Itwasexpresslyenjoinedon Governorsthatthey"shallprotectthefreeexerciseofpublic worshiptheymayauthoriseand shallnotinterfereinthespiritualfunctioningoftheMinistry ofthesesectsnorintheirprivateacts."

Thatthisfreedomofworship followedswiftlyontheliberation ofthevariousterritoriesfrom therevolutionariesduringthe CivilWar,isprovedbythefollowingfacts:

OneDivinePerson,TwoDistinct Natures

"NorthPerth"writes:

SUBLIMEMYSTERYOFTHEINCARNATION outofthetwoofthem.Thisis acontradiction,andanabsurdity.

"IfJesuswasGod,howcould thedivinitybeobscuredor dominatedbythehumanity? HowcouldHeeverforgetthat HewasGod?WhywouldHe everneedtospeakasman? SurelyGodcouldmakeHimselfquiteclearwhilespeakingallthetimeasGod?Again, ifHewereGod,Hehadall knowledge,andhowcouldHe getanymoreknowledge?You havesaidthatHehadthree kindsofknowledge.But,if Hehadallknowledge,surely theotherknowledgewouldbe superfluous.Howcouldyou putmoreintoacontainerthat wasalreadyquitefull?"

A.:Yourdifficultiescomefrom amisunderstandingofthemeaningofthegreatmysteryofthe Incarnation,andalsofromthe factthatyouaredealingwitha mystery.Attheriskoftaxing thebrainsofmylisteners,I shallexplainbrieflytheteaching oftheChurchonthemysteryof theIncarnation.Theneedof understandingthisteachingis great,fortherearemanypeople whowillnotbelievethatChrist isGodbecausetheysaythatthis makestheinfinitefinite,and ttihoenr.eforeinvolvesacontradic-

ThemysteryoftheIncarnationconsistsinthis,that,one andthesamedivinePersonpossessestwodistinctnatures,one divine,theotherhuman.This isatruthwhichindeedcannot befullyunderstoodbythehuman mind,butitcontainsnothing contradictory,andwehaveGod's wordforitstruth.Godbecameman,notbymixingHis DivinenaturewithHishuman nature,theinfinitewiththefinite,andsomakingonenature

ButtheSecondPersonofthe BlessedTrinity,remainingunchanged,i.e.,remainingGod, withadivinenature,witleinfiniteknowledge,withinfinite power,withinfinitewisdomand truth,tookuntoHimselfaperfecthumannature,andjoined thatnaturetoHisDivinePerson, sothatinChrist,wehaveone DivinePerson,withtwonatures, oneaDivinenature,theothera humannature.Therefore,Christ's humannatureiselevatedtoa unionwithaDivinePerson.BecauseofthatunionHishuman naturesharestheholinessand goodnessofGod. Becauseof thatunion,everythingwhich Hishumanmindthoughtisthe thoughtofHisDivinePerson, everywordwhichHishumanlips utteredareindeedhumanwords, butthehumanwordsofHisDivinePerson,andthereforethe humanwordsofGod. EverythingwhichHishumannature enduredisindeedthesuffering ofaman,butthesufferingofa manwhohasaDivinePerson, andisthereforethesufferingof thatDivinePerson,andofGod.

NoticethattheinfiniteDivine naturedoesnotinterferewith thehumannatureofChrist.He isaperfectman,withaperfect humannature,quitedistinctfrom HisDivinenature.Hethought, taught,preached,worked,and sufferedjustasanyotherman. ThedifferenceisthatallHis humanactionsbelongtoandare sanctifiedbyHisDivinePerson, Whoactsthroughthehuman naturewhichHeassumedwhen Hebecameman.ThisDivine Person,God,actsthroughHis humannaturejustasyouandI actthroughourhumannatures.

DidChristAcquireNew Knowledge?

Nowforyourquestions:

1.IfJesuswasGod,howcould Hisdivinitybedominatedor obscuredbyHishumannotre7"

A.Hisdivinityisnotdominatedandcouldnotbedominated byHishumannature.HisdivinityisnotobscuredbyHis humannature,exceptinthe sensethatHefreelychosenot

touseit, forexample,Hefully chosenottouseHisinfinite powertodefendHimselfagainst thosewhokilledHim, "HowcouldHeeverforget thatHewasGod'?"

A.Hecouldnotanddidnot everforgetthis. "WhyshouldHeeverneedto speakasman?"

A.:Youseemtothinkthat whenChristspeakstouswith Hishumanlips,Godisnotspeakingtous. Therepreciselyis yourmistake.Godisspeaking tous,forthehumannatureof ChristhasaDivinePerson,and theDivinePersonspeakstous throughHisownhumanlips. YouaskwhyHeshouldever needtodothis?Well,Hedid notneedtobecomeman,but(lid sofreely,outofloveforus,to bewithus,toredeemandsave us,andtotalkwithusasman sothatwecouldknowandunderstandtheloveofGod.Thatis thegreatestproofofGod'slove forthisworld."Godsoloved theworldastogiveHisonlybegottenSon."

Yourlastquestionconcerns theknowledgeofChrist.You say,andrightly,thatHehadall knowledge,andthenaskhowHis humanknowledgeisnotsuperfluous,for,yousay,youcannot putanythingmoreintoacontainerwhichisfull.

A.:OurLord,theSecondPersonoftheBlessedTrinity,had twonatures,perfectlydistinct, .andinnowayconfused.This gaveHimtwoperfectlydistinct kindsofknowledge,theonedivine,infinite,eternal,andshared bytheothertwoDivinePersons; theother,humanknowledge, whichbelongedtothehumanintelletctwhichHeassumedatthe Incarnation.ThishumanknowledgecametoHishumanintellectinthreedifferentways. First,theknowledgewhichHe hadfromtheblessedvisionof God,forthesoulofChrist,unitedtoGod'sownPerson,sawGod facetoface,aswehopetowhen wedie.Secondly,Catholictheologyteachesusthatowingto OurLord'sdignityastheSonof God,Hishumansoulwasgiven knowledgelikeuntothatpossessed byGod'sangels,a knowledgewhichisinfusedinto thesoulbyGodindependentlyof humansenses,eyes,ears,etc. Thirdly,likeanyotherman,Our Lordacquiredknowledgebyway ofexperience. Thus,forexample,whenHefirstsawwith HishumaneyesHisBlessed Mother,Hehadanewwayof knowingher,whomHisDivine intellecthadknownfromall eternity.

Youmustnotimaginethesoul asakindofmaterialcontainer. Itisalivingspiritualactive thing,andiscapableofdifferent kindsofactsofknowledge. Christ,beingaperfectman,performedthesedifferentactsof knowledge,andacquired,not newknowledge,butnewwaysof knowing-thewaysofaperfect man.
