforexports.InHelsinki,whichpossessesoneofthe world'slargestporcelainfactories,cupsareunobtainabit.There isalsoacompletelackoffootwearandtextiles.Longlinesof peopleformtobuydarning thread,saccharineandoil.In theseconditionsanyalleviatonof theheavyreparationburden wouldbewelcome.

WhatFinlandfears,however, arethepoliticaltermsRussia mayimposeinreturnforsucha concession.Verylikelyoneof theconditionswouldbethefurtherintegrationofFinnisheconomiclifewiththatoftheSoviet Union.AlreadythetradeagreementsignedonDecember1providesforafurtherincreaseof themutualexchangeofgoodsin 1948and1949.

ThustheFinnishpeopleare walkingapoliticaltightrope, hopingthattheirhardworkand moralresistancetoCommunist penetrationwillpreserveatleast theirpresentdegreeofindependence.Finlandissometimes comparedtoCzechoslovakia,as thetwocountriesareonthe peripheriesoftheSovietsphere ofinfluenceandaretreatedina similar,thatis,somewhatmore liberalway.InCzechoslovakia theprocessofpurgeshasalready begun.Itremainstobeseen howllongFinland,theonlySoviet-controlledcountrynota memberoftheCominrorm,will bespared.

Finlandistheonlycountryin EasternEuropewhichuntilnow hasbeenpermittedtoescapefull Sovietsubjugation.According toreliableinformation,however, herturniscoming,awaitingonly thecompletionofthepurgesof theBalkans,PolandandCzechoslovakia.Itisalmostcertain thattheFinnishcrisiswillcome beforetheparliamentaryelectionsduetotakeplacetothe springorearlysummer.

Russiacannotputoffforlong thesuppressionofwhatremains ofFinnishliberties,because there,asineveryothercountry notfullydominated,Communist influenceisonthedecline.The communalelectionsonDecember7wereadisappointmentfor MoscowtContrarytoCommunistexpectations,theelectionsresultedintheirdefeat,whilethe right-wingpartiesgainedground.

Chambermusicisoneofthesincerestformsofmusicandnothing eaanearnestapproachwill bringtoitsplayingthatsense ofauthenticity.Eventhelistenermustbepossessedofsufficientearnestnessorthemusic willpassovernotunderstoodand almostunheard.Bothofthe workswerenewtome(wehear sofewcellists),andthereisalwaysalittleexcitementinhearingsomethingnew.Thereis Alwaysthechancethatonemay discoversomethinginitthatrespondstosomeyetperhapsundiscoveredmusicaldesire.I foundmyselfmuchinsympathy withalotthatBeethovenhadto sayintheAMajorSonata.The playersgaveitwarmthand firmness,thoughfromwhereI wassitting,thecellobenefitedby amplification,whiletherianodid not.Theresultwas*tatIfound myselflisteningtothecelloal mosttotheexclusionofthe piano.That,ofcourse,isthe worstpossiblewaytolistentoa chambercombination,andinthis casethepianistwasnonegligibleartist.

WhileshewasatLoreto,she playedforthefamouspianist, PercyGrainger,whodeclared 'mphaticallythatshemustbe sentabroadtostudywiththe greatestmasters.Shehadin themeantimewonallthedistinctionsthatboththeUniversity AndTrinityCollegeexaminationshadtooffer.AcommiteewasformedinPerthtocontinueraisingfunds,andeventudlyshewassentabroad.The storyofhereventualresounding successiswellknown,butwhat isnotsufficientlyrealisedisthe factthatwhenacommitteeis formedtosendsomebrilliant studentawaytostudy,their workisnotdonethemomentthe tudenthasdeparted.ItiscertainthatEileenJoycedidnot haveenoughmoneytoseeher through,andthatwithdogged perseverancesheprobablyoverworkedandwasnotsufficiently caredforwhilstsodoing.Her parentswerenotabletoanswer herappealsinanythinglike adequacy,andthewayshetenaciouslyhungontothetaskshe ,etherselftodo,isamoreimportantfactorinherlifeasan artistthananythingthathap nenedafterwardswhen(abril tientsuccess)everyonewa

AlthoughIenjoyedtheBeethovenvariations,IthinkI shouldhavelikedbettertohave heardanothersonataorsuiteby amoderncomposer.Idon'tlike tieingjerkedbacktoBeethoven againafterhearingRichard Strauss,evenwithanintervalin between.NotthatIdon'tthink chatBeethoveneisamuchgreatercomposerthanStrauss,but fromtheprogrammebuilding pointofview,forme,itisamis'ake.Itis,however,avery charmingwork,andanyway,Mozart'sthemeisoftheverystuff thatlovelymusicalthoughtis made.Bothartistsplayedit verywell,andonceIsettleddown toit,itwasasatisfyingmusical experience.

Attileendoftheprogramme OttiVeitplayedagroupofsolos. MyfavouritewastheBachAdagio;thebestplayedwasFaure's "Elegie,"andtheleastwell knowntheVanGoen'sScherzo. Thelimitedamountofmusical literatureforthecelloleavesthe playerlittleinitiativeinthecompilingofasologroup.

ALICEMALLON.

TheotherartistfortheeveningwasAliceMallon,Whoisal.naysawelcomecontributorto anyprogramme.Shealways choosesinterestingsongs,andinfusesplentyofwarmthinto them.Shewasinexcellentform, andItookparticularnoteofthe firmnessandroundnessofher highernotes.Thelistenerenjoyssharingthesinger'ssecurity.Schubert,Reger,andStrauss sharedagroupofLieder,with Dvorak's"SongsMyMother TaughtMe"(whichIalways wishIwerehearingforthefirst time).AFrenchgroupwas madeofsongsthatthegramophonehavemadefamiliar,and anexcursionintotherealmsof CanadianFolkSong,which broughtustwoexquisiteexamplesofmusicaldelicacy. Hetravelledtheroads ofFrancefromvillagetovillage,andhisperformancewas giveninthepnblicstreets.He woulddanceandsing,make jokes,dohisacrobaticturns andhisjugglingtricksforthe littiecrowdsthatgatheredabout him.Afewpennieswerehis onlyreward.Sometimes,when therewasafairoracarnival, hedidbetter.

Onedayheenteredatown wherethepeoplewerekeepinga holiday.Oflatehehadmade verylittlemoney,fortheweatherhadbeenwet,andnoone wouldstandintheraintowatch thepoortumbler.Hewasvery hungryliehopedthetownspeoplewouldpatronisehim.It wa,abeautifulday,therainall gone.However,thepeople weresobentontheattractions attheboothsandstalls,sobusy eatinganddrinkinganddancing,thathardlyanybodymintled thepoor,hungrytumbler,innis shabbymotley."

Roma'slipswerehalf-opened toaskaquestion,whenthePoet explainedtheword.

DearAuntBessy,-Another littleletterwhileIfeellike writing.Ifeelallalivesince wehadthelovelyrainonEaster Monday,andthepaddocks,too, haveagreensmileonthem.

Iseeby"TheRecord"that anotherofourearlyPerth friendshaspassedaway,inthe personofMissMcArdle.They willsoonbeallgone.Itwas herbrother'shorseandcarriage thattookmyhusbandandme toournewhomeinthecountry thedayweweremarried,on August18,1884. Therewere nomotor-carsor"bicyclesbuilt fortwo"inthosedays.

Now,Aunty,Iwasjustthinkingbackhowinterestingitwould betoknowifthereisanyone livinginPerthto-daywhocan rememberseeingfifteencamels walkinginunderthePerthTows, Hallandsittingontheground floortobeunloaded.Thiswas inthemiddleoftheseventies. ThepartyconsistedofMr.Giles andhismenandcamels.They hadcomeoverlandfromAdelaidetoPerth.Therewasgreat exci'ementthatdayfortownand countrypeople. Thecamels camedowntheGuildfordRoad, nowcalledAscotRoad. The ladiesandgentlemenrodeoutto meetthemontheirprancing horses. Theyturnedoffthe roadtowaitforallPerthand hipfamilytowelcomethem withthevolunteerband,about half-a-milefromtheendofthe bridge.Thenthebandturned andwalkedbeforethecamels playing"TheCamelsarecoming,hurrah,hurrah,"overthe bridge,alongAdelaideTerrace andSt.George'sTerrace,around theoldG.P.O.,andinunderthe TownHall.Mymotherand brothercameovertwelvemiles inandbacktoseethem.They didnotgointothehall"through theeyeofaneedle."There wasalargeslidingdoorfacing BarrackStreet.Thisistheone theywentthrough.Thereused tobeanotherfacingHayStreet, butbothhavesincebeenbrickedup.
