BorninAustriain1881,he studiedatPriopagandaCollege,

Inthehopeofgettingto Sydney,hetookarailwayticket toMeckeringandfromthere hikedtoKellerberrin.Realising thenforthefirsttimetheimpossibilityofhisposition,hereturnedtoFremantleandgave himselfuptothemilitaryauthorities.

Hewasplacedinthemilitary campandnextday,asanenemy alien,wasinternedonRottnest Island.

Itwaslatein whentheboat

FR.KOCHatthetimeofhisinternmentduringthefirst WorldWarandFr.Kochto-day.

Rome.Ordainedin1906,hereturnedtoGermany,wherehe workedtill1914.HavingreceivedanofferofaclericalappointmentintheArchdioceseofSydney,hesailedforAustralia,arrivinginFremantleonthat fatefulday,August4th,1914, whenwarwithGermanywas declared.

Withinafewdaystheywere letoutonparole.Theywere allowedfulllibertytogoas theypleasedandspenttheday fishingandbathing.

Onedayhewasononeofhis hikesaroundtheIslandand,not knowingthattheareanearthe lighthousewas"outofbounds," drewneartohaveagoodlook atit.Suddenlytherewasareport,andFr.Kochhadonce moretothank'Providencethat thegarrisontroopswerepoor marksmen.

Theinterneedidtheirown cookingandaflockofsheep waskepttoensureasupplyof ireshmeat.Someoftheprison,rs(therewereabout1000of them)objectedtothemonotonousdietofmutton.Toremedy this,afewbarrelsofsaltbeet

Aftersixmonthsinthecamp, wordwasreceivedthatarrangementswereinhandfortheexchangeofmedicalandclerical nationalsofthebelligerent countries.

Fr.Kochappliedforrelease, butsixmonthselapsedbefore hefinallyreceivedwordthathe wasfree.

TheCroationinternees,most ofwhomhadbeenworkingon theGoldfields,openedasubscriptionlistandraisedthe moneyforatickettoSanFranciscoforhim.

HewaslodgedintheFremantleBarrackspendingthesailing oftheKatoomba.Arrivingin Melbourne,hewastreatedasa militaryP.O.W.andmarched throughthestreetsunderarmed militaryescort.Hewasthus probablythefirstmilitary P.O.W.tobelandedinAustralia.

Thistreatmentwasdue,no doubt,toamistake.andhewas immediatelyreleased.Hespent amonthastheguestofArchbishopKelly,ofSydney,and eventuallymanagedtoobtaina passageontheNiagara(which waslostinWorldWarII.)to SanFrancisco.

1.Asthissectionaimsat diminishingtheevilofmixed marriages,itisintendedonly forCatholiccorrespondents.It isadvisableforthosewhoadvertisetogiverelevantparticularsaboutthemselves,such asageandoccupation.Allcorrespondenceshouldbedistinguishedbyprudence,andcredentialsforeachpartyshould beprovidedbysomecompetent authority,suchasthepastoror anexperiencednun.Thesecredentialsneednotbesenttous, buttothepartieswhoarecorrespondingwithoneanother. AcollectionfortheRedemptionofSlavesinAfrica willbetakenupatallMasses onSunday.the18thJanuary, 1948.

Thiscollection,gatheredin allthediocesesoftheworld, haslentprecioussupportto thenobleendeavoursofour missionarieswho,withcolonial authoritiesandrepresentatives ofcivilisednationsassisting, havebeenfightingagainstthis dep4orablepractice.

Withsomanygreatforces soilingtogetherinthiscampaign,theevilhasbeenreducedconsiderably.Butitis notyetentirelystampedout; greatnumbersarestillpracticallyinslavery.Andnow anothergreatevilthreatens. whichundermanyrespectsis farworse,namely,theMoslem menace.Islamisspreading widelyinAfrica.propagated bytradersandMoslemmissionaries.Thesoulsofthe poornativescanveryeasilybe savedifourmissionariesreach themfirst,butoncetheyare entangledinthemeshesof Moslemism,itisdifficult,ifnot impossible,torescuethem.

WemaysaythatAfricatodayisatapointwhereitmust choosebetweenChristianityand Moslemism;thepeopleofthis immensecontinentmusteither becomepartakersofthefreedomofChrist'sfollowersor bindthemselvesinthethraldomofMecca,Itistheduty ofallChristians,therefore, urgedbythecharityofChrist, tolendtheirassistance,with prayersandofferings,tothe missionariesofAfricathatthis greatlandmaybewonfor libertyandtruth.

AMatrimonialColumn

WiththisissueweinaugurateaMatrimonialColumn. Thisinnovationisduetotheunanimousdesireofcorrespondentswhowroteinsurprisingnumberstogive enthusiasticsupporttotheproposal.Tothosemoreconservativepeoplewhomaythinkthetechniquesomewhat distastefulandover-redolentofsomeofthemostunpleasantfeaturesofmodernadvertising,itissufficient answertostatethatthisdecisionwastakeninthehope ofcontributingsomethingpracticaltowardstheproblem ofmixedmarriage.Itisnotanoriginalidea,butisborrowed,withgratefulacknowledgements,from"TheAustralianMessengeroftheSacredHeart."Thisvaluable littlemonthly,conductedbytheJesuitFathersinVictoria, hasforsomeyearsconductedjustsuchamatrimonial columnwithgratifyingresults."TheMessenger"editor, Rev.Fr.Boylan,S.J.,admitsreadilythatitisnotenough. Butitisabeginningwhichmaypavethewayfora properlyorganisedMarriageBureausuchasnowfunctions inLondon.Inanycase,succeedorfail,itisaneffort worthathousandidlelamentations.

Itisbeingmoreandmoregenerallyrecognisedthat mereprohibitionsarenotgoingtostemtherisingtide ofmixedmarriage.Bishopsandpriestsareprofoundly disturbedbyaproblemtheprecisedimensionsofwhich areextremelydifficulttogauge.Butwedoknowthat inthecensusof1933itwasrevealedthatofCatholic marriages,nearly50percent.weremixed.Theevilconsequencesofsuchastateofaffairsissadlyborneoutby history.Thereisamoralcertaintythatinthevast majorityofthesemarriagestheCatholicpartyandthe childrenwillbecomeeventuallyeithernominalCatholics ordriftawayfromtheChurchaltogether.Themixed marriageisprobablytheprincipalcontributoryfactorto the"leakage"problem.WherethelackofCatholicsocial contactsdoesnotleadtomixedmarriage,itnotinfrequentlyendsformanyinenforcedbachelorhoodorspinsterhood,orinlatemarriage-allofwhicharetragic eventualities,butnotirremediable.Thepurposeofour specialcolumnwillbetoeffectintroductionsbetween Catholicswhomightotherwisenevermeet.

Sorealandabidingisthedangerofmixedmarriage thatwefeelnoapologyiscalledforifadvertisingmay appearderogatorytodignity.Suchanideaemanatesfront thefalseromanticconceptionsoflovesoprevalentto-day, andignoresthepracticalandrealisticviewwhichthe Christianfaithtakesofmarriage.Inthisconnection, however,itmaybewelltostressthatthematrimonial advertisementswillbehandledonacompletelydifferent basisfromthatofordinarycommercialannouncements. Theyrepentedandpetitioned forreunionwiththeByzantineSlavonicRite.Theirpetition wasgrantedandBishopRomzha andhiscompanionswereen routetotheparishtore-consecratethechurch.

WhiledrivingtoVelikiLucki, amilitarytankcamefrombehindandcrashedintothecart.

Thetwopriestsandtheseminarianswereinstantlykilled;BishopRomzhareceivedfatalinjuries.

(c)Inassessinganapprentice'swagesitisessentialto ensurethatwhateversystemis adopted,marginsforskillmust beretained.

LEISUREPRESENTS PROBLEMS

Mr.Stoutalsosaidthatthe intelligentuseofleisurebyapprenticesandotherworkerswas essential,sothatbodyandmind wouldnotreactviolentlyasa resultofrepetitionormonotonouswork. Itwasapparentthatimproved wagesweredesirableandnecessary.Itwasamatterofhow theywouldbeassessed.

Thesecondrecommendation wasthatanallowancebepaid toapprenticesandotheryoung workerswhoarerequiredto liveawayfromhome.

Mr.Stoutagreeditwasnecessarytoprovidesomesortof anallowancefornecessitous cases,Whetherindustryshould poolapercentageofitsincome oraGovernmentsubsidyortax beleviedtoprovidethenecessaryrevenuewouldbeproposals worthyofconsideration.

TheSt.Joan'sAllianceCommitteeviewsthisproposalwith theutmostapprehensionforthe followingreasons:

Suchlegislationmustinevitablywidenthescopeofdivorce becauseallthegroundsofdivorceinalltheStateswouldbe madegroundsofdivorceunder Commonwealthlaw,

Thiswouldbeinevitablebecauseneverinthehistoryofdivorcelaws(wethinkinany country)certainlyinnopartof theBritishEmpire,hasaground ofdivorceeverbeentakenaway. Todosowouldbetosayin effecttoanindefinitenumberof divorcedpersons"youshould neverhavebeendivorcedatall," andthiswouldtendtothrowa cloudonthevalidityofanysubsequentmarriagemadebysuch persons,anditisunanswerably truethatdivorcealwaysextends, nevercontractstheboundaries ofitsoperation.

Ifanythingcoulddescribeher singing,Ishouldsayshesang likeabird,andhersong"pour- ed"out.Thebeautifulbut weather-wornGriegAMinor Concerto(accompaniedbythat accomplishedpianistStephanieJames)wasplayedbyWallace Tate,orratherthefirstmovementofitwas.Myearfound itratherastrangerinthecompanyofcarols,butthereyou are.Thereweretwofinegrand pianostoaccompanythelarge choir,soIsupposetheinvitationtousethemcouldnotbe resisted,WallaceTate,ayoung manquitenewinthemusical ranks,hasafineideaastohow togoaboutthings;thereisenthusiasm,goodtone,agoodconceptionofthemusic,butthose finebighandsofhisaregoingto doquitealotofwOrkyetbeforehegetsthemproperlyun dercontrol.Atpresenttheyare apttogathermorenotesin theirgraspthantheyaremeant to.Thatprobablywasina greatmeasureduetonervousness.Anyway,eventhemost experiencedofsensitivemusicianssuffersfromthat.I thinkthisyoungpianistisworth watching.
