Wednesdaynext,theFeastofSt.FrancisXavier,isa spirituallandmarkfortheCatholicChurchinAustralia, becauseSt.FrancisXavieristheprincipalpatronsaintof themissions,andourcountrystillretainsinmanyrespectsmissionarystatus.Lackingasyetanyofficial Saintsofourownbloodandstock,thecharacterandlaboursofXavierappealverystronglytotheCatholicmind inAustralia,for*inthisgreatestmissionaryinChristian historyextraordinaryapostolicendeavourwascombined withthecultivationoftheinteriorlifewhichwasatonce itssourceanditsinspiration.Thehappyflexibilityof theJesuitconstitution,moreover,enabledXaviertocarry outhisapostolatewithinitiativeandfreshnessofmethodwhichmakehimsoattractivetothemodernismof to-day.Hefiresparticularlytheimaginationoftheyoung, forhislifeisrepletewithadventure,impetuosity,anda completelygenerousimmolationofselfinthecauseof Christ.ThishasbecomeincreasinglytrueoftheadvanceofCatholicActioninAustralia,forastheevilof theworldincreases,sotheCatholiclifedrivesdeeperand deepertowithstandit.Greatergenerosity,moreselfsacrifice,aredemanded,andtosuchaspiritofchallenge theardentflameofyoutheagerlyreachesout.Tolive dangerouslyto-dayistobeaCatholic,fortothefull-bloodedCatholic,lifeismorefulloflabour,ofrisk,andyet morerepletewithprospectofspiritualconquestthanever before. lit
TheFeastofSt.FrancisXavierislikeanoteofreveilleinCatholicAction.Truethemovementhascommenced,hasgatheredimpetus,andgivenpromiseofbringingforthverymuchfruit.Butitwillneverbecomplete untilitisall-embracing,forCatholicActionisnotthesole prerogativeofyouth,foritisCatholiclifeaimingtoembraceintheMysticalBodyofChristeverybaptisedsoul. InthemeantimetheworldoutsidetheChurchdriftsfartherandfartherfromthedoctrines,andthewayoflife preachedandled1.-,yChristOurLord,andfinallythegreat calamityofwaragainthreatensChristendom.Andwhile oneapprehendswithanxietythefearfulaftermaththatfollowsinthewakeofwartotheapostle,itisalsoamilieuof intensepossibilitiesforgood.Theheartbreak,thedisillusion,thecynicism,thedespairofpost-warperiods,isa uniqueopportunityforanyonewithaconstructiveidea. Andwhatalternative,afterall,isthereforthenextgenerationapartfromCatholicism,whichcansatisfyallthat isbestinhumanaspiration.Onallsidesthereishope, howeverirrational,ofaneworderarisingoutofthisconflict,socialreconstructionofcommunitiesandnations. HowmucheasierallthiswouldbetorealiseifAustralia enjoyedacommonreligiousbeliefandasinglepholosophy oflife.Trulythesocialreconstructionenvisagedbythe Churchproceedsfrompremisesofpurereason,buteven thesehavebeenvitiatedbyreligiouserrorandstillmore byindifferentismwhichissooftencalledtolerance.
TherecurringFeastofXaviershouldthenbetheoccasionfortherecallingtoAustralianCatholicmindsnot onlyofthetremendousresponsibilitiesthatfallupon themasCatholicsnormally,butofthetremendousincreaseinthese,duetothecircumstancesofthetimes,and shouldbeawarningagainstcomplacency,andthattemptationwhichthoughprevalentiscompletelyforeigntothe Catholicoutlook,thatis,thattheFaithisaprivateconcern,andthattheCatholicobligationfinisheswiththe efforttosaveone'sownsoul.Faiththatisnotapostolic incharacterverysoondeclinesanddies,becauseFaith workeththroughcharity.Faithisdynamic,itmust radiate;andthisbringsustothequestionofhowonecan givetheFaithtoothers,underGod,ifitdoesnotsuperaboundinourownminds.Personalholinessis,then, theprerequisiteoftheapostoliclife,fornoone,asthelate Popedeclared,cangivewhathedoesnotpossess.The time,moreover,isripefortheconversionofAustralia. Thenationalcharacter,combinedwiththetraditionsofdecayedLiberalism,haslargelyunrootedpositivereligious antagonism,butithasmadeatthesametimeforreligious indifference,atypeofspiritualdolcefaniente.This largeamorphousmassofvagueness,uncertaintyand doubtisamilieupregnantwithpossibilities.ItisugoldenopportunityfortheChurchinAustralia,andwemust seizeit.FortheconversionofAustraliatotheonetrite foldwouldgreatlyfacilitatebothsocialandeconomicreformswhichthemassofthepeoplesoardentlydesire.It isourgreatnationalresponsibility,withtheaidofSt. FrancisXavier,tomakethiscountrythesouthernland oftheHolySpirit

Hearn,inhisreplytomyletter, hascompletelyignoredthemost importantpoint.Themainobjectinwritingtheletterwasnot anattempttojustifytheBankinglegislation,buttodrawthe attentionofreaderstothemisleadingadvbrtisementinserted bytheso-calledCitizens'Rights Association.Irepeatthatthe advertisementwasmisleading, andIchallengeMr.Hearnto denythis.
Mr.HearnhasofferedtosupplymewithacopyoftheConstitutionofhisAssociation.I regretthat1mustdecline,the ()ire:,asIamalreadyamember ofarealCitizens'RightsAssociation,namely,theLabour Tarty,whichneverchangesits nameorprincipals,whetherin victoryorindefeat,andwhich has,insteadofreducingwages, createdfullemploymentfor everypersonwhoiswillingto work.

HowwelltheSaintsunderstoodtheimportanceofthese truths,andwecansaythatthey occupiedthemselveswiththem entirely.WereadinthehistoryoftheChurchthatalarge numberofSaints,penetrated withthenothingnessofthis world,andthegreatnessofthe eternaltruths,despisedthe wrldandforsookit,andshut themselvesupinaconvent,or inthewilderness,hidingthemselvesintheforest,soastobe betterabletogivethemselves dptocontemplation.Andthere, indarkandlonelycaves,theyoccupiedthemselves,apartfrom thenoiseandtumult,penetrated bythesegreattruths,withseveritytowardstheirbodies,whim theirloveofGodimplantedin them.Prayer,fastingand scourgingbroughttheirbodies intoapitiablestate.Andso theypassedtheirlives,which wereonlyalongmartyrdom. tertainedtheConferenceDelegatesandthreethousandmembersoftheCatholicFederation ofWomenatadelightfulgarden partyatManly.Theservingof adeliciousafternoonteaand icestosuchalargegathering wasagigantictask,buttheCatholicgirlscarrieditoutper- fectly.
HisExcellency,theGovernor, Lieut.GeneralNorthcott,and Mrs.Northcottpresidedatthe openingsessionanddeclared themselvesdelightedwithall theysawandheard.
