January31st.ofeachyearmarkstheclosingdateofthe currentfinancialyearforthePontificalMissionsAidSocieties, anditisgratifyingtobeabletoreportanothersuccessfulyear. Itishearteningtonoticethesteadyprogressthatisbeingmade, andtorecognisethefactthatourCatholicpeoplearebecoming Missionminded.OurCatholicfaithisaheritageofwhichwe shouldbeveryproud,anddeepdowninourheartsweshouldbe possessedofastrongdesiretohelpintheworkofevangelising theworld.

ThePropagationoftheFaith isaninstitutionwhichshould playanactivepartinthelifeof everyparish.Itcanbeagreat sourceofinspiration,givingits membersarealappreciationof thefaiththatisinthem.Itis essentialforCatholicstorealise thattheyaremembersofaDivinelyfoundeduniversalChurch. Theirfaithisnotanindividual affair,noristhepropagationof theCatholicfaithamatterof choiceorindifferencetotheindividualCatholic.Asmembers oftheTrue,UniversalChurch, asprofessedfollowersofChrist, theyhaveanobligationtodoall intheirpowertobringabout theconversionoftheworld.The commandofOurDivineLordto evangelisethewholeuniverseappliestothelaypersonaswellas tothereligious.Thisistheera ofthelayapostle,thisistheage, whentheChurchMilitantmust besolidlyunited,defending whole-heartedlyCatholictruths andprinciplesagainstallopposition.Itismostappropriate toconsiderthePonticalMission AidSocietiesasamoderncrusade,embracingyoungandold, buttoachievethemaximumof successitmustbeall-embracing initsmembership,itmustbe steadfastanddeterminedinits objective,itmustbeconstantin itsassaults.

Yearbyyearthemembership ofthePropagationoftheFaith hassteadilyincreasedinthis Archdiocese,andweliveinhopes thatthedayisnotfardistant wheneverypracticalCatholicwill belistedamongstitsmembers. AnydayourCatholicloyalties maybetested.Itcouldhappen thatourmenandwomenwillbe confrontedwithanindustrialor politicalcrisis,inwhichtheywill beforcedtonominatetheirallegiance-toGodorCaesar.Itis tobehopedthatbythattime theirapostoliczealforthespread ofsoulswillhedeveloped,that theywillbeabletoacceptwith sincereloyaltythedirectionsof awiseandprovidentMother Church.

messagefromPopePiusXII.,%auntycommendingthe effortsoftheUnitedNationsonbehalfofthehungrychildren oftheworld,hasrecentlybeenreceivedbytheUnitedNations InternationalChildren'sEmergencyFund,atLakeSuccess,New York,fromMsgr.GiovanniBatistaMontini.thePapalacting SecretaryofState.Thesendingofthemessagemarkedthecommencementofchild-feedingoperationsinRomebytheUnited NationsInternationalChildren'sEmergencyFund,butitcovered "withoutdistinctionallneedychildreninallareasaffectedby thewar."

TheI.C.E.F.,whichhassofar receiveditsfinancialsupport mainlyfromgovernmentsand theresidualassetsofUNRRA, willcarryitscausetothepeopleoftheworldinFebruary, whentheglobalcampaignofthe UnitedNations'AppealforChildrengetsunderway.

TheItalianprogrammeofthe UnitedNatios'Children'sFund providedforthesupplementary feedingof700,000childrenand pregnantandnursingmothers. Althoughoperationshaveonly juststartedinRome,about250,000childrenand30,000mothers inotherpartsofItalywerealreadyreceivingaidthroughthe fund.

TheFund'soperationsarenow underwayinnineEuropean countries(Austria,Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia,Finland,Greece, Hungary,Italy,PolandandRumania),andwillsoonbeginin Albania,France,andYugoslavia. TheprogrammeforChinaisnow beingdeveloped.

OnJanuaryZ9,theSistersofSt.Anthony'sConventof MercycelebratedtheGoldenJubileeoftheirfoundationinCool- gardie.ThecelebrationswereworthyoftheSisters,whocame fromtheConventofMercy,Adelaide,inJanuary,1898,toestablishthe(hideroftheSistersofMercyontheGoldfields.

SolemnHighMasswascelebrated,atwhichRt.Rev.MonsignorMoss,PP.,representing HisGrace,presided.Rev.Father C.Stinsonwascelebrant,assistedbyRev.FatherMcCarthyas deacon,andRev.H.Kellyas sub-deacon.VeryRev.Father P.Carmodywasmasterofceremonies.AlsopresentwereVery Rev.FatherW.Joyce,C.SS.Rs Rev.Dr.E.Sullivan,Rev. FathersCunningham,Ahern; O'Leary,andDunne.Thealtar wasbeautifullydecorated,and theMass,"CumJubilo,"alas

Inlikemannerallwhoare"religiouslyminded"notonlyrejoicewhentheyhavereceived gracesandblessingsfromGod, butwishalsothatothersshould joinwiththeminpraisingGod andgivingthankstoHim.

Thustheroyalpsalmist, David,whenhehadescapedfrom deathatthehandsofAchis,King ofGeth,givethankstoGodin thethirty-thirdpsalm(from winchIhavetakenmytext)and promisedtopraiseandblessHim atalltimes,andheinvitedall thepeopletojoinwithhimin praisingGod,saying:"0magnifytheLordwithmeandletus extolhisnametogether."

So,too,theSistersofMercy, afterhavingcompletedfifty yearsoflabourforGodandfor soulsinthisparishofCoolgardie,arefiledwithjoyatthe goodtheyhavebeenenabledto doduringthepastfiftyyears, andtheyhaveinvitedus,priests andpeople,torejoicewiththem onthegoodthathasbeenaccomplished-astheyrealisethat everybestgiftisfromabove, comingdownfromtheFatherof lights;theyhavewishedusto joinwiththemespeciallyIn praisingGodandgivingthanks toHimforallthegiftsand gracesthatHehasbestowedon themandonthechildrenentrustedtotheircareduringthe pastfiftyyears.Thuseach oneoftheSisterssaystous,as Davidsaidtohispeople:"0magnifytheLordwithme;andlet (ContinuedonPage14.)

ThemurderofMahatmaGandhiwasallthatthepressclaimedandagreatdealmorebesides. ForgreataswastheMahatma's politicalinfluenceinIndia'srelationswiththeworldatlargeand inherowndomesticaffairs,it washisother-worldlinessWhich wasthemainspringofallhisactivity.Hehimselfclaimedthat religiongavemeaningtohislife, whilepoliticswerehisavenues foritsexpression.ForGandhi wasmosttobereckonedwith whenintheopinionandphrase ofthesecularistshewas''doing nothing."Hewasavitaland startlingillustrationofMr.T.S. Eiiott'seclaimthatthefundamentalneedofthemodernworld isnotactionbutcontemplation.

Or,toputthematteryetmore accurately,Gandhiproved,toa largelymaterialisticworldthat contemplationisthehighestform ofactivity.Gandhiwasnota Christian,butonmorethanone occasionheexpressedsincereadmirationfortheworkChristian missionariesweredoingforhis people.Hestandsinourtime insomethingofthesameposition asthenoblepagansofantiquity, forwhomtheFathersofthe Churchprofesssuchadmiration, especiallyPlatoandAristotle. Likethemhereliedonthearms ofthespiritratherthanupon thecontrivancesofmen.

Thebasicdoctrinesofhislife wereprayer,mortificationand theeschewingofviolence.It istruethatnoneofthesecanbe appreciatedinafullChristian sense,becausetheywerenot promptedbyChristianmotives nordirectedtoChristianends.

Butforallthathisspirituallife wasnarrowedandcircumscribed byHinduism,MohandasGandhi wasofrealsaintlinessaccording tohislights,andnonecandeny thefervourofthesincerityhe inspired.Itwasnotwithout reasonthathisfollowersgave himthetitleMahatma(Great Soul).Eventhoughhedidnot andcouldnotachievetheheights ofthatfullspiritualdevelopment opentothemeanestChristian, hislifewasatoncearebukeand ashiningexampletoaworld whichistryingtolivebybread alone.Ifhehasnoothertitle togreatness,atleasthewillbe numberedamongthegreatones ofhistoryforhisinsistenceof theprimacyofthespiritualover thematerial,andofthingseternaloverthingstemporaland empheral.

butofthemostmomentousissue ofourtimesandperhapsofall historythatheshouldhavebeen struckdownbythehandofa Communist.Allhislifehehad preachedandpractisedthedoctrineofnon-violence,whichin Christianparlanceiscalledthe virtueofmeekness.Heaven aloneknowsthesavagerynad bloodshedhewardedoffbyhis spiritualsignofcontradiction. 1etintheendhefellavictimto thelogicaloutcomeofthatphilosophywhich,seeingmanasa brutenature,placesitshopein violencetoachievehissubjection andthinksthatindeathhedies likeadog.Itispreciselyhere thatCommunismismakingits mostdecisivemistake,inthatit ignoresthesurvivalofgreatmen throughouthistory.Gandhiis notdead,norMihailovich,nor Petkov,norStepinac.Russia mayfindoutbeforeverylong thatsuchmenareagreatdeal moredangerousdeadthanalive. Strangely,becauseitcannottoleratethesaints(comparatively speaking),itinsistsuponcrestisigmartyrs.Andthereisan historicaldictumabouttheblood rfmartyrswhichtheSoviet woulddowelltoconsider.

Accordingtopressmessages, theVictorianBroadcastingAdvisoryCommitteehasallegedin areportthatnationalstations hadbroadcasttworecordsafter theyhadbeencondemned.

SouthAustraliancommitteecriticisedeveningsessions,especiallydouble-meaningand"borderiine"jokesinseveralnationwidehook-ups.Thisquestion ofsuggestivenessinwirelessprogrammesisaveryseriousone indeedfortwoparticularreasons.Thefirstisthataradio programmecomesintotheintimacyofthefamilycircleinaway inwhichnootherpublicinstrumentalitydoes.Ifthereisanythingoffensiveinapaperor book,parentscanreadilytake measurestopreventitsfalling intothehandsofchildren,or, betterstill,tobanitsentryinto thehomealtogether.Inthecase offilmsthereissomewhatmore difficulty,butaworkablearrangementcansoonbemade.For onething,picturesaregradedas eithersuitableorunsuitablefor generalexhib:tion.Foranother,theCatholicpressendeavourstoprovideaguideforCatholicparentsastothesuitability(fromamoralstandpoint)of films.Inaddition,parentscan

easilyfindoutfromothersofreliablejudgmentwhetherthecinematheyproposetovisithas taresuitableforchildren. Butwiththeradiothereis virtuallynocontrolpossible.It isallverywellforthechampionsof"freedomoftheair"to saythatthemanattheknobis masterofthesituation-ifhe doesn'tliketheprogrammehe canturntoanotheroneorturn thecontraptionoffaltogether. Thisargumentignoresthepetinentfactthatsmuthasfirstto beheardbeforeanydial-twiddlingisofanyavail.Ifchildren arepresentthedamageisdone. Anditisnotonlyaquestionof protectingthemoraloutlookof theyoung.Itisadownrightinsulttodecent-mindedadultsto havedubiousoroutright"blue" jokesmadeinthemidstofthe familycircle.Inthisrespect thewirelessiscapableof,andoccasionallyperpetrates,crudity whichitWouldnotbepossibleto getawaywithinprint.And theissueisevenwiderthan moralobliquity.Thereisthe wholefieldofinferiortaste, cheapnessofoutlook,andartisticandculturaldebasement.

Onceagainweheartheparrotcry:"Youcanturnitoff"!Of courseyoucan-afteryouhave hadyourear-drumsjarredand yoursoulseared.Thewhole pointseemstomethatthereis noreasonorexcusewhyidiot music,puerileplays,orother subnormalmanifestationsshould bepermittedontheair.Itis apainfulindictmentofoureducationalstandardsifthecheap andlarrikinelementinthecommunityislargeenoughtojustify theproportionofauralinanities thataredailybroadcast.The theoryof''givingthepeople whattheywant"hasnever workedoutsatisfactorily,becausethepowers-that-bearebad psychologistsandhaveseeminglyneverstartedouttocompile programmesontheassumption thatthemassofmenisboth rationalandsane.Itshouldbe asimplemattertodealwiththe recordedidiotmusic.Aright prideinasanenationalismought todemandabanontheimportationofthiscacophony.Sucha stepmightatleastdeterthe weak-mindedinourmidstfrom apeingnoisesfromabroad.

"Eitherpartner,"continuedHis Grace,"byseekingtoprevent thisagainstthewilloftheother, isguiltyofagravesin."He mighthaveadded,andperhaps didso,thatevenifbothparties areagreeabletocontraceptive practices,theirguiltisstill grave. WhentheLambethConference of20yearsagomadeitsfateful compromiseonthemoralissueof birth-prevention,Catholics,anda goodmanyenlightenedAnglicans,weredismayed.Forthe casewasparalleltothatofdivorce..Onceasingleexception isadmittedthefloodgatesof abuseareopened.Andagain, asindivorce,thatisprecisely whathappened.Thebirth-rate fellalarmingly,andpeoplewho werenotworriedaboutthemoral collapseitrepresented,wereat leastconcernedbywhatthey termedits"practical"effects.No factortoldsomuchagainstBritaininthecrisisofwarasthe sheerlackof..man-power,and ourovencountryfeltandfeels thepinchkeenly.Butwhatwas happeninginthesoulsofmen -couldhavebeenofmorereal

Ttonlyflourishesinlargeindustrialisedcities.ithasmadeno headwayanywhereintheworld amongfarmingcommunities. ifanyfarmerwantstosee whatwouldhappentohimand hiswayoflifeundertheRussiansystem,hewoulddowellto studytheearlyeffortsofthe Sovietatcollectivisingthepeaset-holdingsoftheUkraine.The deliberatelyengineeredfamineto forcethepeasantstogiveno theirpropertyandtheirtraditionalusagesisoneoftheblackestepisodesofhumanhistory. Butdespitetheapplicationof forceandtheintroductionof modern,mechanisedmethods. Communismhashadnosuccess inprimaryproduction.Sothat to-daythereisrevoltinthe Ukraine,theundyingprotest againsttheoutrageof.30years ago.AnddespitetheironCurtainandtheSovietblockin EasternandCentralEurope, amongthematerialforceselhielt willultimatelybreaktheSoviet system,thepeasantrywillbein theforefront. ThelocalissuewastemporarilylaidtorestbytheextraordinaryrulingthattheFarmers' Unionwasnon-partypolitical, thatCommunistscouldnotthereforebedebarred,andthatthe motionwasoutoforder.This surelyistolerancerunmad,and whatisworsetolerancebasedon falsepremises.Anyattemptto regardtheCommunistpartyas merelyoneoftheacceptedpoliticalpartiesisarrantintellectual blindness.Inthefaceofall theworld'sexperienceinthelast 30years,itisludicroustosuggestthatthisworld-wideconspiracyagainstChristianity,civilisationandthewholegamutof democraticidealismismerelyanotherpoliticalparty!Itisthe kindofohtrusenessthatleadsto finaldisaster.Andthetragedyofitisthatthefarmeris rightlyregarded,forthemost Part,forhisclarityofviewand independenceofjudgment.May wehopethatalongerviewand astrongeronewillultimately prevailintheFarmers'Union?

IhavespokentootherCatholicmenonthismatter,andthey areunanimousintheviewthat theattendanceatY.C.W.and N.C.G.M.function,comprises mainlyteenagers,whichisquite natural,butwhatabouttheCatholicadult?Whatalternative isofferedhim(orher)ifhe(or she)hasnodesiretoattenda Y.C.W./N.C.G.M.function?Only one,sadto.relate,afunctionorganisedbyanon-Catholicbody andattended,inthemain,by non-Catholics!Andtherelies thedangerfromtheCatholic marriagepointofview.

Significantalsoisthefactthat asmanyoftheyoungpeople, whonormallyattendY.C.W./ N.C.G.M.functions,attaintheir majorities,theirattendanceat thedances,etc.,beginstodiminishandacasualvisittoanyof thepublicentertainmentsin Perthwillrevealthewhereaboutsof75percent.oftheabsentees-swampedinaseaof non-Catholicsintheirsearchfor adultcompany.

Theshadesofnightwerefalling, andsoweremyhopes.Infact theonlythingrisingwas taxi meter.

I foundsomewelcomemail,and madetheacquaintanceofthe friendlyassistantshereonbeing introducedbyTorg. Afterlunchandalongwalk aroundthelocality,wearrived attheDruryLaneTheatre, wherethecurrentAmericanmusicalcomedysensation,"Oklahoma,"wasplaying.Onenquiry foundtherewerenoseatsleft, butonlystandingroominthe UpperCircle.Wedecidedto chanceit.Upstepsandsteps thatseemedendless.Whenwe hadreachedwhatmusthavebeen atleastthe10,000-feetlevel,and Iwaslookingaroundforanoxygenmask,asmilingattendant showeduswheretostand.This historicoldtheatre,withits memoriesofGarrick,Sheridan, Kemble,Mrs.SiddonsandEdmundKean,tomentionbuta few,isahugeplace.Itmust seatthousands.Theacoustics wereremarkablygood.Theplay itselfwaswellpresentedandhad afewbrightmusicalnumbers. itdidnot,however,thrilltothe extentthattheJ.C.Wiliamson productionsdidwhenIsawthem fifteenortwentyyearsago.Even allowingforthefactthatIwas ofamuchmoreimpressionable agethen,Idonotthinkthatpresent-daymusicalcomediescan holdacandletosuchshowsas "TheMerryWidow,""Maidof theMountains.""Floridora," "StudentPrince,""DesertSong," tomentionafewthatcomereadilytomind.

Theyhadbeenrobbedanddriven outoftheirconventinBuenos Aires,andexpelledfromtheArgentinebyanunjustandtyrannicalGovernment.Itwasnot theloveofgoldthatbrought themtoCoolgardie;itwasnot thespiritofboldadventurers, noranyearthlymotivesthat brougththemhere.Itwasthe loveofGodandtheloveoftheir neighbours.Theycametospend themselvesandtobespentfor thelittleoneswhoaskedforthe breadofeternallifeandhadno onetobreakitforthem.And wecanrealisehowgreatwas thedistressoftheCatholicchildrenatthetimefromthefact thatfromtheveryopeningof theConventSchoolintheold theatre,thenumberinattendancewaseightyCatholicchildren,andwithinafewvteksthe numberhadgrowntowellover ahundred.Forfiveyearsthe schoolwasconductedundergreat difficultiesintheoldtheatre,but theSisterswerethekindofwomenoutofwhomsaintsandmartyrsaremade,andtheyperseveredintheirgoodworkrighton totheend.Theydidwonderful thingsintheirlives.Trulywe mayapplytothemthewordsof Ecclesiasticus:"Blessedisthe manthatisfoundwithoutblemishandthathathnotgoneafter goldnorputhistrustinmoney norintreasures.Whoisheand wewillpraisehim?Forhe hathdonewonderfulthingsin hislife."Yes,theSistersof MercyinCoolgardie,andespeciallythepioneerSisters,didwonderfulthingsintheirlives.And itisauniquethingthatofthe fiveSisterswhofoundedthe ConventandCatholicSchoolin Coolgardie,fiftyyearsago,four ofthemperseveredinthegood workhereuntildeath,whilethe fifth,nodoubtforjustandlawfulreasons,returnedtoher

ConventinAdelaide,whereshe ishappilystillliving.

ThenamesofMotherAntonia andherfourcompanionsareheld inbenedictionbynumberlessCatholicswhowereinstructedby themintheknowledgeofJesus Christ;fouroftheirbodiesare buriedinpeaceinthenearby cemetery,andawaitaglorious resurrection,andwecanhavethe greatestconfidencethattheir soulsarewithGod,fortheSac- 6 redScrpituresays:''Buttheythatarelearnedshallshineas thebrightnessofthefirament: andtheythatinstructmanyto justiceasstarsforalleternity."

Thesecondlessonisforthe SistersofMercy.Persevere faithfullyinyourvocationandin yourgoodworks.Thelivesof theSisterswhohavegonebeforeyouduringthepastfifty years,andindeedfromthevery beginningofyourCongregation, isacontinualexhortationtoyou topraiseandglorifyGod.Do notimaginethattheSistersof Mercywhosebodiesnowlieinthe cemetery,havenowanyregrets thattheygavethemselveswholeheartedlytotheserviceofGod andthesalvationofsouls.When youlieuponyourdeath-bedand holdinyourhandtheblessed candle,thelightofthatcande willrevealtoyouallthegraces thatGodhasbestowedonyouin callingyoutothereligiouslife andtolabourforthesalvation ofsouls. Andthefinallessonforallof us:AJubileeforcesustolook backonthepastfiftyyears.It alsosuggeststhatweshould lookforwardtothecomingfifty andconsiderwhattheyshall meantous.ThepioneerSisters whofoundedtheCatholicSchool andConventinthisparishhave .-onetotheirreward;mostofthe peoplewhocameheretoseek theirfortuneintheearlydays havealsogoneintoeternity. Coolgardie,whichoncepromised tobecomeagreatcity,hasbeen abandonedbymanyofitsinhabitantsandhasdwindledtoa smalltown.Allremindsusthat wehavenotherealastingcity andthatitisourdutytoseek onethatistocome;thattheonly truewisdomistolayuptreasuresinHeaven.Andsowe praywiththeHolyChurch: "Grant,0Lord,thatwlhilewe "assthroughthechangingthings ofthisworld,wemaykeepour 'ntheKingdomofHeaven.My heartsfixedwheretherearetrue joys"-trueandeverlastingjoys dearSisters,rejoiceinthis,that yournamesarewritteninHeaven. ThelateFatherCrowley,0, FatherTom,ashewasknownto all,wasbornonthe4th.ofApril, 1875,atHollyhillBallineen,Co. Cork.HereceivedhisearlyeducationatSt.Finbar's,Farranferris,andlateronatAllHallow'sCollege,Dublin,wherehe wasordainedPriestonJune24, 1901.

Hesailedalmostimmediately forAustralia,arrivinginPerth onOctober18ofthesameyear.

Acoupleofyearswerespent atToodyay,andthen,in1903.he wassenttoopenthenewparish ofHighgateHill.Heremained heretill1936,andonhisreturn fromanextendedholidayinIreland,hewasappointedChaplain toSt.Joseph'sOrphanage,Subiaco,apositionwhichheheld untilhisdeath.

Tohisbrother,Mr.JohnCrowley,ofHollyhill,Co.Cork,"The Record"extend,itsdeepestsympathy.Afullaccountofthe funeralwillbegiveninnex: week'sissue.

Manywillrememberhisnoble andcourageousworkwhenthe dreadedSpanishinfluenzabroke outinthisStateafterthefirst WorldWar.Althoughthedie. easewasofamostcontagious nature,andpeopleweredyingin largenumberseveryday,Father Crowleywasaconstantvisitor toBlackboyHospital,administeringtheSacramentstothedying, andprovidingcomfortsforthe convalescingpatients.

Charityinspeechusedtobeanothermanifestationofhisgeneroussoul.Hewouldnotallow anyonetobecriticisedinhispresence,nomatterhowbadthey mightbe."Faith,andshe'll comehack;nevermind,we're bornbutnotburied,"usedtobe hisremarkwhenheheardanybodycensuringtheconductof others. HisWyeofchildrenwasoutstandingResponsibleforthe buildingofthefineprimary school,heusedtospendalotof timeinstructingthechildren Theyknewhim,trustedhim,and lovedhimHealwayssawthat therewereplentyofsweets availableforthem,andnevera holiday,ormortespeciallyaSt. Patrick'sDay,pasesdthathedid notorganisesomethingforthem.

Peoplestilltalkofhisfondnessforphotography.Heand hiscamerawereinseparable, andheturnedhisskilltogood account.Aproudpossessorof aprojector,hemadenumerous lanternslidesandpeopleused tocomefromnearandfarto hisshowsjusttoseeMrs.B,'s headmountedonMr.A'sbody projectedonthescreen.Asense ofhumourandacamerahelped himtopayoffthecrushingdebt ontheparish.Thiswas,of course,manyyearsago,when suchthingsascinemaswerenot eventhoughtof.

Afeatureofhisspirituallife washisdeepandtenderdevotion toOurLadyofLourdes.He himselftoldofhow,whenjusta youngpriest,hewasapatient inhospital,andheheardoneof theNunsonthe'phonetelling someonethathedidnothave verylongtolive."Ihadonly justbegunmypriestlylife,"he said,"soIdecidedtoaskOur LadyofLourdestodosomething forme."Soonafterwardshe wasreleasedfromhospital, cured.FromthatclayhisdevotiontoOurLadyofLourdes wasproverbial Heerecteda statueinherhonourinthe sanctuaryofthechurch,and neveranightpassedthatthe Rosarywasnotrecitedinpublic TheMayandOctoberdevotions wereamodelforallotherpar- ishestocopy.

TheEucharisticProcessionin honouroftheSacredHeartwas startedalmostassoonashehad foundedtheparish,aprocession whichnowdrawscrowdsof worshippersfromallthemetropolitanparishes.

Atfouro'clockoneWednesday afternoon,notlongago,seven membersoftheJuniorRedCross BookBindingClub,together withMissNorton,ourJunior RedCrossYouthLeaderinNew SouthWales,wereshowninto theofficeofMr.Catts.themanagingdirectoroftheNewCenturyPress,Sydney.Wewere theretoseetheproductionofa book,frommeetingtheauthorto theplacingofthedust-jacketon thebook. Afterintroductions,Mr.Catts handeduseachapieceofpaper, whichwhichwastypedthestages inthemakingofabook.This wastoenableustounderstand betterwhatweweretosee.Then heshowedusallalargesheetof paper,aboutfourfeetlongand afewfeetwide,whichwasdivid'dintosixteenparts.Eachof thesesixteenpartswasapage, andprintedonitwaspartofthe book.Thesheetwasprinted onbothsides.Wewentoutof theoffice,intoalargeroom.

Fromallcornerscouldbeheard theclangofmachinery.Mr. Cattsguidedustoamachine, whichhasakeyboardlikeatype- writer.Thiswascalledthelino typemachine.Amansatona stoolendtappedthekeys,which werethesameasthoseofatypewriter.Afterseveralmechanicalprocesses,theoblongmetal slab,withtheimprintonitback tofront,camefromapartof themachine.Lateronthese

Thesheetsofpaperwerepassed overthis,andthewordsthus printedonthem.Eachsheetof paper,asitwasprinted,was countedbymechanicalmeans. Thisappearedinanumberol slots.Oneofthespacescounteduptoten,countingeachnumberbyone,andwhenitreached tenthisrecordedinanotherslot. Therewereotherspacesforhundredsandthousands. Wethensawthemachinewhich printedthenameofthebookon thecover.Thiswaslikea press.Thecoverwnsslippedin betweentwoslabs,aleverwas pulledandoneslabpressed againsttheother.Whenopenedout,thenamehadbeenprinted.Themaninchargeofthe machineslippedoutthepriAteu cover,andanotherwasplaced Goingupstairs,wesawyetan- othermachine,whichfoldedthe largesheetsintosixteendifferentparts.Allthesheetswere laidontopofoneanotherona partofthemachine,anditwas started.Thesheetsslid,oneby one,downthroughtworollers, pasinglowereverytime,and werethusfolded.Afterthey hadbeenfolded,anoblongblack markshowedonthesideofeach sheet.Thisenabledthegirl:o gatherthemincorrectorder.If shemissedout,theblackmarks wouldnotmeet;therewouldbe aspacebetweentwoofthem.

Therewasalsoamachinefor sewingthebookstogether.Comingfromthemachine,thesewn bookswerealljoinedtogether. Agirlhadtostaadbyandcut themintothecorrectparts.The coversweregluedonafterthe edgesofthebookshadbeentrimmed.Thiswasdonebymeans ofahugeguillotine,whichmade theappearanceofthebooksmudneater.Thebookwasnownearlycompleted,andafterseveral otherprocedures,itwasplaced inahugepresswithmanyother pilesofbookstoremainovernight.Bythemorningthe bookswouldbereadyforde-
