Perhapsit'sthebanquethabitwhichbringsonsuchideas.In factitmustbe,fornoneother thanthatexperiencedbanqueter JoeStalinhasnowvoicedsentimentsonparallellines.

Joeonceagainrefusedtoshare ourmajorityviewandagrees insteadwiththeHollywood Czars'statementthattheyare chieflyconcernedwithmatters farabovethevulgarnoiseof jinglingboxofficecoins.

ItmaybewellforDr.Mowll toconsiderthisanglebefore !inkingthenamesofCommunism andCatholicismasfoes,andespeciallyofembroilingthelatter inpoliticalintrigue.Nowitis uselesstocontendthatthe Churchdoesnetengageinpolitics,forthatistoilarmShe doesnotexist.Justasthelife ofamanis,orshouldbe,integratedwiththeactivitiesof life,soaninstitutioncannotlive intheworldinsplendidisolation.FoundedbytheSonof God,protectedbytheHolyGhost, theChurchmustyetliveand workinthisworld.Butthere aresomepointsworthnotingin regardtotheChurch'spolitical activity.Themajorconsiderationisthatitsdiplomacyis basedupontheprinciplesenunciatedintheSermononthe Mount.Secondly,thepurpose ofitsactivityisnotanymere sectarianadvantage(astheAnglicanPrimateseemedunworthilytoinfer),buttheprotection ofthelegitimaterightsofthe Churchandtheattempttocreateorpromoteasocialorderin whichmencanliveafullnaturallife-forthatisthebaseupon whichthesuperstructureofsup ernaturalismiserected.

TheFeastofSt.FrancisXavierislikeanoteofreveilleinCatholicAction.Truethemovementhascommenced,hasgatheredimpetus,andgivenpromiseofbringingforthverymuchfruit.Butitwillneverbecomplete untilitisall-embracing,forCatholicActionisnotthesole prerogativeofyouth,foritisCatholiclifeaimingtoembraceintheMysticalBodyofChristeverybaptisedsoul. InthemeantimetheworldoutsidetheChurchdriftsfartherandfartherfromthedoctrines,andthewayoflife preachedandled1.-,yChristOurLord,andfinallythegreat calamityofwaragainthreatensChristendom.Andwhile oneapprehendswithanxietythefearfulaftermaththatfollowsinthewakeofwartotheapostle,itisalsoamilieuof intensepossibilitiesforgood.Theheartbreak,thedisillusion,thecynicism,thedespairofpost-warperiods,isa uniqueopportunityforanyonewithaconstructiveidea. Andwhatalternative,afterall,isthereforthenextgenerationapartfromCatholicism,whichcansatisfyallthat isbestinhumanaspiration.Onallsidesthereishope, howeverirrational,ofaneworderarisingoutofthisconflict,socialreconstructionofcommunitiesandnations. HowmucheasierallthiswouldbetorealiseifAustralia enjoyedacommonreligiousbeliefandasinglepholosophy oflife.Trulythesocialreconstructionenvisagedbythe Churchproceedsfrompremisesofpurereason,buteven thesehavebeenvitiatedbyreligiouserrorandstillmore byindifferentismwhichissooftencalledtolerance.

TherecurringFeastofXaviershouldthenbetheoccasionfortherecallingtoAustralianCatholicmindsnot onlyofthetremendousresponsibilitiesthatfallupon themasCatholicsnormally,butofthetremendousincreaseinthese,duetothecircumstancesofthetimes,and shouldbeawarningagainstcomplacency,andthattemptationwhichthoughprevalentiscompletelyforeigntothe Catholicoutlook,thatis,thattheFaithisaprivateconcern,andthattheCatholicobligationfinisheswiththe efforttosaveone'sownsoul.Faiththatisnotapostolic incharacterverysoondeclinesanddies,becauseFaith workeththroughcharity.Faithisdynamic,itmust radiate;andthisbringsustothequestionofhowonecan givetheFaithtoothers,underGod,ifitdoesnotsuperaboundinourownminds.Personalholinessis,then, theprerequisiteoftheapostoliclife,fornoone,asthelate Popedeclared,cangivewhathedoesnotpossess.The time,moreover,isripefortheconversionofAustralia. Iftheseimportanttruthswere engrafteddeeplyinourhearts, couldwelivewithoutworkingin suchawaythatthejudgmentof Godwhichoursinshaveprovokedmightbemitigated?Infact, dearbrethren,whocould,atthe thoughtthatweareonlyinthis worldtosaveoursouls,cheat hisneighbour,ordohimany injustice?Whowouldgive himselfuptothepleasuresof thisworld,whichareofsuch -portduration,andsodangerous foroursalvation,andthereby putononesidetheimportant affairofhissalvation?Who woulddaretocommitagrieveussinifhehadbeforehismind thefactthatasinglemortalsin wouldsendhimtoperdition?or whowould,ifheweresounfortunateastohavecommitted suchasin,remaininsuchalamentablecondition,wherethe handofGodmightreachhimat anymoment,andnothasten'to takerefugeintheSacramentof Penance,whichistheonlyremedythatGodinHismercyoffersus?

HowwelltheSaintsunderstoodtheimportanceofthese truths,andwecansaythatthey occupiedthemselveswiththem entirely.WereadinthehistoryoftheChurchthatalarge numberofSaints,penetrated withthenothingnessofthis world,andthegreatnessofthe eternaltruths,despisedthe wrldandforsookit,andshut themselvesupinaconvent,or inthewilderness,hidingthemselvesintheforest,soastobe betterabletogivethemselves dptocontemplation.Andthere, indarkandlonelycaves,theyoccupiedthemselves,apartfrom thenoiseandtumult,penetrated bythesegreattruths,withseveritytowardstheirbodies,whim theirloveofGodimplantedin them.Prayer,fastingand scourgingbroughttheirbodies intoapitiablestate.Andso theypassedtheirlives,which wereonlyalongmartyrdom. HisExcellency,theGovernor, Lieut.GeneralNorthcott,and Mrs.Northcottpresidedatthe openingsessionanddeclared themselvesdelightedwithall theysawandheard.

ToexplainhowIvysolvesher geometricalproblemwouldbeto givethegameawaycompletely, andthoughinthefilmnoat temptismadetodisguiseher designs,Idonotproposetodetractoneiotafromtheface alueoftheadmissionpriceby lesseninginterestintheplot, Theplot,however,isnotan importantfactorinthisfilm. Whatisimportant,andwhat makesthefilmrathernotable,is thestresslaidonthepeculiar mentalmake-upofIvy.Shecould bedescribed,Isuppose,asapsychopathiccase,beingoutwardly charmingandinwardlyvicious. AmannamedElimelech,with hiswifeNaomiandhistwosons, MahlonandChilion,madea journeyfromtheirhousetothe foreignandheathencountryof Moab,becauseofagreatfamine. Theyfoundlandandfoodmthis strangecountry,andthetwosons wereperfectlycontentwithit; butNaomisighedoftenforher homeland,andforthecompany ofherkinspeople.
