Inthehopeofgettingto Sydney,hetookarailwayticket toMeckeringandfromthere hikedtoKellerberrin.Realising thenforthefirsttimetheimpossibilityofhisposition,hereturnedtoFremantleandgave himselfuptothemilitaryauthorities.
Hewasplacedinthemilitary campandnextday,asanenemy alien,wasinternedonRottnest Island.

Rome.Ordainedin1906,hereturnedtoGermany,wherehe workedtill1914.HavingreceivedanofferofaclericalappointmentintheArchdioceseofSydney,hesailedforAustralia,arrivinginFremantleonthat fatefulday,August4th,1914, whenwarwithGermanywas declared.

Fr.Kochappliedforrelease, butsixmonthselapsedbefore hefinallyreceivedwordthathe wasfree.
TheCroationinternees,most ofwhomhadbeenworkingon theGoldfields,openedasubscriptionlistandraisedthe moneyforatickettoSanFranciscoforhim.
HewaslodgedintheFremantleBarrackspendingthesailing oftheKatoomba.Arrivingin Melbourne,hewastreatedasa militaryP.O.W.andmarched throughthestreetsunderarmed militaryescort.Hewasthus probablythefirstmilitary P.O.W.tobelandedinAustralia.
Thistreatmentwasdue,no doubt,toamistake.andhewas immediatelyreleased.Hespent amonthastheguestofArchbishopKelly,ofSydney,and eventuallymanagedtoobtaina passageontheNiagara(which waslostinWorldWarII.)to SanFrancisco.

Thiscollection,gatheredin allthediocesesoftheworld, haslentprecioussupportto thenobleendeavoursofour missionarieswho,withcolonial authoritiesandrepresentatives ofcivilisednationsassisting, havebeenfightingagainstthis dep4orablepractice.
Withsomanygreatforces soilingtogetherinthiscampaign,theevilhasbeenreducedconsiderably.Butitis notyetentirelystampedout; greatnumbersarestillpracticallyinslavery.Andnow anothergreatevilthreatens. whichundermanyrespectsis farworse,namely,theMoslem menace.Islamisspreading widelyinAfrica.propagated bytradersandMoslemmissionaries.Thesoulsofthe poornativescanveryeasilybe savedifourmissionariesreach themfirst,butoncetheyare entangledinthemeshesof Moslemism,itisdifficult,ifnot impossible,torescuethem.
WemaysaythatAfricatodayisatapointwhereitmust choosebetweenChristianityand Moslemism;thepeopleofthis immensecontinentmusteither becomepartakersofthefreedomofChrist'sfollowersor bindthemselvesinthethraldomofMecca,Itistheduty ofallChristians,therefore, urgedbythecharityofChrist, tolendtheirassistance,with prayersandofferings,tothe missionariesofAfricathatthis greatlandmaybewonfor libertyandtruth.

Thisinnovationisduetotheunanimousdesireofcorrespondentswhowroteinsurprisingnumberstogive enthusiasticsupporttotheproposal.Tothosemoreconservativepeoplewhomaythinkthetechniquesomewhat distastefulandover-redolentofsomeofthemostunpleasantfeaturesofmodernadvertising,itissufficient answertostatethatthisdecisionwastakeninthehope ofcontributingsomethingpracticaltowardstheproblem ofmixedmarriage.Itisnotanoriginalidea,butisborrowed,withgratefulacknowledgements,from"TheAustralianMessengeroftheSacredHeart."Thisvaluable littlemonthly,conductedbytheJesuitFathersinVictoria, hasforsomeyearsconductedjustsuchamatrimonial columnwithgratifyingresults."TheMessenger"editor, Rev.Fr.Boylan,S.J.,admitsreadilythatitisnotenough. Butitisabeginningwhichmaypavethewayfora properlyorganisedMarriageBureausuchasnowfunctions inLondon.Inanycase,succeedorfail,itisaneffort worthathousandidlelamentations.
Itisbeingmoreandmoregenerallyrecognisedthat mereprohibitionsarenotgoingtostemtherisingtide ofmixedmarriage.Bishopsandpriestsareprofoundly disturbedbyaproblemtheprecisedimensionsofwhich areextremelydifficulttogauge.Butwedoknowthat inthecensusof1933itwasrevealedthatofCatholic marriages,nearly50percent.weremixed.Theevilconsequencesofsuchastateofaffairsissadlyborneoutby history.Thereisamoralcertaintythatinthevast majorityofthesemarriagestheCatholicpartyandthe childrenwillbecomeeventuallyeithernominalCatholics ordriftawayfromtheChurchaltogether.Themixed marriageisprobablytheprincipalcontributoryfactorto the"leakage"problem.WherethelackofCatholicsocial contactsdoesnotleadtomixedmarriage,itnotinfrequentlyendsformanyinenforcedbachelorhoodorspinsterhood,orinlatemarriage-allofwhicharetragic eventualities,butnotirremediable.Thepurposeofour specialcolumnwillbetoeffectintroductionsbetween Catholicswhomightotherwisenevermeet.
Sorealandabidingisthedangerofmixedmarriage thatwefeelnoapologyiscalledforifadvertisingmay appearderogatorytodignity.Suchanideaemanatesfront thefalseromanticconceptionsoflovesoprevalentto-day, andignoresthepracticalandrealisticviewwhichthe Christianfaithtakesofmarriage.Inthisconnection, however,itmaybewelltostressthatthematrimonial advertisementswillbehandledonacompletelydifferent basisfromthatofordinarycommercialannouncements. Ofcourse,1didnotexpecta wholenightofCarolstobean unalloyedmusicaltreat,butconsideringthetimeoftheyear andthecauseforwhichtheconcertwasgiven,Iwentalongin abenevolentframeofmind.
Theylookedverycool,everybodyincludingMr.Bussdressed inwhite.Beautifullyuniform, sensible,butlackingthecolour interestthattheunregimented femininemindputsintoher ceremonialattire.Imustadmit thatthechoirdidverymuch betterthanwedid,forwhen wewereinvitedtojoininthe better-knowncarols,onlyafew ofustriedourvoices,gingerly, inashamefacedsortofway, andsoonretreatedintocowardly silence.Fromthenontheconductortreateduswiththe"ig,,ore"wedeserved.
Thechoircertainlysangwith verycompetentprecision,and theclarityoftheirenunciation wasalmostmiraculdus.Full marksforthat,Mr.Buss!And now!Herewasachoirwithlots ofmen.somanytenorsthat theyoversangeverybody,includingthesopranos!Therewas muchveryfinesinging,bothforte andpiano,thatwouldhavebeen beautifulifthesegentlemen hadn'toverdoneit.
